00:45 Treating mosquitoes for malariaResearchers have developed two compounds that can kill malaria-causing parasites within mosquitoes, an approach they hope could help reduce transmission of the disease. The team showed that these compounds can be embedded into the plastics used to make bed nets, providing an alternative to insecticide-based malaria-control measures, which are losing efficacy in the face of increased resistance.Research article: Probst et al.10:42 Research HighlightsThe sunlight-powered device that can harvest drinkable water from desert air, and evidence that the world's richest people are disproportionately responsible for climate impacts.Research Highlight: Atacama sunshine helps to pull water from thin airResearch Highlight: The world's richest people have an outsized role in climate extremes13:02 The genetics that can lead to pregnancy lossResearchers have found specific genetic mutations that can lead to pregnancy loss. This week we had the pleasure of having a long-time listener and supporter of the podcast, Matt Probst on the show to share with us his history and journey in model railroading and how he has really exploded onto the scene of our hobby online by putting together some amazing scenes and work on his layout! The other great thing about having Matt on the show (which was long overdue) was that he is literally our neighbor as far as the hobby goes! He grew up practically down the street from us and it was long overdue to have him chat with us and tell us what he's been up to. Matt also recently started a model railroading YouTube channel and it's taking off as he shares his techniques and layout progress with the world. Welcome back to the studio. This is My Day of Play, where you're taken into the real events and actions of how it happens long before the process of editing or cleaning up. The original purpose of these episodes was to give my broadcasting students something to edit, to practice with and to call their own. Then I realized that you are just as important. Share the reality of how it really went. We begin things with bestselling author Jennifer Probst who has penned out over 50 books. Our focus was put on how you might be a writer and not know it. There are ten signs. Then we'll wrap things up with Deborah Serra who has written numerous tv and film episodes, been published in literary magazines and loves to put her thoughts into the pages of a book. This is My Day of Play. Completely unedited in the way of meeting the wizard behind the curtain. Jeff Probst, the host of the reality series "Survivor" since its debut in 2000, talks with "Sunday Morning" correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti in Fiji about the social experiment in which strangers stranded on an island must work together – and compete against each other – to win a $1 million prize. Probst, who is also the series showrunner, discusses the improvisational nature of the series as a study of human behavior; the unseen operations of the base camp behind the scenes; how psychology plays into the show's storytelling, including borrowing tactics used in police interrogation videos in his role as host; and the strength of diversity in the show's casting process. How many times have you sat in a PD meeting that didn't apply to you? One where you were learning an 11 letter acronym for a strategy you'd never use, a 3 point plan for a new program that wouldn't fit with your curriculum, or a training you'd already had? A PD meeting that was... irrelevant. In their book, Disrupting Thinking: Why How We Read Matters, Kylene Beers and Bob Probst use one word to describe a key component we need in our in our curriculum in order to keep students' attention: relevance (115). Relevance hit home for me, conceptually. For many years, I've argued here for authentic audience, more contemporary texts featuring diverse voices, real-world projects like genius hour and podcasting, exploring modern mediums for communication, and student-led discussion. Relevance - in the words of the latest visual trend on Insta - fits the #vibesibringtothefunction here at Spark Creativity. I want it for you, of course, in your professional learning, and that's why I'm here. And I want it for your students, in their learning in your classroom. When Beers and Probst polled high school students on what issues they'd be interested in exploring, the issues that feel relevant to them, they named things like solving hate/bullying, fighting racism, ending discrimination around mental illness, and protecting the environment (117). It's not easy to dive into issues like these if you're tied to an aggressive standardized curriculum. As Beers and Probst put it, it's easier to create a learning environment that matters to students "if the question begins, 'What do kids want to know?' rather than 'What does the curriculum say we must cover?'" (116). And yet, there are inroads you can make in your classroom toward relevance, while you have larger conversations with your colleagues and administration about the wider curriculum and the freedom (or lack thereof) it allows you as you design your units. So today, I want to explore ways to build more relevance into the curriculum, even if you don't have carte blanche to teach whatever you want, however you want to. Heroes come in all forms and sizes. Most common are star athletes, television sensations, and our children who turn out to be wonderful people and future parents… A list of heroes can be endless but a hero has to be someone who moves you greatly like a celebrity who has influenced a generation. On todays podcast, Brad Probst, a hero of ours shares a very dark side he struggled through to get where he is today: The Manager of Bear Mountain Outfitters. This is where Nicky and I briefly guided elk hunts on a spectacular 18,000 acre mountain top ranch where the world is silent only to the sounds of nature, bugling elk and shimmering trees that have turned the brilliant colors of fall. Brad climbed to the top of this steep slope after a grueling battle with addiction. Near the bottom of this dark time, he flipped the switch and fought to get out, saving his family and his future. His chapters of survival are brilliant! Brad is also a "Cowboy" (he doesn't think he is) most of the year on the ranch when he is not guiding hunts or rodeoing. He recently went down to the Four 6's ranch to help out as a ranch hand as one thing's for sure, Brad's appetite for hard work is unmatched. We also talk about what it means to be a Cowboy, Elk hunting Colorado, Nuances of being an outfitter, Introduction of wolves, and his admirable climb out of addiction. On todays podcast, we cover the trials of one of the finest men I've ever known.
