International diplomacy can deal with matters of global consequence such as trade and the environment. It can deal with the deeply personal aspects of helping nationals in distress overseas. And it can also deal with the mundane drudgery of working in a large bureaucracy. In my conversation with Tom Barker, the New Zealand Deputy Consul-General in Shanghai, we cover all of these aspects in our short time together. I couldn’t possibly talk to a diplomat from New Zealand without bringing up the character Murray Hewitt from the HBO Series “Flight of the Conchords”. So if you’ve never heard of this TV series, then I would highly recommend watching an episode or two after listening to this podcast. Rhys Darby may be best-known to audiences as Murray Hewitt on the acclaimed HBO series Flight of the Conchords, but the New Zealand Army veteran is also an accomplished stand-up comic, having worked all over the globe for nearly 2 decades and put out 3 stand-up specials. He's also starred in films such as Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi's brilliant vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows and the upcoming Jumanji reboot. A veteran of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Montreal's Just for Laughs, Darby is now in the middle of JFL's Alternative Comedy Tour across Canada alongside headliner T.J. Miller. Back in September, during a visit to Toronto for JFL42, Andrew Lizotte sat down with him to cover a wide range of topics including show preparation, Conchords, his interest in cryptozoology, and his summiting of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Smith joined Tennis Podcast presenters David Law and Catherine Whitaker to reflect upon a tie that Britain won 3-1 against France. It set up a final four meeting with Australia, 18-20 September. “I’ve been trying to come up with the right words to describe Andy, but he is just a phenomenal competitive animal. It was unreal,” said Smith, after captaining the British team from the brink of relegation to Euro African Zone 3 in July 2010, to the semifinals of the World Group. The Tennis Podcast is produced in association with the Telegraph, and supported by BNP Paribas, the bank for a changing world. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
