Former ATP pro and Venezuelan Davis Cup player David Souto joins Steve Smith, Dave Anderson, and Coach Andres to unpack a player's journey from Caracas to the Orange Bowl finals, Argentina, and Spain, and the hidden costs of trying to make it fast. He reflects on what he would change: do not rush development, invest in the little things such as mobility, recovery, and mental skills, and build fundamentals that hold up across surfaces and stages. The conversation expands into culture and leadership, including the changing meaning of Davis Cup, accountability in modern tennis, and why many players skip steps without even knowing the steps. Souto also shares how he is building TenniSapien to raise standards in Venezuela through coach education, structure, and professionalism, creating a bigger universe of athletes and a clearer pathway for long-term development.

For decades, he navigated royal circles, elite dinner tables, and media backrooms—witnessing scandals buried, celebrities crafted, and reputations shielded. In his memoir The Last Alpha Male, Taki delivers a raw, unfiltered autopsy of Western high society's quiet collapse: when discretion died, image triumphed over character, and decadence lost its last standards. Expect sharp wit on masculinity's decline, elite hypocrisy, narrative control, and what civilizations sacrifice when seriousness vanishes. GUEST: Taki Theodoracopulos is the legendary Greek-born writer, publisher, and unrepentant cultural contrarian. A shipping heir educated in America, he excelled as a champion skier, Davis Cup tennis player, and war correspondent before becoming The Spectator's iconic "High Life" columnist for nearly 50 years. Co-founder of The American Conservative and Taki's Magazine, he's authored memoirs chronicling high-society excess, mischief, and moral decay—always with bold, irreverent insight into power's hidden truths. Boris Becker is a former German tennis player, coach, and writer, regarded as one of the most charismatic legends of modern tennis. In 1985, at just 17 years old, he made history by becoming the youngest Wimbledon champion, a victory that propelled him to worldwide fame. Throughout his career, he won six Grand Slam titles, a Davis Cup, and an Olympic medal, standing out for his aggressive playing style, powerful volley, and unbreakable competitive spirit. After retiring, Becker has remained closely connected to tennis as a coach—most notably guiding Novak Djokovic during one of the most successful periods of his career—and as a sports commentator. He has also explored a more personal and reflective side as the author of The Player, an autobiography in which he recounts his meteoric rise, his triumphs, his setbacks, and the lessons learned both on and off the court.

Tell us what you like or dislike about this episode!! Be honest, we don't bite! Most people remember the highlights: the serve, the swagger, the Wimbledon final, the Davis Cup hero moments. They don't remember what it costs. In this episode, Mark Philippoussis gets brutally honest about what happens when you get big money young (a multi-million FILA deal at 17), hit world-stopping highs (beating world #1 Pete Sampras at 19), then your body breaks, your career ends without your permission, and you're left dealing with the fallout, mentally, financially, and personally. What you'll learn in this episodeThe reality of making serious money at 17, and how it changes you. The mindset of a teenager taking down Pete Sampras (and why “no one expects you to win” can be a weapon). Comebacks aren't motivational quotes, they're rehab, dark days, and doing the work when no one's watching. What forced retirement does to your identity (especially when you never chose it). Losing millions, making mistakes, and why asking “stupid questions” is how you get smart with money. Recording Date: November 11, 2025 at the 2025 Fall Business Sports Luncheon. A Series hosted by Chris Holman since Joe Dumars spoke in 2004. Location: Capital Region International Airport (LAN) Todd Martin - Executive Leader, Keynote Speaker, Coach, and Retired Tennis Professional Todd Martin: From World-Class Competitor to Visionary Leader In this video with Todd's presentation: Todd emphasized resilience as a foundation of high performance: in tennis and business, setbacks are inevitable — but it's how you respond, adapt, and learn that separates champions. He stressed the value of team leadership and culture even in individualized fields. As a former World No. 4 and Davis Cup champion, he showed how being a trusted leader and mentor builds long-term value beyond individual wins. Todd highlighted the importance of innovation and reinvention — transitioning from pro-athlete to CEO, mentor and business strategist, he described how staying curious and leveraging one's legacy can create fresh opportunities. He discussed community impact and purpose — noting how he founded his youth-leadership nonprofit out of his early experiences, and how business leaders can strengthen their brand by intentionally giving back and aligning values with actions. Todd Martin is a former Olympian and World No. 4-ranked tennis player whose career was defined by excellence, leadership, and impact. He reached the singles finals of both the 1994 Australian Open and the 1999 US Open and was a cornerstone of the U.S. Davis Cup team from 1994 to 2002—helping secure the championship in 1995. Recognized by his peers for his integrity and insight, Martin served eight years as President of the ATP Tour Player Council, advocating for players and shaping the future of the sport. After retiring from professional play, he transitioned into coaching, mentoring U.S. Olympic Silver Medalist Mardy Fish and a young Novak Djokovic. Martin's post-playing career has been marked by visionary leadership. He served as CEO of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Head of Tennis at Beemok Capital, and is the Founder and President of Todd Martin Tennis. In May 2025, he joined Swing Racquet + Paddle as Chief Strategy and Operations Officer, continuing his commitment to innovation in racquet sports. Beyond the court and boardroom, Martin has made a lasting impact in his hometown of Lansing, Michigan. In 1993, he co-founded Todd Martin Youth Leadership, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering at-risk youth through tennis, education, life skills, and leadership development. For over 30 years, the organization has been a beacon of opportunity and growth for the community.
