Jemaine Clement joins Nerdtropolis Mayor Sean Tajipour on Reel Insights to talk about Hulu's new six-part Original series Alice and Steve. In this conversation, Clement breaks down playing Steve, a man whose relationship with his best friend Alice is turned upside down when he starts dating her 26-year-old daughter, Izzy.Clement opens up about the messy emotional chaos at the center of Alice and Steve, including why Izzy may actually be one of the most mature characters in the story and how Joel Fry's Daniel brings a grounded, hilarious presence to the series. He also talks about the “carousels of baggage” adults bring into love, friendship and conflict, and why people can sometimes give great relationship advice while still struggling in their own relationships. The conversation also dives into where Steve lands on the Jemaine Clement chaos scale. Clement explains how Steve lives between two different images of himself, sometimes confident and sometimes not confident at all, while getting pulled into a situation that becomes increasingly dramatic. He also shares why Alice and Steve feels more grounded and realistic than many of the roles he is usually known for, even as the story pushes its characters to extremes.Clement also reflects on the real friendships that helped him understand Steve and Alice's bond, including the kind of friends who still feel close no matter how much time has passed. Plus, Sean and Jemaine talk about emotional maturity, adult friendship, complicated love, revenge and what makes Alice and Steve a messy anti-romantic comedy.Visit Nerdtropolis.comFacebook.com/nerdtropolisInstagram.com/nerdtropolisTwitter.com/nerdtropolisTikTok.com/@nerdtropolis

For this week's episode, I convinced my guest, comedian/actor Eugene Mirman (Bob's Burgers, Flight Of The Conchords, Delocated), to let me record my 500th episode 7 years in advance in order to capitalize on his star power. We discuss the magic of comedy albums & comedy concert films; recording visual comedy for an album, Eugene's 7 LP Sub Pop masterwork I'm Sorry (You're Welcome), which includes 45 minutes of him crying and 159 orgasms, Eugene's scrapped "jokes for animals", his new LP & video special Here Comes The Whimsy, Eugene pushing the boundaries of a physical audio release by having it also available as a chair or a sack of flour that you have to carry around like a baby, how Eugene records his parts for the Bob's Burgers' songs. PLUS Eugene surprises me with a music film (5 minutes before recording) to discuss: "What The Hell Happened To Blood, Sweat & Tears," which is about the band being blackmailed into performing behind the Iron Curtain by the U.S. government. So let's join Eugene in sending fifty tap shoes to a restaurant of his choice on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!EUGENE MIRMAN: www.eugenemirman.comprettygoodfriends.comHERE COMES THE WHIMSY: EUGENE'S NEW FULL STAND-UP SPECIAL:www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHPEaN1DxKwREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss. 396 Mortal Kombat 2 Invincible Finale Boys Backlash Flight of the ConchordsDoom Scrolling IntroSteph kicks things off with a Tip Top canned cocktail (Jungle Bird) while the Foos recap a packed weekend: Joe's work family-day picnic vibes, notes for next year (more trucks, coffee cart dreams, boba cart fantasies), and a throwback hang with old band friends at Richie's birthday — the same house where they used to throw teenage ragers. Joe lands a darkly perfect joke: the only time people call you “young” at 40 is at your funeral. Then Florida delivers, as always: a homeless man allegedly catches a felony after throwing an open ketchup packet at a Good Samaritan who checked on him — with the real story being the drugs they reportedly found afterward. Florida stays undefeated.Geeking Out is stacked: the Foos review Mortal Kombat 2 (May 8) and declare it's basically a full-on Johnny Cage movie — bigger scale, more classic characters, more fan service, and fight scenes that feel like the game's arenas brought to life. They roast a friend for making it halfway through the movie before realizing he thought he was watching Street Fighter. They also hit the Invincible season 4 finale fallout: Mark's trauma, Thragg stepping up as the looming big threat, Viltrumite chaos, and the internet's meme machine going into overdrive (mustaches included). Then it's The Boys discourse: the newest episode getting the lowest rating of the series, pacing complaints, and the show flirting with burnout — plus the wild release idea of the series finale in 4DX one day early… and the local showings basically selling out instantly. From there it's rapid-fire: Green Day's upcoming comedy movie Nimrods (Legion M involvement), the Swatch x Audemars Piguet “Royal Pop” collab causing real-world chaos (lines, cops, pepper spray) over a watch you can't even buy online, and a Mortal Kombat trivia quiz where Steph nearly goes perfect… until the razor-hat question exposes the Kung Lao/Liu Kang mix-up.Here's What I Would Do wraps with two dilemmas:Tori (Burbank) thinks a married coworker is crossing the line with “work spouse” energy and wants to shut it down without workplace fallout.Alyssa (Costa Mesa) agreed to location sharing with her boyfriend and now feels watched — and the Foos call it what it is: modern convenience turning into surveillance real fast. Before the outro, they shout out the Flight of the Conchords show at the Greek (their first time in years), with surprise moments and guests — and plenty of “Netflix is a joke” energy.ChaptersDoom Scrolling IntroIntroTip Top Jungle Bird canned cocktail + weekend recapWork family day picnic notes coffee cart boba cart talkOld band friends Richie birthday throwback rager houseFlorida man felony over ketchup packet + drugs foundGeeking Out Mortal Kombat 2 review Johnny Cage movieFriend thought it was Street Fighter until halfway throughInvincible season 4 finale trauma Thragg Viltrumites memesThe Boys lowest rated episode discourse pacing burnoutThe Boys finale in 4DX one day early sold out scrambleGreen Day movie Nimrods Legion M summer releaseSwatch Audemars Piguet Royal Pop collab chaos lines copsMortal Kombat trivia quiz Steph almost perfectHere's What I Would Do Married coworker flirting Tori BurbankHere's What I Would Do Location sharing feels like surveillance Alyssa Costa MesaFlight of the Conchords at the Greek recapOutro + Doom Scrolling OutroMortal Kombat 2, Johnny Cage, Invincible season 4 finale, Thragg, Viltrumites, The Boys backlash, 4DX finale, Green Day Nimrods, Legion M, Swatch Audemars Piguet Royal Pop, Florida ketchup felony, Flight of the Conchords Greek Theatre, work spouse, location sharing

We're not all cyborgs yet! ATTT is in total lockstep with our good friend Joe Lavelle on the subject of a.i. - we hate it. We hate that it's being foisted on us, doing lasting damage in multiple ways, and we hate that for many, it's a shortcut to thinking - a way to delegate all thought to a bot. We'd rather be writing our own blurbs about this brand new episode, thank you very much. Top Ten Songs AGAINST A.I. is a bit high-concepty, but the basic jist is that these are songs about being wary of and resisting an upredictable and scary future, while also featuring songs that emphasize humanity over machinery. Welcome to the kick off of Transmissions' new season with your host, Jason P. Woodbury, after a wonderful summer mini-series from Tyler Wilcox, All One Song: A Neil Young Podcast. We first encountered this week's guest, New Zealand songwriter, actor, and composer Bret McKenzie, as one half of the indie pop/comedy duo Flight of the Conchords in the mid-2000s. But did you know that before that, he was a member of one of New Zealand's most popular reggae party bands? "Just for context, reggae music in New Zealand is kind of rock music in America or maybe even country," McKenzie says. "Outside Jamaica, New Zealand has the highest sales of Bob Marley records in the world. And it's the music you hear playing in the background when you're out." Since then, he's gone onto composer for film and TV projects like The Simpsons, The Muppets, Spongebob Squarepants, and more, and in 2022, he released Songs Without Jokes via Sub Pop Records. Inspired by vintage Los Angeles pop, the record showcased McKenzie sans obvious jokes, but not without levity and good humor. His new album, Freak Out City came out on August 15. Bolstered by vintage electric piano and groovy and psychedelic touches, it finds McKenzie expanding his Nilsson-esque palette with touches of Steely Dan, JJ Cale, and Todd Rundgren. McKenzie joins us on Transmissions to discuss the rabbit holes of modern life, cutting the record with studio legends like Leland Sklar, the Conchords specific brand of comedy, and shares details about his proposed Emmet Otter reboot with Ed Helms. We're brought to you by Aquarium Drunkard, an independent music media crew headed by Justin Gage. Over at Aquarium Drunkard, you'll gain access to 20 years of music writing, playlist, essays, mixtapes, radio special, podcasts, videos and more.

At 20 years old, Amanda Knox found herself alone in an Italian jail cell, falsely accused of a brutal murder, and facing 26 years in prison. She was called “Luciferina” in the courtroom – and far worse in the tabloids. But Amanda never stopped fighting to clear her name and tell her story – most recently, as Executive Producer of a new miniseries on Hulu. In this episode, Amanda opens up about how music became a lifeline – via the three CDs she was allowed in her cell and a paper keyboard to practice piano. Music connected Amanda to her fellow prisoners, to the outside world, and to the silly, optimistic person she'd always been. Here are her songs. Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

It's "Business Time" here at Laugh Tracks Legends -- and by that we mean it's time to salute Flight of the Conchords, a musical comedy duo from New Zealand who took a song with that title to the top of the charts in the mid-2000s. Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clements met in college where they honed a "folk duo" act, blending sharp satire with great musical chops. They won raves at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Melbourne International Comedy Competition which launched a career that includes (to date) several studio albums (including a Grammy winner), sold out concert tours, a BBC radio series, and a beloved HBO comedy series. Not bad for a couple of lads who bill themselves as "the almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand”! As always, find extra cuts at laughtracksradio.com -- or check out our YouTube channel (Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy) where you can get new episodes as well as a complete archive. In this show we will look at how kisses have been contracts, like sealing marriages and how where some of that comes from.
