In this episode I talk to Bazza (Barry Burrowes). On a recent 4WD trip to the N.T. I called into the Policeman's Museum in Timber Creek. I found Bazza the Curator/Caretaker. What a man! Bazza's in his eighties doing an amazing job showing the tourists through and recounting all with tales of daring and adventure.  Bazza's local knowledge is excellent and he has lived a very rich life and has a certain life knowledge and way with words not often found today. We talk knackaroos, a few wars, pot belly stove manufacture, travel and of course there has to be a fishing and crocodile story. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. I have included the trip advisor link to the museum below. Bazza also sent me a bunch of photos of Anzac Day at Timber Creek they had a tribute to the Knackaroos. Executive Director of the Cambridge Historical Society Marieke Van Damme affectionately calls anyone working in the museum field “Museum People.” On her excellent podcast of the same name, she interviews museum people every episode. Many museum people are museum workers. In 2016, together with other noted museum professionals (Sarah Erdman, Claudia Ocello and Dawn Estabrooks Salerno), Marieke asked why museum workers leave the field. Last month, they published a summary of the findings titled, Leaving the Museum Field. As Marieke explains, she always knew that working in the museum field is hard. Museum workers face difficult conditions, and some of the very same things that make working in the museum field desirable (passion for the mission) contribute to the bad (discriminatory societal and economic systems, student loans, intense job competition).Marieke has had countless conversation that begin, “I love working in museums, but I don’t think I can do it anymore because of [insert reason here]”.Leaving the Museum Field is now the most-viewed article on the AAM Alliance blog since it launched a year ago.Through her research, Marieke tries to better understand the difficult conditions museum workers face. Though her projects like Joyful Museums, she provides resources and writings about creating a positive workplace culture. Guest: Marieke Van Damme Club Archipelago

Welcome to episode 24 of the Wonder Junkie Podcast, featuring historian Matt Brosnan and curator at the Imperial War Museum and the new exhibition, People Power: Fighting For Peace. People Power: Fighting for Peace, is the UK’s first major exhibition to explore the evolution of the anti-war movement from the First World War to the present day. The exhibition tells the stories of individual and collective acts of anti-war protest, and the varied forms of creative expression used to campaign against war. In the exhibit, you can view rare items such as a handwritten poem by Siegfried Sassoon and original sketches for the peace symbol. Matt Brosnan, Historian, and Curator of People Power: Fighting for Peace at IWM says: “This exhibition is the first of its kind and displays a number of fascinating items which have never been exhibited before. In IWM’s Centenary year, this major exhibition continues our mission to explore war and conflict from multiple perspectives – highlighting the peace movement and its important role in British history.” Due to Matt having a limited amount of time on the opening day of the exhibit my interview with him only lasted about 10 minutes which isn’t quite long enough for a podcast in its own right. This is ok though, as it’s allowed me to get more creative with this episode and create a short audio documentary. For those of you who might remember, I used to produce The Blues Magazine Show with Big Boy Bloater on TeamRock Radio and whilst producing that show, we created a documentary called “The 21st Century Blues” which is still one of my favourite things I’ve ever done in radio and broadcast. So, I thought this would be a great opportunity to dust off my producing hat and hopefully create something really special for a subject matter that deserves all the attention it can get. My thanks to the wonderful team at the Imperial War Museum and to Matt Brosnan for making time to speak to me about the exhibit, if I could describe the exhibit in one simple way it would be; thought provoking.   The exhibit is open until August 28th, 2017 and you can buy tickets online here - http://www.iwm.org.uk/exhibitions/iwm-london/fighting-for-peace Credits All audio, music and sound effects acquired legally through the Creative Commons (CC) License, Fair Use Copyright or purchased legally through a provider.
