CraftLit - Serialized Classic Literature for Busy Book Lovers

Ep. 680: Cranford | Chapter 2 Book talk begins at 6:13. This week's chapter is a sobering reminder that small towns sometimes carry the heaviest stories. Also, we get another battle over Dickens vs. Johnson (yep, that again). --------------------------------------------------------------- • 02:40 - : Listen to “The Blog” (4 min vs 19 min on “The Gist—yes, he titled them in reverse). This is one of the Long-Covid papers we've been waiting for. PEM—post-exertional malaise is “feeling tired/sore a day after a workout” on crack. • PEM pain and brain fog can last up to two weeks after exertion…The Rank Study he mentions is the group saying “duh m'dude. If you've been in bed for a year yer gonna be tired after a workouta. You gotta get back on your exercise routine and qitcherbellyaching” —a theory that's led to permanent patient paralysis. The other study is big because it indicates that the damage is mitochondrial, not systematic (i.e., we're getting plenty of blood to our muscles. The muscles just can't do anything WITH that oxygen) • —and from the People who created the Visible app that has saved my life (MakeVisible.com) • 03:20 Snake Oil!!! • 04:03 RAFFLE of "Knitting Companion," the amazing ergonomic book. But the meaning is the same.) • 15:15 - Biblical DebORah (the pronunciation that should be used ahem) read about her in Judges 4:4. • 15:36 - “Strong minded” women - yeah, that was an insult. Kinda like “She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted…” when Elizabeth Warren tried to read a letter from Coretta Scott King into the Congressional Record in February 2017. See Mary Wollstonecraft on masculine women on • 17:50 - - this is not the one I remembered (they haven't digitised their entire collection) but it DOES have a shocking poem in it—by a 14 year old girl. • 18:50 - Just a heads up: Gaskell sort of doesn't really quote things accurately—at this time code she's sort of quoting Hamlet, she also makes up words like Brunonian • 20:02 - Sort of quoting Alexander Pope “Imitations of Horace” 1733 • 20:17 - Sort of quoting/sub-referencing Spenser's “The Faerie Queene” IV:3;32, 1596 • 20:55 - Nasty cruel Railroads. In this episode of Elizabethtown.A.I., we dive into Give 270's latest 20/20 Unicorn raffle, featuring a truly one-of-a-kind prize: a rare 1986 Blanton's Frankfort Bicentennial 200 bottle. Released to commemorate Frankfort's bicentennial, this historic bourbon is one of the earliest special releases of Blanton's and is unlike any other. We'll break down what makes this bottle so unique, how you can get in on the action, and the impact Give 270 continues to have in central Kentucky. Tune in as we talk bourbon, philanthropy, and the excitement of this can't-miss giveaway! SOURCE DOCUMENT:Give 270 to give away rare 1986 Blanton's Frankfort Bicentennial 200 bottleELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (March 5, 2025) – Give 270, an Elizabethtown nonprofit, has announced that a rare bottle of Blanton's: Frankfort Bicentennial 200 will be the grand prize given away during their latest 20/20 Unicorn raffle, set for Wednesday, April 2. Released in 1986 to celebrate the official bicentennial of Frankfort, Kentucky, this limited-edition Blanton's was bottled at exactly 86 proof. It holds the distinction of being the earliest special release of Blanton's. In this one-time release, a unique stopper was used, featuring the Kentucky State Capitol on one side and the State of Kentucky on the other, marking the only time the classic horse and jockey design was not used. Notably, the bottle and box are free of any "Blanton's" branding. Instead, the label reads, "The Bicentennial Distilling Company, Frankfort, Kentucky." The official “Frankfort 200 Bicentennial” logo is printed on the bottle itself with no paper label. This same logo was used throughout Frankfort for its official marketing material. This release marked the first time a Blanton's bottle did not feature a paper label. Give 270's 20/20 Unicorn raffles offer $20 tickets for two chances to win from a curated selection of 20 prizes from a specific distillery, including an exceptionally rare "unicorn" prize. In addition to the grand prize, each $20 ticket purchased in this raffle offers participants a chance to win from a curated assortment of other allocated and limited release Blanton's products, including an eight-bottle multi-color set spelling “BLANTON'S,” a seven-bottle multi-color set, a Blanton's Takara Gold Derby Edition from 1999 and more. During the raffle, prizes numbered two through 20 will be drawn initially, with all tickets returning to the tumbler for an opportunity to win the grand prize. The upcoming Unicorn raffle is set to take place live on Give 270's Facebook page and YouTube channel. All proceeds will benefit Give 270's work supporting worthwhile organizations and initiatives in central Kentucky. Tickets are available for purchase until 7 p.m. on the night of the drawing and there is no limit to the number of tickets purchased per individual."We are thrilled to offer this rare and unique Blanton's Frankfort Bicentennial 200 bottle as the grand prize in our latest 20/20 Unicorn raffle," said Eric Clemens, Board Chair of Give 270. “This bottle is a true unicorn, and we're excited to offer the chance to win it while supporting important local initiatives in central Kentucky."To purchase tickets and stay up-to-date on raffles and events hosted by Give 270, visit give270.org. Photos available here

Jeremy Robinson-Leon is the founder of Moonburger, an ambitious chain of restaurants whose core focus is bringing high-quality fast food to the masses. We personally love Moonburger and have visited locations in Kingston and New Paltz, and it's now operating in Poughkeepsie and Brooklyn. In this episode, we hear about Jeremy's journey to opening these restaurants and how he enlisted the help of some big-name talent to assist him in developing a signature plant-based patty. We also hear about the company's pivot to serving beef and what this all means for future expansion plans. We're rooting for Moonburger, and had a great time catching up with its very cool founder. Also on the show, it's the return of Three Things where Aliza and Matt discuss what is exciting in the world of restaurants, cookbooks, and the food world as a whole. On this episode: Cake Zine's Raffle for LA Fire Relief, Care and Feeding by Laurie Woolever is a book you need to read (read twice if you work in food media), you can freeze pancake batter, Janevca in Victoria, British Columbia is a favorite meal of the year. Also: Peaches HotHouse is a staple for fried chicken in Brooklyn, and staying in Canada, Minami in Vancouver opened our eyes to aburi-style sushi.Do you enjoy This Is TASTE? Women Are Making Major Moves On The Pickleball Court   Move over, fellas! Women are making major moves in pickleball, and The Debbie Nigro Show just got the inside scoop from two powerhouse ladies leading the charge—Alita Friedman and Catherine Barton. If you haven't caught the pickleball bug yet, let me break it down for you: It's fast, it's fun, and it's the ultimate social sport. And now, thanks to these two trailblazers, women finally have their own place in the game with the launch of the National Women's Pickleball Foundation which joins the National Women's Pickleball Association.   The Power of Pickleball: Fun, Fitness & Philanthropy Alita and Catherine are turning their love of the game into a movement. Here's how: Bringing Women Together – Pickleball is for all ages, and women are loving the camaraderie. It's competitive, but it's also social—so whether you're in it to win it or just there to meet new friends, it's a win-win! Giving Back Big Time – The National Women's Pickleball Foundation is partnering with major charities like the Special Olympics, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and even the Girl Scouts to make an impact beyond the court. Creating a Membership Club for Women – The National Women's Pickleball Association is launching with events, exclusive benefits, and ways to keep the community connected.   Why Pickleball Is the Hottest Sport Right Now If you thought pickleball was just for retirees, think again! The sport is growing at lightning speed, with indoor courts popping up everywhere—even in old Bed Bath & Beyond stores! (Now that's a makeover we can get behind.) And if you're worried about injuries (hello, ER stories!), the ladies have some pro tips:  *Stretch first. Seriously, don't skip this.  *Wear the right shoes. No, your running sneakers won't cut it.  *Take a lesson. Learn the basics before diving in!   Pickleball Lingo You Need to Know Want to sound like a pro? Here are some must-know terms: Stay out of the kitchen – Not the one in your house! This is the no-volley zone near the net. Dink – A soft shot that makes your opponent scramble. Pickled – When your team scores zero points in a game. Ouch! Shake & Bake – A killer combo move that leaves your opponent in the dust.    The Big Event – Join the Fun in Boca Raton, Fla!
