Why settle down to some humdrum uncongenial billet, when excitement, romance, danger and a decent living were all going begging together?"- A. J. Raffles, The Ides of March. The Amateur Cracksman is the first collection of stories about A. J. Raffles, gentleman, cricketer, and thief. After stopping his old school friend, Bunny Manders, from a desperate attempt at suicide, Raffles introduces the unsuspecting Bunny to a new way of earning a living, burglary. Though frequently horrified by Raffles's actions, the conscience-stricken Bunny stands by him through all their adventures, firm to his promise, "When you want me, I'm your man!" What did Tudor families do at Christmas once the feasting slowed, the music quietened, and the Yule log glowed on the hearth? They played games, and some of them are still incredibly fun today. Welcome to Day 4 of my Tudor Christmas Advent series! I'm historian and author Claire Ridgway, and today we're stepping into the warm, bustling world of Tudor fireside entertainment. From nobles in great halls to sailors aboard the Mary Rose, people in Tudor England filled the long winter evenings with: - Dice games like Cent, Raffles, and Passage - Card games from gentle Noddy to high-stakes Primero — Henry VIII's favourite - Board games including backgammon (“tables”), chess, Fox and Geese, and Nine Men's Morris - Shove-board and early billiards for the elite - And simple household fun like pick-up sticks These games weren't just entertainment. They were connection - a way for families and communities to share laughter, competition, mischief, and companionship throughout the Twelve Days of Christmas. If you're enjoying this festive journey through Tudor history, please like, subscribe, and ring the bell - more Christmas magic is coming tomorrow!   #TudorChristmas #TudorHistory #ChristmasTraditions #HistoryWithClaire #HenryVIII #MedievalGames #TwelveDaysOfChristmas #AnneBoleynFiles #ChristmasHistory

In this episode of That Don't Sound Right, Peter and Cecil dive into one of Cecil's most unbelievable real-life stories — the day he actually won a brand-new 1990 Mazda Miata in a high school raffle while he was in pharmacy school. From the shock of hearing his name called, to picking up the shiny red roadster, to the reactions on campus, Cecil walks through every twist of this once-in-a-lifetime moment. The hosts mix nostalgia, humor, and everyday practicality as they unpack the excitement of owning a new roadster… and the unexpected tax bill that came with it. In true That Don't Sound Right fashion, the story ends with a grounded decision that still gets laughs, head shakes, and “you did what?” reactions today. If you love real stories, good conversation, and the kind of luck that makes you say “that don't sound right”, this episode is a ride worth taking. Connect with us:

What do you wish I asked this guest? What was your "quotable moment" from this episode? Ten years of spark, craft, and community converge in Arlington, Texas. I sat down with Kacie from Kacie's Corner to share everything you need to know about the 10th annual DFW Pagan Unity Fest. From a full day of vendors and hands-on learning to a public Yule ritual and a charity raffle for the North Texas Food Bank, this milestone gathering shows how modern pagan community thrives when service, celebration, and storytelling come together. We walk through the schedule so you can plan your day: a free festival on Saturday, November 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 2001 California Lane on the UU church grounds. Expect returning favorites and new artisans, including holistic healers and regional artists, plus the final appearance of a beloved vendor, Venus 6 Gallery. Classes in the Grove run 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., opening with Harvest in Gratitude by Jennifer Culver and closing with Kacie's Webs of Community workshop focused on building real, resilient connections. At 3 p.m., Jormungandholl DFW leads a community Yule ritual right in Vendors Village, bringing intention and warmth to the heart of the fest.We also spotlight the annual raffle that turns shared excitement into direct impact. Episode summary'Tis the season… to plan smarter. The Home Team swap holiday menu takes (turkey wars!) and then get practical about running fundraising events between Thanksgiving and New Year's. From low-lift “open house” formats to creative themes and revenue add-ons, they break down how to cut through a crowded calendar, boost attendance, and tie event moments to year-end giving without turning it into a hard ask.Who this episode is forFundraisers, event planners, and nonprofit marketers looking to host a December event, drive last-minute donations, and leave donors smiling (and subscribed). In this episode (highlights)Why timing matters: avoid Thu–Sat nights; try Tue/Wed evenings or a Sunday matinee.A low-stress format that works: drop-in donor open house with light bites, festive vibes, and a short auction that can close later in the Handbid app.Theme ideas that actually draw a crowd: ugly-sweater social, outdoor movie night, après-ski/Northern Lights party, rooftop glow-night, karaoke, and more.Family-friendly revenue plays: gingerbread house contest with $1 per vote, “Taste-Of” sample stations with ticket voting, pay-to-play mini-games.Tree magic: themed Christmas tree auction (include delivery/setup/take-down in the package).Ticketing tactics: “Buy One, Gift One” to bring new faces; couples ticket with 2 comp tickets for first-time guests.Light-touch giving: giving tree / envelope wall; food or toy drive tie-ins; corporate match prompts via Handbid's Double the Donation integration.Data with a purpose: capture emails—and actually follow up in January.Actionable playbookPick the slot: Tue/Wed evening 6–8pm or Sun 2–4pm.Choose a format: Open house + mini auction (mobile bidding stays open until Sun 5pm).Anchor a theme (choose one):Ugly Sweater Social at a brewery/warehouseHoliday Movie Matinee (blankets, cocoa, popcorn)Après-Ski / Northern Lights tent partyRooftop Glow Night (DJ, light-up dance floor)Add revenue stations:Gingerbread Build-Off: $1 = 1 vote; team “bets” on winnersTaste-Of tables with vote ticketsPay-to-play quick games; festive karaoke showdownSpotlight one showcase lot: Themed Christmas tree with delivery, setup, and post-season removal.Lower the ask, raise the match: Prompt employer match on every ticket/donation checkout.Grow the list: Run “Buy One, Gift One” tickets for new-to-org attendees; collect email + SMS consent.Aftercare: Schedule a warm “thanks + impact + match reminder” touch the first week of January.Sample run-of-show (open house)6:00p Doors + check-in | cocoa, cider, photo corner6:15p Soft open of auction (mobile)6:45p 5-minute welcome + impact story + match reminder7:15p Gingerbread/Taste-Of voting closes7:50p Raffle pull / tree auction highlight8:00p Guests depart; auction remains open until Sun 5:00p for remote biddersIdeas mentioned (quick list)Donor Open House (drop-in)Gingerbread House Contest ($1 votes)Taste-Of mini-bites with vote ticketsKaraoke ShowdownOutdoor Movie Night (Elf, Home Alone, Die Hard)Themed Tree Auction (with delivery/setup/take-down)Buy One, Gift One tickets (first-time guests)Giving Tree / Envelope WallFood/Toy Drive add-onCorporate Match prompts at checkoutResources & linksHandbid (tickets, mobile bidding, checkout)Double the Donation integration for employer matches (in Handbid ticket/donation flows)CTAIf you're planning a December event or want to layer a mini-auction onto your year-end campaign, Handbid makes it easy to sell tickets, run mobile bidding, and capture matches—all in one place. Woah, this is a show FULLLLL of goodness today! First up is Michele Zipp, a Wedding Officiant and ritualist, Reiki Master, writer, editor, and founder of Resisterhood New Paltz. They are well into their Red Tent Drive where the community comes together to donate menstrual hygiene products for those in need. All donations go to Family of New Paltz and their affiliates. Historically, this drive helps folks at Family throughout the year until the next drive. That's where you come in … helping them by donating maxi pads or money so they can purchase pads. Pads only as per Family and what's most requested and needed. They'll be celebrating the end of their drive with a Period Party, hoping to push the donations over the top, and celebrating their partners all in the name of dignity and love on Sunday, November 16th from 1pm until 2:30pm at Redeemer Church in New Paltz. With performances by Perennial and Resisterhood Community Choir featuring members of the B2s! Enter to win their amazing raffle — dinner and grounds tickets for two at Mohonk Mountain House. Corvette Raffle leads to Controversy

A Catholic priest in Pennsylvania took his parishioners for a joyride after confessing to rigging a church fundraising raffle for a Corvette Stingray. The scheme was run with unchecked authority over parish funds, enabling him to award phony prizes to friends while running up a massive $300,000 American Express tab paid by the church. This shocking case highlights the petty corruption and financial malfeasance that runs rampant when religious institutions operate without oversight, exploiting the faithful for personal gain and high-end consumer luxury.  News Source: Pennsylvania Priest Accused of Rigging Corvette Raffle, Using Church Funds to Pay Off American Express Bill By Hemet Mehta for The Friendly Atheist August 11th, 2025
