Jim Tassoni, CEO of Armored Wealth Strategies, joins us for his technical outlook on markets and resources. Jim is a momentum-focused trader targeting mid-term trends, and in this conversation, he shares how he's navigating one of the most volatile stretches of the year. Despite a recent bounce in markets, Jim sees continued downside risk across major indices. He explains why his team initiated a short position on SPY, where they'd increase it, and what key technical levels they're watching to shift bullish. Jim also outlines a profitable short trade in IWM (small caps) and why the construction of the index keeps him cautious. We then dive into gold and the broader precious metals space, where Jim remains long and bullish, but he's watching for a better re-entry point after a strong move. He outlines extension targets up to $3,600 for gold and levels of interest on GDX and copper. On energy, Jim shares insights into a well-timed short crude oil trade and the critical levels he's tracking that could signal a reversal. Finally, we wrap with international exposure, as Jim details his active long positions in Japan and China, including FXI and EWJ, and his key stop-loss levels. It's a sea of red across global markets. Equities are plunging, volatility is surging, and only a few safe havens are in the green: the US dollar, bonds, and volatility indices. Marc Chandler, Managing Partner at Bannockburn Global Forex and Editor of the Marc to Market website. Marc joins us to unpack the major market moves, including how currencies are reacting amid surging volatility, global trade tensions, and a growing fear of a longer-term downturn. Key Theme: Global markets are rattled as trade war fears and volatility spark widespread selling, prompting concerns over central bank responses and capital flight. Highlights from the discussion: Major equity indices plunge: S&P 500 down 8%, Nasdaq down 9%, and IWM (small caps) down 10% - just four days into April. Currency market reactions: Despite expectations of dollar strength post-tariffs, the USD sold off sharply, with the yen strengthening as US rates dropped. But then the dollar bounced back today. Volatility spikes: The VIX surges 34% to hit 40, marking a significant shift in sentiment and a surge in hedging activity. Gap theory in focus: Marc discusses technical "gap" patterns in equity markets and how they could hint at potential snapback or further downside. Commodity selloff: Gold drops $200 in days (though still over $3,000), silver plunges from $35 to $29, copper dropped huge from record highs, and oil falls below $62. Central bank watch: Powell signaled patience after a strong jobs report, but growing calls for emergency rate cuts suggest market stress could force action. In this episode of the Vienna Coffee House Conversations, Ivan Vejvoda is joined by historical scientist Luke Cooper to discuss Ukraine's resilience in the face of the ongoing Russian invasion and the broader geopolitical challenges facing the country. Cooper shares insights from his recent visits to cities like Kyiv, Dnipro, and Lviv, noting the surprising resilience and sense of normalcy among Ukrainians amidst conflict. He emphasizes the social and economic impacts of the war, including widespread displacement and the steadfast resolve of those in Russian-occupied regions awaiting liberation. The conversation explores Ukraine's economic strategies in response to the invasion, focusing on the government's shift from initially libertarian policies to a more Keynesian model that emphasizes public spending and wartime fiscal policy. Cooper explains how labor shortages, driven by both military conscription and migration, have impacted Ukraine's workforce, particularly in vital industrial sectors. These economic measures have helped stabilize the economy despite the ongoing challenges, but the Ukrainian government remains focused on sustaining external financial support to maintain its efforts. Finally, Cooper and Vejvoda consider the possible scenarios for ending the conflict, discussing public sentiment in Ukraine, the strategic importance of various frontlines, and the precarious international dependencies that affect the country's future. Cooper highlights the critical role of oil prices and international political dynamics, particularly in the United States, in shaping the war's trajectory. In closing, they briefly examine the UK's political landscape following the Labour Party's recent victory, noting its potential impact on UK-EU relations and international support for Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion.Luke Cooper is a historical sociologist and political scientist specializing in conflict, democracy, and European studies, currently serving as an Associate Professorial Research Fellow at the Conflict and Civicness Research Group at the London School of Economics (LSE). He directs the PeaceRep Ukraine Program and co-founded Another Europe is Possible, an advocacy group focused on progressive European politics. We find out about an exciting project run by the Imperial War Museum which explores how conflict has driven innovation in science and technology. Sponsored by Lloyd's Register Foundation, the project aims to discover how conflict has accelerated innovation, and how this has impacted on the world we live in today. Science and technology are the key factors in influencing the course of modern conflict. On land, at sea and in the air, innovation in technology has played a key role in the course of conflict during the twentieth Century. Warfare accelerates technological innovation as part of the wider war effort, and this in turn has a significant impact on civilian society. As the Imperial War Museum is a world-renowned authority on conflict history, the project gives audiences the opportunity to change their understanding about war. With over one million items in the IWM collection, this project will offer a range of a wide range of intellectual and emotional experiences. To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with Rob Rumble, lead curator of the project. They examine and discuss a number of artefacts in the collection, including the Cavity Magnetron, which became the preferred source of very high frequency radio waves in various radars and communication devices and led to a massive growth in microwave radar technology; public safety posters which educated and encouraged the public use of antiseptic to prevent infections, as well as for the use of safety harnesses whilst working from height; an example of the 'Davis' Submarine escape apparatus, an early type of oxygen rebreather invented in 1910; a lifejacket for a child; lifeboat navigation maps; a buoyant light; plastic armour; and a type of valve employed in early airborne interception and air to surface vessel radar equipment.
