Guitars for Vets: Healing power of music with Veterans

Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Patrick McGuire, Nashville Chapter Coordinator with Guitars for Vets, who highlights the nonprofit organization focused on sharing the healing power of music with our Veterans. Guitars for Vets (G4V) serves at-risk United States Veterans impacted by PTSD and other service-related trauma. Through their unique, 10-week structured guitar instruction program, G4V puts the healing power of music in the hands of our nation's heroes, helping to foster renewal, connection and community.During the interview, Patrick shares how the organization was founded in 2007 by guitar instructor, Patrick Nettesheim, and his student, Vietnam era Marine, Dan Van Buskirk, after realizing the guitar and lessons were a catalyst for positive human interaction and joy where it had once been lost. Patrick discusses the model and how guitars and lessons are provided at no cost to US Military Veterans who are referred by their doctor or a case/social worker at The Department of Veterans Affairs facilities. Ten private lessons are taught using practice guitars donated by the local community. Upon completion, the Veteran/student is awarded a new acoustic guitar and accessories. Patrick emphasizes the therapeutic benefits of learning guitar, citing its ability to help Veterans rewire their brains and find joy, while also highlighting the importance of volunteer instructors who possess patience, acceptance, gratitude, and empathy. The organization, which has about 170 chapters nationwide, relies on word-of-mouth and volunteer efforts to expand its reach and impact.Patrick wraps up explaining the need for financial contributions, donated guitars, and volunteer instructors to support the mission and continued growth of the organization. He emphasizes the importance of financial transparency and encourages listeners to visit the website for more information and to contact local chapter coordinators to get involved.Visit https://guitars4vets.org to learn more and to get involved with Guitars for Vets.https://www.facebook.com/GuitarsForVets/https://www.tiktok.com/@guitars_for_vetshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1zjBS5JiYhOeVLprWb8q_A

"Compassion is the antidote to suffering and harmfulness. Put simply, it is a sensitivity to suffering in self and others with a commitment to try to alleviate and prevent it." So says Psychologist Paul Gilbert, the godfather of Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), in an interview that inspires singer-songwriter Patrick McGuire of Straight White Teeth to create a new song called ‘NOTHING'S BY DESIGN'. Research has now revealed how our capacities for compassion evolved, how it works in our bodies and our brains, and when cultivated, is a source of courage and wisdom to address suffering. Compassionate courage lies in the willingness to see into the nature and causes of suffering - in ourselves, others and the human condition. On this episode of Battles & Banter, Avery is joined by Patrick McGuire and Matt Borders of "The History Things Podcast" for the first fictional battle episode in a long time; Avery, Pat & Matt tackle perhaps one of the most monumental battles in all of fantasy literature. From the pages and scenes of "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King", the guys travel to Middle Earth to discuss the Battle of Pelenor Fields aka Minas Tirith, which was one of the final climactic battles of the infamous War of the One Ring. Using mostly their experiences from viewing the film and some material from the book (don't get your hopes up, none of them have read it), the trio walk through the fight and banter about some of the key players such as Aragorn, Gandalf, Faramir, Theoden, Eowyn and even Lord Denethor. Strap in for a hilarious ride into the Pelenor Fields! Enjoy!

As 2020 winds down, the Battles & Banter team dish out their final episodes of the year. Avery & Codie are joined by Patrick McGuire of the "History Things Podcast" and Rich Condon of "Civil War Pittsburgh" to talk about the climax of one of the most overlooked campaigns of the American Civil War: The Battle of Nashville. Part of the Franklin-Nashville Campaign of 1864, the fighting around the famous Tennessee city between December 15-16 signaled not only an end to the campaign, but the end of John Bell Hood's Confederate Army of Tennessee as an effective fighting force. It was perhaps the most devastating military defeat for the Confederacy during the entire Civil War, which is probably why it is one of the least preserved major Civil War battlefields in the country next to Franklin just a few miles away. The guys talk about the campaign and the lasting consequences of the Union victory that marked the beginning of the end for the Southern Confederacy. Enjoy!

Music Think Tank article "7 Top Marketing Strategies For Musicians" by Patrick McGuire of The Bandzoogle Blog. For many artists, marketing is somewhat at odds with who they are and what they do. Since music and the act writing songs is often deeply personal and emotional, getting into a music marketing strategy mindset might seem foreign, fake or forced for some musicians. Sadly, this doesn't change the fact that it's never been more difficult for new artists to put their music in front of listeners. Between music streaming platforms and the cheap cost of DIY home recording technology, there's more music being released now than at any other point in history. Tens of thousands of new songs are being released each day, and, in many cases, what determines whether each of these songs will go on to find an audience or not depends on how they're marketed. ---- Support the Dan Rozenblum Family Fire Relief Fund here. Can children like Wallace and Dukie be saved? Tapping Into "The Wire" uses the television series as a road map for exploring connections between inner-city poverty and drug-related violence. Dr. Peter Beilenson and Patrick McGuire have written a compelling, highly-readable examination of urban policy and public health issues impacting cities across the nation. Each chapter recounts scenes from "The Wire," placing the characters' challenges into the broader context of public policy.Dr. Peter Beilenson is Howard County's health officer.
