Raye is a singer, songwriter and producer from London. Besides being an artist in her own right, she's also been a songwriter for other artists since she was a teenager. She's co-written songs for Beyoncé, Charli XCX, and Ellie Goulding. In 2023, she released her debut album, My 21st Century Blues. The first single, “Escapism," became her first song to hit #1 in the UK. It's gone platinum in the US, the UK, and seven other countries. It features guest vocals from 070 Shake. When she was here in LA on tour, I talked to Raye about how she made “Escapism.” For more, visit songexploder.net/raye. If you liked this episode, you might like Christine and the Queens' episode from 2018. Christine and the Queens and 070 Shake have also collaborated together. You'll find that episode at songexploder.net/christine-and-the-queens.
Unstoppable South London native Raye has penned songs for Beyonce and John Legend, opened for Kali Uchis and SZA this summer, and is a part of British Vogue's 'The Vogue 25,” honoring the women defining Britain in 2023. An industry disrupter, Raye's debut album My 21st Century Blues took a decade to make and is a deeply personal account of her painful experiences in the music industry. “Worth It” is an empowering pop gem.

When Cowboy Junkies were putting together "Early 21st Century Blues" in 2005, their response to a post 9/11 world where the possibility of greater understanding and unity had, as ever being bulldozed by the rush to war, they were looking to find songs with an anti-violence message, in all the possible senses. On the 2004 "One Soul Now" tour, they had been playing George Harrison's "Isn't It A Pity", and that was a song that translated perfectly to that album's themes. In this episode, we revisit the live and studio versions of "Isn't It A Pity?" and Michael Timmins and Alan Anton talk us through the intricacies of capturing the essence of Harrison's typically idiosyncratic song. Gang we are so excited to have none other than RAYE on the podcast this week, one of our favourite artists and an absolute icon on the British music scene at just 25-years-old. The South London gal released her debut album independently on 3 Feb after a very public dispute with her label last summer – they'd stifled her and controlled her creatively for seven years – and now, is telling her story on her own terms and enjoying more commercial success than ever before (her most recent amaze single, Escapism, went to No1). Ellie was unwell for this one (*sob*) and so Kathleen sat down to talk to RAYE about her incredible journey and resilience, from surviving abuse at the hands of the music industry's darkest figures, to thriving as an independent artist after calling out injustice. We get deep about forgiveness, standing up for artists, Black Mirror-worthy media events, the power of therapy and finally having your moment. In 2018, RAYE performed “Ice Cream Man” as an unreleased song named “Ice Cream” during her headlining tour soon changing the name & verse 2 in 2022 for her debut album “My 21st Century Blues” promotion tour, My Story So Far Tour. The song was kept as an unreleased song for 4 to 5 years which in 2022 RAYE announced that the song will be on her debut album, “My 21st Century Blues.” RAYE announced this via BBC Radio 1 interview-getting asked what songs will be the most significant on the album. She described it as being “most difficult but important records to me” & “about being a woman and going through dark things that shouldn't have to happen for a woman, in this industry, in this life, through experiences.” She also spoke out that the album is a vent of her stories.source: RAYE reveals official 'My 21st Century Blues' tracklist (yahoo.com)Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Austin TX has evolved for better and worse over the past 50 years and Texas blues guitar rock legend Van Wilks has been witness to and in the middle of all of it. In fact the city named November 6th Honorary Van Wilks Day in 1997. Van gets much love from guitar wizards like Eric Johnson and Billy Gibbons, and songwriting masters like Christopher Cross, each of whom were featured on Van's last record 21st Century Blues. Billy and Van have been old school road dogs for many moons and he's written several songs for ZZ Top over the years. But he's also been a long time teacher of his brand of guitar magic for young and old. Great rap with a legend.

The world in tumult. Political instability. War.Yes, that was the far off world of 2005. Thank heavens those times never came again...In the aftermath of 9/11, of the invasion of Iraq, the golden promise of the end of the Cold War just over a decade earlier seemed to be disappearing and memories of Vietnam cane back strong. In the face of that, Cowboy Junkies did what the great bands did in the '60s and made a protest record, "Early 21st Century Blues', an album of mostly cover versions taken from the days of the counter-culture. As we take you through the album with Michael Timmins and Alan Anton, we'll discuss its conceptual nature, encounter a returning John Timmins, marvel at Richie Havens' hands, discover an unusual source for cover art, learn of a rare endorsement from Yoko and hear about an unfinished gem from the sessions that's still deep in the archives - the survival of some ancient ones and zeroes permitting...We're now taking a break for the summer, so please, remember to subscribe to "Music Is The Drug" at your favourite podcast provider - Apple, Amazon, Google, Spotify, Deezer, Stitcher, TuneIn, Podchaser and all the rest so you don't miss out when we return at the start of September."Cowboy Junkies - Music Is The Drug" is hosted by Dave Bowler, author of the authorised biography of the band. #636 - Mose Allison The Mose Allison Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Throughout the last 18 years, Paul has been honored to welcome some truly legendary artists. On this episode we have a short interview with Mose Allison. Mose Allison was born in Mississippi in 1927 and passed away in Hilton Head Island in 2016. He was a man more concerned with the present than the past. Most was a jazz and blues pianist and singer, as well as songwriter and recording artist. In fact, Mose Allison was called “one of the finest songwriters in 20th-Century Blues.” There are a lot of these interviews that we want to get out there and into the world. You can help in this mission, the mission of “helping people tell their stories,” by going to thepaulleslie.com and then click on “Support the Show,” Thanks to everyone who contributes or tells a friend about The Paul Leslie Hour. There's a Reddit question I can't stop thinking about in which someone wanted to know what life was like in the 20th Century because they were born at the top of the 21st and couldn't imagine it. They particularly couldn't imagine life without the internet. They asked those of us who'd been around for the previous century if we would go back to the way things were before. Would I? Would I give up the internet and my mobile phone? Would I surrender my laptop? Sometimes I think I would. I started writing this outdoors at my local coffee shop. Just as I was finding my groove, the woman nearby got on her phone and started talking about her family life very loudly. I would give that up. I really would. People have always talked to one another in coffee shops – but there's something about the private phone calls in public spaces that I still find jarring, even though they've been around for a couple of decades. Would I give up my phone? My text messages? My personal voice mail? To just have a clearer distinction between public and private space? I might. I really might. Welcome to episode 24 of the Wonder Junkie Podcast, featuring historian Matt Brosnan and curator at the Imperial War Museum and the new exhibition, People Power: Fighting For Peace. People Power: Fighting for Peace, is the UK’s first major exhibition to explore the evolution of the anti-war movement from the First World War to the present day. The exhibition tells the stories of individual and collective acts of anti-war protest, and the varied forms of creative expression used to campaign against war. In the exhibit, you can view rare items such as a handwritten poem by Siegfried Sassoon and original sketches for the peace symbol. Matt Brosnan, Historian, and Curator of People Power: Fighting for Peace at IWM says: “This exhibition is the first of its kind and displays a number of fascinating items which have never been exhibited before. In IWM’s Centenary year, this major exhibition continues our mission to explore war and conflict from multiple perspectives – highlighting the peace movement and its important role in British history.” Due to Matt having a limited amount of time on the opening day of the exhibit my interview with him only lasted about 10 minutes which isn’t quite long enough for a podcast in its own right. This is ok though, as it’s allowed me to get more creative with this episode and create a short audio documentary. For those of you who might remember, I used to produce The Blues Magazine Show with Big Boy Bloater on TeamRock Radio and whilst producing that show, we created a documentary called “The 21st Century Blues” which is still one of my favourite things I’ve ever done in radio and broadcast. So, I thought this would be a great opportunity to dust off my producing hat and hopefully create something really special for a subject matter that deserves all the attention it can get. My thanks to the wonderful team at the Imperial War Museum and to Matt Brosnan for making time to speak to me about the exhibit, if I could describe the exhibit in one simple way it would be; thought provoking. The exhibit is open until August 28th, 2017 and you can buy tickets online here - http://www.iwm.org.uk/exhibitions/iwm-london/fighting-for-peace Credits All audio, music and sound effects acquired legally through the Creative Commons (CC) License, Fair Use Copyright or purchased legally through a provider. Van Wilks- Austin Legend Delivers his 21st Century Blues
The Portland-based band My Brothers and I are often called “Northwest Soul” for the melodic, soulful, and danceable music influenced by pop, hip-hop, the blues, Motown, funk and soul. they The three brothers and two friends quintet initially released a digital EP, Live Sessions and have just released their debut first full-length LP, Don’t Dream Alone. They are bringing it with them for the show this Friday and we will play cuts ...a radio first. Texas-based guitarist Van Wilks has won Best Guitarist for both electric and acoustic and Best Blues-Rock Band four years running in the Austin Chronicle music poll. He is not stopping – he just released his first studio album in 10 years, 21st Century Blues, and has gigs booked almost every night until July. No wonder – when critics call 21st Century Blues the best “rock” album and it really bluesis blues and the band is compared to ZZ Top and Bad Company, you know you are in the presence of greatness on a guitar.
