Are attendances set to bounce back at the Cheltenham Festival? That is just one of the questions examined in this week's edition of The Front Page. Hopes are high that falling crowd numbers at the sport's biggest meeting could become a thing of the past after Cheltenham's New Year's Day fixture was a sellout for the first time in its history. With attendances having also risen at Kempton, Ascot, Leopardstown and elsewhere across the Christmas and new year period, the sport is enjoying a positive start to 2026. Lee Mottershead, Lewis Porteous and Scott Burton look at that recent development and also discuss Betfred's decision to so far reject a new media rights deal with a collection of British racecourses. The team debate what that means and consider a move by campaigners to persuade government that gambling advertising should be banned. In another packed edition, Lee, Lewis and Scott also salute Billy Loughnane after the young riding sensation set a major new record.

Champions Day in the city of Shanghai, November 1941. The world was at war, but the clubhouse at the Shanghai Race Club (now People's Park) was packed with owners and punters cheering on the pony. The funeral of Shanghai's richest widow, Liza Hardoon, was a spectacle that filled the streets of the International Settlement. Japanese occupiers and their Chinese collaborators came together in a bizarre ritual to celebrate the birthday of revolutionary leader Sun Yat-sen. The opening of a new movie featuring, of all subjects, Charlie Chan had folks lining up at the local cinema box office. The world had changed, but the "Lone Island" of Shanghai persisted, as it had since becoming a treaty port a century earlier. In this encore episode from 2020, historian James Carter joins us to discuss his fascinating book Champions Day: The End of Old Shanghai. Carter brings to life the vivid tableau of an era coming to an end. By the end of the year, Japanese authorities would take control of Shanghai and the city would never again be the same. What did the end of the colonial era mean for Shanghai and its residents? Why were race tracks such powerful symbols? Join us as we discuss the history of horse racing, colonialism, and the last days of Old Shanghai.

Michael Iavarone's done what most horse people only dream about, he's won the Kentucky Derby. He's been in this game at the highest level, from Big Brown taking him to the presipice of racing to many G1 wins, but he didn't grow up in it. He came from a working-class family, started out getting crushed at the betting windows, and somehow figured out how to buy the right horses at the right time. This one's full of wild stories, buying million-dollar horses days before a race, flying around the world to race in Hong Kong and Dubai, and the highs and heartbreaks that come with it. But what stuck with me most is how much Michael still loves the game. Even after all the pressure, all the wins, all the money spent, he's still out there watching morning works like it's the best part of his day. Key Topics we discussed: Why Michael only buys horses that have already raced, and how that's helped him win bigThe story behind Big Brown and how it felt to win two legs of the Triple CrownWhat it's like to wire a million dollars for a horse just days before the Breeders' CupWhy elite horses have to be mentally tough, not just talentedHow horse racing pulled him back in after he stepped awayFollow Michael on Instagram: @michael.iavaroneSubscribe and follow Horse People Podcast for more cross discipline content and stories from equestrians all around the world. @horsepeoplepodcast

The Irish Midlands flow to the relentless rhythm of the River Shannon and along its banks the Irish Stew podcasters found themselves again, Day Five of their “Off the Beaten Craic in the Hidden Heartlands” wanderings, gazing across its broad expanse from the docks of the County Offaly town of Banagher. There, cohosts John Lee and Martin Nutty met local historian James Scully and caught up with an old friend of John's, Mark Boylan, who covers horseracing for The Irish Field, to explore the history, legend, music, and all that gives life and character to this small Shannon-side community with a population aspiring to hit the 2,000 mark.James met us at the cozy, convivial Flynn's Pub on Main Street, but the craic there proved too mighty for recording purposes, so the trio beat a retreat to the hilltop Church of St Paul's for what proved to be Irish Stew's first recording in a church (but not their last as you'll hear in the final Hidden Heartlands episode).A lifelong educator and noted local historian, James set about unraveling the history of the old Irish saying, “That Beats Banagher!,” in a book of the same name which he co-wrote with Kieran Keenaghan. In this richly illustrated volume they explore the murky provenance of “That Beats Banagher!” and how it entered Irish political and cultural lore. A beguiling spinner of the town's stories, James shares tales of the earliest days of the town, the arrival of the international man of mystery from the 1600s Matthew de Renzy, the town's unexpected literary links to Anthony Trollope and Charlotte Brontë, Banagher's vibrant community life, and its status as a popular port of call for the river cruising crowd. They started the day in a pub, absolved their sins in a church, and then retreated to a pub, J.J. Hough's Singing Pub, a renowned destination for trad music fans and tourists alike run by Ger Hough, who IrishCentral called the most creative publican in Ireland. There they met David and Mark Boylan who John got to know when the Breeders' Cup flew the whole Boylan family to Kentucky so the then 14-year-old Mark could sing his Breeders' Cup song before about 80 thousand fans at Churchill Downs for the 2011 World Championship race meet. Mark may be all grown up but he hasn't outgrown his love of horses and of his hometown of Banagher which shines through in the closing segment. And in such a small, tight-knit community it was no surprise to learn that James was Mark's teacher at St Rynagh's School.Well, that beats Banagher!Next week Irish Stew hits pause on their Off the Beaten Craic series to embrace the season of giving with the story of a New York City charity rooted in the plight of the impoverished Irish immigrants in the notorious Five Points district in our conversation with Sean Granahan, president of The Floating Hospital.LinksJames ScullyBook: That Beats Banagher!Mark BoylanThe Irish FieldXInstagramFacebookHidden Heartlands Travel ResourcesIreland.comDiscover Ireland's Hidden HeartlandsIrish Stew LinksWebsiteInstagramLinkedInEpisode Details: Season 7, Episode 36; Total Episode Count: 139

Emmet Kennedy is joined by Adam Mills and Jamie Wrenn to review a fascinating weekends racing, beginning with déjà vu in the Fighting Fifth: for the third time in four starts, Constitution Hill fell again — and so did his major rival The New Lion. At 22/1, Golden Ace picked up her second Grade 1 in eight months. So the big question is this: is Constitution Hill finished… or is there a way back for Nicky Henderson's superstar? We break down the race in forensic detail, ask whether The New Lion actually enhanced his Champion Hurdle claims despite falling, and debate what the future holds for Anzadam. Then:Three Hatton's Graces. Six Grade 1s. Still only eight. Are racing fans guilty of underrating Teahupoo every single season? And what do the panel make of Ballyburn suddenly cut to 2/1 for the Stayers Hurdle? Is he really the right favourite… or was Impose Toi the more convincing long-distance prospect at Newbury? We then head to Fairyhouse: Romeo Coolio gave Gordon Elliott a tenth Drinmore, but one of the team thinks he's Gordon's next megastar – and the other two strongly disagree. Wendigo vs No Questions Asked produced a proper battle in the John Francome – but what does it mean for next steps? Jimmy Du Seuil, rated 155 over hurdles, jumped like a veteran on chase debut. But does that justify 10/1 for the Brown Advisory? Plus reaction to a huge few days on both sides of the world: Mange Tout (G3 Juvenile Hurdle) Koktail Brut (Royal Bond) Tutti Quanti (Gerry Feilden) Panic Attack (Gold Cup Handicap Chase at 16/1) And an extraordinary Japan Cup: Calandagan travels halfway around the world, beats the best of Japan, and bags a £2.3 million bonus. Adam explains why trainer Francis Graffard is a genius. Full races discussed:Fighting Fifth Hurdle (G1), Hatton's Grace (G1), Long Distance Hurdle (G2), Drinmore (G1), John Francome (G2), Beginners Chase, Juvenile Hurdle (G3), Royal Bond (G2), Gerry Feilden, Gold Cup Handicap Chase, Japan Cup (G1). The Tattersalls December Sales shape the global Thoroughbred market - and this year's renewal is one of the most important in recent memory. In this Final Furlong Tattersalls Special, Emmet Kennedy is joined by Tattersalls Associate Director of Marketing, Jason Singh, for a deep, honest, data-driven look at the market: the polarisation, the firepower, the hidden gems and the broodmares who change everything. We begin with the state of the yearling market:• why 2025 was selective but strong,• how the top end stayed fierce,• and why the middle market was deeper than many expected.Jason explains how this will feed directly into this week's breeding stock sales, and why Kentucky's intensity has already shifted buyer behaviour in Newmarket. Then we turn to the Sceptre Sessions, highlighted by:• Porta Fortuna – Cartier Champion 3YO Filly and global blue-chip broodmare prospect,• Tamfana, Barnavara, Choisya, Survie, Tiffany – an elite group rarely assembled in a single catalogue.Jason details what it takes to build a collection of this depth, and how buyers now balance residual value with the upside of producing world-class runners. From there, we dive into value mares — the bargains that became stars:• Sunset Park (60,000 gns → G2 winner),• Sultanina, Sagely, Syndicate, Tidespring, Days of Summer, Zero Gravity, Icky Woo,and how the December Sale continues to produce broodmares capable of producing Royal Ascot winners, Group 1 stars, and international champions. We also tackle the high-end market:• Immortal Verse,• Quiet Reflection,• and the seven-figure mares who shape investor confidence and global trends. Jason breaks down:• what makes a mare a hidden gem,• how data, biomechanics and conformation analytics are shifting valuations,• why smaller breeders should never fear the big stage,• and which categories are currently underrated and ripe for upside. From million-guinea superstars to 9,000gns producers of Group winners — this episode reveals why Tattersalls remains the most influential marketplace in the Thoroughbred world. If you want to understand where the industry is now and where it's going, this conversation is essential listening. It was a weekend packed with blockbuster jumps racing action at Punchestown, Ascot and Haydock, and Emmet Kennedy is joined by Grade 1–winning jockeys Lizzie Kelly and Daryl Jacob to break down every major talking point — the spectacular, the eyebrow-raising, and the genuinely confusing. We begin at Punchestown with the epic duel between Gaelic Warrior and Fact To File in the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase, where Paul Townend delivered Willie Mullins his ninth win in 12 runnings of the race. We look at how the race was run, the moves that made the difference, what to make of Fastorslow, and how the returning Gold Cup hero Inothewayurthinkin shaped up.Most importantly: Where do Mullins' stars go next? At Ascot, Arkle winner Jango Baie powered home in the 1965 Chase — but is he now a serious King Georgecontender? Speaking of Kempton: The Jukebox Man remains unbeaten over fences after a fluent prep run in the same race Bravemansgame used before winning the King George. Who does the panel want to be with for Boxing Day/St Stephen's Day? Over at Haydock, Grey Dawning continued the red-hot start to the season for Dan Skelton with a bloodless win in the Betfair Chase. The question now: is he a genuine Gold Cup player? The Morgiana Hurdle saw Lossiemouth coast home, but did we actually learn anything? The panel debate her Champion Hurdle prospects, while Wodhooh, the mare she beat in the Aintree Hurdle, made a stylish return in a Grade 2 at Ascot. We assess her ceiling for the season. Plus:• Lizzie Kelly reveals the tracks she absolutely hated riding — with one described as “absolutely awful”• Daryl Jacob defends one of those tracks as one of his favourites (!) And of course: Horses To Follow from the weekend, selected with proper insight and real-world experience.
