We're starting a new type of episode where we evaluate podcasts and kindly discuss what makes a show work and what holds it back. Today, we review The Runner's Sole by podiatrist Dr. Sharon Miller, a niche running show on foot health and injury prevention. We break down audio quality (intro music length, headset feel, warmth vs over-processing), sound effects balance, and utilize tighter hooks. Then we look at branding: clearer cover art, consistent episode art, a keyword-rich subtitle, and smarter episode titles (“Common Running Injuries” first). We touch the YouTube playbook for thumbnails, plus SEO from transcripts and stronger show notes with resource links or affiliate gear. We also share how our team built this new format, what surprised us, and why consistency on release day matters. Want your show in the spotlight? It all began with a voyage across calm seas, as we boarded the ship and searched for a paradise of our own. From there, the path rose skyward, climbing a mountain one careful step at a time until the summit finally revealed itself above the clouds. Now the journey turns in a different direction, leaving sunlight behind and slipping beneath the surface, into the shadows of the deep. The silence is thicker here, the choices more pressing, and every step takes us further into uncharted territory. THE WOLFE IS LOOSE!! Erik Wolfe, that is. I sat down with Stoll & Wolfe distillery co-owner/founder/distiller Erik Wolfe a couple weeks ago when we did an American Whiskey Master Class event there. I wanted to get his thoughts on a number of things, and as usual, I had a whole page of questions to ask.  That's not what happened. I asked my opening question, and Erik took off like a rabbit. We covered -- excuse me, he covered a lot of territory, and honestly, I found it all fascinating, so I just let the recorder roll. It's a bit longer than we usually go, but I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it. I did take the book to Baltimore shortly after that, and had an event at Sisu, a new little bar with a big personality, run by friends of mine...and maybe yours, because they've become well-known in State College and Philadelphia. I also got a great dinner in Little Italy, at Benny's, advertising "The Best Balls On The Block," and it was no hollow boast.  What I'm Drinking Today is a Stoll & Wolfe whiskey, very limited release, one barrel only of a rye whiskey made with Rosen rye and malted Rosen rye. The result was intriguing, and wonderful. The Smack Dab In The Centre segment is about pizza again; three great spots in Centre County! (More pizza because holy cow! That Original Italian Pizza episode went crazy! You loved the OIP Story!) Next episode? I have an interview with an old friend, a young old friend, who's brewing in Lititz, Pennsylvania, and I take the opportunity to profile that wonderful little town, our first Lancaster County profile. I also deliver some big news about the Seen Through A Glass holiday schedule that I think you're going to like. A lot. Be sure to listen all the way to the end, especially this time!  See you in two weeks! Until then? TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE PODCAST! Could smart sound design actually make calling a hospital a less stressful experience? And what if the sound of a cello could be scientifically mapped to our emotions? These are just some of the questions we'll be exploring today with our guest, Caitlyn Trevor. Caitlyn holds a PhD in Music Theory, a Master's in Cello Performance, and is an award-winning film score composer. As a researcher and UX professional, her work sits at that fascinating intersection of performance, science, and user experience. In our chat, we trace Caitlyn's journey from discovering the Lord of the Rings soundtrack to conducting neuroscience research in Switzerland. We'll get into the specifics of how playing music acts as a full-body exercise for the brain, and why she's applying that knowledge to improve everyday sonic experiences. We also discuss her fantastic LinkedIn series, "Sound Effects," which shows how sound can drive behaviour change. For example, one post reveals how adding a simple warning sound to an e-scooter can cut the number of times it goes unnoticed by pedestrians from a staggering 97% down to just 3%. It's a wonderful conversation packed with insight.  Show notes Connect with Caitlyn via LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/caitlyn-trevor/   The Sound Effect series on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/sonicuxr   Video Music in the tunnel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Irk1leLxfk   What is Music Cognition, video by David Heron: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R76p5B9nyPk   Show support If this podcast has sparked an idea, offered a new perspective, or provided a tool you've found useful. Thanks to a tip from Shy Bear's Jason Ufema, I got to interview John Pannizzo, the son of the man who started it all.  We get the whole story...and that's all I'm going to say. This is a good one, you should listen to it.  There's more about pizza, just because, and then some more about pizza. You won't suffer, I promise.  What I'm Drinking Today is a favorite wine, Tenuta di Ulisse Amaranta Montepulciano D'Abruzzo. It's great for Fall foods! The Smack Dab In The Centre segment is about the new Happy Valley Gravel Adventure Guide, a handy guide to riding the bike trails of Centre County! Next episode? I have a far-ranging interview with one of the most thoughtful distillers I know. We talk about heirloom grains, yeast, cornstalk rum, and Moravian pacifism. Fred Armisen on “100 Sound Effects”

The comedian Fred Armisen has a thing for sound. He's a former punk musician and a master of accents, and he is now releasing a new album of sound effects. “I was lamenting that there aren't sound-effects albums in our lives as much,” he tells Michael Schulman. “I feel like they just used to exist more or they were more present. . . . And instead of just, you know, taking out my phone and just recording stuff, I wanted to treat it properly. Like, let me go to a recording studio and really do it. Let me try to mimic some things that I've heard before.” The result, “100 Sound Effects,” comes out this month on the venerable indie label Drag City. The track titles are themselves punch lines: “Guitar Tuned but Still Somehow Out of Tune,” “Supportive Booing at a Speech,” “Obligatory Applause at a Speech,” and “Terrified Audience at an Authoritarian Nation Official Event.” Talking about the importance of paying attention to the auditory world, Armisen and Schulman went out to record some classic sounds of New York City—and what they couldn't find they faked. This segment was produced with assistance from John DeLore.
