On this episode, Charlie, Jami, and Joel discuss The Water Dancer, the debut novel by Ta-Nehisi Coates. How does memory create power? How do you define freedom, and how does the emotional savagery of selling and separating members of a family destroy and define a human being? And, most powerfully, in the midst of trauma and loss, how does one find courage and how does love survive? These ideas and more are explored in Ta-Nehisi Coates’ first novel, The Water Dancer. In partnership with RJ Julia Booksellers, this event was recorded live at the Shubert Theater in New Haven, Connecticut. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Bad news for state/church separation: the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the Bladensburg cross to be constitutional, and intolerant right-wing ideologue Tony Perkins (president of the Christian Family Research Council) has ironically been appointed to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. FFRF's full-page ad in the New York Times challenges the Christian-nationalist attack on reproductive rights. After hearing Ta Nehisi Coates' reasoned plea for reparations, we talk with author and screenwriter (Bill & Ted movies) Chris Matheson about his video "God's Art Museum" and about his upcoming book, The Buddha's Story.
Australian Legal scholar Megan Davis, American writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and South African writer Sisonke Msimang consider the bitter legacies of colonialism, which have played out across the histories of all of their countries. Host of the popular podcast It's Not A Race Beverley Wang chairs this discussion about the long-term implications of dispossession, institutionalised racism and white privilege. When journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates set out to write about police killings he went to visit Mable Jones. Back in 2000, Jones son, a friend of Coates from their time at Howard University, was shot and killed by police in Virginia. He was twenty five years old. Written in the form of a letter to his own teenage son, Coates' book "Between the World and Me" puts police shootings in a wider context. Ta-Nehisi Coates spoke as part of the Lannan Foundation's Pursuit of Cultural Freedom Series.
