From the SAG-AFTRA picket lines to the New York Times lawsuit against OpenAI, the battle over AI's role in creative industries is heating up. In this second episode of The Dynamist's series on AI and copyright, we dive into the messy reality of how artists, creators, and tech companies are navigating this rapidly evolving landscape. Our guests bring unique perspectives to this complex debate: Mike Masnick, CEO of Techdirt, who's been chronicling the intersection of tech and copyright for decades; Alex Winter, the filmmaker and actor known for Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, who offers boots-on-the-ground insight from his involvement in recent Hollywood labor negotiations; and Tim Hwang, Senior Fellow at FAI, who explores how current legal battles could shape AI's future. The conversation covers everything from "shakedown" licensing deals between AI companies and media outlets to existential questions about artistic value in an AI age. While the guests acknowledge valid concerns about worker protection and fair compensation, they challenge the notion that restricting AI development through copyright law is either practical or beneficial. Drawing parallels to past technological disruptions like Napster, they explore how industries might adapt rather than resist change while still protecting creators' interests.

Happy New Year! Shoot off the fireworks, toot the noisemakers, and make yourself a nice plate of black-eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread. Do you have any resolutions this year? A word or mantra for the year? No? Well, you're in luck. We're here to help with that by way of four movie recommendations. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)First up is the 1986 John Hughes comedy classic, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The real righteous dudes in the audience will know why this film has a great movie mantra, but if you don't, you're in luck! We'll tell you all about it in today's show. Galaxy Quest (1999)Next is the 1999 love letter to Star Trek, Galaxy Quest. This comedy is a wonderful send-up of classic Star Trek, but is also a fascinating meta-commentary on stardom, fandom, and geek culture. By Grabthar's Hammer, you best pick this one up for another fantastic movie mantra. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)Frank Capra's 1946 film, It's a Wonderful Life, is a timeless Christmas classic, but it's got one of the best movie mantras in history. Starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Henry Travers, and Lionel Barrymore, this drama still rings true today and is worth watching as we start the new year. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)We close our movie mantras this week with another comedy, 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. While yes, the tagline reads, “History's about to be rewritten by two guys who can't spell,” this is a comedy that still writes a wonderful movie mantra. Filled with cameos from comedians, rock stars, and more, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is a delightful sci-fi comedy. Strange things will be afoot at the Video Store if you don't pick this one up. From all of us here at the Video Store Podcast, we hope your new year is a great one. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. As Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl get set for Episode 600, the Deucecast Movie Show is releasing a series of "milestone" episodes, including the first ReFlicktions ep (#130) last week, and this week, Episode 300.    Aside from the RetroZap Podcasting Network bumper being taken off the front, and the stinger added to the end, the episode itself is here in it's entirety, as it was released on October 25th, 2017. Here are the original notes (and the original post):  After many years and many late nights, Mikey, Pinky and Dave ring in the 300th episode of The Deucecast Movie Show.  First, the guys say hello to Producer Shawn and Lady Pinky (and then bye, as they leave quickly), and invite in Friend of the Show Wit Stillman Fan, Film Historian, Terrance Malick Apologist, Brie Fan (Allison, Larsen & Cheese) and World Renowned Proctimologist Dr Earl... And then, the Cavalcade of Stars begins! Shazbazzar, co-host of the TechnoRetro Dads podcast, joins the crew with some of his favorite films, including the original animated Lord of the Rings film, WarGames and the dangerous, unaccountable teenagers from the 1980s.  Plus, the first ever mention of "Rock & Rule". When Remodeling Clay finally gets on the line, the gang plays an old school game of "Reel or Unreel", aka, "Faux or Show".  Plus an update on Clay's favorite films and a few documentary recommendations that we all have to see. The Retrozap dot com Podcasting Network Podfather Retro Joe then comes on to discuss some of his favorite films, including Army of Darkness, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, and Ghostbusters.  Plus a discussion on Patriots Day, which took place around Joe's neck of the woods.  And with Retro Joe, a great round of Box Office Mojo on "Third Films in a Series". To wrap up the Cavalcade of Stars, Jennifer Kaufman brings up some of her favorites she's seen this year, with Spotlight, A Fish Called Wanda and more. Pinky then riffs on an assigned film, "Audition", one of those "Most disturbing movies ever made!"  More crap on Superman III and then, a throwback to an early sponsor of the show, Real Men of Genius. To you, the listener and film fan, thanks so much for downloading, listening, and being a fan!

What is The Matrix? To some, it's a simulation we live in covering up a reality of control and deception. To others, it's a 1999 movie where a guy in sunglasses named Larry gives one of the dudes from "Bill & Ted" some pills. Could very well be Gas-X and a Tylenol. Either way, the iconography is undeniable and ripe for videogame inspiration. What if Link took a pill from Zelda? How would Crash Bandicoot look during bullet time? On today's reloaded episode we talk the sci-fi classic, what videogame worlds we'd take a pill for and even some times we defied the laws of physics. So free your mind, neophytes and follow us to see just how deep the rabbit hole goes!

SURPRISE!No-one knew this one was coming. Not the Patrons, and no-one on social media. This week was going to have no episode, but I really wanted to do an episode on the crazy story behind Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, and how a sequel this wacky and ambitious ever got made in the first place. A sequel that references Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal, as well as containing evil robot versions of Bill & Ted, and the characters dying and ending up in hell. It's a lot more fun than the sequel was going to be, that's for certain!Just a small episode, but a most non-heinous one. Episode 220: The history and legacy of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure almost wasn't so excellent. Its original plot had to be changed during shooting, a major role was left uncast until the last minute, its original ending was abandoned for being, honestly, most heinous, and its production company went bankrupt during post-production.But, just like the movie, its ending was most triumphant. Bill and Ted would pass their history report, form Wyld Stallyns, and their music would create utopia on Earth. The movie would become cemented in 80s comedy, for not being totally bogus and giving us two of cinema's most bodacious heroes, as well as two sequels. Not to mention, it invented the internet (sort of!) and highlights the power of non-traditional scholastic education.Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes!I would love to hear your thoughts on Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure !CONTACT....
