Bill & Ted creators Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson, along with stars Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves, always assumed Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey would be the last time anyone would see Bill S. Preston Esquire and Ted Theodore Logan together on the big screen ever again.Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey hadn't done the business of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, and so all four men went their own ways in Hollywood, each carving their own successful careers. It wasn't until a random red carpet comment in 2005 that any of them thought seriously about reviving the characters, and not until 2008 that they got together at a BBQ to discuss ideas. And they ended up having a great idea, one they all wanted to do, but it meant writing a spec script, without having any of the rights in place to get this legacy sequel actually made. And then they found out MGM was planning their own reboot called Bill & Ted's Friggin' Badass Voyage...I would love to hear your thoughts on Bill & Ted Face the Music !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! Imagine pitching this to a movie studio in the 80s: two clueless slackers travel through time in a phone booth, rounding up historical figures for their high school history project. Not exactly an easy sell, right? But what started as a quirky stand-up routine from college pals Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon turned into a surprise hit. The film didn't just make money—it inspired a sequel, an animated series, a comic book, and even its own breakfast cereal! After a challenging production—complete with budget issues, a rewritten ending, and hundreds of auditions—Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure finally hit theaters. While initial reviews were most heinous, it steadily won over audiences, and the rest is, well, history. So, jump into the time-traveling phone booth, practice your air guitar skills, and don't forget to wind your watch as Nicholas Pepin, Chad Sheppard, Laramy Wells, and I discuss Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure from 1989 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: Many of the historical figures that Bill and Ted brought back died in tragic ways. Several, including Socrates, Joan of Arc, Billy the Kid, and Abraham Lincoln, were either executed or assassinated. Sigmund Freud died by assisted suicide. Some people believe Napoleon Bonaparte's death under house arrest was the result of arsenic poisoning. Historically, Genghis Khan and Ludwig van Beethoven died of natural causes. Bill's "philosophy" to Socrates, "All we are is dust in the wind, dude," is a line from "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas. Socrates' response is, "Like sands of the hourglass, such are the days of our lives." For decades, that was the opening credits voiceover for "Days of Our Lives". Amy Stoch (Missy) appeared in 26 episodes of Days of Our Lives in 1986, while Tony Steedman (Socrates) appeared in 15 episodes in 1990. Ed Solomon began his career in college as a joke writer, stand-up comedian, and playwright. While still in college, he was a staff writer for Laverne & Shirley – making him (at the time) the youngest member of the Writers Guild of America. He then spent three years writing the cult Showtime TV series, It's Garry Shandling's Show, before venturing into feature films in the 1980s. He helped create and co-write the critically acclaimed comedies Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (with Chris Matheson). Solomon also worked on a number of hit franchise films, including Men in Black, Charlie's Angels, and then writing the Now You See Me films. Solomon worked on an early version of a Universal The Invisible Man remake, with Johnny Depp. In March 2016 he completed production on Mosaic, a 12-hour long-form TV project for HBO in collaboration with director Steven Soderbergh, This production would mark the first in a series of collaborations with Soderbergh, including the neo-noir film No Sudden Move in 2021, and more recently, the crime series Full Circle, which premiered July 13, 2023. @ed_solomon twitter.com/ed_solomon https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004412/ Connect with your host Kaia Alexander: https://entertainmentbusinessleague.com/ https://twitter.com/thisiskaia  Produced by Stuart W. On today's episode, we're heading over to the Battle of the Bands to try and save the world, but before that, we have to make a little pit stop over to both Heaven and Hell, while we revisit the absolutely excellent buddy comedy classic, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991). This movie was directed by Pete Hewitt and co-written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. This movie stars Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix), Alex Winter (Death Wish 3, Grand Piano), William Sadler (The Shawshank Redemption, Die Hard 2), Joss Ackland (Watership Down, Lethal Weapon 2), Pam Grier (Jawbreaker, Bones), and George Carlin (Carwash, Dogma). This movie is such a departure from the first film (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure), but I think it's a great sequel in its own right, and it has a certain visual style and edge to it, that really makes it set apart from movies in a similar vein. I recommend checking it out to see how warped this story gets and seeing these actors having such a fun time making the film. This movie was co-written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon and directed by Stephen Herek. This movie stars Keanu Reeves (The Matrix, My Own Private Idaho), Alex Winter (The Lost Boys, Freaked), George Carlin (The Prince of Tides, Outrageous Fortune), and Robert V. Barron (Night Court, Eating Raoul). We also have a bunch of other appearances from folks like Al Leong (Lethal Weapon, Die Hard), Jane Wieldlin (Clue, Mission Hill), Dan Shor (Tron, Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College), and Tony Steedman (Scrooged, The Golden Girls). This movie is absolutely a gem, and if you haven't seen it already, you should change that!!! This is a silly buddy comedy on the surface, but I also think has some good messages tucked in there, as well. This week on On Story we’ll hear from Ed Solomon, the screenwriter behind Men in Black and the co-writer of the Bill & Ted series. Solomon has had a major film released in each of the last 5 decades starting in 1989 with his first feature Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, which he co-wrote with Chris Matheson. That film has spawned 2 sequels, both written by Solomon and Matheson, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, and 2020’s Bill & Ted Face the Music. Solomon wrote Men in Black, Now You See Me, and HBO’s interactive series Mosaic. I spoke with Solomon about his writing and the process behind deciding which ideas to pursue at the 2020 Austin Film Festival.

[School of Movies 2021] We got some real love for our Excellent Adventure show. It seems like you folks were responding to the pure joy threaded throughout, so let's see what we can do for the black sheep of the B&T Trilogy. This sequel turned up just two years after the first, having been hastily greenlit when executives got dollar signs in their eyes and saw franchise potential. The writers began with a re-tread of the original, where the duo went through great works of literature and dragged out the characters for yet another school report. Then when they got to Moses and company from religious texts, it was decided this should get more metaphysical. So it became "Bill & Ted Go to Hell" and the rest of the film was written around how that could have happened. Who killed them? Why a pair of evil, robot doubles from the future!  It did not delight audiences. But as we delve deeper than even Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson could have predicted we would like to present to you, some of the reasons why this movie is actually not Bogus at all. It's barely a franchise. The original came from the studio with Dino De Laurentis's name on it. It's been 28 years since its previous entry. So why the hell are we doing the movies of Bill and Ted, two movie doofuses who until this year, had made two movies that made decent money, but nothing worth writing home about. But despite all odds, this year has brought us a brand new entry entitled Bill & Ted Face The Music. Do I have to reiterate how crazy a year 2020 has been? Now we've done franchises that waited awhile between sequels in the past. But a span of twenty-nine years, the amount of time between Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and this year's Bill & Ted Face The Music, is far and away the Aftertaste record for the number of years between films. So what made Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves finally come back to the roles that launched their careers? And is the film's story, once again concocted by original writers Ed Soloman and Chris Matheson, worthy of the long wait? Join Alyx, Jack, and myself as we answer these questions and more. And be sure to stay until the end, as Jack makes a bizarre proposition for a condition connected to a possible future retrospective. The Fly (1986) d. David Cronenberg Starring: Jeff Goldblum Geena Davis John Getz  This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan enter the telepod together and come out as a new, single entity — the Brundlehost. They get sentimental revisiting the powerful tragedy of David Cronenberg's The Fly, and Ryan acts like he's the first person to ever notice that Geena Davis is one of the great beauties of our time, and Steve tries to break down particle physics and quantum mechanics so even a dumb Philistine like Ryan can understand it. When scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) completes his teleportation device, he decides to test its abilities on himself. Initially, Brundle appears to have undergone a successful teleportation, but the fly's cells begin to take over his body. In this episode, Bo Bennett speaks with writer Chris Matheson about his book, "The Story of God: A Biblical Comedy about Love (and Hate)." From Amazon.com: The Bible offers some clues to God's personality—he's alternately been called vindictive and just, bloodthirsty and caring, all-powerful and impotent, capricious and foresighted, and loving and hateful. But no one has ever fully explored why God might be such a figure of contrasts. Nor has anyone ever satisfactorily explained what guides his relationship not just with angels, the devil, and his son, but also with all of creation. Might he be completely misunderstood, a mystery even to himself? Might his behavior and actions toward humankind tell us much more about him than it does about us? Enter the mind of the creator of the universe, travel with him through the heavenly highs and hellish lows of his story, from Genesis to Revelation, to better understand his burdensome journey: being God isn't easy. After hearing his story—at times troubling and tragic but always hilarious in its absurdity and divine in its comedy—you'll never look at a miracle or catastrophe—or at our place in the universe, or God's—the same way again.
