More brutality, perhaps a few war crimes, and yes, even that isn't off the table now that Vlad feels cornered. You know Russia's preoccupied when they can't maintain their fake "grassroots" movements in the US anymore. Facebook and Twitter pulled their anti-Ukrainian disinformation accounts. People have spotted that Russian fake anti-Ukrainians are in fact fake people. The real anti-Ukrainians are at their borders, hassling and assaulting African and Indian students. Donald Trump senses that this is the time to take credit for everything. Joan McCarter recalls how it really went down. Ukraine is top of the to-do list for Congress, who now regrets putting off all their other chores to this week too. Ketanji Brown Jackson has been selected by Joe Biden to fill a Supreme Court seat, so expect to be sickened by the usual GQP Senators. Louis DeJoy spent $6 billion on 6 mpg delivery trucks and laughs himself to sleep each night. On February 26, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak formally proposed legislation that would authorize Techno-Governments. The legislation would allow companies working in innovative areas such as blockchain, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, etc., to be granted the authority of a County Government for tracts of virgin land greater than 50,000 acres. This would mean big tech companies can establish smart cities from the ground up, and control judicial, educational, police and other county level governing authorities. Only twice in recent history, has Las Vegas seen a so-called "shutdown" of the famed Vegas Strip. In November 1963, casinos closed their doors for a National Day of Mourning following the assassination of then-US President John F. Kennedy.  That closure lasted about 17 hours and even then, only a few casinos took part with several just shutting down their gaming areas for the duration of the funeral - about 3 hours. The next shutdown would happen 57 years later...and last much MUCH longer. Due to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak issued a directive ordering a month-long closure of all non-essential businesses as well as a freeze on all gaming & gambling, effective March 18, 2020.  This essentially brought Las Vegas to a screeching halt. Originally slated to last 30 days, the total shutdown lasted almost 90 days. To say the effects of the closure were "devastating" for the people who live & work in Las Vegas would be the understatement of the century.  And, due to ongoing restrictions & limitations, the effects are still being felt to this day - almost 10 months later. Joining me for this episode of the podcast is C. Lucia Starbuck spoke with Craig Madole with the Nevada Chapter of the Associated General Contractors. Lastly, Lucia has been investigating the COVID-19 outbreak at Arbors Memory Care in Sparks. Six staff members and 32 residents tested positive for COVID-19, and three residents died. Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve is echoing Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak's directive this week ordering people to stay at home. It's the only way, they said, to reduce the impact of COVID19. We hear from both of them about what's being done in the Silver State to deal with COVID-19.Also: The news media, particularly small, independent outlets, are suffering as a result of COVID-19. The Reno News & Review recently announced it was ending publication after decades of printing its weekly in Northern Nevada. The problem with news outlets going out of business is that when people need information, they frequently turn to news sources. District health officer Kevin Dick refused to answer questions from a Reno Gazette-Journal reporter. "This is not the time to try to find loopholes."Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak said the picture is grim but hopeful as the Silver State deals with fallout from COVID-19. Here in Reno, we've seen restaurants, bars and casinos shuttered. Now, the governor is saying that if a business is not essential, it may face criminal penalties if it does not immediately close. The impacts to businesses facing closure remains to be seen. What is clear is that with increasingly vacant buildings, law enforcement has stepped up patrols. Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam spoke a press conference and said law enforcement is stepping up patrols.
