In 2016, at the Wembly Arena, Nick Blackwell and Eubank Jr met for a boxing match. Both boxers were breathing heavily. For every punch that Eubank made, Blackwell tried to hit back. Eubank was clearly winning…No matter how hard Eubank hit Blackwell, Blackwell always came back for more. He was the embodiment of resilience, no matter how much pressure he was under, he stood there and took it and did his best to fight back. That is, until the referee stopped the match in the 10th round.A closed left eye and blood coming from his nose - the boxer, Nick Blackwell was finally taken to hospital on a stretcher while receiving oxygen. It's the same in life and in business. A person or team can only tolerate stress for so long until that final punch gets them...Resilience will eventually turn into fragility.
One of our best and most emotional interviews to date. This week we spoke with Nick Blackwell. An amazing man with an amazing story who gave everything to the sport of boxing. We cover his tragic injury, his recovery and also his boxing career that was cut short. Nick doesn’t give many interviews so this is one not to miss! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
As a trainer, Gary Lockett endured a brutal six-month period. Firstly, his charge Nick Blackwell was left fighting for his life following a hard-fought battle against Chris Eubank Jnr. Then, months later, Lockett was in the 'winning' corner when his boxer, Dale Evans was victorious against Mike Towell, who did not survive his injuries from the fight. It was a horrible spell and firmly tested Lockett's resolve and his passion for the sport, one that was dampened as a fighter in a career that saw him make his name with a violent left hook called 'Lockett's Rocket.' Trained by the likes of Brian Hughes and Enzo Calzaghe, Lockett is a raft of boxing wisdom and talks in colour about boxing politics and his own 12-year career which culminated in a unified middleweight championship to and in-form Kelly Pavlik. But by then, Lockett knew his time had come.
Nikesh Shukla continues his series of interviews on boxing. The level of violence and serious injury has always called the sport into question. Just last year it saw the tragic death of Mike Towell after a fatal head injury and Nick Blackwell retired after a bleed on the brain. These stories are familiar to Kieran Farrell, who discovered a love of boxing aged just 7, and who had 26 fights in a row unbeaten - 14 as a professional. But then he collapsed from a bleed on the brain after a fight against Anthony Crolla. Despite 30% brain damage he was desperate to fight again, but was forced to retire aged 22. Four years on he runs a gym and acts as coach and promoter. He tells Nikesh what attracts a child to the sport, what that night took from him and why he's still happy to encourage children and adults to put on the gloves. Produced in Bristol by Anne-Marie Bullock.
Many a fighter has quit, it is not a new thing, and we have no problem with it as fighter safety is paramount. However, the manor in which a fighter quits matters. Deciding not to give your all when the odds are heavily stacked against you taints the relationship between fighter and fan. Can Nicholas Walters come back from his Vegas embarrassment? We discuss this, Terry Flanagan, Nick Blackwell and Haye v Bellew on episode 55! Ed Draper is joined by Spencer Fearon and Nick Blackwell to reflect on Muhammad Ali’s sad passing. There are also exclusive interviews from Bob Mee and Audley Harrison.
In March British boxer Nick Blackwell almost died after a bout with Chris Eubank junior. HARDtalk's Stephen Sackur speaks to Chris Eubank senior who now manages his son.

.The song I have sent you this week is one of my many local songs about the wonderful area in which I live…which you know well…so you will be able to visualise what I am singing about…it is simply called “If” and points out what you are missing if you aint been there. It’s a track from one of my DVDs so there are pictures to go with it….I think you will enjoy the lyrics. 2.The news this week is about major tax dodgers and our wonderful P.M. has been dragged into it…and totally denies any wrongdoing. What makes me laugh is all this is treated as something NEW….wow!!...all these billionaires don’t give a monkeys about us…now there’s a surprise!!….the problems of the world could be solved by half a dozen of these greedy selfish you-know-whats…wheels within wheels…simple as that…they all look after each other and throw the odd crumb to us lot. 3.On the sporting scene it was good to hear that Nick Blackwell is recovering from his fight with Chris Eubank Junior.I saw the fight which should have been stopped a lot earlier…I feel the problem was they were holding out that Blackwell was “indestructible” which is never the case…I feel sorry for Eubank who was obviously upset… And those big hard tough rugby players are in the news…one of them called another “Gypsy Boy”…OOOOH MATRON……screams of “RACIST”…so now the nanny state has expanded into rugby…they’ll be providing the front row of the scrum with handbags next…it’s pathetic. 4.On the showbiz front I thought we were going to have a break from Ant and Dec now their Saturday show has finished…no chance…they are straight back on Britains Got Talent (which definitely does not apply to them)….perhaps instead of “Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway”….they could have a new programme “Takeaway Ant & Dec”. And The Rolling Stones have got an exhibition of their life on the road…the amazing thing is they have never changed…perhaps it’s because they always looked like they were in their seventies…you gotta love ‘em though….it’s only rock and roll but we love it. 5.Recently received a leaflet through my door extolling the virtues of remaining in the EU…..then I watch the news…and apparently EVERYONE has had one….to the cost of 7.5 million pounds. Is it me or are they having a laugh…if it was April 1st I would understand…..so 7.5 million pounds on paper that most people will throw in the bin….come back Henry the 8th and throw the lot of them in the Tower!!! On a bright note to finish… The Cheshire Cats are about to present a nice cheque to the Claire House Hospice on Wirral….who NEED the money to care for sick kids…money raised by our weekly jam sessions where local musicians give their time FREE….nice to work amongst decent folk….check out our website www.thecheshirecats.co.uk

We discuss - albeit belatedly - the Eubank Jr Blackwell fight and subsequent situation. We talk about the IBF title battle coming up between Charles Martin and Anthony Joshua and it's packed undercard - kind of. And finally talk about Martin's white collar boxing match coming up next Sunday, all in the name of charity!
The new Major League Baseball season starts this weekend set against the back drop of a new era in relations between Cuba and the USA. The sport has always played a significant role politically between the two counties, not least back in the 1960s for a young man from Maryland, USA at the start of his sporting career. Tom Brown is one of very few people who have played professional football, he won two Super Bowls, and Major League baseball! He's also unique in being the only man picked to play by the President! Women’s Footballs Greatest Fight: We hear from former England star Anita Asante, one of the black players representing Swedish side Rosengrad, who were subject to alleged racist abuse from fans as they played away to Frankfurt in the Women’s Champions League. Referee-ndum: We look at how football might have a bearing on the way people vote in the upcoming EU referendum, and on how that result could in turn potentially change football in Britain. On Thin Ice: We’re at the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston looking at how an athlete chooses their music and hear about some of the more unusual choices! Boxing Clever: We look at the events surrounding the recent Nick Blackwell fight which left the middleweight in an induced coma, but just how dangerous is boxing? We uncover some surprising facts about the world’s most dangerous sports. Sporting Witness… heads back to 1992 when American sprinter Gail Devers was the surprise winner of the women's 100 metres at the Olympic Games. An incredible feat in anyone's books, but made all the more remarkable because Gail had only just recovered from a rare disease which nearly led to her feet being amputated. Episode 3: Nick Blackwell woke from a coma a week after collapsing
Hey. It's been a while, but remember us? Okay, it's only been weeks. But Top Men Boxing Radio is back! Maybe there wasn't a ton of great stuff while we were gone, but there was indeed boxing that deserved some discussion. On HBO last weekend, Andre Ward scored a decision win over Sullivan Barrera, marking his first bout since mid-2015. And on the undercard 2012 Olympian Joseph Diaz, Jr. remained unbeaten after defeating Jayson Velez. In Yorkshire and on Sky Sports, Kell Brook returned to the ring to make quick work of Kevin Bizier. Over in London, Chris Eubank, Jr. stopped Nick Blackwell in 10 rounds. Unfortunately Blackwell remains in a coma. TMBR's regards and well wishes to Blackwell. Coming up this Friday on Spike TV, Adriend Broner faces Ashley Theophane, while Sky Sports hosts Callum Smith vs Hadillah Mohoumadi on Sky Sports Saturday. No guests this week, people. It's a solo mission by The Fight City's Patrick Connor.
