An interview with Texas-born defender Jonathan Tomkinson on how he came to be a professional footballer in his father's homeland of England. Lots of ground covered including a take on the differences in football (soccer) culture between the UK and US and the importance of a "if you don't ask, you don't get" attitude. Harry Bates is a Worcester-based Personal Trainer. He runs The Movement Company with three tiers of engagement: a free run club, group circuits and bespoke one-to-one sessions at his private studio. In this we discuss:** For sedentary people why ditching data, wearables, smart watches and SMART goals and just moving could be the key. ** Why combining fitness with community/socialising maximises the benefits of working out.** Why people realising exercise makes them 'feel better' could be the key to getting the population healthier, in body and mind. ** Harry's pivot from Primary School teacher to fitness pro.** The difficult of knowing what career to follow for young people and why often the unsure choose teaching as a safe option. ** The challenge for PTS of fitting in their own training when busy with clients. ** Levels of kids movement in primary schools. Luke Harvey was an elite jump jockey winning races at the famous Cheltenham Festival and Aintree among other successes. Since retiring he's become a beloved racing broadcaster for ITV, Sky Sports and others. In this conversation Luke tells me why he thinks the 2026 edition was the best 'Cheltenham' in decades. In a time when we're also considering the healthiness of much of elite sport - jump jockeys have a lot of financial uncertainty to contend with and physical jeopardy - Luke explains why he's forever grateful for the like horse racing has given him. Also an interesting riff here on the enigmatic nature of both humans and horses - how people and race horses can be brilliant in training but not able to perform in public.

My brother, Dr Max Draper was in a dark place six or seven years ago. Physically and mentally he was as low as you can go. At his nadir he felt like he didn't want to be here anymore.Remembering that time is painful for me and everyone else who loves Max. But there's a huge tale of hope that sprung from that low and it's in his rise back to health that Max charts in his book Testosterone Decoded. Max, then a GP in the North East of England had his health and T levels battered by a triple header of testicular cancer, meningitis and chronic stress. For a long time he didn't twig about the testosterone. When he did start testosterone replacement therapy his rise from the deepest doldrums was remarkably swift. In this story then there's a beacon of optimism for other men brought to their knees because of hormonal imbalance. I'm biased but I think Max's book is a brilliant breakdown of what testosterone is, what it gives men, what healthy levels should be and the options to get heathy again. There's also a frank look at TRT's downsides, including fertility issues and how potentially to mitigate those. It's a book that has enough science to educate medical practitioners and health professionals. But it is written in a simple and punchy way that won't lose the lay man. I'm proud of my bro for battling back from bleak ill health, for having the wherewithal to pivot careers, from General Practice into TRT specialist, whilst being a top dad to three young children. Kudos to his wife, Dr Katy Draper for her part in supporting this transformation too. I hope you enjoy the chat and I'd really appreciate you considering to buy this book. Legend is perhaps an overused word in modern sport. But Lewis Ludlow would be considered a Gloucester Rugby legend in any era.'Luds' has captained the club for much of his time - more than a decade - wearing the famous cherry & white colours and is on track to break Gloucester's appearance record in the nearish future. He also captained England on his debut, underscoring his innate ability to lead. In this conversation we discuss:** Physical longevity - sauna, ice baths and diet** Lewis' 10 operations and why he has no regrets for the physical toll of the game on his body.** His pride and gratitude at representing Gloucester** How his mindset is behind his success rather than physical gifts** Favourite movie motivational speeches ** Hopes to work at Gloucester beyond his playing days *******************Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-streetInfo on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at - https://www.herringshoes.co.ukFor 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing: Check out the intro to the podcast. For a 10% discount with GHS Cheltenham Clinics' Health Checks - https://ghsclinics.health, contact me: teddy@drapermedia.co.uk

Have you noticed how one health topic is all the rage on the internet one week only to be replaced by another next week? That's why it was powerful to get Katie outline why the focus on protein isn't a fad - but a vital message for good health. I met Simon Mundie when we were both ambitious young men living in London in our 20s pursuing careers in sports broadcasting. I was presenting the sport news on the Breakfast Show at Absolute Radio and Simon was playing the same role on Drive Time.Simon has gone onto work for BBC radio and TV, but his thoughtful and insightful approach to sport and life began to articulate with his very popular podcast Don't Tell Me The Score. He now works as a coach and explains his service in these terms: ‘I work from a place of deep presence and focus on helping you clear the blockages that stop you from experiencing the clarity, joy and love that is your essence.'This may sound a bit woo to some. But I love the idea of sporting flow applied to everyday life, the quest to live in the moment as much as possible. As someone who often thinks about the past and the future, past frustrations set against thinking about upcoming diary commitments, I've struggled with this.Sport for me has always been a way of returning to the moment, but this conversation prompted me to wonder could we view life as sport - centring on trying to execute as well as possible and be present. This idea of absorption in the moment is included in the theory behind The Triple Tonic workouts I do with clients - yes, we do weights etc, but there's a lot of balls and rackets involved to keep the people I work with in the moment.Let me know your thoughts on the ideas we discussed here.

This week I caught up with Cheltenham only's current professional boxer Louis Bacon to look ahead to a significant night in his fledgling career. On March 28th at GL1 Leisure Centre in Gloucester Louis, who's 23, steps up to six rounds for the first time. He'd previously only boxed 4 round contests in the pro ranks. Louis is also moving up in weight to 168 pounds (12 stone) or super-middleweight in light of the contest having a same-day weigh-in. Louis tells us about the physical challenges of working as a landscape gardener alongside his fight camp training, the financial outlay he has had over medical checks and licensing and the brass tacks business aspect of the the fight game - including delivering tickets by hand.I found this a fascinating insight into the life of someone making their way in the early stages of pro boxing and all the factors involved. At the time of recording Louis had a cold and we talked about the discipline of sometimes stepping off the gas when the body needs to recover. I'm planning to follow Gloucester Rugby March 28th at Villa Park in the Slater Cup, but I intend to try and get back in time to watch Louis box.

A compelling and very honest conversation with Gloucester (and England international) winger Ollie Thorley about how his life changed with his family's decision to leave London and move to Cheltenham as a small boy. Without that sliding-doors decision, Ollie thinks he may never have even played regular rugby - let alone become a pro and a Gloucester legend. We talk about Ollie's passion for swimming and how his innate physicality as a boy - size, speed and strength - meant some of his rugby skills were underdeveloped. It was too easy for him to outmuscle and outpace boyhood opponents so his handling, positioning and skillset was counterintuitively stunted. We also discuss Ollie's love of his school days at Cheltenham College but how the attention on him as rugby star and Deputy Head Boy was something he found difficult. He was also wrestling with a stammer at the time (which he's clearly overcome).Very honest and two-way conversation with Ollie asking me about my background and what would be my dream sports broadcasting gig.

Cheltenham Town's free-scoring midfielder Issac Hutchinson is actually a Bristol Rovers player. He's on loan at Cheltenham and travels up the M5 for training. But at 25 this is the 7th club he's played for as a professional footballer. In fact, Bristol took recalled him in January only to allow him to return to Cheltenham at the end of the month. Isaac's others clubs thus far: Southend United, Derby County, Forest Green Rovers, Crawley Town and Walsall. Where he's stayed for a while, Hutchinson has done well, but his story is typical of League and League 2 football - constant change and movement. In this conversation we talk about the challenge of a nomadic lifestyle, the lapsed friendships and the commitment required from Isaac's partner who has followed him around the country. We also discuss the skill of gelling quickly with new teammates on and off the pitch.Isaac was a big fan of Chelsea's all-time leading scorer Frank Lampard growing up and we talk about the importance of repetitive practice to hone those runs and finishes from midfield. I enjoyed this. I hope you do too. Being a pro player sounds very glamorous. But I have huge admiration for these guys' abilities to adapt to new environments amid such flux.

Andy Brassington is in his 70s. But you'd never guess it. He came around to my house before Christmas for a coffee and a long chat. He left me feeling invigorated, hopeful and enthused. For what I'm trying to do with the podcast and with my Triple Tonic workouts, for sure. But, also just generally excited for life and reassured there are philanthropists like Andy who are out there trying to connect people. Andy's a former cricketer. A wicketkeeper for a decade and a half at Gloucestershire. As it became clear a generational talent called Jack Russell had curtailed his playing opportunities, Brassy transitioned into a role as marketing manager at the club.He went onto found his sports hospitality business Finders and Keepers in the late 90s and it's still going strong: https://www.finderskeepersuk.comMaybe from his sporting background, or his business experience or maybe just how he's made, but Andy has a keen awareness of the importance of conversation and connection. And during the Covid pandemic he founded the charity Walkers and Talkers. These are FREE events - initially based at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club but now taking place across the country - which hosts talks from (unpaid) celebrities while encouraging people to talk and walk alongside each other. Again, I don't know many people who could pull this all off at 21. Let alone 71. But Andy is an inspiring ball of energy. And his mission to connect people, reflected in his opinion that an email is only of value after a face-to-face conversation, or worst case a phone call, is powerful. At a time of increasing loneliness and technology-induced disconnection, this is an important public health message too. I hope you enjoy this. And maybe you'll be moved to make a call off the back of it? To contact Andy, you can email: andy@finderskeepersuk.com

I'm half-Welsh. My dad hails from cwmbran. And so presenting on Sky Sports News as Wales wound their way in magical fashion to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 is a treasured memory. A special summer - counterbalanced by the fact that I'm half-English and Wayne's Rooney's Three Lions were dumped out by Iceland in ignominious fashion. Ouch. That still hurts. But it was also a special time for the country Wales knocked out in the last-16 stage: Northern Ireland. It was their first and only, to date, time at The European Championship. Paul Gilmour was a firsthand bystander to the squad's exploits in qualifying and then in the tournament itself in France. He was the dedicated team reporter for Sky Sports News. It would have been a memorable assignment for any football person. But particularly poignant for Paul who hails from Northern Ireland. He wasn't born when his country qualified for the 1958 and 1982 World Cups. He was barely born when they made the World Cup in Mexico in 86. But in 2016 he was front and centre to cover a joyous time for his country. The team won only one of four games played in the tournament but made indelible memories, particularly the cacophonous singing of ‘Will Grigg is on fire!” Even though Grigg didn't get on the pitch during Euro 2016! It's a classic old school soccer story. But a very human one too. Dr Mark Draper ( my dad) is a GP in Gloucestershire and a micro-nutritionist who has run courses for other doctors and medical professionals focussed on the vitamins and minerals we need to be healthy. Here he explains how his interest and passion for vitamins and minerals was sparked when working as a doctor in the Turks and Caicos islands - he and his colleagues found huge improvements in the island children's health after iron tablets were handed out at schools. I don't know about you, but I don't really struggle to do health-related things like exercising and eating vegetables. But I've founding sleeping well on a regular basis to be a bit of a challenge. Shift work as a sports broadcaster - 2am get-ups in the same week as 2am bedtimes - hasn't helped. But fundamentally sleeping is the anti-do: relaxation isn't something you can force through with discipline or the ability to form behavioural habits. And the more you think or worry about sleep - or document it with technology - the harder it can seem to actually relax enough to nod off. We now live in a world where we're being bombarded with information about how important sleep is to our short-term daily performance and chances of long-term good health. This can be anxiety-inducing and counterproductive to sleep! In this context, I found restorative sleep coach Holly Hannigan-Mills' approach to helping people get good kip very refreshing and very useful. Holly has been helping people sleep for nearly 10 years. Taking away that jeopardy and sense of doom seems to be key and adopting a general acceptance that we won't always get a good night's sleep - but we'll be all right - is a cathartic attitude shift. The conversation also includes some very practical tips about how to create a restful feeling in the evening - including getting daylight in the morning. Plus we do talk about how to navigate sleep patterns when you're doing variable shift patterns.I met Holly when undertaking the Second Prime health assessment at GHS Clinics - https://ghsclinics.health/services/sleep-programme/ - and she also has her own private practice: https://hmcoaching.ukFollow Holly on Instagram for more advice: https://www.instagram.com/_hm.coaching**************************************Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-streetInfo on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at -https://www.herringshoes.co.ukFor 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing: Check out the intro to the podcast.

If you're into fitness in Cheltenham, you're very likely to have come across Katie Brighton-Jones who trains people all over the town in various gyms, pools and fitness locations. I've often seen her out jogging in my local stomping ground of Leckhampton too.Katie is a all around font of fitness knowledge, but has two big specialities - working with people training for triathlons helping women experiencing peri menopause and the menopause stay fit.So, an ideal person to ask about running. Running (or initially jogging or just shuffling) is a great starting point for people looking to get moving and carries huge physiological and psychological upsides. But it can come with concerns over joint pain, injury etc.Katie is herself working her way back to running after a knee issue so great to pick her brains on a variety of running themes:1) Is Running good for us?2) What surface should we run on?3) How does running on the ground compare to the treadmill?4) What are the mental benefits of running (particularly, running outdoors)?5) Footwear - how important and what type of shoe should we look at? Do we need different shoes for different surfaces/seasons of the year?6) How do we avoid joint pain and/or injury?Follow Katie: https://www.instagram.com/kbj_fitness/?hl=enHope this is useful. I think for those of us who played a lot of football growing up, there is always a part of us that wonders... could I have made it if I'd tried harder, had more lucky breaks, backed myself more? Jordan Thomas is evidence that even in age when pro club's academies cast scouting nets far and wide across the country, it's possible for a talented kid to be overlooked - but then to make it pro anyway. What are your thoughts on one of the age old debates in my industry: are athletes born or made? Is it nature or nurture?Usually, we conclude it's a bit of both. But I certainly get the sense that Jack Clement may have been genetically predisposed to playing pro rugby. He didn't even play the game until the age of 14 and within a couple of years was representing England in his age group. This is also a brilliant story of serendipity - he only wound up discovering his aptitude for rugby after winning a cricket scholarship to the very prestigious Cheltenham College.Jack is still only in his mid 20s, but a sharp cookie. We talk about the importance of a positive proactive mindset when recovering from injury in rugby - injuries are a part of life in this most rugged of sports - and the psychology of still wanting the ball when results aren't great and confidence is low.Jack is also aware of the shortness of a rugby career and is sagely studying for a second career in finance.I hope you enjoy this one. It's struck me that people are bombarded by a lot of nuance and detail about physical training and fitness. And it's true you can go deep into the weeds if you're looking to maximise performance and conditioning. Not to mention appearance. But that's irrelevant to someone who isn't currently moving. The path to getting stronger is brilliantly simple: start lifting something. And beginning with your own body seems a solid and tech-free first step. Ross Mitchell and I have stayed in touch since he was a tutor on my Personal Training course and I always value his radical candour and ability to break the complicated and often emotionally complex into simple action. Here he runs through the literal exercises you can do to start building strength - for a stronger body today and when you're old. If you're looking to get stronger, I'd recommend following Ross (after listening to him here, of course). Let me know if this is useful. Remember something is always better than nothing when it comes to fitness. Go well and keep moving friends,

I believe everyone wants to be fit and healthy. But I also know that in this modern world that encourages sitting around and eating non nourishing food, it can be hard to know how to get going. So I found this conversation with my bro Max brilliant in breaking down simple steps to feeling healthier and happier. Areas covered include: Nutrition, Movement (big focus on walking), Daylight, Mindset and Social Connection. Let me know if this is useful. And let me know if you have tips for getting going you'd like me to share. If you'd like some help, I'd love to share the Triple Tonic experience with you - in person if you're in the Cheltenham area or remotely if you're located elsewhere. I hope you enjoy this uplifting conversation with Ash Loveridge as much as I did. Ash is a seasoned sports journalist who is approaching the 5th year of running the independent website https://stroudtimes.com In this episode we talk about how former Premier League footballer and Wales international Robbie Savage has helped lift Forest Green Rovers on and off the pitch. We also talk about the continued growth of Stroud Times and people's hunger for local news and sports coverage in an age where traditional outlets are under the pump.

Dr Laura O'Loghlen is a GP and private doctor in Cheltenham - co-founding Montpellier Medical in the heart of the town (https://www.montpelliermedical.co.uk) In this conversation we covered some key areas of how to stay healthy in winter including:* Modifying our physical output if fatigued/sleepy in the dark days of mid winter.* Sleep (and screens) * Alcohol * Vitamin D * Vitamin B12 * Relating to vitamin levels - the importance of blood tests. * Daylight * Socialising * Flu (and how this year's vaccine may have been dodged by the prevalent strain in the UK)I found this a really useful and practicable chat - and fun! Andy Tucker is a football legend where I live in Cheltenham - an ex player for Cheltenham Town FC and Gloucester City, he created soccer schools that are famous in the this part of the world. I met Claire Richardson recently at a networking event and was seriously impressed with her passion and vision - and overwhelming conviction that we can enjoy a healthy second half of life. I'm in my forties and I'm often saddened by the limiting beliefs of many of my peers. “I'm too old to exercise.” Or “it's time to maintain what I've got.” To be honest, I first noticed comments like this in my twenties. As Claire underscores with hard science - we can get fitter and stronger as we age. Claire has set up GHS Clinics - https://ghsclinics.health/services/ - in Cheltenham to help clients maximise their health-span (how long they live in good physical and mental health) so it's closer to their lifespan (total years lived). In this pod we talk about GHS' Second Prime plan and the importance of taking some time to create a plan for ageing well. ********Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-streetInfo on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at - https://www.herringshoes.co.ukFor 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing: Check out the intro to the podcast.

Powerful conversation with ex Antiguan and Barbudan international Craig Heskey on his role steering young players through the highs and lows of trying to make it as professional players at Liverpool Football Club. Craig over the past six or seven years - at Leyton Orient and Millwall previously - has been a pioneer in this new, and, I think, vital role.Craig and others' work is big from the clubs' perspective: by giving nurturing and mentoring care you increase the club's chances of maximising the talent in the ranks. But also from the players ' perspective, I love the fact that one of Craig's big drivers is keeping the players' joy for the game (whether they make it pro or not). We also discuss Craig's cousin, Ex England star Emile Heskey and his role as an inspirational figure to Craig. ****Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-streetInfo on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at - https://www.herringshoes.co.ukFor 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing: check out the intro to the podcast.

I've been to watch horse racing lots of times - most often here in the town I live in at the iconic Cheltenham Racecourse. And I know a fair bit about training - from a degree in sports science to qualifying as a personal trainer. But I don't know too much about the training of horses. Turns out they're not all that different to humans. It was illuminating then to chat with Max Kendrick - an ex jockey who know helps training horses at Fergal O'Brien's picturesque yard near Cheltenham. Max is doing pioneering work with horse heart rate monitors, that also track metics like the speed of the horse and distance covered. This gives insight that will help trainers coax horses to peak performance, but also from an animal welfare perspective make sure the horses aren't overtrained. Pretty cool to hear Max talk about how the data is often backing up old school trainers' ‘feel' for how the horses are.*******Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-streetInfo on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at - https://www.herringshoes.co.ukFor 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing check out the intro the podcast.

I've recently begun hosting a podcast called The Blindside for Gloucester Rugby. Rhys was a fascinating guest on that show, so it was a treat to get him on Sport and Life for a thorough conversation on health and fitness from a physio's perspective.Ground covered1) Rhys' sporting background, being deemed too small to be an elite goalkeeper.2) Training in physiotherapy 3) Working at Sheffield United Football Club4) The counselling role of the physio and the importance of creating a good ‘vibe' in the treatment room. 5) General tips for injury prevention including your pelvis position. 6) The spectre of brain injury in rugby and football and how Gloucester Rugby have combined with The University of Oxford in landmark new research to understand and minimise player concussion. Russell Milton has had a near 30-year relationship with ( couple of short spells away) Cheltenham Town as player, coach, head of recruitment and caretaker manager. I was loosely familiar with that. But loved hearing about ‘Milts' beginnings as a Kent boy who didn't start playing organised football until the age of 10. He played for Arsenal and, when released by the Gunners, spent a chunk of time playing in Hong Kong and Japan. An effervescent character! Russ is also a qualified PE teacher and he says having that qualification allowed him to have a go at being a pro with Cheltenham when the club went full-time in the 90s. Hope you enjoy this one.Go well and keep moving, Teddy

This is a little bit different. I qualified as a personal trainer a few years back, but alongside my sports broadcasting career have developed a slightly different training service for clients in Cheltenham: The Triple Tonic is based on three health pillars: movement, fresh air and conversation. My sister-in-law Kerry Halloran in this conversation has kindly offered to (gently) quiz about the evidence behind each pillar, how I fastened onto this approach and what the science says.We also discuss the nuance of each workout and how I incorporate balls, rackets, agility ladders and more while getting clients fitter and stronger in the great outdoors. If you're in Cheltenham and want to get out there with me, or live elsewhere and want some remote fitness coaching there is more info here: https://drapermedia.co.uk/the-triple-tonicInfo on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at - https://www.herringshoes.co.ukFor 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing check out the intro the podcast.Go well and keep moving, Teddy

Sporting a black eye today after a football injury, but very much feeling good after chatting to author Wayne Barton about two of my favourite topics: football history and Manchester United. I've just finished reading Wayne's book Football Taught by Matt Busby' and great to elucidate his findings on the quintessential style of United. It's hard to define - Wayne found it to be from and related to Hungarian football, Total Football but yet slightly different. Wayne does a great job here in articulating a way of playing that had practical elements, but also an ethereal freedom to it. As fan, there is a sense of flair and do and dash that feels a prerequisite of a United team - but perhaps different to other ‘entertaining' clubs, there is a firm commitment to winning. To win in style seems the ultimate goal. Pro boxing is a tough business starting out. You have to punch opponents, avoid being punched and you have to sell tickets - often while working a day job.I found this a fascinating insight into this world - Louis Bacon currently has a record of 2-0 and is still working three days a week as. landscape gardener. I hope Louis has a bright, healthy and successful future in the ring ahead. But significantly boxing has already helped him in life - he turned to the sport after getting punched in the face on his first day at high school.

I love speaking to people who are passionate, particularly those who are passionate about sport. Steve Kitchen is one of the most passionate people I've met when it comes to sport - especially sport in Gloucestershire. Steve is sports editor at the BBC's local radio station and loves his job and the local teams - he's been covering them for 30 years, but he was a fan way before that. We discuss football - Cheltenham Town football club, Forest Green Rovers and Gloucester City - Gloucester Rugby Club, horse racing at Prestbury Park, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club and women's sport and para athletes. Steve is poignantly touched by para sport as his sport-playing youth was abruptly changed when he was run over by a car, leaving him with life-changing injuries. While that may have stopped Steve playing the sports he loves, his enthusiasm for the local sports scene is unrivalled. Beat journalist like Steve are the lifeblood of sporting communities and long may he continue to document the exploits of local athletes for the fans.

I've known Alex Payne for well over a decade. We worked together covering rugby at Sky Sports and have both presented Sky Sports News. But this a man who wears many hats and seems to do very well whichever one he's sporting that moment. Alex still does ad hoc rugby presenting on TV - most recently The Lions tour of Australia for Sky - but is arguably better known for hosting the hugely successful podcast - The Good, The Bad and The Rugby: https://open.spotify.com/show/1LJJ9KUF4aAjcSPimyKfp3?si=29cc3e61ecff432dAlex and his pod buddies, England legends Mike Tindall and James Haskell, have created a gin - the proceeds of which help grassroots rugby and research into injury prevention and care: https://blackeyegin.co.ukEven that's not enough to sate his appetite for work though! Alex has also helped build a tech business that pairs social media influencers with brands: https://www.theinfluenceroom.com. But Alex in his very candid way admits he doesn't really use social media because it distracts him from his many jobs. He doesn't have the apps on his phone. I loved this conversation, in large part due to Alex's openness and willingness to chat about the complexities and contradictions of the world that's in front of us. I do find it very interesting that most of the successful people I know don't spend time scrolling on social media. I think kicking that vice will be big for me. How about you?One thing's for sure - as I too navigate the early steps of a similar path away from full-time broadcasting - Alex's example is an inspiring one. I'm just not sure how he keeps all the balls in the air. Let me know what you think of this conversation. Go well and keep moving, Teddy

Old School Soccer Story 13James is a good pal and a fitness professional who I hold in the highest esteem when it comes to training and h ealth information. But that's nothing compared to what he knows about Queens Park Rangers in the 1990s! Based in the Cotswolds now James was a West London lad who remembers all the swashbuckling players who lifted The Rs to a 5th placed finish in 92/93. Follow James: aka_thefitnesspro His new kids football camps: https://www.elitesoccerstars.com

A very uplifting and practical conversation with the effervescent Shane Duff. Shane's pro football career was prematurely ended through a freak injury, but he's rebuilt himself as a successful property developer in Cheltenham. ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/

I found this conversation with Ben, an Osteopath at Origin Health Clinic - https://originhealthgroup.com - a fascinating thought-provoker.Ben talks about his dramatic night earlier this year when he unexpectedly came close to his lights going out and how he approaches life with that palpable sense of mortality. With a baby at home we also discuss how the experience has affected his outlook on work and spending time with his wife and daughter. Ben is also coming back from stomach surgery and is targeting a triathlon to galvanise his return to fitness. We talk about that dance between challenging ourselves physically and looking after our body so it continues to serve us into old age. We also discuss Ben's multi-discipline outlook and how he and his brother, Dan work with other practitioners at Origin, including physiotherapists and private GPs, to make sure their patients get the most effective care.

Jon Palmer has followed Cheltenham Town FC for decades, man and boy, personally and professionally. So great to get his take on the big story in my hometown - the return of Steve Cotterill 23 years on from his historic first stint at the club.Cotterill lead Cheltenham into the football league as a young manager and JP explains why he believes a successful second era could be upon us. JP continues to illustrate the power and importance of local beat journalists in sport.

I've always enjoyed interviewing Chris during his rise as a respected but, in retrospect, underrated boxer who upset big names to become world champion. Spectacular nights followed in his hometown of Bournemouth. Then came defeat in 2024 to Gilberto Ramirez. But Chris' hunger for the sport remains ravenous. He's very candid though about the sense of internal conflict he feels being away from his two little boys. He's very real in articulating something I've experienced and I think a lot of us can identify with - the pull to provide coupled with the pain of not being able to be physically present with our kids because of our jobs. He also speaks here powerfully and glowingly about a former high-school teacher who left a lasting impression on him and others - Mr Clayton. I'm sure a lot of us can resonate with the idea of a hugely influential teacher. Mr Sockelov and Mr Dudah (I can't remember the spellings, sorry as both were from Eastern European families) left a lasting mark on me and I think it's important for teachers to here stories like Chris'. Teachers - you are vital!Thought s on this? Fatherhood? Influential teachers?

Really candid conversation with Charlie here about the challenges, uncertainties and pressures of one and two-year contracts when you're a dad. We also talk about the physical challenges of having twins whilst playing for Cheltenham Town FC too - trying to train and play after a few hours sleep.Ultimately, fans want their teams to win, but I do think we underestimate how difficult pro sport can be - particularly when you're not financially set from your playing days. Charlie, 32, talks openly here about the future and what his next career could be. As someone who was lucky enough to do a fun job, but now I have to ‘go again' I can certainly empathise with how daunting (and exciting) that can be.
