We begin by revisiting Peter's career, including the origins of his iconic two-handed technique, his two World Open finals against Jansher Khan, and what it was like competing against both Jansher and the legendary Jahangir Khan. The conversation then turns to the crux of the episode - the most recent controversies surrounding World #1 Mostafa Asal. We break down the controversy from El Gouna, including the highly disputed stroke and conduct stroke at 8–7 in the fifth against Diego Elias—a decision that proved decisive in the outcome of the match . We also get into his thoughts on the recent Observer article which he feels was a disservice to Asal and to the game as a whole. It's a candid discussion from an absolute legend of the game.

This week Brian and Harrison intro the show with the general banter, they cover; attending STIHL's 100 year anniversary celebration (meeting Dr Stihl himself!), Brian does the grocery shopping for the first time in 5 years and steals a trolly, plus all the major topics making AFL headlines. This week on Life of Brian, BT and Harrison have the pleasure of chatting with former world champion martial artist, Sam Greco. With a career spanning 35 years Sam had an astonishing record of 147 fights - 131 wins - 11 loses - 3 draws - 2 no contest. This reflects the numerous disciplines he competed in: K1 Kickboxing, Full Contact Karate and MMA. He was a 3x World Kickboxing Champion and a World Full Contact Karatê Champion. Sam grew up in Melbourne's inner-North. To escape the dangers of this rough environment, he found balance, discipline and purpose in the gym. With an unmatched mental fortitude and an imposing 6'3" muscle bound frame, he could knock out opponents with sheer brute force. From his rise through the fight game to becoming one of world's most respected combat sports figures, Sam opens up on the highs, the setbacks, and what it really takes to make it at the elite level. They also dive into the current state of UFC and MMA, Sam's role coaching the next generation, and what's changed in the fight game over the years. BT and Sam also rewind to where their friendship began - over coffees at Sam's iconic café, Don Camillo's. Raw, honest, and full of energy - this is one you don't want to miss. We hope you enjoy the conversation. This episode was originally published on August 19th, 2021. This week's podcast guest is especially exciting to me as he is one of my literary heroes. John McPhee [24:10] is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author (Annals of the Former World), and in his numerous other books he has written about such diverse topics as nuclear energy, the merchant marine, basketball, Alaska, bark canoes, oranges, continental drift, flood control, tennis, farmer's markets, and many other eclectic topics. Whether or not you are interested in a subject, you can be sure you will be when you finish reading one of his books you will be fascinated. John has also been a staff writer for The New Yorker since the 1960s. In our interview, he talks about his two favorite fish to catch on the fly rod--the American shad (which he wrote an entire book about, The Founding Fish), and the chain pickerel, which he did not write a book about but did pen a short essay on in his collection of stories The Patch. (I doubt is anyone in the world who would count those two fish in combination as their favorites--but he is never conventional.) I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed talking to him. In the Fly Box this week, we have some great questions and tips: A reminder from a listener that I wrote an encyclopedia of fly fishing. Some great tips from a listener on using tippet rings. A question about what constitutes a watershed when concerned about transporting aquatic invasives. A suggestion from a listener on ways to offset your carbon footprint when taking fishing trips. Which is a better rod for fishing the surf and jetties--a traditional 9-foot 9-weight rod or a two-handed rod? Do you always recommend using a net? A listener calls me on the carpet for my flippant remark about manhandling carp. A great thought from a listener that sometimes taking photos of fish hinders the moment.

"Anything beats writing. Writing is tough," says John McPhee, staff writer for The New Yorker and author of more than thirty books of nonfiction.Hey CNFers, this is Episode 500 of The Creative Nonfiction Podcast, the show where I speak to tellers of true tales about the true tales they tell. There are kilometer stones like 100, 200, 300, and 400, but this one, this is a milestone and it features the writer and journalist who made me want to write narrative nonfiction in the first place: John McPhee.John is a titan, a soft-spoken titan. He is the author of more than 30 books, including A Sense of Where You Are, Levels of the Game, his Pulitzer Prize-winning Annals of the Former World, and the book that made me want to write nonfiction: The Survival of the Bark Canoe. John is 94 years young, still lives in Princeton where he has taught an exclusive masterclass on factual storytelling, a class taken by the likes of David Remnick and the late Grant Wahl, I believe, among countless people who have gone on to write and report with distinction. He's been a staff writer for The New Yorker since the 1960s when William Shawn was the editor. Not long thereafter, he was offered a job to teach at his alma mater Princeton University and he famously edited students' submissions not unlike how Shawn edited him at The New Yorker. He's written about such wide ranging topics from basketball, to tennis, to bark canoes, to Alaska, to lacrosse, to oranges, to myriad topics in geology.John is synonymous with thinking through structure and coming up with unique structures for most of his stories, each one something of a fingerprint: no two are alike and the facts borne out from this intensive, slow reporting dictate the shape of the story he has locked into. His work is methodical and patient. He hangs out. He fills notebook after notebook, rarely uses a recorder, maybe only if there's someone speaking in such technical jargon that there's no way to keep pace. His career has been this wonderful balance of give and take: teach for most of the year and not write; then write and not teach. John is unassuming and gentle and an example of how you can do this work without bombast or pyro and still be riveting and sometimes downright hilarious. So we talk about: The influence of his high school English teacher Olive McKee Living room fighters Writing on spec The notebooks he's used for decades How a lack of confidences is an asset What a good editor does Writing as teaching How having a plan frees you to write The panic of having not written leads to productivity And how proud of his daughters he isParting shot on what it all means at 500 and maybe where I see the show going for the next 500.Order The Front RunnerNewsletter: Rage Against the AlgorithmWelcome to Pitch ClubShow notes: brendanomeara.com

A tragic story in the world of chess, as 29-year-old Chess Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky was found dead this week at his home in Charlotte. As of this recording, there is no official cause of death, but late this week police acknowledged they were investigating his death as a possible drug overdose/suicide. Meantime, much of the chess world is pointing fingers at 50-year-old former chess World Champion, Vladimir Kramnik who has viciously, repeatedly and baselessly accused Naroditsky of cheating over the years. The International Chess Federation announced it was investigating Kramnik for his public comments before and after Naroditsky’s death, but many say it’s too little, too late.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Former World Number One tennis player Lindsay Davenport joins Jeff and the guys on this episode, and her journey to the top of the tennis world is anything but typical. In fact, Lindsay refers to it as the "accident" story. Raised in a volleyball family, with her father an Olympian, Lindsay was expected to eventually leave tennis behind and follow in those footsteps. Instead, she charted her own path, turning pro as a teenager and going on to win multiple Grand Slam titles, an Olympic Gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games, and later becoming a coach to some of today's top women's players.Beyond her storied career, Lindsay is also a dedicated sports mom. Her son was one of the world's top junior tennis players and is now competing at the collegiate level for Stanford. Meanwhile, her daughter is following the family's volleyball legacy and will be playing for USC next year. Lindsay discusses pursing her dream when it wasn't what her parents wanted. She also talks about the decision she made to turn pro at an early age, and gives her opinion on whether today's elite players should turn pro or play in college. And, for tennis fans, she shares some great inside info on the world of tennis.

PLS NOTE: There is some swearing in this episode and it is not one that is suitable for children. What's it like to be the no.1 12U player in the World? To be the youngest player ever to be signed by the IMG management company. To win a full scholarship to one of the most famous tennis academies in the World.Reckon the future for that player and his family was bright? Fame and riches around the corner?Today's guest, Todd Ley who hails from Adelaide in Australia, was in exactly that position. And has written all about that part of the journey and what happened next in a searingly honest book called Smashed. As you'll hear today, what happened next was not fame and fortune. What came next was darkness and at times despair. A chapter which Todd is now moving on from as he rides the rollercoaster of life working in the world of coaching - and I hope setting down what happened in the book will help him do just that. It has certainly helped me think about the journey we are on as a tennis family and why we are on it. It has helped me gain perspective of what is important and for that I thank Todd.Today's episode may not be easy listening at times, you might not agree with everything Todd says, but do take a listen because Todd's story and messages will I think help our family and our tennis journeys and I hope it will maybe help yours too.Visit Todd Ley's website to find about more about the book and BUY A COPY OF SMASHED NOWThanks to FeedSpot for naming My Tennis Journey as a Top 5 UK tennis podcast - much appreciated! Let's be clear about one thing: Lisa Isom has been crushing the endurance sports scene for a long time....and she's showing no signs of slowing down, either. Now in her 50s, the Eagle Valley High School legend, XTERRA Worlds podium placer and former USA Mountain trail team member is giving back some of her wisdom as head coach of the Battle Mountain Nordic ski team. Pretty cool for someone who originally earned a college scholarship for volleyball and didn't run her first cross-country race until after high school.... Isom would need at least a 3 hours podcast to share all of her sports stories and wisdom, but we only had about 45 minutes before she had to head out from Tennessee Pass for practice in Vail. ...so....this is all for now...but we'd love to bring her back on the show sometime in the future.
