In today's podcast we talk about fixing the broken model for delivering major infrastructure projects in the UK. Why do we need to fix this model?Well, as we know, Britain needs high performing infrastructure if we are to improve the productivity of our economy and boost living standards for communities.“Yet the model we use to deliver and operate much of this infrastructure is broken. “Too often it produces assets and networks that are expensive, perform poorly and fail to exploit the advances in technology that are transforming other industries. Too often the supply chain that delivers our infrastructure seems locked into a cycle of low margins, low investment and dysfunctional relationships.”Not my word but those of the 2017 Infrastructure Client Group report “From Transactions to Enterprises” which unpacked the challenge. And recent project outcomes bear this out if we consider projects such as Crossrail, Jubilee Line Extension, West Coast Mainline upgrade, Hinkley Point C, HS2 – the list goes on. And there are of course many more examples of smaller infrastructure projects failing to deliver. So back in 2017, following this ICG report, Project 13 was born to tackle the problem - an industry-led response to delivery models that fail not just clients and their suppliers, but also the operators and users of our infrastructure systems and networks.Seven years on and the project is going from strength to strength, with support from the World Economic Forum and the Institution of Civil Engineers plus a rake of influential businesses, people and projects. So to find out a bit more, my guest today is Dale Evans, Chair of the Project 13 Strategy Group and partner at Allora Infrastructure. Dale has been intimately involved in the evolution of Project 13 from his time chairing the ICG and while driving industry change as he led the influential @onealliance for Anglian Water.ResourcesProject 13Infrastructure Client GroupFrom Transactions to EnterprisesProject 13 PillarsTransforming Infrastructure PerformanceThe Construction Playbook

Jan France was born in Chicago, to a mother who was an RN, a father who served in World War II, and a grandfather who served in World War I. She has devoted much of her life to GIVING AND SERVICE. In 1983, she conceived the idea for a wagon train in June 1983, organized, was the executive director, strategic planner, coordinator of a 3-year plan, and fund-raiser of $3 million dollars in sponsorships for the Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train, which covered 3,228 miles within the state, planned the route to 150 overnight stops in 150 communities to represent the 150 years since Texas's independence, created the logo, did the marketing, and drove the first wagon herself. Soon she had assistant and wagon masters such as: Walt Garrison, fullback for the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Landry, head coach for the Dallas Cowboys, Gib Lewis, Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives and other with Governor Mark White of Texas riding in the front wagon with Jan, sponsored by: Coca-Cola, Wrangler Jeans, Dairy Queen, Texas National Bank Dallas, Texas National Telephone Association, John Deere, American Honda Motor Co, Southwestern Bell Telephone and others.  Later in 2002, in Texas, she taught English to Spanish speaking immigrants at night for free, and founded America's Disaster Relief, which aided various disaster-affected areas across the United States, she kicked into high gear, using her past marketing and organizational skills, bringing into play 5 vans with trailers, 10 drivers, supplies, donations and funds, She was instrumental in relocating 100 families [500 people] into homes completely furnished to victims of Forest Fires, Cedar Rapid, IA floods, Boulder Colorado floods and the locals of Western Colorado.                   With the left-over donations, in 2006 she bought a 750 square foot thrift shop for $1,000.00 in Montrose, Colorado, which expanded to 10,000 square feet, where 100% of the profits went to disaster relief and in 2008 she built a food truck on a 16 ft flat-bed trailer, selling  tamales and other items with partner GUMER, volunteering 12 months a year for 7 years, with 100% of the net profits going to American Disaster Relief, from serving areas from Colorado to Florida, Alabama, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Missouri, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, in August 29 2005, where she brought back to her home, now living in Colorado, people who had nothing but the clothes on their backs. She also served at Hurricane Sandy, NY in 2012 when I met her while I was volunteering at Midland Beach, Staten Island, one of the worst hit areas, and stayed in touch since. In 2015 they progressed to a Mobile Kitchen where they no longer needed a commissary where they had to pay to prepare the Tamales and foods, or sleep in truck seats or motel rooms, they had a shower, bed and restroom and kitchen, all with the mission of aid to others. However, in the same year Jan was diagnosed with kidney disease at the age of 70. Despite that diagnosis, she continued to volunteer and fundraise for several years, until last year 2023, deciding to sell the Mobile Kitchen and cancel all events, still volunteering and fundraising remotely. Her tireless efforts over the years have been an inspiration to many. She attended in her early days, New York Institute of Interior Design – New York, New York, Barbizon School of Modeling before heading off to Saint Petersburg College / University of South Florida. She became a Showroom & Runway model in New York City and Florida and a Ford Agency Model…… She was an Equestrian: riding, driving a team, riding instructor, endurance, cross country. TVC 642.3: Ed welcomes Julie Rogers Pomilia, the youngest daughter of Tom Fox (the only biological son of Dale Evans by her first marriage), and the granddaughter of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, the Royal Western Couple of American pop culture, and the “Brad and Angelina” of their era. Julie's book, Your Heroes, My Grandparents: A Granddaughter's Love, is the storybook tale of a little girl who just happened to have two famous relatives and who cherished every moment that she spent with them. Topics this segment include some of the many ways in Roy and Dale were both ahead of their time, including Roy's business savvy (and, particularly, his understanding of “branding” into marketing and advertising, long before branding as we know it today came to be), his love of gemstones, and the value he put on loyalty. "The Old Rugged Cross" has been a country gospel favorite ever since it became the title song of Ernest Tubb's 1952 gospel album; it has been performed by some of the twentieth century's most important recording artists, including Al Green, Andy Griffith, Anne Murray, Brad Paisley, Chet Atkins, Chris Barber, John Berry, Floyd Cramer, George Jones, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash and June Carter, Kevin Max, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Jo Stafford, Gordon MacRae, Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, Ricky Van Shelton, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans,[9] The Oak Ridge Boys, The Statler Brothers, Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, George Beverly Shea, James Morrison on the 1990 album "Snappy Doo", and John Prine on the 2007 album "Standard Songs for Average People" with Mac Wiseman. British television dramatist Dennis Potter used the gospel song prominently in several of his plays, most notably Pennies from Heaven (1978); and the song also played a major part in "Gridlock" (2007), an episode of the long-running sci-fi drama series Doctor Who. In early 2009, the song was covered by Ronnie Milsap on his gospel album Then Sings My Soul.

Julie Rogers Pomilia is the granddaughter of the iconic and legendary Western movie and TV stars, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. In her groundbreaking book, "Your Heroes, My Grandparents," Julie offers a unique and personal perspective on the lives of her famous grandparents, who were known as the "Royal Western Couple." Growing up during the peak of their popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, Julie witnessed firsthand the love and acceptance her grandparents embodied as they adopted five children from different backgrounds and cultures. As the youngest daughter of Dale Evans' only biological son, Julie shares heartfelt stories about living with her famous grandparents and how they embraced the concept of a blended family. In a time when the idea of adoption was not widely discussed, Roy and Dale stood out as trailblazers, creating a diverse and loving household. Their brood of children, often seen in matching Western outfits, became a symbol of their unconventional but inclusive family.Throughout the book, Julie delves into various topics and anecdotes, shedding light on the challenges and pressures her grandparents faced in the entertainment industry. She recounts how Hollywood demanded a facade of perfection, revealing the lengths her grandfather went to meet the industry's standards, including using eyedrops to enhance his appearance. Despite the demands, Roy and Dale always made time for their family, prioritizing birthdays, school plays, and special events. They showed that family was everything, regardless of their fame and commitments.Julie also uncovers the lesser-known aspects of her grandmother's life, sharing Dale's difficult journey to fame, which included early marriages, divorces, and intense struggles. But Dale's indomitable spirit and perseverance led her to become an iconic figure in her own right. Meanwhile, Julie recalls her own realization of her grandparents' fame when she saw her grandpa's photo on the cover of a Weekly Scholastic Reader in second grade, assuming it was a normal occurrence for everyone. The book highlights the genuine and unassuming nature of Roy and Dale. Julie reveals how her grandma, the songwriter behind "Happy Trails," never made a big deal out of her accomplishments, and her grandpa, a bashful country boy, was hard to truly know. But their ordinary lives were filled with extraordinary experiences and an unbreakable bond that endured through personal tragedies, including the loss of three of their own children.Julie shares delightful stories of the family's occasional appearances on television, from Billy Graham Crusades to salad dressing commercials and the Jonathan Winters Christmas Show. Each chapter presents a stand-alone story, offering readers an intimate, humorous, and tender glimpse into the lives of these beloved American heroes."Your Heroes, My Grandparents" is a captivating memoir that transports readers through Julie Rogers Pomilia's cherished memories, spanning from her earliest recollections to the time of her grandparents' passing. With warmth and positivity, Julie invites readers to connect with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, demonstrating why they remain iconic figures who left an indelible mark on American history. We knew them as our heroes, but she knew them as simply, Grandma and Grandpa. Having lived through the 50's and 60's at the height of their popularity, and on into these current times when few people under the age of 50 remember them more as historic figures that had a great impact on American culture. Her idilic, special scrapbook moments are filled with birthdays, Christmases and recitals and they are seasoned with Hollywood events, backstage explorations, movie sets and TV appearances. Then there's the time her second grade teacher asked her if she could identify the cowboy on the cover of her Weekly Reader. Julie said, “That's my grandpa,” and went home to ask her mom why Grandpa is famous.Julie grew up singing with her sisters and parents, sometimes backing up her grandparents at shows, parades and rodeos. Iconic show biz figures were in and out of the ranch but mostly, Grandpa hung with Clark Gable because they shared hobbies and Nudie Cohn because he designed Grandma and Grandpa's cosutmes.Julie shares her most precious memories of riding on the back of Grandpa's motorcycle and gunning it back and forth across an empty air strip, pheasant hunting… not because she likes it but because she loved making memories with Grandpa, traveling to Scotland with Grandma who made every adventure an event and the true story of Dale Evans' heartbreaking journey towards stardom which required her to keep her son Tom a secret. Also, whatever did happen to Trigger? The 36th annual Indian Expo was to kick off as usual, with a parade featuring Kiowa, Comanche, Apache, Fort Sill Apache, Ponca, Pawnee, Delaware, Cheyenne, Arapaho Caddo, Osage, Sac, Fox, Otoe-Missouri, Wichita, and up to 50 other tribes proudly singing, drumming and dancing their way in their regalia down Main Street. As every year, a Native celebrity was selected as “Indian of the Year” and in 1967, the Choctaw “King of the Cowboys”, Roy Rogers was the grateful recipient. There he rode, cowboy hat and all, in a convertible, along with his cowgirl wife, Dale Evans adorned in an apple-print dress. Seated between the two was a young girl, also wearing a dress with apple print. The girl's name was Mary Little Doe or “Dodie” for short, and I had the honor of visiting with Dodie (Choctaw) to hear her story in this 3-part series. Listeners, this is one you do not want to miss! In this episode, you'll hear about: The surprising story of Dale Evans' firstborn son Roy Rogers and Dale Evans - their early life, careers, heartbreak in the love department prior to meeting each other, and finally their love story Roy Rogers' trips to children's hospitals with his horse, Trigger who would climb the stairs to see the kids The hilarious story of Roy and Dale's wedding in Oklahoma Anadarko, Ok (my hometown) and Horace Poolaw and Robert Goombi Jr's connection to Dodie and her parents Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 coming up next! Have you ever heard the famous song, “Happy Trails to You”? Do you know who wrote and performed it? In part one of this episode, we met the lovely Dodie Rogers (Choctaw), adopted daughter of the legendary “King of the Cowboys”, Roy Rogers (also Choctaw) and his talented wife, Dale Evans, who wrote the aforementioned song. Together they performed “Happy Trails to You” many times over. Even to this day, some of the younger generations are familiar with the piece – and thus the Rogers legend lives on. Here in Part 2, Dodie continues to share the inspiring, yet heartbreaking story of the Rogers family – a family filled with love bursting at the seams, breaking social norms, changing perspectives on autism, and paving the way for future adoptive families. You may need to grab your Kleenex box for this one, because as you'll hear, this family faced one loss after another. And yet, their faith in God remained strong, while their family drew closer through every single challenge. You'll also hear about: • Roy and Dale's 9 children and their interesting stories • The inspiring, yet humorous story about how Dodie was adopted • The Chicki Wicki Choctaw song, written for Dodie by her mom (you'll also get to hear the song) • My own personal theory about why Dale started pushing Dodie to learn more about her heritage Stay tuned for part 3 coming up next! Special thanks to Anadarko Heritage Museum for pulling some photos of Roy, Dale and Dodie Rogers and their visit to Anadarko!
