The American fighter quickly rose up the heavyweight rankings by finishing all of his opponents in the first round by KO, TKO or submission. But it was his knockout power that was really on display once he entered the UFC as he finished his first 4 opponents by strikes in round 1. And in the process, he became the UFC interim heavyweight champion. Although he was very close to unifying the belt, he was unable to get the job done and after picking up another defeat, he called it a career. So how good was Shane Carwin actually? As you prepare to give thanks for all that's in your life through food, family and football, I'll be sure to set the table with all of the fixins and serve up some hard hitting sports talk to whet your appetite as Episode #225 is hot out of the oven! On deck: (6:50) The NFL had a very interesting Week 11, with some surprising winners (i.e. MIN & IND) and shocking losers (i.e. TEN & BUF) as I cover all that happened throughout the league. Is it time to take the Colts seriously? What about the Patriots? Can the Eagles make a run in the NFC East? Is the Chief defense for real? I'll share a take or two on the Steelers wild comeback falling short vs. the Chargers. I'll take an early peek at the Thanksgiving games (HINT: Not too much to write home about!) and a captivating Week 12 schedule to cap off your holiday weekend. (40:36) The college football season continues to impress as there were not one, but two teams, that drop out of the running for the playoff set for New Year's Eve as Michigan State and Oregon were embarrassed on Saturday. What does this mean for Cincinnati? Are they an automatic to make the college football playoff? Is Ohio State the hottest team in the country? I'll preview what will be a fascinating slate of games this weekend, highlighted by the grudge match at the Big House between Ohio St. vs. Michigan. (55:58) The Lakers (aka The Expendables) haven't been able to get in sync during the early part of the season. The big news was the fracas in Detroit where LeBron James whacked Isaiah Stewart across the face after a free throw attempt. Will this team get out of their malaise any time soon? I compare them to another veteran team of the past that had their shortcomings, but made it to an NBA Final in the process. I'll also get into the potential return of Klay Thompson, the first coach fired this season comes from the Sacramento Kings, a huge loss for the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Phoenix Suns torrid streak and other top stories from the past week in the Association. (1:06:00) The Islanders have ended their 13 game odyssey throughout North America with two home games in their brand spanking new arena (UBS Arena) over the past weekend. But when they ended their long road trip with a four game losing streak, only to top it off with two more losses at home, which begs the question. Will they be able to turn it around quickly and not fall any deeper in the Eastern Conference? I'll discuss the latest with a key player from the two time defending Cup champions going out indefinitely with an injury (TB's Brayden Point), a COVID breakout in Ottawa and the Thanksgiving Friday game which has become an annual matchup between two original six teams (i.e. Rangers-Bruins) (1:15:53) There's been some activity in free agency throughout baseball with the impending doom of the collective bargaining agreement expiring on December 1st. Some pitchers have re-signed with their team (Toronto's Jose Berrios) and some have changed addresses, which includes former Mets starter, Noah Syndergaard. So you know I have a couple of things to get off of my chest about this. The Yankees are posturing for a big off-season, but again, baseball armageddon is coming. Will it be a long, cold, hard winter for the sport? I also have a few choice words for super agent Scott Boras as he chimes in about how teams are 'tanking' before the trade deadline and how it affects business with his clients. (1:22:54) Welterweight Terence Crawford wins in a 10th round TKO over Shawn Porter on Saturday night. Is there a chance that we can see a fight with Errol Spence, Jr. on the horizon? (1:24:59) In closing, my Hero and Zero of the Week. The Revenge crew have dropped the first page of their creature-feature, action-adventure, web comic, “Operation: B.L.U.E.” If today was the year 1985 the elevator pitch would be: “Imagine the A-team (but as bad-o ladies) hunting down the giant mutant bear from Prophecy. A new page will drop every Friday night, free of course (as always). Later, there will be some “paid content” showing how this beasty sausage is made (gross). We gotta’ keep the lights on some how. Sample the creative process, mid-grind:Wow…. Would you look at all that… stuff. Just for one little page. Again, the new page (pg. #0) is already up and ready for consumption. So you get some sci-fi, some war and so on. Setting the classic TV vibe of Outer Limits or Twilight Zone with a diversity of characters, voices, and styles. Action Plan: https://jimharshawjr.com/ACTION Free Clarity Call: https://jimharshawjr.com/APPLY   How do the best in the world handle failure? What keeps them going? What makes them extraordinary? Michael Chandler grew up in a typical blue-collar, hard-working, middle-America household. He attributes a lot of his work ethic to the example his parents provided. Passing on scholarship offers to smaller schools, Michael took a leap of faith and walked onto the University of Missouri wrestling team in 2004 after high school graduation. He knew “betting on himself” was a gamble and that it's no easy task to compete at the highest level of college wrestling. But that didn't stop him.  In 2009, Michael competed in his first MMA fight, won by first-round TKO, and hasn't looked back since.  In this episode, we're going inside the mind and life of former Bellator world champion and future UFC world champion after a loss to learn how he prepares to win his next fight! Listen in as he shares how to create incredible self-belief so you can start embracing your potential despite and sometimes even because of failure.  Every minute of this interview is nothing short of amazing so don't miss it! UFC VEGAS 41: COSTA VS VETTORI | 6th Round Post-Fight Show

Bloody Elbow Presents

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2021 50:32

Bloody Elbow fight experts, Zane Simon & Eddie Mercado, are BACK tonight – Sat, Oct 23rd, to breakdown the UFC Vegas 41 ‘Paulo Costa vs. Marvin Vettori' event. The guys will have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event. (SPOILERS...) This afternoon the UFC brought us yet another (the 9th in a row actually) Fight Night card from the smaller octagon at the APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, airing LIVE on ESPN+. The UFC Vegas 41 event showcased top-ranked MW Championship foes, Paulo ‘The Eraser' Costa, (No. 2), & ‘The Italian Dream' Marvin Vettori, (No. 5). Neither combatant had fought since their defeats at the hands of Israel Adesanya at UFC 263 & UFC 253, respectively. The main event contest became a 205lbs catchweight/LHW bout just a few days ago, when “The Eraser” failed to make weight. This brawl became an instant classic. Costa was warned about his hands more than once & had a point removed for an early eye-poke in the 2nd Rd. We got a solid 5 rds of action, pressure, blows, strikes & aggression from both men. After all of that, the judges decided Vettori was the unanimous victor, it was close, but this felt like the right call. Prior to that, our LW Co-Main event today had Grant ‘KGD' Dawson enter the Octagon on an 8-fight win streak against Rick/y ‘The Gladiator' Glenn. In a solid back-n-forth effort from both men, it went the distance resulting in the judges deciding on a Majority Draw, which is always a major bummer for everyone involved. On the 8-fight prelims card, our featured prelim won FOTN for the overall event -- Gregory Rodrigues proved victorious with a standing TKO via punches in the 2nd Rd over Jun Yong Park. Gregory hit Park with gigantic right hands, rocking him & sending him stumbling, took advantage of his foes weakness, followed it all up with a massive uppercut which put him to sleep standing. The fighter from New York found success early with his skills in Brazilian jiu jitsu. But after going 4-4 in the UFC, his career looked like it would be average at best. But then he joined the fourth season of the ultimate fighter which was a season that consisted of UFC fighters who had not fought for the title. Matt won the season which lead to an immediate shot at the UFC welterweight championship, His opponent was champion, Georges St-Pierre, who was an 11-1 favourite . But Matt ended up winning the fight with a first round TKO. Making him the UFC welterweight champion. This win is regarded by many as the biggest upset in MMA history. Regardless, he lost the belt immediately in a rematch to Georges St-Pierre before going 1-2 to finish off his career. So how good was Matt Serra actually? The Coach, Jonathan Coachman, is joined by Andrew Gombas (@BetsandPicksMMA) to dish out the best bets for UFC Vegas 39: Dern-Rodriguez. Ranked women's strawweight contenders top the card on Saturday's UFC Fight Night: Dern vs. Rodriguez as fourth-ranked Mackenzie Dern meets sixth-ranked Marina Rodriguez in the main event. The main UFC fight card from the Apex facility in Las Vegas is set for 4 p.m. ET. Dern is a -170 favorite (risk $170 to win $100), while Rodriguez is a +145 underdog (risk $100 to win $145) in the latest UFC Fight Night: Dern vs. Rodriguez odds at Caesars Sportsbook. Gombas is a former NCAA wrestler who taps into his experience on the mat to help understand and dissect the X's and O's of MMA matchups in a manner that sets him apart from other MMA analysts. He started the MMA handicapping service MMA Knockout Bets in 2018 and has shown a profit every year since. Last week at UFC Fight Night: Santos vs. Walker, Gombas went 7-4 for 2.95 units profit and also hit the main event on Thiago Santos for his plays on SportsLine.com. Now, he has locked in on UFC Fight Night: Dern vs. Rodriguez from every angle and released his top selections. A successful parlay of these picks would result in a payout of nearly 16-1! Gombas knows the 28-year-old Dern is a five-year UFC veteran who has been on a roll, winning her last four fights, including three of those by submission. In her last bout in April, she proved her dominance by defeating Nina Nunes by submission at 4:48 of the first round. She is 11-1 in her career with seven wins by submission and four by decision. Rodriguez (14-1-2) has also been a force, winning her last two fights this year, including a TKO of Amanda Ribas in January and a unanimous decision victory over Michelle Waterson in May. Ribas is the only one to have handed Dern a loss in her career. Rodriguez is in her sixth season as a professional and had began her career with a 10-0 mark. To borrow the famous tagline of Australian former Formula 1 ace Mark Webber, UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski showed true “Aussie grit” as he retained his undisputed title in the main event of UFC 266.Volkanovski claimed a landslide decision on the scorecards after his bout with Brian Ortega went the distance, but the 49-46, 50-45, 50-44 scorecards don’t tell the full story of the fight, as Volkanovski showed remarkable composure and determination to fight his way not one, but two deep Ortega chokes in Round 3 before proceeding to batter the challenger to a near TKO at the end of the same round.Things were much more straightforward for the other world champion on show, as Valentina Shevchenko took the opportunity to show us what most fans already know – that she’s one of the most complete mixed martial artists, male or female, on the planet. On this week’s show, we look back at the two title fights from Las Vegas and offer our take on Nick Diaz’s comeback defeat to Robbie Lawler in their main card matchup. We also look ahead to Bellator 267 as world-class MMA finally makes a return to England with a dynamite rematch between London’s own Michael “Venom” Page and the only man to defeat him, three-time former welterweight champion Douglas Lima. There’s also time to look ahead to Saturday’s UFC event at the UFC Apex, as the spectacular Johnny Walker gets his chance to gatecrash the light heavyweight title picture when he takes on former title challenger Thiago Santos. It’s another packed show, and it’s all yours, right here! (ALL Money Goes to Charity) https://www.patreon.com/kiiyonkimura How GOOD was Carlos Condit Actually? Carlos Condit will go down as one of the greatest fighters to not become an undisputed UFC champion. The fighter from Albuquerque built a reputation as a finisher with his first 24 wins ending by KO, TKO or submission. And in the process, he became the WEC welterweight champion and defended that belt 3 times. Although he lost his debut fight in the UFC, he went on to win his next 5 which lead to him becoming the UFC interim welterweight champion. And he looked very close to unifying that belt at UFC 154, but ultimately he was unable to get the job done. But he remained as a top welterweight which lead to a second shot at the title at UFC 195. And although he was even closer to capturing the belt in this fight, the decision did not end in his favour. After this he went 2-5 and following his most recent defeat at UFC 264, he called it a career. So how good was Carlos Condit actually? Kathleen opens the show drinking a Holy Donut Stout by Maine's Lone Pine Brewing, brought to her by her friend and fellow comedian Kelly MacFarland. She also gives a shoutout to Little Big Town for the “Day Drinking” trucker hat that was sent after Kathleen tasted their Day Drinking canned wine on a previous Pubcast. TERMITE SHOUTOUTS: Kathleen gives thanks to the Termites who leave notes at shows and send mail to her PO Box. She begins by thanking Termite Adam, who made his mother proud by sending the completed set of South Carolina rocks glasses. Also big thanks to Termite Summer for the Trader Joe's Carolina Gold bbq sauce and the “Calm Down Karen” t-shirt. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Pumpkin Spice Cheerios, which she doesn't like because she doesn't like ANY pumpkin flavor (she and her dad always ask her mom to make a chocolate pie for any holiday), and then moves onto Taco Bell's Avocado Ranch sauce, which she recommends putting on anything. Kathleen finishes her tasting by sampling Cheeto's Crunch Pop Mix, telling Termites to stick with the original Cheeto's. ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM REVIEW: As a follow-up to Episode 38, Kathleen visited the ISGM when she was recently in Boston for shows. She describes the rooms and the artwork exhibited (which you can also see video of on her YouTube channel), with her favorite area being the iconic courtyard. Then in continuing to do the Lord's work, Kathleen mentions her official chowder tasting at Black Rose, the Chart House, and Legal Seafood in downtown Boston. UPDATE ON KATHLEEN'S QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen provides an update on the Queens, reporting that Queen Tanya has canceled the remainder of her 2021 Tour dates, stating that she needs to concentrate on rehabilitating her hip after her recent surgery. Tanya has also recorded a very cool song with RuPaul called “This Is Our Country,” which Kathleen recommends cranking UP and listening to. In super breaking bombshell news, Queen Stevie has delivered a TKO to former boyfriend and bandmate Lindsey Buckingham after his latest rant to the press challenging Stevie's involvement in his firing from Fleetwood Mac. Buckingham dissed all of his former bandmates in his tirades, which Kathleen advises is probably not the best way to approach a possible reunion. HIDDEN VALLEY HALLOWEEN: Kathleen is thrilled to read an announcement that Hidden Valley is releasing limited-edition Halloween treats for Ranch lovers, as well as a Ranch bottle costume. BALTO HOLMES AND MORE THERANOS TRIAL UNCERTAINTY: In another chapter of the saga of Elizabeth Holmes' lies, Kathleen reports to the Termites that in 2017, Vanity Fair reports that Holmes flew first-class across the U.S. to adopt a 9-week-old Siberian husky. She named him Balto after the world-famous sled dog that made a dangerous 600-mile journey in 1925, bearing medicine to save an entire village from diphtheria. Holmes went on to boast to people that Balto is a wolf, which his AKC paperwork states otherwise. Kathleen then goes into detail on the latest developments in the Theranos trial, including issues with jurors, the ways in which Holmes as altered her appearance to look more “maternal,” and the and exquisite home that she's residing in with her new baby and billionaire husband while on trial for fraud. RESURRECTING THE WOOLLY MAMMOTH: Kathleen reads an article outlining where scientists are making a pitch to resurrect the woolly mammoth from extinction. Colossal, a biosciences and genetics company, has raised $15 million to bring back the mammoth in an altered genetic form. The move could help restore the fragile Arctic tundra ecosystem, however, the ethical issues involved are creating a firestorm with the Genetics community. Kathleen asks listeners what they think of the campaign, and Paddles votes to proceed as long as the end result produces a mini mammoth (much like a baby goat). BITCOIN BECOMES LEGAL TENDER IN EL SALVADOR: As listeners of the Pubcast know, Kathleen holds mad love for cryptocurrency. She's thrilled to read an article announcing that El Salvador has adopted Bitcoin as an official currency alongside the US dollar. Supporters argue the move will make it cheaper and easier for migrants to send money home to El Salvador, which is important given such remittances account for over 24 percent of the country's gross domestic product, according to figures from the World Bank reported by CNBC. Baby steps for big gain states Mama T. RIPPER THE TALKING DUCK: Kathleen reads an article from New Zealand where a duck, who was raised in captivity in the late 1980s, was recorded uttering the phrase: “You bloody fool!” Scientists have analyzed the recordings, and have added musk ducks to a small number of animals able to imitate human speech.THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE IN THE USA: Kathleen is excited to announce that Money Magazine has evaluated big cities and small towns all over the US and has determined that the best place to live is Chanhassen, Minnesota. The magazine revealed its 35th annual "50 Best Places to Live" list last week, looking at metrics across nine different categories to create its definitive ranking for 2021-22. Situated southwest of the Twin Cities, Chanhassen made the #1 pick overall, with two additional cities in Minnesota making the top fifty as well. Skol!A $400B UTOPIAN DESERT CITY PLANNED: Kathleen reads an article where former Walmart president and billionaire Marc Lore has announced his plans for a $400 billion utopian city. Lore wants to capture the cleanliness of Tokyo, the diversity of New York, and the social services of Stockholm, and his vision will incorporate 5-million-people. He has appointed world-famous architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group to finalize the design and location, using scouting teams to review possible targets including Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Texas, and the Appalachian region. Stay tuned for UPDATES ☺THE CAROLINA MURDAUGH MURDERS: Kathleen's ID Channel love attracts her to the bizarre details surrounding the murder of the family of a South Carolina lawyer, Alex Murdaugh. News of the deaths of Paul Murdaugh, 22, and Maggie Murdaugh, 52, has led to national headlines, not only for the mystery surrounding their murders but for the ties to other death investigations in the Lowcountry area: Stephen Smith in 2015, Gloria Satterfield in 2018 and Mallory Beach in 2019. Kathleen reads through the timeline of events leading up to the recent arrest of Alex Murdaugh, after admitting to enlisting a hitman to end his own life in an effort to release an insurance policy for his remaining living son. Did you see “THE FIGHT” a few weeks ago? For all my podcast followers, I've got a SPECIAL INTERVIEW for you this week! In his first big interview since beating CONOR MCGREGOR, I caught up with DUSTIN POIRIER for a revealing talk about the controversial fight and a whole lot more. First, you will LEARN a ton about MENTAL Preparation, PERFORMANCE TRIGGERS, HOW to EXECUTE under PRESSURE etc etc On July 10, Dustin THE DIAMOND Poirier (28-6) and THE NOTORIOUS Conor McGregor (22-6) went toe-to-toe and elbow-to-elbow for the third time in their MMA careers. It was one of the most highly anticipated trilogy rematches ever after each man knocked out the other in their previous bouts. The fight racked up more than 1.8 MILLION PAY-PER-VIEWS worldwide, making it one of the most-watched MMA events ever. It was stopped on a TKO after McGregor suffered a nasty broken leg at the end of the first round, leaving open the possibility of another mega rematch. That's a fight every MMA fan wants to see, INCLUDING ME! Like they have different styles in the ring, Poirier and McGregor have completely different styles outside the ring. Dustin is not brash and outspoken. Instead, he QUIETLY AND CONFIDENTLY takes care of business. Widely known for his CLASS and HUMILITY, Dustin is also a dedicated HUSBAND, FATHER, and PHILANTHROPIST who the UFC recognized in 2020 for his charity work. Dustin is TOUGH …PHYSICALLY and MENTALLY. And, as the #1 ranked lightweight in the UFC, THE DIAMOND SHINES BRIGHTER than anyone else in the MMA universe right now. As a HUGE FAN OF DUSTIN AND MMA, I was excited to get to know him better during this latest podcast episode. Even if you're not into mixed martial arts, you'll find this interview FASCINATING. Although we dig into the McGregor fight, we also go deep on several other topics, including MENTAL TOUGHNESS, SELF-AWARENESS, and EMBRACING a heightened state of EMOTIONS every time Dustin prepares to fight. We also get into the need for continued PERSONAL GROWTH and what it means to be a ROLE MODEL as a highly visible public figure. And, in one of the most HONEST answers ever, Dustin reveals what he likes best and hates most about the current MMA fight game. LISTEN CLOSELY, and you can take what Dustin has to say about all of these things and use it to your advantage in your own daily battles.
