Ten of the country's most promising tech entrepreneurs have completed the first Furthr Foundry Accelerator Programme, Ireland's latest Pre-Seed Accelerator. The intensive 12-week programme concluded this week at the Guinness Enterprise Centre (GEC). On the final day, the participating start-ups took part in investor pitches and had one-on-one meetings with leading Irish VCs and Angel Investors. During these meetings, each start-up engaged in detailed discussions about their business plans, received valuable feedback, and sought investor perspectives. The ten high-potential start-ups who completed the Pre-Seed Accelerator Programme will now be seeking to raise a combined pre-seed capital investment of up to €4m. Winner of the 'Most Investable Start-Up' award announced on the Finale Day as voted for by the panel of investors, was Safely, founded by Jack Manning. Safely serves commercial vehicle fleets in the US, UK, and Ireland by offering a driver safety solution that has been estimated to reduce claims by over 50 per cent. In addition to being recognised as the 'Most Investable Start-Up', Safely also received a cash prize of €3k, sponsored by Growing Capital, the leading provider of pre-seed private investment in Ireland. Commenting on the Furthr Foundry Accelerator Programme and what the "Most Investable Start-Up' award recognition means for his company, Jack Manning, founder of Safely, said: "It's great to have won! It's validation that all the hard work to date is worth it. And it really does make me believe that I can grow this business, get the investment I need to really scale it to the level I want to scale it to. So, it's unbelievable validation, great to have won it. But the job's only really starting I suppose." Commenting on the programme and the engagement with the participating start-ups, Gianni Matera, founder of Growing Capital, said: "If the aim of this pre-seed accelerator is to prepare start-ups for their pre-seed round, then I believe it has been successful. Many start-ups are now ready to apply for a PSSF, and some are even poised for an HPSU round." The panel of investors attending the finale event included representatives from some of Ireland's most active Venture Capitalists and Angel Investors, including Sure Valley Ventures, Elkstone Private Partners, Growing Capital, Furthr VC, Delta Partners, Enterprise Ireland, Seedrs, ACT Venture Capital and Furthr Investor Network. Speaking to the Start-Ups on the Finale Day for the Furthr Foundry Accelerator Programme, Martin Murray, CEO at Furthr, said: "Today's final part of the Foundry Accelerator Programme culminating in the finale day, is hopefully only the beginning of our journey in supporting your growth and in realising your ambitions for your respective businesses. Our success will be measured by supporting our clients to become 'investor ready' to take on their first institutional investment and myself, along with our business and investor mentorship teams, look forward to working closely with you to make this happen." Devised by Furthr, the country's leading business innovation centre, in conjunction with the programme's key partners including Growing Capital, Microsoft's Founder Platform and the Guinness Enterprise Centre, the Furthr Foundry Accelerator Programme sets out to support, prepare and deliver 10 investor ready high potential start-ups who will take on pre-seed investment following their successful completion of the programme. Governor of New York State, Kathy Hochul, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing a formal partnership between Empire State Development, Guinness Enterprise Centre (GEC) and Furthr, to grow entrepreneurship and innovation opportunities between businesses in New York and Ireland. The announcement of the new partnership follows a visit to Dublin last week undertaken by Governor Hochul with meetings taking place with Furthr, a founding partner and the managing partner of the Guinness Enterprise Centre. The partnership, formalised in a MOU signed on Friday by Governor Hochul, recognises the entities' shared interest in collaborating on key technology and industry sectors and dedicates resources to creating innovative entrepreneurship opportunities in both New York and in Ireland. "While New York State and Ireland are geographically an ocean apart, we are united in the belief that we are stronger through the sharing of ideas and fostering innovation," Governor Hochul said. "This agreement between New York, the Guinness Enterprise Centre and Furthr, offers real opportunities and the potential for growth for Start-Ups in both economies and will build on our mutual strengths to advance the state's innovation economy." The MOU formalises a relationship between Empire State Development's Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR), the Guinness Enterprise Centre, and Furthr to accelerate technology-based commercialisation initiatives and spur economic activity. Commenting on the MOU signed between the respective parties, Martin Murray, CEO at Furthr said: "Under the agreement, each of the entities will make resources available to accelerate connections between New York and Ireland; share technical information, data, and analytics to inform best practices; and engage in outreach activities with other industry, government, and academic leaders to strengthen the partnership. Today's announcement really opens up a world of exciting opportunities for our Irish client companies to accelerate their growth directly into the US East Coast tech corridor while providing New York start-ups with a supportive landing location and ecosystem in Ireland." Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight said, "Teaming up with the GEC and Furthr allows us all to share ideas and tap into a wide array of resources and expertise that will unleash unlimited potential for our entrepreneurs and startups on both sides of the Atlantic. This collaboration will foster innovative ideas to grow key segments of our economy." The Guinness Enterprise Centre is Ireland's home for entrepreneurs, housing more than 150 companies representing a range of industries from medtech to digital gaming. The GEC's mission is to empower entrepreneurs to take on local or global markets. Through the GEC, New York-based companies will have an avenue to plug into the Ireland ecosystems and markets, including access to physical space, peer and mentorship networks, academic institutions, and market entry. At over 95,000 square feet in Dublin City Centre, the Guinness Centre supports founders by providing an ecosystem of supports and services, including access to international markets. The GEC is supported in this mission by Furthr whose objective is to provide game-changing impacts to founders through events, mentorship, accelerators, and access to funding. This partnership builds on the work of NYSTAR, which plays a critical role in spurring technology-based applied research and economic development in New York State; promoting national and international research collaboration and innovation; and leveraging New York's research expertise and funding with investments from the federal government, foundations, businesses, venture capital firms and other entities. NYSTAR will be able provide Irish start-up technology companies with physical space; access to capital; coaching; mentoring; networking connections; prototype development; and ac...
Photo by Kenny Hunter It's been a long time coming, this podcast featuring my good friend Martin Murray, who had spent a few weeks in the US for DIRTYFEST and the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey. We recorded this episode at Robbie Miranda's house in Huntington Beach while Robbie was hosting a BBQ, so expect a few guests chiming in with questions for Martin during the podcast. We delved into Martin's early days in the UK, including his 4th place finish at the Brighton World Championships in 1996 in the Junior category, which kickstarted his pro career alongside his brother Stephen. Martin shared insights from his time in the US, including his battle with Dylan Clayton for the UK Pro/Elite title, winning the 4x National Series, and landing a Dirt Magazine cover with Steve Peat, who he now works with at Peaty's. We also discussed some of the UK teams Martin and Stephen's family managed over the years, his time at 6th form college with Scott Beaumont, Martin's win at King of Dirt at the age of 13, trail riding, participation in Red Bull's Empire of Dirt, retirement from racing, and more about his current role at Peaty's. And, of course, we touched on how Martin's brother Stephen is doing these days since moving back to the UK after his injury almost 20 years ago, and more.

Vienna-based Waterdrop, best known for its pressed tablets that make flavored water, has ambitions to become a global beverage giant. The brand launched seven years ago in Austria and slowly expanded into other European markets like Germany and France. Now, the company has expanded in the U.S. and is working to become more of a household name. In 2021, Waterdrop said it brought in over $100 million in sales in Europe alone. "There are very few European innovations that make it in the U.S.," said founder and CEO Martin Murray. "Typically, the innovations come from the United States." But Waterdrop is trying to buck this trend -- and on this week's Modern Retail Podcast, Murray explained how. Waterdrop is Murray's big vision to make what he calls a "micro-drink" brand. That is, it's a beverage sans water -- meaning it has less of a carbon footprint and requires much less packaging and plastic. Murray wanted it to be cube shaped and he wanted it to be made with real plant and fruit extracts. For months, Murray flew between Europe and Asia meeting with technicians to try and figure out how to make such a product. "Out of 20 meetings, 19 told me it's stupid and it doesn't work," he said. But while in these meetings, Murray was able to get a crash course in product manufacturing and formulation. Through this, he was able to figure out how to ask the right questions and fine-tune his pitch. He finally hit on a manufacturing partner who agreed to give him an R&D budget to try and make the product. From there, Waterdrop was able to build a minimum viable product and bring it to market. Part of Murray's ethos has been to test and iterate. "To be honest, the prototype was really bad -- like, it didn't dissolve, it didn't taste [the right way], you couldn't open the packaging," he said. "But it was a prototype." "We started the company, we started the product then we iterated [while it was on] the market -- got a lot of feedback and since then have been really changing based on what consumers are telling us," he said. When it first launched, Waterdrop was predominately online. But in each country it launches in, it has been expanding more and more into retail -- both wholesale and its own stores. And while retail is becoming a much bigger part of its business, Murray isn't going to pull the plug on DTC anytime soon. "Our e-commerce will always exist because it allows us to test products very quickly," he said. For now, the focus is on continuing to expand as well as refining its product. "We started [like] a semi-broken Alcatel phone," Murray said. "Now we're looking at the iPhone 5 or 6 -- we went through a progression of iterations. We know how to build the iPhone 10+, but we're on a journey of continuously making those improvements."
