A call for New Zealand Rugby to protect referees more. The Horowhenua Kapiti Rugby Union has postponed fixtures this weekend after a referee was so seriously abused he had to be escorted to his car over safety fears. Last month, the union said in response to escalating abuse towards match officials – highlighted by a person threatening to stab a referee – that they would cancel all senior club games if behaviour didn't improve. Mike Hester, Participation Development Manager at NZ Rugby Union, joined Jason Pine to unpack the situation. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The head of a provincial referees assocation has said fewer people are putting their hands up to referee, with side line abuse escalating. Horowhenua Kapiti Rugby Football Union has cancelled all club and college games this weekend after a referee officiating a college match "was subjected to serious verbal abuse and physical intimidation". The union earlier this year warned it would consider cancelling games after someone threatened to stab a referee. Referee in Horewhenua Kapiti and secretary for Horowhenua-Kapiti Rugby Referees Association Quentin Hathaway spoke to Lisa Owen.
Ben O'Keeffe is one of New Zealand's leading rugby union referees, and joins Mark Leishman to talk about inappropriate behaviour from the sidelines.
Concerns have been raised after Horowhenua-Kāpiti Rugby Union cancelled a series of Saturday matches. The provincial union made the call after the abuse of a referee at last Saturday's game between Kapiti College and Mana College, which saw him escorted to his car out of safety fears. NZ Rugby's Mike Hester says there was abuse from spectators that prompted the match getting called off. "A lot of these things can happen on the sideline with chat from spectators to coaches and the like. The details of it - again, it depends on who you talk to - but certainly, it was sufficient enough that the referee had to make a decision." Munaf Manji and Mackenzie Rivers break down NBA Game 7. Best bets as always. The podcast episode of RJ Bell's Dream Preview hosted by Munaf Manji and Mackenzie Rivers dives into the upcoming NBA Finals Game 7 between the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder, focusing on Game 6 recap, player and team statistics, Game 7 historical trends, and predictions. Munaf begins by acknowledging the unexpected extension to Game 7, joking that rapper Drake may be responsible after placing a massive bet on the Thunder in Game 6. Mackenzie reflects on his incorrect prediction and credits Indiana's resilience, noting they've consistently defied expectations. In Game 6, the Pacers delivered a balanced team performance. Tyrese Halliburton, playing through injury, contributed 14 points and 5 assists in 23 minutes. Four starters reached double figures, while Obi Toppin scored 20 off the bench. TJ McConnell added 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. The Thunder, in contrast, had a dismal shooting night, hitting only 8 of 30 from three-point range, with starters going 1 for 13. They managed just 91 points, their lowest of the season. Defensively, the Pacers adjusted from full-court pressure in Game 4 to a more strategic, trap-heavy defense in Game 6. Mackenzie compares McConnell's impact to J.J. Barea in 2011, praising Rick Carlisle's coaching and noting that he's achieved more with less than most NBA coaches. Munaf suggests Carlisle's legacy could be cemented with a second improbable championship, citing his 2011 win over Miami's Big Three. Looking at Game 7, the Thunder are favored by 7.5 points with a total of 214.5. Historical trends support a close contest: since 2002, 62% of Game 7s have gone under the total, with average victory margins at just 6.9 points. Of the past ten NBA Finals Game 7s, only one had a margin over 7.5. Munaf notes that OKC's strong home record and MVP-caliber season from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA) bring added pressure, while Indiana is seen as playing with house money. Mackenzie believes the Thunder's legacy burden may weigh heavier on SGA than any player, contrasting Halliburton's low-risk, high-reward scenario. Referee influence, especially the likely assignment of Scott Foster, could shape the game. Foster is known for calling more fouls and previously officiated two Finals Game 7s, including the 2010 Celtics-Lakers game where LA shot 37 free throws. Munaf warns that if Foster is officiating, foul counts may spike. Both hosts back the Pacers +7.5 as their best bet. They emphasize Indiana's ability to stay within striking distance, citing the last four Finals teams that forced Game 7s after trailing 3–2 all won the title. Regarding props, Munaf favors Pascal Siakam's rebound over (7.5), noting consistent double-digit boards and high minutes. SGA and Caruso are tipped to exceed 2.5 combined steals and blocks, given the high-pressure context. Mackenzie leans under on Halliburton's 15.5 point line, which is near season-low, but suggests parlaying Halliburton overs with a Pacers win if expecting an upset. In closing, the hosts predict a tight, gritty Game 7 in line with NBA history. Both expect Indiana to cover and potentially win, citing momentum, strategic flexibility, and psychological freedom versus the high stakes confronting OKC. Learn more about your ad choices. Sporting KC finally returned to the friendly confines of Children's Mercy Park on Saturday Night, but were unable to give the fans a victory as they fell to FC Dallas 4-2. SKC was able to take the early lead again in this one off of a pretty curling shot from the top of the box by Shapi Suleymanov, but in a familiar refrain the team was unable to maintain their defensive posture in central midfield, and FC Dallas used it to pull them out of shape prior to a nice crossed ball from Shaq Moore onto the foot of Petar Musa equalized. Then things got a bit weird, as the referee made a couple tight calls against Sporting KC leading to a penalty for Lucho Acosta, and an early trip to the showers for Khiry Shelton as Sporting had to play down a man for the last half hour plus stoppage time while already down 2-1 on the score sheet. I think it is fair to credit SKC with the fact that they did still try pretty aggressively to attack Dallas' goal even with the man disadvantage, but that led to two more fairly simple finishes for Bernard Kamungo and Lucho Acosta, meaning that outside of a late consolation goal from Santi Munoz, that SKC would be heading into this 10 day break having two straight losses after having seeming to have somewhat righted the ship prior to that..The USMNT drama continued last week with Christian Pulisic and Mauricio Pochettino trading public barbs, before they thoroughly dismantled a Trinidad and Tobago team that seemed mostly disinterested in even attempting to play in their Gold Cup opener. That wasn't the only fun performance this weekend though, as the Kansas City Current continued their dominance at the top of the league while still missing several key players. They did let Louisville back into this one late but then Temwa did what Temwa does and iced it after a nice ball from Claire Hutton sent her running down the flank and Temwa did the rest.
Adam Hurrey is joined on the Adjudication Panel by Charlie Eccleshare and David Walker. On the agenda: some early Club World Cup observations (including DAZN's motley crew of pundits and co-commentators), an unexpected Nigel Farage-based analogy, barely-audible Andy Hinchcliffe co-commentary in Ukrainian dance music, Kyle Walker's Turkish Super Lig credentials, a double header of football references in audiobooks and the Lampard & Gerrard of darts. Meanwhile, the panel examine the concept of "showing too much of the ball to the defender" and enjoy the launch material for next season's referee kits. In this episode of Whistle Talk, host Mike D the Referee is joined by special guest Daniel Chamberlin to break down Rule 5 of the NFHS Football Rule Book: Series of Downs, Number of Down, and Team Possessions After Penalty. What Is Rule 5?Rule 5 governs the heartbeat of every football game: the series of downs. Here's what you'll learn:Each team in possession of the ball is granted a series of four downs to advance the ball at least 10 yards from where the series begins. If the team fails to advance the required yardage, possession goes to the opponent. The rule also covers what happens after penalties, how downs are counted, and the procedures that keep the game moving fairly and efficiently. Why Rule 5 MattersUnderstanding Rule 5 is essential for everyone on the field and the sidelines:Players need to know how many opportunities they have to move the chains and what happens if they don't.Coaches must master the rule to make strategic decisions, manage the clock, and guide their teams effectively. Teaching the rules is part of building character and sportsmanship in athletes.Officials are tasked with enforcing these procedures accurately, ensuring fair play and minimizing confusion. Proper knowledge of Rule 5 helps avoid unnecessary disputes and keeps the game flowing smoothly. As the NFHS emphasizes, all participants—players, coaches, and officials—share responsibility for upholding the rules and the spirit of the game. What to Expect in the EpisodeMike D and Daniel Chamberlin will:Break down the language and intent of Rule 5.Share real-world scenarios where understanding the series of downs can change the outcome of a game.Offer tips for coaches and players to avoid common pitfalls.Discuss how officials communicate and enforce these rules on Friday nights.Whether you're a coach designing your next drive, a player fighting for that crucial first down, or an official keeping order on the field, this episode will give you the insights you need to master the basics and elevate your football IQ.Where to ListenCatch this episode and more on Whistle Talk — available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. Episode Preview: Breaking Down Rule 4 – Ball In Play, Dead Ball, and Out of BoundsThis week, Daniel and Mike D the Referee take listeners inside one of the most critical—and often misunderstood—sections of the NFHS football rule book: Rule 4. If you've ever wondered exactly when a play starts, when it ends, or how out-of-bounds rulings really work, this episode is for you. What's Inside Rule 4?Putting the Ball in Play:Daniel and Mike explain the different ways a ball is put in play: by kickoff (to start each half or after a score), by free kick (after a safety or fair catch), or by snap when a free kick isn't specified. They'll clarify why the snap or free kick must always happen between the hash marks, and what happens if a snap or kick is attempted before the ball is ready for play—a common source of delay of game penalties. When is the Ball Dead? The duo discusses the many ways a ball becomes dead: when a runner goes out of bounds, forward progress is stopped, or any part of a player's body (other than hand or foot) touches the ground—with key exceptions for place-kick holders. They'll highlight situations like incomplete passes, kicks breaking the plane of the goal line, and even rare cases like a helmet or prosthetic limb coming off the runner.Inadvertent Whistles and Their Consequences:Every official dreads the inadvertent whistle. Daniel and Mike break down what happens when it occurs—whether the ball is in flight, loose, or in a player's possession—and the options available to teams, including replaying the down or taking the result of the play at the spot the whistle blew. They'll also explain how fouls are handled if they occur before an inadvertent whistle.Spotting the Ball—Out of Bounds and Inbounds:Listeners will learn how officials determine the exact spot for the next play, whether the ball goes out of bounds, is touched by a player out of bounds, or a runner steps out. Special attention is given to the “foremost point” rule and how the goal line and pylons affect rulings like safeties, touchbacks, and field goals.Coach's Choice:Mike shares how, in certain situations (tries, kickoffs, after safeties, fair catches, touchbacks, and overtime), the offense can choose where between the hash marks to spot the ball—an often-overlooked strategic option. Why Listen? With real-life scenarios, practical tips for coaches and officials, and clear explanations of the rules, this episode is essential for anyone who wants to understand the heartbeat of high school football. Daniel and Mike's discussion will help you see the game through the eyes of those who enforce and teach the rules—making you a smarter fan, coach, or official.“The ball is dead by rule, not by the whistle. The whistle only indicates what's already happened.”Don't miss this deep dive into Rule 4—tune in and get ready to see high school football in a whole new way!
