What really makes a football play end? Is it the whistle—or something else?In this episode of Whistle Talk, Mike D the Referee is joined once again by Coach Chip Seagle and Daniel Chamberlain for a detailed breakdown of NFHS Rule 4: The Ball in Play, Dead Ball, Out of Bounds, and Inadvertent Whistles. The crew dives into some of the most misunderstood concepts in football officiating, including forward progress, dead-ball mechanics, spotting the football, fair catches, kick plays, and what happens when an official accidentally sounds the whistle while the ball is still live.Along the way, the guys share real-life officiating and coaching stories, discuss how these rules impact strategy on Friday nights, and explain why every coach should understand the rules as well as the officials enforcing them.Plus, Daniel drops an interesting update about potentially joining the officiating ranks this season, while Coach Chip continues his mission of "weaponizing the rule book" to gain every possible advantage for his team.Whether you're a coach, player, official, or football fan, this episode will help you better understand one of the most important sections of the NFHS Football Rule Book.

You can love swimming and still feel intimidated by the rulebook, the whistles, and the idea of disqualifying someone. That hesitation is exactly why we wanted an on-deck conversation with Chet Goudy, a USA Swimming deck referee, Masters swimmer, former college breaststroker, and former pro triathlete. He walks us through what a deck ref actually does, what it feels like to run a session from the pool deck, and why meets are always desperate for more well-trained officials. We also get personal about how people find their way back to the water. Chet shares the detour he took away from swimming in high school, the grind of returning for college, and the kind of “legendary” training that rewards durable athletes. From there we jump into Masters swimming culture with the Annapolis Breakfast Club, where 4,000-yard mornings are normal and “Fitness February” means 5,000 a day to build toward open water challenges like the Chesapeake Bay Swim. Then we zoom out to endurance sport and mindset. Chet explains how a coach transformed his triathlon training by making every session purposeful, controlled, and measurable, leading to a pro card and later a 13-week comeback plan to win a race after years away. If you're a swim parent, a Masters swimmer, or someone curious about volunteering at swim meets, you'll leave with clear next steps and a fresh view of what it means to support the sport.• deck referee responsibilities and how officiating is the best seat• becoming an official through apprenticeship and on-deck mentoring• why disqualifications help swimmers learn rather than punish them• the social side of officiating and why more officials make meets better• Masters at the Annapolis Breakfast Club with 4,000 yard workouts• preparing for open water goals like the Chesapeake Bay Swim• “train on purpose” lessons from triathlon coaching and earning a pro cardSubscribe for more conversations that help you live well and swim well, share this with a swim friend, and leave us a review if it helped you see the pool deck in a new way.Email us at HELLO@ChampionsMojo.com. The 2026 World Cup kicked off last night in Mexico, after a series of controversies in the lead up, including over visas for foreign teams, fans, media and officials hoping to go to the host countries: US, Canada and Mexico. The latest scandal involves FIFA dropping Somali referee Omar Artan, after the US refused him entry. FIFA‘s president Gianni Infantino said “we don't control everything”, and asked critics to ‘chill'. US Customs and Borders protection said in a statement that “derogatory information, including association with suspected members of terror organisations” was discovered after Omar Artan landed at Miami International Airport to attend the tournament. Artan says he told border officials he knows nothing about the Somali militant group Al Shabab. Today, we speak to Charles Gitonga, senior journalist and host of the BBC's Focus on Africa podcast, about how Africans are reacting to the news, and whether the controversies will have long-term consequences for US-Africa relations.Producers: Sam Chantarasak and Cat Farnsworth Executive producer: Bridget Harney Video editor: Matt Pintus Mix: Travis Evans Senior News Editor: China CollinsPhoto: Somali referee Omar Artan. Send us Fan MailMost dads do not need another hack. We need a standard we can actually live by when we are tired, stressed, and tempted to check out. That's why this conversation with Tommy Short hits so hard. Tommy is a former NCAA Division I basketball referee and the author of The Call I Almost Missed, and he joins me to talk about what real leadership looks like at home, not under arena lights. We start with youth sports and the sideline behavior that steals the best lessons from kids. Tommy shares what he saw for years as an official, why you should never expect a perfect whistle, and how three honest words can disarm conflict fast: “I missed it.” From there, we get personal: why he walked away from officiating so he could be fully present as a dad, and the simple routines that shape his daughters' character, like daily kindness reflections and making mistakes safe to admit. Then we dig into the tools Tommy is known for: Do Boring Better, Own Your Three Foot Circle, and his “86” personal standard built from missing the NBA. We talk about empathy, authenticity, curiosity, humility, and how “each day is the first day” becomes a reset button for fathers, husbands, and leaders. Finally, Tommy tells the story behind going a full year without a cell phone, what it revealed about performative living, and how to avoid the kind of regret that shows up years too late. The Go Radio Football Show: May 15th, 2026 with Scottish Gas. PLAY and HIT SUBSCRIBE, and NEVER miss an episode! Paul Cooney, Peter Grant and Mark Guidi look ahead to the season decider and discuss the biggest stories hitting the headline in Scottish Football today. A fiery, emotionally charged episode that blends football analysis with wider cultural reflection, as the panel dissects a week where the sport veered dangerously from debate into outrage. At its core, the episode explores the fallout from a controversial VAR penalty decision and the spiralling reaction across media, punditry, and fans—culminating in serious safety concerns for match officials. While examining the breakdown of trust in refereeing and the role of sensational narratives, the conversation shifts sharply to the footballing reality: a dramatic, last-day title decider between Celtic and Hearts. The panel balances emotion with perspective, repeatedly stressing that championships are earned over a season—not decided by one moment. Highlights ⚠️ Referee safety concerns after backlash over VAR decision escalate dramatically
Send us Fan MailThe fastest way to lose a new referee is to certify them online and then throw them into the deep end on a busy weekend. We start with a few big updates from my world, including our first Dr. Tom Gerson Pops Memorial Scholarships for referees and why telling those stories every year matters to me and my family. Then I'm joined by Carlos Ledesma, a Northern California assigner, director of referees, and certified mentor who has quietly built what a lot of leagues are missing: a repeatable system to recruit, train, develop, and retain soccer referees. Carlos breaks down how he sells refereeing to 13 and 14-year-olds, why shadowing works in real games, and how club scrimmages can become a low-pressure training ground where new officials learn mechanics, positioning, pregame routines, and confidence before the first “real” assignment. We also get practical about referee safety and retention: sideline seating policies that keep spectators off the assistant referee's back, strict zero tolerance expectations, and the underrated step of communicating with referees after a referee abuse report so they know action was taken. If you're an assigner, club leader, coach, or referee mentor trying to solve the referee shortage with better training instead of wishful thinking, you'll leave with a model you can copy.Subscribe for more behind-the-scenes referee conversations, share this with your local club, and leave a review so more officials and assigners can find the show.Support the show
In this episode, Mike D the Referee and Daniel break down Rule 2 of the 2026 NFHS Football Rule Book, the section that defines the language of the game. They explain why Rule 2 matters so much for officials, coaches, and players, and how a strong understanding of definitions helps make better decisions on the field. The conversation focuses on the idea that in football, the words in the rule book shape how every play is interpreted.
An Olathe native will officiate some of the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches. We'll learn what it took to land a spot on the referee crew and how he's preparing for the massive event.
Chelsea ended a miserable run of six straight Premier League defeats with a gutsy, hard-fought draw at Anfield — and for the first time in what feels like months, Simon and Manny have something genuinely positive to say about a Chelsea performance away from home. This was not vintage Chelsea. But it was effort, organisation, and belief, and right now that feels like a revolution.Levi Colwill's return is the story of the episode. The hosts are emphatic — this is the player Chelsea have been missing, the defensive leader this squad desperately needs, and potentially the most important figure in whatever rebuild comes this summer. Simon and Manny make the case that Colwill is not just a good player but the kind of character and quality that should be the foundation of the next era at Stamford Bridge. When he plays, Chelsea look like a different team. The numbers do not lie and neither do the hosts. But the mood darkens quickly when the conversation turns to the officials. Joao Pedro was denied a stone-cold penalty in a decision that left everyone associated with Chelsea furious, and Simon and Manny use it as the launchpad for a broader and increasingly urgent conversation about the state of Premier League refereeing. The Arsenal vs West Ham game provided yet more evidence of staggering inconsistency at best and something far more troubling at worst. The lack of accountability in officiating is a scandal hiding in plain sight and this episode does not shy away from saying so.Then the big one. The FA Cup Final against Manchester City. Chelsea as underdogs, a chance to silence every critic, and an opportunity to salvage something genuinely meaningful from a campaign that has been almost relentlessly grim. Simon and Manny dare to dream — can Chelsea pull off one of the great FA Cup Final upsets and send their supporters home with a trophy?

It's Friday and the Big Shot Bob crew is back with Episode 131 of Shoot Around — the weekly bonus show where Robert Horry, Rob Jenners, and B-Dog Brandon Harper dig into the questions YOU send in and whatever's on their minds. This week kicks off with a debate born from the new Michael Jackson biopic hitting theaters: Start, Bench, Cut — MJ era edition. The Thriller era (1982–85), the Bad era (1987–89), and the Dangerous era (1991–94) are all on the table. Which era do you start? Which do you bench? Which do you cut? The guys break down their picks, argue over the greatest MJ music videos of all time (Smooth Criminal vs. Remember the Time), debate whether Chris Tucker was actually IN Smooth Criminal (he wasn't), and Harper goes deep on the Ghost mini-movie that almost nobody's seen. The verdict? Unanimous love for Thriller, but serious disagreement on whether Bad or Dangerous gets the bench. Then the guys jump into the all-time greatest NBA coaches debate, sparked by Pat Riley making it clear at 81 years old that he has zero plans to retire or step aside. Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Gregg Popovich, Don Nelson, Lenny Wilkins, Red Auerbach — who makes the cut? Robert Horry gives a unique firsthand perspective on Phil Jackson, including the detail that Phil literally never spoke to him during their championship runs together. There's also the Del Harris comparison — same roster, completely different results — and what that says about coaching being as much about managing personalities as drawing up plays. A Reddit user's anti-tanking beer pricing proposal gets a quick airing, and then the crew weighs in on Diego Pavia going undrafted after representing himself at the NFL Draft — no agent, no deal. Robert Horry reflects on firing his own agent in 2001 and what he missed out on off the court despite winning six championships, and the guys debate whether being your own representative ever actually works when you're already fighting an uphill battle. To close things out, a fan question about the best superhero shows ever made opens up a great conversation about Invincible (currently must-watch TV), The Boys, Smallville, The Flash, Dragon Ball Z, the upcoming Mortal Kombat film, and a He-Man movie trip that Robert Horry is already planning with his son. Plus — the case for a live-action Thundercats reboot that the world is clearly not ready for.
