Joe Biden Say We Did It

President Joe Biden strode into the White House four years ago with a foreign policy agenda that put repairing alliances strained by four years of Republican Donald Trump's “America First” worldview front and center. The one-term Democrat took office in the throes of the worst global pandemic in a century and his plans were quickly stress-tested by a series of complicated international crises: the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, and Hamas' brutal 2023 attack on Israel that triggered the ongoing war in the Middle East. HAITI  Turning to Haiti. Yesterday – January 12th – marked 15 years since the devastating earthquake claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.  The Secretary-General remembers the victims of the earthquake and continues to honour their legacy through the United Nations' work in the country. He also paid tribute to the 102 colleagues, our own colleagues, who died on that day, including the head of the Mission at the time, Mr. Hédi Annabi, and one of our dear colleagues who used to work on the documents counter, Alexandra Duguay, who is remembered by her bright smile and efficient work. An estimated three million people as you know, were impacted by the earthquake, which led to severe humanitarian, protection, health, displacement, and infrastructural challenges for Haiti, some of which are still present today.  Yesterday, in Haiti, the United Nations held a ceremony in Port-au-Prince to honour the victims of the earthquake and our colleagues. In a statement, the head of the UN political office in Haiti, Maria Isabel Salvador, expressed her solidarity with all those whose lives continue to be impacted by this tragedy. She also saluted the determination and resilience of the Haitian people, who responded with courage in the aftermath of the earthquake, and she also, of course, reaffirmed the UN's commitment to continue working alongside the Haitian authorities and people to build a better future for the country. UKRAINE  The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, is in Ukraine this week to meet with people impacted by the hostilities, to discuss how we can further cooperate with Ukrainian authorities, and engage with our humanitarian partners on the ground.  Yesterday, in Zaporizhzhia, Mr. Fletcher held talks with authorities. He visited the site where last month a missile hit a medical clinic, totally destroying the facility and causing civilian casualties. He also visited an underground school, built in just 6 months, which will educate 1,000 children every day.   Also yesterday, Mr. Fletcher was in Dnipro, where he visited a collective site for displaced people. Today, he travelled to the frontline area of the Donetsk region, where he commended the work of local first responders and NGOs. Mr. Fletcher saw how communities remaining in the area are supported by aid organizations and how evacuees receive assistance at a transit centre in the city of Pavlohrad, which is in Dnipro.   Tomorrow, Mr. Fletcher will visit Kharkiv, and on Thursday, he and the head of UNHCR, Filippo Grandi, will launch this year's humanitarian and refugee response plans for Ukraine and the region. Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Grandi will jointly speak to the press from Kyiv just before the plan is launched. In Ottawa, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health Yasir Naqvi announces an investment of $1.3 million to Operation Come Home for a program that supports homeless youth who are at risk of harms from substance use. He is joined by John Heckbert (executive director) and Katie Price (coordinator) of Operation Come Home.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/policy-and-rights--3339563/support.

58: Empowering Youth in the Kitchen with FoodWorks Ottawa

Sometimes the stories we want to share through AnthroDish are bigger that just one person's perspective. We've been working to create more thematically based narrative-style episodes, using multiple interviews to explore how different folks look at the same topic. In this way, we’re able to get a bigger picture story about the ways in which food can be used as a tool for powerful social moments and conversations.  Today we are sharing the story of FoodWorks, and what this program is doing to empower youth in the kitchen. FoodWorks is a social enterprise launched by Operation Come Home in 2016, in cooperation with Causeway Work Centre in Ottawa, Canada. The goal of FoodWorks is to provide meaningful work opportunities to youth while offering healthy meals to those who may need it. It began as a way to bridge the gap between youth and seniors in Ottawa through a meal delivery service, but the program has grown exponentially to better suit Ottawa’s food culture and needs through meal delivery programs that are open to all residents, while also providing catering services for events and restaurants. The program hires youth who are recruited from Operation Come Home, and helps them develop their culinary skills with a world-class chef, Bruce Wood. All proceeds go to supporting Operation come Home’s mission of preventing homeless youth from becoming homeless adults.    I spoke with four people who all work with FoodWorks or Operation Come Home in varied ways: Chef Bruce Wood, Eric Bollman, Mandi Lunan, and Katie Sanders. After learning about the program from Eric, I knew that it would be important to get different perspectives and voices on the show, given that their enterprise is so rooted in creating strong communities and empowering youth -- an individual interview just wouldn't cut it! I am excited to share the final product today with you, complete with some fun soundscape play woven throughout the narrative. In the fourth episode of Lagered Tales our co-founder and CEO at Beau’s, Steve Beauchesne, talks to Ren Navarro, founder of Beer.Diversity about her work addressing the lack of diversity in the Canadian craft beer industry.    In the episode’s second feature, one of our producers, Patrick, sits down with Ottawa-based charitable organization, Operation Come Home’s executive director, Elspeth McKay, and Steve (separately) as they each recount the (exciting) story of having a law changed in Ontario in 2011, in the name of social enterprise!   In our third feature, Eddy Earwigg sits down with Louise Sproule, the editor and publisher of The Review, a local newspaper in Vankleek Hill. They discuss the challenges of being the first female publisher at a small-town paper, how Vankleek Hill has changed since Beau’s arrived, and much more -- expect the unexpected.    Finally, Steve joins the Toronto-based writer and beer expert Crystal Luxmore to discuss her favourite holiday beers.    Lagered Tales is a bi-weekly check-in from your friends at the employee-owned Canadian craft brewery Beau’s. Through interviews, storytelling and exciting regular features, we'll explore the intersecting worlds of craft beer, food, music, community and culture — and we’ll just generally talk to great people doing great things.   Follow us on Instagram and Twitter @beausallnatural, on Facebook @BeausBrewery. Shlomo is one of my favourite people. I first met him four years ago, as we were preparing to do the 24 Hours Of Homelessness event for Operation Come Home. He had just come from sleeping in a parking garage after what had proved to be the coldest night of the entire year. Much like tonight's -35. Homeless, fighting mental illness, and addicted, Shlomo was lost. Today, he's found. He went through Operation Come Home's variety of programs, and came out the other side clean and sober, employed, housed, and ready to really do something. That something was helping Operation Come Home with this year's 24 Hours of Homelessness and our reality campaign. He has a campaign going where he has convinced Ottawa mayor Jim Watson to get a pie in the face if Shlomo is able to raise $10,000 for OCH. To read Shlomo's full story, and donate to his campaign, go to www.pieourmayor.ca. In this podcast, we talk Criminal Minds and mental illness, the theft of toilet paper, avoiding fisticuffs and how the mayor can get out of this pie-in-the-face bet. (Hint: it involves core funding.) Take a listen, please - get to know this terrific kid the way I know him, and you'll be cheering for him and his initiative until it's done. https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/operation-come-home/campaign/theottawapiechallenge/
