Chad breaks down the real path to growth in this industry: why the helper position is the most underrated opportunity in any shop, how attitude and work ethic matter more than your cert, and why he's now setting his sights on the CWI. He also gets candid about where he came from, how welding changed his life, and the mindset shift that made all the difference. If you're early in your career, thinking about the CWI, or just need a shot of motivation — this one's for you. Topics covered: Starting as a shop helper · Growing into a foreman role · What Chad looks for when hiring · Pursuing the CWI exam · Running a structural solar canopy shop · Mindset, health, and building a life you love in the trades.

144. Kellie Doucette, Unexpected Journey: Pink Sand Beaches to New Jersey Politics

The 92 Report

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2025 50:23

Show Notes: Kellie Doucette describes her journey as zigs and zags, with three distinct chunks defined by her location: Northern Virginia, Bermuda, and New Jersey. She worked for a small health policy consulting firm called the Lewin Group in Northern Virginia, DC, where she met her future husband, John Doucette. A 13-Year Stint in Bermuda Kellie, an actuary, began her career in the Bermuda market after taking the actuarial exams. She and her husband moved to Bermuda in 1996, and they enjoyed the adventure of visiting family on the East Coast and raising their children there. The reinsurance industry in Bermuda was growing rapidly, and Kellie joined a life and health group company and continued taking the actuarial exams. Their 13-year stint in Bermuda provided innovative career opportunities, working with clients and devising innovative ways to achieve objectives. Pursuing a Path in Politics However, Kellie left her job in 2008 to pursue a different path. She worked remotely for a few years, but she started feeling like she needed a change.  In 2016, she became unhappy with the trajectory of national politics and decided to become more involved in politics. She started volunteering for local government office campaigns and met a candidate running in her congressional district during the 2018 midterms who aimed to flip a seat from red to blue. During the midterms, Kellie lived in a swing district, which could potentially flip the seat.  Kellie found herself in the midst of New Jersey politics. She was fortunate to work with a candidate, Mikie Sherrill, who won a congressional race and is now running for governor in New Jersey.  Establishing a District Office Kellie worked to establish a district office for Mikie, which spanned over six years. As the district director, Kellie aimed to build bridges between the district and the mayors, ensuring they served the entire district, not just the blue parts. She prioritized building trust and respecting the fact that they were there for everyone, learning from the mayors, local electives, and community stakeholders. Kellie emphasizes the importance of showing up everywhere and respecting that it would take time to build trust with the community. Her experience highlights the importance of being genuine and understanding the needs of the community. Working Across Party Lines Kellie shares her experience working with a congressional office during a divisive time. The office was open to serving constituents and addressing issues that were not always seen in government. She found it rewarding to work with local officials and local officials across party lines to tackle various issues, such as flooding, public safety, and mental health. Since leaving the congressional office, Kellie continues to do what she can to support Mikie in her run for Governor. She has also been involved in consulting work for a county college and serves on two boards  - as vice chair of the board of her high school and on the board of Ibis Reproductive Health, a non-profit run by our classmate Kelly Blanchard. Kellie is excited to see what comes next in her journey!  The Challenges of a Congressional Office The conversation turns to Congress members setting up and running their offices, with a set budget that can be used in various ways due to different priorities and districts. New Jersey is a densely populated state, and in Kellie's district they could have a single district office serving everyone. A district in a western state, for example, may have to budget differently to accommodate multiple offices. Kellie mentions the importance of having support of more established congressional offices in New Jersey when they were setting up and the choice in Mikie's office to have two district directors to ensure mayors in their 54 towns had a senior contact in the office. Kellie also discusses the challenges of setting up a congressional office in a flipped district where you do not get as much cooperation from the prior office. She acknowledges the need for strong communication and organization and stresses the importance of a well-organized and efficient office environment. She goes on to share how the district office works and how the different agencies work. Outreach During the August District Work Period Kellie talks about her experiences with the August district work period, which is a time for organizing outreach for the Congresswoman in the district. She highlights how much she enjoyed learning about the strong manufacturing economy and pharma industry in the district, as well as the innovative work happening in various sectors. How important it was to bring local electeds and colleges into the conversations to support these companies and ensure they have the workforce pipeline and education system in place to attract talent. She talks about the role of the bipartisan group of mayors, known as The Strike Force and how it has assembled to deal with the issue of flooding in the area. Influential Harvard Professors and Courses Kellie, a former government major, transitioned to economics as a better fit for her. She took Public Sector Economics under Larry Summers, which highlighted the integration of her policy and economic interests. She appreciates the breadth of classes and the opportunity to learn from different perspectives. She believes that the best learning experience was managing the football team at Harvard. What happens when parenting meets the digital age? In this episode, Nicki Reisberg sits down with family therapist Joanne Doucette to unpack the growing mental health challenges families face—especially when screens, gaming, and social media are part of everyday life. With over 25 years of experience supporting parents and kids, Joanne shares what she's seeing on the front lines: rising anxiety, disconnection, and confusion around how to set tech boundaries that actually stick. Together, Nicki and Joanne explore why open, honest conversations matter more than ever—especially when it comes to tough topics like online content, gaming habits, and screen time battles at home. They dive into real-life parenting struggles, like what to do when you're not on the same page with your partner, how to stay connected to your kids in a digital world, and why community support is key when navigating this new tech terrain. This is a powerful conversation for anyone who's ever wondered: Am I doing enough? Am I doing it right? (Spoiler: You're not alone.)Connect with Joanne here.Joanne Doucette is a therapist, speaker, and advocate for family mental health, with 25 years of experience helping children, teens, and their parents navigate life's toughest challenges. As a dedicated social worker, she has worked in inpatient mental health and palliative care at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Now in private practice, she focuses on equipping parents in the community with the tools and confidence to support children coping with anxiety, depression, grief, and neurodivergence.Joanne believes that parents are their child's most powerful resource. Rooted in a no-blame, deeply compassionate approach, she helps families strengthen connection, resilience, and healing. She challenges the societal forces that undermine parent-child relationships—such as the unregulated influence of technology—advocating for changes that protect children's well-being. Through therapy, workshops, and community education, she empowers parents to navigate these pressures while staying grounded in what matters most: their connection with their child. As both a therapist and a mother of two, with 20 years of parenting experience, Joanne understands firsthand the challenges families face. She is dedicated to ensuring parents feel supported, not judged, and offers hope, practical strategies, and a path forward—helping families create a healthier, more connected future at home and in their communities.

Madison Doucette is a 2x World Champion with Team USA and a current pro lacrosse player for the New York Charging. She recently set a record in sixes lacrosse for the most saves made in a championship series game and holds the saves per game record at both Northwestern and Johns Hopkins, where she played collegiately. However, her first love was hockey, and her father was her coach. While her dad expected a lot from all his players, he made sure he was composed, consistent and always checked in. As such, Madison never dreaded the ride home and embodies many of her father's traits in own athletic career. Even though she is the player to represent the US in all three disciplines of lacrosse, which demands variability, she created a process that she can replicate and a mindset that allows her to believe that “the only thing going in the net is her.” As a currently student manager, she has combined her father's coaching style with her experience as a player to take the perspective and approach of consistency, transparence and gratitude. As she plainly states, “I am just here for the vibes!” @_madisondoucette

Generations of social scientists and historians have argued that the escape from empire and consequent fragmentation of power - across and within polities - was a necessary condition for the European development of the modern territorial state, modern representative democracy, and modern levels of prosperity. The Catholic Church and European State Formation, AD 1000-1500 (Oxford UP, 2022) inserts the Catholic Church as the main engine of this persistent international and domestic power pluralism, which has moulded European state-formation for almost a millennium. The 'crisis of church and state' that began in the second half of the eleventh century is argued here as having fundamentally reshaped European patterns of state formation and regime change. It did so by doing away with the norm in historical societies - sacral monarchy - and by consolidating the two great balancing acts European state builders have been engaged in since the eleventh century: against strong social groups and against each other. The book traces the roots of this crisis to a large-scale breakdown of public authority in the Latin West, which began in the ninth century, and which at one and the same time incentivised and permitted a religious reform movement to radically transform the Catholic Church in the period from the late tenth century onwards. Drawing on a unique dataset of towns, parliaments, and ecclesiastical institutions such as bishoprics and monasteries, the book documents how this church reform movement was crucial for the development and spread of self-government (the internal balancing act) and the weakening of the Holy Roman Empire (the external balancing act) in the period AD 1000-1500. Jørgen Møller, Professor, Department of Political Science, Aarhus University, and Jonathan Stavnskær Doucette, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Aarhus University Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Sarah Doucette - Uncovering The TruthAugust 14This memoir is an inspirational yet harrowing story of a domestic violence victim's search for the truth about her marriage. Twenty-one-year-old Sarah Doucette married a charming, gregarious and attentive man. Six years later, she left the marriage, lucky to be alive. Suffering from PTSD and dissociation after years of physical and emotional abuse, Sarah could barely remember the details of her marriage. After her ex-husband's death by suicide, Sarah set out to interview those who knew him, piecing together the destructive patterns in his life and how it affected her even years later. This book is a cautionary tale about trusting one's inner voice in order to leave an abusive relationship. It is a story of domestic abuse survival that can help others survive their trauma while outlining the many kinds of domestic abuse.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
