Dan Storper, founder of Putumayo World Music, passed away on Thursday. Since 1993 I've been enjoying the unique compilation albums Putumayo have released, celebrating regions and countries, and genres of music from all over. Their booklets are full of information, recipes, translations and all manner of extra details about the musicians, too. Thanks, Dan. for making so much beautiful music accessible to all of us. Also, I'm celebrating 40 years of The Saturday Edge next week, so a bunch of old favourites crept in today and there will be more next week. Played lots of new releases too, as well as Rogue previews, and wonderful displays of multicultural Canadiana.

These novels are seeped in Canadiana – set in Montreal, Quebec in 2012, the novel explores the emerging fentanyl problem in Canada and the havoc it wrecks on people in Denny's life. The first in a series of detective novels, this is a great tale, I read it in a few sittings. With a background in poetry, Chris has a deft hand in painting scenes, truly bringing us into feeling the scenes he's painted. It's a good read.We also talk “inside baseball” about the process of publishing a book, independently. The big benefit – you have total creative control. There's good insight here if self-publishing is on your mind.I hope you enjoy this episode. With Canada/US relations at their lowest point since we burned down their White House, we felt we should try generating some cross-border goodwill. We invited good friend of the show Josh Skaar (TalkSMAC podcast) to share in a bit of Canadiana as we take on Sean William Scott's GOON. Surprisingly our first hockey centered movie, GOON is largely a fun, competent comedy that we all liked. Of course, because we're a bunch of movie snobs, that doesn't stop us from beating up on this one a bunch. For our non-Canadian friends, here is a link to the Halifax Explosion we mentioned at the end of the episode. Once you're done listening, keep the conversation going on our Discord channel!

Tonight's Jazz Feature is a tribute to Canada and all things Canadian. It's been heard on The Jazz Show before but in these unsettled times I think it's time to hear it again. It's The Canadiana Suite played by and composed by the great Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson. Oscar performs the suite with his working trio of the time with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. It was recorded on Sept.9,1964 in New York. The 8 movement suite takes us across Canada from East to West in a series of musical portraits. It's time to be proud of Canada and the Canadiana Suite represents that pride.

In January 1970, a band from Winnipeg with a cryptic name released an album that, despite containing criticism of American policies, became a huge success in the U.S. and went to number 1 in Canada.
