Acclaimed religion reporter for the New York Times, Peter Steinfels recently authored an article in the publication Commonweal. In it he makes an impassioned, meticulously developed case that a recent grand jury report on sexual abuse in Pennsylvania was, quote, “Inaccurate, Unfair, and Misleading”.   Steinfels claims the report was surrounded by journalistic laziness, misrepresentation of the efforts made by the Catholic Church to address the crisis, and a dramatic roll-out of accusations that were not supported by the report.  Host Bill Baker speaks to Steinfels to unpack his criticisms of the report.

Peter Steinfels discusses the PA Grand Jury Report, a document he contends is "inaccurate, unfair, and fundamentally misleading" in its characterization of how church officials handled allegations of abuse there. Allan Lichtman, author of The Embattled Vote in America, discusses the complicated history of voting rights in the United States and how the Constitution is actually responsible for many of our current problems. In 2012 Shaun Dougherty reported abuse he had suffered at the hands of a priest when he was between the ages of 11 and 13. An investigation opened and was handed over to the Attorney General's office. The Altoona-Johnstown Diocese report, which included Shaun's statements, was released in 2016 to the public. It spurred survivors from all over the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to report their abuse and ultimately led to the PA Grand Jury Investigation. This was the largest investigation into Catholic pedophile abuse in history. It uncovered over 350 pedophiles and over 1,000 victims. Shaun talks about the impact the report has had on survivors around the globe since its release two weeks ago. Unfortunately, we probably need to talk about the recent Pennsylvania Grand Jury report regarding the tragedy of child molestation by certain priests, and the Church's response to it. Certainly not our usual direction of discussion, but one we would be remiss to ignore. (As usual, we get to it eventually.) We're not experts in what to do about it—we just try to talk it out a little.

On this episode of Case In Point, Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law, talks about the Center County PA, Grand Jury report where they investigated the death of Timothy Piazza.   The Grand Jury’s report, linked below, outlines Penn State’s responsibility in the death of Tim Piazza. The report highlights the fact that Penn State knew there was a hazing problem since at least 2009, when they investigated the death of Joe Dodo at the same fraternity that Timothy Piazza died at.   Penn State is not the only institution with problems with hazing, as we’ve seen, other institutions like LSU, UWF, FSU, and even the Military.
