Anne Schlepphorst serves as the Executive Director of the Iowa Board of Pharmacy, Interim Executive Director of the Iowa Board of Nursing, and Monitoring Bureau Chief. In addition to serving the Boards of Pharmacy and Nursing, Anne truly enjoys spending time working with staff to provide some of the best professional health programming in the country for health professionals struggling with mental health, substance abuse, and/or health-related impairments. Anne has worked with the boards for the past six years and was most recently the Chief Investigator for the Iowa Boards of Pharmacy and Medicine. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Afghan Muslims coming to faith in Christ The last time Khada saw her husband was an ordinary day – or as ordinary as any day can be in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in 2021, reports Open Doors. Afghan citizens face daily restrictions, oppression and danger, especially for underground Christians like Khada and her husband, Ehsan. Khada was born into a deeply religious Muslim family. She expected to follow the same path as her mother: marry the Muslim man chosen by her parents and raise a devout Muslim family herself. Her Christian boss did something very gutsy. She gave Khada a Bible. In Afghanistan, even before the Taliban takeover, it was extremely risky to give a Muslim a Bible. It's illegal to convert from Islam and very dangerous to share your Christian faith. Over the next six months, the Muslim couple read through the Bible together. After trusting Christ as their Savior, they shared their new-found faith with relatives, many of whom also became Christians, despite the risks. Tragically, Eshan was killed by Muslim extremists for abandoning the false prophet of Mohammad. One Open Doors field worker said, “Despite hardships, believers' unwavering faith in Jesus Christ motivates them to operate covertly, spreading the good news among their fellow Afghans.” Prayerfully consider giving $4 to supply a Bible or $22 to help pay for a Christian radio broadcast into Afghanistan through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. According to Open Doors, Afghanistan is the 10th most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Pray the same prayer for our Afghan brothers and sisters in Christ as the Apostle Paul asked believers to pray for him. In Ephesians 6:19-20, he wrote, “Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the Gospel. … Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.” Kamala Harris delivered generalities in CNN interview Last Thursday night, CNN's Dana Bash sat down with Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz for her first interview in 40 days. Kamala spoke in generalities right out of the gate. BASH: “The voters are really eager to hear what your plans are. If you are elected, what would you do on day one in the White House?” HARRIS: “There are a number of things I will tell you. First and foremost, one of my highest priorities, is to do what we can to support and strengthen the middle class. When I look at the aspirations, the goals, the ambitions of the American people, I think that people are ready for a new way forward, in a way that generations of Americans have been fueled by, by hope and by optimism. I think, sadly, in the last decade, we have had in the former president, someone who has really been pushing an agenda and an environment that is about diminishing the character and the strength of who we are as Americans, dividing our nation, and I think people are ready to turn the page on that.” BASH: “So, what would you do Day One?” HARRIS: “Day One, it's going to be about, one, implementing my plan for what I call an ‘opportunity economy.' I've already laid out a number of proposals in that regard, which include what we're going to do to bring down the cost of everyday goods, what we're going to do to invest in America's small businesses, what we're going to do to invest in families, for example, extending the child tax credit to $6,000 for families for the first year of their child's life to help them buy a car seat, to help them buy baby clothes, a crib. So, there are a number of things on Day One.” BASH: “So, you have been vice president for three and a half years. The steps that you're talking about now, why haven't you done them already?” Kamala has no regrets in describing Biden as “extraordinarily strong” CNN's Dana Bash asked Harris about her absurd and truly unbelievable defense of Biden's cognitive ability even after his June debate with Trump when Biden's mental decline was painfully obvious for all to see. BASH: “Vice President Harris, you were a very staunch defender of President Biden's capacity to serve another four years. Right after the debate, you insisted that President Biden is extraordinarily strong. Given where we are now, do you have any regrets about what you told the American people?” HARRIS: “No, not at all.” Tim Walz confronted over lie he “served in war” CNN's Dana Bash asked Tim Walz, the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, about his false claim that he served in war. BASH: “I want to ask you a question about how you've described your service in the National Guard. You said that you carried weapons in war, but you have never deployed actually in a war zone. A campaign official said that you misspoke. Did you?” WALZ: “Well, first of all, I'm incredibly proud. I've done 24 years of wearing uniform of this country. My record speaks for itself. But I think people are coming to you to know me. I speak like they do. I speak candidly. I wear my emotions on my sleeves. BASH: “The idea that you said that you were in war. Did you misspeak, as the campaign has said?” WALZ: “Yeah, I said we were talking about, in this case, this was after a school shooting, the idea of carrying these weapons of war. My wife, the English teacher, told me my grammar is not always correct.” J.D. Vance called Walz a liar In a separate CNN interview, Republican Vice Presidential nominee J.D. Vance called Tim Walz out for his lies. VANCE: “I've never criticized what Tim Walz did when he was in the military. I criticized his lying about his own record. This is a guy who was captured on video saying, ‘I carried a gun in war.' He never went to war. “This is a guy who's been captured on video as other people say, he's an Afghanistan veteran, he's a veteran of a war, nodding along in agreement instead of saying, ‘No, no. I did serve my country, and I did it honorably, but I never went to a war zone.' I'm not criticizing Tim Walz's service. I'm criticizing the fact that he lied about his service for political gain. Dana, I do think it's scandalous behavior.” Walz confronted over two other lies But Walz' lies did not stop with his military record. BASH: “You had to clarify that you had said that you and your wife used IVF, but it turned out you used a different kind of fertility in order to have children. And then, when you ran for Congress in 2006, your campaign repeatedly made false statements about a 1995 arrest for drunken reckless driving. What do you say to voters who aren't sure whether they can take you at your word? WALZ: “I certainly own my mistakes when I make them. I spoke about the treatments that were available to us that had those beautiful children there. That's quite a contrast in folks that are trying to take those rights away from us.” For the record, Donald Trump is not trying to curtail the availability of In Vitro Fertilization at all. Historic Gutenberg Bible published August 24, 1456 And finally, August 24th, 1456 was a unique anniversary. That's when the second volume of the Gutenberg Bible was bound in Mainz, Germany. It completed a two-year project to create the first complete book printed with movable type. The Gutenberg Bible was named after the inventor of the unique printing press with movable type, Johannes Gutenberg. It marked the start of the "Gutenberg Revolution" and the age of printed books in the West. Whether it was on stage, on screen in films by Franco Zeffirelli or Baz Luhrmann or Shonda Rhimes' Still Star-Crossed, or in the pages of the Folger Shakespeare edition, your early experience probably shaped how you see Juliet. Over 400 years, our thinking about Shakespeare's first tragic heroine has shifted repeatedly, revealing as much about us as Shakespeare's play does. Oxford professor Sophie Duncan, Shakespeare scholar and author of Juliet: The Life and Afterlives of Shakespeare's First Tragic Heroine, explores the enduring legacy of one of Shakespeare's most iconic characters. The conversation touches on Juliet's cultural impact, why Shakespeare may have centered his tragedy around a young woman and the societal reflections found in the various interpretations of Juliet throughout history. The episode also discusses how different eras, particularly the Victorian period, have grappled with Juliet's rebellious and passionate nature, often reshaping her character to fit their values. Duncan shares insights into why Juliet remains a potent symbol of love and tragedy and how this character continues to captivate audiences centuries after she was first brought to life on the stage. Sophie Duncan is a scholar who specializes in Shakespeare's performance history and how Early Modern dramas have been used to explore issues of gender, race, and sexuality over the last four and a half centuries. She is interested in women's creative networks, theatrical memory, theater props, cognitive approaches to drama, and cultural memory. Sophie regularly works with theater companies to bring Shakespeare's works to life. Duncan is the author of Juliet: The Life and Afterlives of Shakespeare's First Tragic Heroine and Shakespeare's Women and the Fin de Siècle. Paul Young- “A Guide to Edging-S05E08”Delayed gratification: Building up to orgasm and repeatedly backing off builds up the physical, mental, and emotional anticipation typically resulting in harder, longer, and more fulfilling orgasms.Control: It is very common in BDSM play for the Dom(me) to deny or edge a submissive. Denial of a basic animalistic urge can be an extremely intoxicating type of controlAwareness: Edging tends to make people more self-aware of their bodies and minds involving their orgasmic state and how things like breathing and internal thoughts add to or take away from their orgasms. They can then apply that knowledge to other sexual experiences when not edging to provide similar results.According to Anne Russo, LCSW, “edging involves building up to orgasm and then slowing down or taking breaks before you or your partner reach climax. The process, sometimes called “surfing” or “peaking,” can increase blood flow to the genitals to enhance arousal. This can create a lot of sexual tension and excitement, which can lead to a really intense and pleasurable orgasm. It's like a rollercoaster ride for your body.”The prolonged release of dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, testosterone, and estrogen can provide a much deeper and longer-lasting euphoric state.Addiction: due to the release of neurotransmitters and hormones it is an easily addictive behavior.Loss of orgasm: This can happen once (common), often (common), or permanently (rare). There is a fine line between an edging, a denied, and a ruined orgasm. Many people if edged too long can become so mentally frustrated that it gets in the way of the physical release.Some people start requiring longer and longer “rollercoaster rides” to get the same level of chemical release. If this is constantly being fed, the mind and body will become programmed through classic conditioning and won't be able to get enough to complete the release. You will easily recognize this happening and you know to take a few weeks or even a few months from all sexual activity to allow for a reset. It's also advised to seek help from a professional therapist or psychologist who specializes in sexual addictions and dysfunctions.Diminished or loss of genital sensitivity: On average it takes women 20 minutes to climax and men 2-10 minutes. Think about the amount of stimulation that it takes for an hour, two-hour, or ten-hour “rollercoaster ride” of edging! Now, multiply that by the average number of times a person masturbates and has sex a week. I don't have those figures but that's got to be a metric shit-ton. The nerves are so sensitive that prolonged, intense stimulation can cause them to dull. This can make it difficult, hard, or even impossible to orgasm.The numbers game: rating the pleasure intensity on a scale from 0-10 and picking numbers or rolling dice for pleasure peaks and valleys.How close can you get? Pushing for the exact edge of climax without going over.Ejaculating without orgasm: Running a man to edge of climax and then removing all stimulation can cause men to ejaculate without the full body orgasm. Edging, peaking, or surfing is a sexual technique whereby an orgasm is controlled for the purpose of prolonged pleasure and/or agony, It can be performed alone or with a partner and involves the maintenance of a high level of sexual arousal for an extended period without reaching climax.Why?How does it work?Who's it for? Everyone, right?!?! Well, no. I haven't been able to find any statistics I trust so basing it only on my personal experiences, I'd say half or most people have stronger, longer-lasting orgasms from edging, around 20% have mixed results, and 20% have consistently diminished orgasmic experiences.Risks?How? Easy! First, if doing this with a partner, talk about it thoroughly and openly. Make sure everyone is on board, consent is agreed upon, and an easy safe word is known. Bring yourself or your partner to the brink of orgasm and slow down, stop, or move the focal point of stimulation to another part of the body. Do this as many times as desired or until a safe word is called. Be sure to talk about what that safe word means. Does it mean all sexual contact must stop? Is it a way to say “I can't take it anymore! I need to cum NOW!” or does it indicate a need to check in and see which one the person wants. I prefer that “yellow” means “check in with me”, “May I PLEASE cum, Sir” tells me she's had enough and want to be finished off, and “red” means all activity stops, I check on their physical, mental, and emotional safety, provide any medical attention, support, food, drink, or space needed, and enter in to aftercare. It is not the time for 20 questions of “Why did you call red?!?!?!” They will get to that. A Palestinian production of Hamlet in the West Bank is the backdrop for Isabella Hammad's new novel, Enter Ghost. Hammad's first novel, the beautiful and sprawling The Parisian, won international acclaim in 2019. Granta included Hammad in its decennial “Best of Young British Novelists” list earlier this year. The narrator of Hammad's new novel is Sonia, a British Palestinian actress who visits her sister in Israel to recover from the end of an affair. Despite wanting to take a break from the stage, Sonia gets roped into playing Gertrude in a production of Hamlet being mounted in the West Bank. Sonia's fellow actors read Hamlet as an allegory for the Palestinian struggle. While Sonia resists their interpretation, she uncovers ghosts of her own—repressed memories, a family history of resistance, and a newly discovered commitment to the Palestinian cause. Despite the novel's contemporary setting and political themes, Hammad never lets her characters' trenchant views overwhelm the complex beauty of her storytelling. Educational Pearls: Most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in North America: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) From the emergency department patients should be connected to follow-up care and educated on vaccine series Most common non-viral STD in North America: Trichomonas Vaginalis While men may be asymptomatic, they can transmit the disease to women who may experience irritation leading to increased likelihood of PID and contraction of other STDs and HIV Trichomonas is diagnosed via wet preparation with visualization of motile parasites Similarly, men's urine can be tested for visualized motile parasites Expedite lab as parasites are motile for about one hour PCR test is becoming more available Most common bacterial STD in North America: Chlamydia trachomatis Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a less common bacterial STD but does have high rates of drug resistance Empiric STD treatment includes IM Ceftriaxone and PO Doxycycline Providers should consider adding Flagyl for Trichomonas Vaginalis coverage ReferencesSexually transmitted disease surveillance, 2020.
