The Penn State child sex abuse scandal concerned allegations and subsequent convictions of child sexual abuse committed by Jerry Sandusky, an assistant coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team, over a period of at least fifteen years. The scandal began to emerge publicly in March 2011 and broke in early November 2011 when Sandusky was indicted on 52 counts of child molestation, stemming from incidents that occurred between 1994 and 2009.[1] Sandusky was ultimately convicted on 45 counts of child sexual abuse on June 22, 2012,[2] and was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years and a maximum of 60 years in prison.[3]Additionally, three Penn State officials – school president Graham Spanier, vice president Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley – were charged with perjury, obstruction of justice, failure to report suspected child abuse, and related charges.[4] The Penn State Board of Trustees commissioned an independent investigation by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, whose report stated that Penn State's longtime head football coach Joe Paterno, along with Spanier, Curley and Schultz, had known about allegations of child abuse by Sandusky as early as 1998, had shown "total and consistent disregard...for the safety and welfare of Sandusky's child victims", and "empowered" Sandusky to continue his acts of abuse by failing to disclose them.[5]: 14 [6][7] Shortly after the scandal broke, Spanier resigned. The Board of Trustees terminated the contracts of Paterno and Curley. As a result of the scandal, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) imposed sanctions on the Penn State football program: a $60 million fine, a four-year postseason ban, scholarship reductions, and a vacation of all victories from 1998 to 2011.[8] These sanctions were considered to be among the most severe ever imposed on an NCAA member school. NCAA President Mark Emmert stated that the sanctions were levied "not to be just punitive, but to make sure the university establishes an athletic culture and daily mindset in which football will never again be placed ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting young people."[9][10] The Big Ten Conference subsequently imposed an additional $13 million fine.[11]The Paterno family retained former Attorney General Richard Thornburgh to conduct a review of the Freeh report, which concluded that the report constituted a "rush to injustice" that could not be relied upon[12][13] and that Freeh's evidence fell "far short" of showing that Joe Paterno attempted to conceal the scandal, but rather that "the contrary is true".[13] In January 2013, state senator Jake Corman and state treasurer Rob McCord sued the NCAA, seeking to overturn the Penn State sanctions on the basis that Freeh had been actively collaborating with the organization and that due process had not been followed. In November 2014, Corman released emails showing "regular and substantive" contact between Freeh's investigators and the NCAA, suggesting that Freeh's conclusions were orchestrated.[14] As part of a settlement, the NCAA restored the 111 wins to Paterno's record on January 16, 2015.[15][10]Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

For decades, Penn State football stood for greatness, on the field and off. Under legendary Coach Joe Paterno, the program was known for doing things the right way – or, as Paterno dubbed it, “success with honor.” But on Saturday, November 5, 2011, everything the team stood for came crashing down. The horrific crimes of former assistant Jerry Sandusky are now well known, but what's often overlooked is the heroism of the young men who rallied to raise Penn State football from the ashes – guys like Christian Hackenberg, John Urschel, Saquon Barkley, Carl Nassib, and Trace McSorley. Acclaimed writer Chris Raymond paints an amazing, behind-the-scenes portrait of their inspiring journey, with his new book, MEN IN WHITE: The Gutsy, Against-All-Odds Return of Penn State Football (St. Martin's Press). New children's book uses animals to teach about foster care

There are about 15,000 children in temporary foster care in Pennsylvania. Most of them will return to their family of origin. It can be painful for kids to be separated from their parents or families and for younger children, it may be hard to understand what's happening to them and around them. A new children's book called The Watchful Owl tells the story of a young fox that loses his parents and lives with another animal family. It was written by Heather Paterno, an attorney who focuses on families and children's issues and is a board member of Dauphin County's Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children or CASA. The artwork in the The Watchful Owl also tells the story and will keep kids' attention. It's illustrated by artist P.D. Murray. Both Heather Paterno and P.D. Murray were with us on The Spark Wednesday. Paterno surmised the story,"The story is just a parable of sort of what could happen to a child in the foster care system, sort of told through a family of animals, so that children can understand it. And essentially what happens to Fennec is he doesn't have a father who's around. His mother's working hard, raising the family. And tragically, something happens to her. She gets picked up by a hunter and the great owl, that's a watchful owl, has always circled around the woods and looked out for all of the the creatures in the woods. And he gathers the community together. And they come up with a plan to look out for Fennec and his siblings." Fennec, the young fox is taken in by the deer family after he loses his mother. Paterno that's part of the story behind the story,"There is a lesson there. And really it is how a child can walk through the dependency system. This is a very common thing that we do. We have what's called family group conferences, where whenever a child is in care, obviously you want to keep them and the most natural place that you can. So that's why we look to family members. That's why we look to to community members. You never want to have to pick up a child and put them with strangers. Now this fox winds up being with strangers. But he also has two siblings that wind up living with family members. And it's very common. You'll see that a lot in the dependency system. They have these family group conferences and they bring in everybody. And how can we keep the child in their most natural environment of origin? And who are the supports? Who are the people that we can bring around to help assist this family?" Murray's illustrations help tell the story, especially of Fennec, who is vulnerable,"He's small in most of the scenes. He's little in these environments of these dark woods and larger animals and such. You know, people talk a lot about the importance of representation of kids, how they look, skin color, gender, all of those things in books. But I think it's really critical to -- and Heather has done this wonderfully to capture the needs state of children and to have representation of that. So this does a wonderful job of preparing children or children that aren't in the foster system. Probably build some empathy out of reading a story like this." Murray was asked what the takeaway is from The Watchful Owl,"I think it's a heartwarming story without being pollyannish. It really tells about the foster system when everything goes right, when there's a champion for a child." Proceeds from sales of the book will go to Dauphin County's CASA. Paterno explained what CASA does,"These are volunteers, community volunteers who get trained in child abuse and the dependency system. And then they are appointed either one child or one sibling group, one family group. And they also help to advocate for the child's best interests through their entire court proceedings. And, what I can tell you in Dauphin County itself, we have over 350 children right now who are in foster care. That's a lot of kids. And while each child has what I was, which was a guardian ad litem, I can tell you, is guardians of litem or G-A-L, as we call them for short. They often have anywhere from 60 to it can be 110 children. So it's really tough to know what is going on with all of those children every day. Every moment of every day. What's going -on in school, what's going on in their home life, what's going on, with them psychologically and emotionally. Are they getting checked in and seen regularly? So having this outside volunteer come in and represent that one child or one family where they can devote all of their time, to helping, maybe they can find that one psychological report that was buried, that had that one nugget of information that was helpful. And that's what Dauphin County CASA does. They recruit and they train these advocates, to really make a difference in a child's life."      Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Greg Bucceroni grew up as a tough kid in Philadelphia. The same kid never would have seen his future - to be abused by Penn State's Jerry Sandusky, and involved with a child abuse ring covering three states. A compelling story with details you'll only here on the Opperman Report.Timeline of abuse of Jerry SanduskyHere is a timeline of events in the case against Sandusky, who was found guilty of sexually molesting 10 boys over a 15-year period. Many of the details of abuse come from a grand jury report.1969: Pennsylvania State University hires Sandusky as an assistant football coach under head coach Joe Paterno.1977: Sandusky founds The Second Mile, a charity dedicated to helping troubled children. It is through this charity that Sandusky finds his victims.1994: A boy identified as Victim 7, who is now 26, meets Sandusky through The Second Mile. He later tells a grand jury that he had a “blurry memory” of having improper contact with Sandusky when they were showering together in the football locker room on the Penn State campus.1996 or 1997: A boy identified as Victim 4, now 27, begins a relationship with Sandusky that results in repeated sexual violations, according to the grand jury report.1998: Sandusky showers with a boy identified as Victim 5, now 22, pinning him in a corner, rubbing him and placing the boy's hand on his genitals, according to the grand jury report.1998: Sandusky asks a boy identified as Victim 6, now 24, to shower with him when he is 11, and Sandusky lathers soap on his back and bear-hugs him, according to the grand jury report. The boy tells his mother, who reports it to the university.1998: University police investigate allegations of sexually inappropriate behavior involving Sandusky. No criminal charges are pursued.June 1, 1998: University police interview Sandusky, who admits showering with Victim 6. A detective tells Sandusky never to shower with children again, says the grand jury report.1999: Sandusky retires as defensive coordinator but retains privileges such as access to Penn State athletic facilities.1999: The American Football Coaches Association names Sandusky the major college Assistant Coach of the Year.2000: Sandusky publishes his autobiography “Touched: The Jerry Sandusky Story.”Summer 2000: Sandusky hugs a boy identified as Victim 3 in the shower after workouts and touches his genitals when the boy sleeps at Sandusky's house, according to grand jury testimony.Fall 2000: A janitor sees Sandusky in the showers performing oral sex on a young boy identified as Victim 8. The janitor tells co-workers and his supervisor, but the incident is not reported to authorities at the time.February 2001: A graduate assistant, later identified as Mike McQueary, reports seeing Sandusky rape a boy of about 10 years old in the shower of the campus football locker room.2004 to 2008: A boy identified as Victim 9 was forced to perform oral sex on Sandusky repeatedly in the basement bedroom of Sandusky's home, and Sandusky attempted to rape him at least 16 times, according to the grand jury report.Fall 2007: A boy identified as Victim 10 said Sandusky pulled down his gym shorts and performed oral sex on him in the basement bedroom of Sandusky's home. Sandusky also has the boy perform oral sex on him.2007 and 2008: A boy identified as Victim 1 says Sandusky performed oral sex on him more than 20 times when he was 13 or 14 years old, according to grand jury testimony.2009: Sandusky is barred from a school district attended by Victim 1 after the boy's mother reports allegations of sexual assault to the school, according to the grand jury. The matter is reported to authorities, triggering an investigation by Pennsylvania State Police and the Attorney General's Office.September 2010: Sandusky retires from The Second Mile.November 5, 2011: A Centre County grand jury charges Sandusky with 40 counts of molesting eight boys from 1994 to 2009. Why We Love Baseball: A History in 50 Moments by Joe Posnanski https://amzn.to/46EEbM5 NEW YORK TIMES bestseller WALL STREET JOURNAL bestseller #1 New York Times bestselling author Joe Posnanski is back with a masterful ode to the game: a countdown of 50 of the most memorable moments in baseball's history, to make you fall in love with the sport all over again. Posnanski writes of major moments that created legends, and of forgotten moments almost lost to time. It's Willie Mays's catch, Babe Ruth's called shot, and Kirk Gibson's limping home run; the slickest steals; the biggest bombs; and the most triumphant no-hitters. But these are also moments raw with the humanity of the game, the unheralded heroes, the mesmerizing mistakes drenched in pine tar, and every story, from the immortal to the obscure, is told from a unique perspective. Whether of a real fan who witnessed it, or the pitcher who gave up the home run, the umpire, the coach, the opposing player—these are fresh takes on moments so powerful they almost feel like myth. Posnanski's previous book, The Baseball 100, portrayed the heroes and pioneers of the sport, and now, with his trademark wit, encyclopedic knowledge, and acute observations, he gets at the real heart of the game. From nineteenth-century pitchers' duels to breaking the sport's color line in the '40s, all the way to the greatest trick play of the last decade and the slide home that became a meme, Posnanski's illuminating take allows us to rediscover the sport we love—and thought we knew. Why We Love Baseball is an epic that ends too soon, a one-of-a-kind love letter to the sport that has us thrilled, torn, inspired, and always wanting more.About the author Joe Posnanski is the New York Times bestselling author of Paterno, The Machine, and The Secret of Golf. He is currently the founder and editor of Joe Blogs at JoePosnanski.com as well as co-host of "The PosCast" podcast with television producer Michael Schur. In November 2014, Corman released emails showing "regular and substantive" contact between Freeh's investigators and the NCAA, suggesting that Freeh's conclusions were orchestrated.[14] As part of a settlement, the NCAA restored the 111 wins to Paterno's record on January 16, 2015.[15][10]3 years ago #&, #blehar:, #coverup, #ed, #mile, #opperman, #penn, #ray, #report, #sandusky, #second, #spreaker, #stateThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

Title: The Untold Truth: Re-examining the Penn State-Jerry Sandusky ScandalIn a recent episode of the podcast "With the Benefit of Hindsight," host John Zeigler dives deep into the controversial Penn State-Jerry Sandusky scandal. Zeigler's initial interest in the case was whether legendary football coach Joe Paterno was unfairly fired. However, as his investigation progressed, Zeigler discovered that not only may Paterno have been railroaded, but the entire case against Sandusky could be fundamentally flawed. The podcast discusses the media's role in portraying good guys as bad and vice versa, as well as the attorney general's office's role in the scandal. Zeigler also delves into his personal experience with Jerry Sandusky during his interviews and their subsequent correspondence, discussing key moments and insights that led him to believe in Sandusky's innocence. One of the significant revelations from Zeigler's interviews with Sandusky was his unexpected disdain for Joe Paterno. This attitude contradicts the narrative of Sandusky being guilty, as he would likely feel guilt for destroying Paterno's career and life if he were indeed guilty. Zeigler also noted the importance of the 11-year period between Sandusky's retirement and his arrest, which allowed people to forget who Sandusky truly was and contributed to the moral panic that followed. The podcast also pays tribute to Franco Harris, a former NFL and Penn State football player, who was a close friend of Zeigler and a staunch supporter of Paterno. Harris' recent passing has affected Zeigler's motivation to continue investigating the case, as he believes any potential victory would be hollow without Harris there to share it.In conclusion, the podcast episode "Uncovering the Truth: Re-examining the Penn State-Jerry Sandusky Scandal" sheds light on the complexities of the case and the many factors that contributed to the miscarriage of justice. While the truth may never be fully revealed, Zeigler's investigation highlights the importance of questioning popular narratives and seeking the truth in a world where media frenzy can often distort reality. Before college football became all about Power Five Conferences, football on the East Coast was some of the most competitive and led by several Hall of Fame coaches. While it may seem complicated to believe today, there was a time when Syracuse versus Penn State was for bragging rights in the Eastern part of the country. My college coach, Ben Schwartzwalder, battled Nittany Lion coaches Rip Engle and Joe Paterno during his long coaching career in some epic battles. Before arriving on the Syracuse campus, Franco Harris was on the campus of Penn State, making plays for Paterno and the Nittany Lions. Because of the old NCAA rules when first-year students didn't play, I'd seen Harris make plays and would compete against his Nittany Lions squad my sophomore year, which was his senior year. This was the start of a longtime rivalry between our teams. Harris would become a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1972 NFL Draft, and a few years later, Paul Brown and the Cincinnati Bengals drafted me in the third round of the 1974 NFL Draft. For my ten seasons with the Bengals, we played the Steelers 20 times, with the Bengals earning eight wins against a Steelers squad that would win four Super Bowls, with many Steelers feeling Franco was the glue to their success. After the 1983 season, the Steelers felt Franco had seen his better days and allowed him to sign with the Seattle Seahawks, where he ended his career in 1984.  I left the Bengals after the 1983 season, where I would play two years in the USFL for the New Jersey Generals before ending my playing career. Shortly after, started a career in broadcasting as a color analyst with the Bengals in 1986. While Franco Harris was a longtime rival, he was also a great man off the field who touched many by giving his time and energy for the betterment of all.  Harris was more than just part of one of the greatest plays in NFL history, the "Immaculate Reception," and I wanted to take time on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to pay tribute to one of football's all-time greats, Franco Harris.
