In this bonus episode, Elyse interviews Kristin Kobes Du Mez, author of Jesus and John Wayne about her new film, For Our Daughters. In this documentary, which is a collaboration between women who were sexually assaulted, shamed, and blamed by their churches, and attorney Rachael Denhollender, Du Mez connects the dots between toxic masculinity, the treatment of many women in the evangelical church, the lust for power resident in the Christian Nationalist movement, and our current political context. The film and other resources may be accessed for free at https://www.forourdaughtersfilm.com/ or on YouTube. Due to the nature of some of the topics, this podcast comes with a discretion warning. Kristin Kobes Du Mez is a NYT best selling author and professor of History and Gender Studies at Calvin University. Ready to question some widely accepted teachings on sexual purity? "Every Man's Battle" might be doing more harm than good. On this episode of Calibrate Conversations, Brady dissects the implications of this popular book and its over-the-top graphic content, arguing for a healthier, more biblically sound approach to tackling lust and sexual sin. By illustrating the pendulum effect, where extreme corrective measures backfire, he open the floor to a critical and balanced discussion on the real solutions to these deep-rooted issues. As Brady ventures into the murky waters of marriage expectations, he challenges harmful stereotypes and generalizations about men's struggles with lust. Brady shares his personal journey of fidelity to his wife, countering the narrative that all men face the same battles. He also confront the dangerous idea of treating wives as mere objects for sexual gratification, advocating instead for relationships built on love, mutual respect, and true intimacy. By rethinking these conventional narratives, he aims to set a new standard for what a healthy marriage should look like.Navigating the broader implications of abuse and redemption within relationships, we touch on the #MeToo and #ChurchToo movements, dissecting high-profile scandals and their impact on public consciousness. Brady critiques the misuse of influential resources like "Love and Respect," discussing how they can lead to manipulation and unrealistic marital expectations. Through the lens of biblical principles and gospel-centered leadership, he calls for accountability, balanced perspectives, and heart-level transformation to foster relationships that reflect God's true design.Join us weekly as we strive help people embrace God's standard for sexuality! Surprising new data is in on whether GenZ men or women are leaving the church. We dig into and get all robust with this conversation. Are young men feeling isolated, unsupported, and under constant attack in today's culture? When they turn to the church for guidance, they often find little support, leading many to seek controversial internet figures instead. Some feel masculinity has been attacked and stripped away in the social media age, yet it remains prominent in the real world. Amidst discussions on toxic masculinity, there's a perceived lack of initiatives nurturing positive masculine growth and responsibility among young men. This may be contributing to Gen Z Christian males becoming more religious than their female peers, who are increasingly religiously unaffiliated, and disillusioned potentially by abuse revelations like #MeToo and #ChurchToo. For the first time ever, young men are outpacing young women when it comes to church affiliation and religious expression. • Young men are now more religious than young women, contradicting a long-held narrative. • Young men feeling unsupported, isolated, and under constant attack, turning to controversial internet figures for guidance. • Masculinity has been attacked and stripped away in the social media age, leading to a lack of personal connection and reality. • Gen Z women increasingly religiously unaffiliated, disillusioned by #MeToo, #ChurchToo abuse revelations. • Young women leaving churches due to pastors' sexual misconduct and abuse. • Young men value traditional family life more than young women, contrasting with societal narratives promoting career success. • Complementarian churches reduce women's visibility, driving them away yet liberal denominations ordaining women decline steeply. • Conservative and liberal churches face challenges regarding growth and retention, with liberal churches struggling due to a lack of clear boundaries. Gender dynamics in the workplace. What to do when you're the only one of your kind in the room. The power dynamics and damage of the #MeToo and #ChurchToo scandals. These are some of the heavy topics that Steve Cuss and his guest, leadership development expert Kadi Cole, consider on this episode of Being Human. Their conversation draws upon Cole's years spent developing women leaders and working with diverse teams as one of the world's foremost leaders in helping organizations navigate healthy gender dynamics. Cuss and Cole talk about the ways people camouflage themselves to fit into a group, how men and women handle inner confidence differently, and what it looks like to be ourselves in Christ. Their discussion covers how leaders can cultivate safe environments that allow people to show up as they are, the effects of powerful leaders with unaddressed childhood wounds, and how Cole's background as a nurse prepared her to engage executive leadership with a holistic perspective. They also talk about Momentum Marketplace, Cole's new initiative to help young, kingdom-minded leaders be mentored in the marketplace. The Expectation Gap by Steve Cuss is now available! While we are no longer producing new Tent Talks episodes every now and then we will take the opportunity to point listeners to new projects. Tent producer and co-host Chris Marchand has just begun releasing a new podcast we wanted you to be aware of: Wall of Silence. Here is the description: In this first episode we introduce the sexual abuse case of lay pastor Mark Rivera. From there we begin to look outward to see how church leadership responded to it, from the local diocese to the national denomination, the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). As "the thesis," this episode is the explanation for why this podcast exists and whose story we are telling: the advocacy group ACNAtoo and all victims, whistleblowers, and advocates against church abuse in the ACNA.You can find the Wall of Silence wherever you listen to podcasts: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wall-of-silenceChris has also set up a Patreon account for those who want to support the podcast in that way: https://www.patreon.com/WallofSilencePodcast

On today's MinistryWatch EXTRA episode, we're re-airing an episode featuring an interview I had with Theresa Lynn Sidebotham. She's an attorney and the author of a new book Handling Allegations In A Ministry: Responses and Investigations. It's not clear to me that we are seeing more incidents of sexual abuse in the church than in years past. But I think it is fair to say that more stories are seeing the light of day. The #MeToo Movement, which spawned the #ChurchToo movement, means that more survivors are telling their stories, and the way we handle these stories is vital for the health and healing of the survivors and for the church of Jesus Christ. Theresa Lynn Sidebotham is an attorney who focuses on misconduct response, ministry policy, and employment law. She has helped Christian ministries, churches, and religious organizations of all kinds to protect their members and response to allegations of child abuse, harassment, abuse of power, and other misconduct. I had this conversation with her last week via zoom. We'd like to put a copy of Theresa's book in your hands. It's our thank you gift to you for a gift of any size to MinistryWatch. Just hit the donate button at the top of the page. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. We get database, technical, and editorial support from Stephen DuBarry, Christina Darnell, Emily Kern, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Until next time, may God bless you.
Today's episode is one we thought we'd never ever make. We feel the responsibility to talk about the allegations that have been brought against Mike Bickle as we have talked about being impacted by him and IHOP-KC here on the podcast. More than that, we want to talk about how we've been walking through this devastating news. God is revealing sin across the Church in rapid succession and we believe that He's righting the old culture of men walking with unquestioned authority. We are grieving the revealing of sin and abuse and at the same time fighting for the Church to have women in places of equal leadership and for leaders to walk in honesty, truth, & emotional health.Follow us on InstagramGet our Free Homeschool EbookClick here for a Free *no pitch* 15 minute Breakthrough call with Sara. 8 in 10 men struggle with porn; one of three girls are sexually abused; one in five boys are sexually abused. The root level issues are the same in the church and outside of the church, according to Elizabeth Good, Founder of The Foundation United and author of "Speak the Unspeakable: Real Talk on Secrets, Sex, and Being Set Free:" the church is not talking about sexual sin. Why in the world did the Dalai Lama ask a young boy to suck his tongue? The fact that this was called out so publicly is a great sign that people are fed up with people acting creepy toward our young children. In this episode we talk about the extremely inappropriate comment, including kissing the boy on the lips, followed by a very weak apology. This was chalked up to "innocent joking" that is routinely done with children. We believe the public is finally fed up with the excuses for these kinds of sick behaviors with our children. There's one theme that runs thick among all survivors - loss. And it's not just survivors of abuse. So many millions of people have lost so much. Death is also something that we all will have to face, both among loved ones and we have to face the reality that we ourselves will die, guaranteed. Grief reaches us in tons of different ways and often we're not prepared to face it.But face it we must. We have to face pain to get better. We have to deal with it, process it, acknowledge it, and embrace it if we are going to conquer it. And it's quite possible to conquer our pain! In this episode we talk about facing our pain. We cannot ignore it, mask it, or pretend like it doesn't exist.Clara's Website:https://www.silentgriefsupport.com/Jimmy's book, The Devil Inside: How My Minister Father Molested Kids In Our Home and Church for Decades and How I Finally Stopped Him https://www.amazon.com/dp/1950948617/ref=cm_sw_su_dpSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/SpeakingOutFind us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/jimmyhintonauthorhttps://www.facebook.com/SilentGriefSupportAnd Twitter:https://twitter.com/JimmyHinton12https://twitter.com/clarahintonIntro--Film Glitch by Snowflake (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/56350 Ft: reusenoiseOutro--I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/41284
We're really don't like the term "expert" anymore. Writing a book, taking a course, or holding a certificate or political office doesn't necessarily make someone an expert. There are lots of people in every field who claim to be experts but they lack credibility. Credibility is far superior to claiming expertise, especially when it comes to trauma. Trauma experts are people who have lots of education, experience, and credibility among the people they help. That's not to say that only professionals can be helpful, but be very cautious when people claim to be experts but lack credibility or a vast amount of experience and education. It really matters, when we are processing trauma, whether someone is credible or not.CNBC article- nearly half of retirees plan to retire in debt:https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/16/46-percent-of-americans-expect-to-retire-in-debt.htmlSocial Security Study:https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/research-summaries/debt-trend.htmlCredit Card Debt at All Time High:https://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/09/as-credit-card-debt-hits-new-high-households-near-a-breaking-point.htmlNM Lawmakers Destroy Chile Industry:https://www.abqjournal.com/2579812/lawmakers-overreach-killing-new-mexico-chile-industry.htmlJimmy's book, The Devil Inside: How My Minister Father Molested Kids In Our Home and Church for Decades and How I Finally Stopped Him https://www.amazon.com/dp/1950948617/ref=cm_sw_su_dpSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/SpeakingOutFind us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/jimmyhintonauthorhttps://www.facebook.com/SilentGriefSupportAnd Twitter:https://twitter.com/JimmyHinton12https://twitter.com/clarahintonIntro--Film Glitch by Snowflake (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/56350 Ft: reusenoiseOutro--I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/41284

Very often we are contacted about churches that invite sex offenders into their worship services. We also are asked what the chances are of getting a conviction when abuse is reported. We found some recent statistics on prisons in the US and, to be honest, we were a little surprised. There is a big disparity between the number of sex offenders in prison and the number of those on the sex offender registry.Again, to our surprise, prison populations dramatically shrunk from 2019 to 2020. We do know that most sex offenders receive light sentences, so the statistics actually make sense and should cause us to be extremely vigilant.Prison population ranked by state:https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/prison-population-by-stateJimmy's book, The Devil Inside: How My Minister Father Molested Kids In Our Home and Church for Decades and How I Finally Stopped Him https://www.amazon.com/dp/1950948617/ref=cm_sw_su_dpSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/SpeakingOutFind us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/jimmyhintonauthorhttps://www.facebook.com/SilentGriefSupportAnd Twitter:https://twitter.com/JimmyHinton12https://twitter.com/clarahintonIntro--Film Glitch by Snowflake (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/56350 Ft: reusenoiseOutro--I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/41284
Believe it or not, there aren't that many training courses out there on abuse prevention. Perhaps that's why we have such an epidemic of abuse. In this episode, we talk about the pros and cons of in-person versus online content and look at a couple different training options that might be right for you!Jimmy and Clara's Training Videos (with more added each month!!): https://momence.com/video/plugin/30112Jimmy's book, The Devil Inside: How My Minister Father Molested Kids In Our Home and Church for Decades and How I Finally Stopped Himhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/1950948617/ref=cm_sw_su_dpSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/SpeakingOutFind us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/jimmyhintonauthorhttps://www.facebook.com/SilentGriefSupportAnd Twitter:https://twitter.com/JimmyHinton12https://twitter.com/clarahintonIntro--Film Glitch by Snowflake (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/56350 Ft: reusenoiseOutro--I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/41284
Surprisingly, we get asked a lot if we still have faith in God after all that our family has been through. The answer is a resounding YES. We had plenty of faith struggles, but we came out stronger in our belief of God.There is a lot of ugliness in the world and, unfortunately, in the church too. When everything was stripped from us, all we had left was God. He certainly looks different than he did before all of our tragedies, but that's a good thing.Jimmy's book, The Devil Inside: How My Minister Father Molested Kids In Our Home and Church for Decades and How I Finally Stopped Himhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/1950948617/ref=cm_sw_su_dpSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/SpeakingOutFind us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/jimmyhintonauthorhttps://www.facebook.com/SilentGriefSupportAnd Twitter:https://twitter.com/JimmyHinton12https://twitter.com/clarahintonIntro--Film Glitch by Snowflake (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/56350 Ft: reusenoiseOutro--I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/41284
I once had the privilege to learn from former FBI agent Jim Clemente. His passion for profiling, the fact that he's a survivor of child sexual abuse, and his vast knowledge of abusers' techniques make him a leading expert. He really was a catalyst for getting me started on researching abuse techniques.Deception detection is a very important skill that FBI agents use to determine when someone is lying. Everyone is capable of learning the basics of deception detection. In this episode, we talk about the different techniques Jim Clemente teaches for detecting deception.YouTube video of Jim Clemente on Deception Detection:https://youtu.be/tpJcBozuF6AJimmy's book, The Devil Inside: How My Minister Father Molested Kids In Our Home and Church for Decades and How I Finally Stopped Him https://www.amazon.com/dp/1950948617/ref=cm_sw_su_dpSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/SpeakingOutFind us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/jimmyhintonauthorhttps://www.facebook.com/SilentGriefSupportAnd Twitter:https://twitter.com/JimmyHinton12https://twitter.com/clarahintonIntro--Film Glitch by Snowflake (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/56350 Ft: reusenoiseOutro--I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/41284
In this episode we share dos and don'ts when helping people find safe shelter. Domestic violence is the leading cause of people needing to find safe shelter. But those people are very vulnerable and often fall prey to people who are waiting to take advantage of them, making them worse off than they were before they left their abuser. It's important that we take our time to learn the dos and don'ts so that we don't send people into harms way.Jimmy's book, The Devil Inside: How My Minister Father Molested Kids In Our Home and Church for Decades and How I Finally Stopped Himhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/1950948617/ref=cm_sw_su_dpSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/SpeakingOutFind us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/jimmyhintonauthorhttps://www.facebook.com/SilentGriefSupportAnd Twitter:https://twitter.com/JimmyHinton12https://twitter.com/clarahintonIntro--Film Glitch by Snowflake (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/56350 Ft: reusenoiseOutro--I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/41284
There are some troubling trends with sexual abuse, violence, and drug abuse in the US. Each year we read the Pennsylvania annual report on abuse to gauge what is happening with abuse in our state. Then we look at national statistics. Unfortunately, the numbers are not easing. There are a lot of compound traumas that families are facing. In this episode, we give our opinion for where we are heading this year and how we can help ease this epidemic of abuse.Jimmy's book, The Devil Inside: How My Minister Father Molested Kids In Our Home and Church for Decades and How I Finally Stopped Him https://www.amazon.com/dp/1950948617/ref=cm_sw_su_dpSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/SpeakingOutFind us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/jimmyhintonauthorhttps://www.facebook.com/SilentGriefSupportAnd Twitter:https://twitter.com/JimmyHinton12https://twitter.com/clarahintonIntro-- Film Glitch by Snowflake (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/56350 Ft: reusenoiseOutro-- I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/41284
There has been a recent string of murder-suicides in the news since the new year. Domestic violence has been dubbed the "Shadow Pandemic" and is giving way to large numbers of calls to police. Many of the women who were murdered had a history of telling friends they felt unsafe, filing protective orders, and were making futile attempts to stay separated from their male partner. This is a troubling trend that we need to be aware of and known how to respond because chances are good that you know someone who is victim to a violent partner. In this episode we offer ways that we can be involved. We cannot wait to make a police report after the fact. When we know there is violence, we should begin advocating for victims.Jimmy's book, The Devil Inside:How My Minister Father Molested Kids In Our Home and Church for Decades and How I Finally Stopped Himhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/1950948617/ref=cm_sw_su_dpSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/SpeakingOutFind us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/jimmyhintonauthorhttps://www.facebook.com/SilentGriefSupportAnd Twitter:https://twitter.com/JimmyHinton12https://twitter.com/clarahintonIntro-- Film Glitch by Snowflake (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/56350 Ft: reusenoiseOutro-- I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/41284

In this interview, I speak to Kristin Peterson, media studies professor at Boston College, about her book Unruly Souls: The Digital Activism of Muslim and Christian Feminists. We discuss the role social media has had in creating a counterpublic that challenges the dominant cultural narratives established by white evangelicalism and other religions. Her book covers aspects of #ChurchToo and other online movements that fall under the broad "deconstruction" umbrella, as well as how Muslims utilize media to critique their own traditions. It's a fascinating conversation and helps contextualize why these conversations that play out online matter--and why a media lens is helpful to understand them. _ Support my work via a subscription to The Post-Evangelical Post.
