Welcome back to another episode of Restoring the Soul with Michael John Cusick. Today, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Rodney Reeves for a captivating conversation about spirituality, imagination, and the profound teachings from the Gospel of John. In today's episode, we'll be delving deep into the passage of a remarkable woman who, unlike the disciples, doesn't need Jesus' direct instruction to do what's right, demonstrating how she naturally embodies the word and draws others to Christ. We'll also grapple with the incarnate word—how John's gospel invites us into a present kingdom with eternal life embodied in Jesus. Rodney shares his perspective on the transformative power of storytelling in preaching and studying the Bible, inviting us to imagine the incarnation in our lives.Lastly, Michael and Rodney will traverse through the imagery and themes of the Book of Revelation, revealing the critical message that good and God will triumph in the end. Doctor Reeves will draw us into a deeper understanding of this victory through faithful witness and loving sacrifice.Discover how the barrier built by porn addiction can become a bridge to abundant life. What if lust for porn is really a search for true passion? In a world where there are 68 million searches for pornography every day and where over 70 percent of Christian men report viewing porn in the last year, it's no surprise that more and more men struggle with an addiction to this false fantasy. Common wisdom says if they just had more willpower or more faith, their fight would be over. A Sunday sermon by Pastor Brett Deal. As we look forward to Labor Day, a time together with family and friends and much deserved rest, as a congregation we will continue exploring what communing in the Word together looks like. As we fire up our grills and relax with our dear ones, there are plenty of things we can apply to our fellowship as followers of Jesus. Our fellowship as followers of Jesus is more than a song here and a sermon there. Our fellowship is formed and forged in the love of Christ and with His people. Like a loaded plate with all kinds of delicious food, we will begin tasting our way through the epistle of 1 John. His message to the church is perfectly seasoned with everything we need to help us understand our lives in the light and love of God.  And to help us digest the solid meat of this week's meal, we will make use of Rodney Reeves' recent Spirituality According to John, in which he structures his study through hearing, confessing, incarnating and abiding in the Word. Like a cold drink in hand fizzing with flavor, this will also help us prepare our hearts to celebrate God's Word starting in 1 John 1.1-4:Are we hearing the Word when we gather together? Are we confessing the Word with our brothers and sisters in Christ as well as those who have yet to know Jesus as Lord? Are we incarnating the Word everywhere we go?Are we abiding in the Word, being in the presence of the Lord and radiating His nearness when we are with others? Can't wait to see you this holiday weekend and celebrate

Today in the Word Devotional

As a child, many of us were taught to kneel beside our bed to pray. But we can also pray while standing, walking, running, or even lying down. It is not the position we are in when we pray that matters; what is most important is the attitude of the heart. In today’s passage, Jesus describes the proper heart posture, not just for prayer but for all our righteous acts. Jesus warns, “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven” (Matt. 6:1). The fault Jesus highlights is one of motivation. The problem is not that people see us but that we do these things “to be seen by them.” Instead of being an act of worship or a form of communication, this kind of prayer turns into a public performance. As a negative example, Jesus pointed to the practice of those who stood in prominent places such as street corners or the synagogues. This is a reference to the practice of some of the Pharisees, whom commentator Rodney Reeves calls “the fashion models of righteousness.” As a second negative example, Jesus mentioned the pagans “who keep on babbling” in the hope that they could bowl God over with their long prayers (v. 7). The solution Jesus offers is to avoid putting our righteous practice on display. Instead of seeking the spotlight, Jesus urged His listeners to “go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen” (v. 6). Rather than attempting to manipulate God with your words, open your heart and simply ask God for what you need. >> Your prayer does not have to be a work of art or a formal speech. It does not even need to be very long. You are not putting on a performance for God’s benefit or for anyone else. When you pray, simply say what is on your heart, and God will hear.

Dr. Rodney Reeves is senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and has published, among other things, Spirituality According to John, Spirituality According to Paul, and (with David Capes and E. Randolph Richards) Rediscovering Paul. Although often interpreted individualistically, John's comment about the “One greater” in 1 John 4:4 is addressed to the plural “you.” It is a matter of overcoming the world together.

“I think what we all need is a redemption story. That's basically what the human heart longs for.” - Dr. Rodney ReevesOn this episode, Michael welcomes Dr. Rodney Reeves, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Rodney is also the author of 6 books, including what he & Michael are going to be discussing today, “Spirituality According to John.” Through all of the Apostle John's works, a consistent message is woven: being a Christian is about abiding in Christ and in his words. The Gospel of John, the epistle of 1 John, and the book of Revelation all begin in the same way: by pointing to the importance of knowing the Word, both written and incarnate. Rodney combines exegesis with spiritual reflection to explore how the only biblical writer to employ three different genres presents a consistent vision of Christian spirituality.HELPFUL RESOURCES:Spirituality According to John
