Originally published Dec. 12, 2023Have you ever asked yourself the question: Why should I get out of bed? In today's episode, host Jason Wieland, Content Development Pastor at Saddleback Church, talks about his favorite book of 2023. It's called On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden & Gift of Living by Alan Noble. This short, 104-page book is rich in its look at anxiety, depression, and other hardships of life. It doesn't sugarcoat the realities of suffering. For anybody who may not struggle with these issues themselves, Dr. Noble paints an important picture of what life is truly like for those in this daily fight. However, this book is truly one of hope as it reminds us of the reality of our good creation, the presence of our good Creator and the truth that your life is a testimony of that goodness - whether you are having a good day or not.Join Jason as he dives into this impactful, important book. In today's honest and insightful conversation, Michael sits down with Dr. Dan Allender—a renowned therapist, author, and longtime mentor—to discuss Dan's latest book, The Deep-Rooted Marriage, co-authored with Dr. Steve Call and enriched by the wisdom and vulnerability of their wives, Becky Allender and Lisa Call. This episode isn't just a discussion about techniques for a better marriage—it's a candid exploration of the real, raw journey through conflict, trauma, shame, and, ultimately, transformation inside marriage. Dan and Michael reflect on how our histories, wounds, and unmet needs shape our relationships; why true change can't happen without naming the truth; and how attunement, humility, and honest confession become the very soil in which a marriage can deeply root and flourish. You'll hear moving stories from Dan's own marriage, laughter about old cars and TV shows, and wisdom about the tension between safety and danger in vulnerability. It's a heartfelt look at how marriages are shaped not only by their joys but also by their hardest moments—and why learning to bless, be curious, and face the deep roots beneath our conflicts is the path to lasting intimacy and hope.Support the showENGAGE THE RESTORING THE SOUL PODCAST:- Follow us on YouTube - Tweet us at @michaeljcusick and @PodcastRTS- Like us on Facebook- Follow us on Instagram & Twitter- Follow Michael on Twitter- Email us at info@restoringthesoul.com Thanks for listening!

How Your Identity Impacts Your Self-Esteem

Doable Discipleship

We've done many episodes of Doable Discipleship about identity, largely because it's such an important topic in a world that constantly tries to fight for the right to control your identity, but also because there's just so much to talk about, particularly from the Christian perspective. And today I want to add two more facets to that conversation: self-esteem and bias. The premise: who you think you are creates a bias, even an unconscious one, in how you receive input about your life and how you view other people. It affects how you handle success, failure, advice, friendships, and so much more. Christians have the opportunity to anchor their identity, and therefore their bias and self-esteem in two key biblical truths. To talk to us about bias, self-esteem, and these biblical truths is Dr. Erin Devers, professor of psychology and Indiana Wesleyan University and author of the new book, The Unbiased Self. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. There's something we all experience that we usually can't quite put our finger on or find the right words to describe. We hear the sermons about what the Christian life should be like. We read the books and hear the podcasts and we're told what a life lived for and with God is like – a life of joy, of ease, of clear direction, of no worry. And yet . . . it doesn't always go that way. Many people, maybe you right now, hear these things and think “why isn't my life like that? I love God, I try to follow his Word and yet my life is hard and sad. Why isn't the Christian life I hear about my experience?” Michael John Cusick calls this experience, “the gap” or “the delta”. And it's a very common thing for Christians to experience.  Today host Jason Wieland is joined by Michael John Cusick to talk about his new book, Sacred Attachment: Escaping Spiritual Exhaustion and Trusting in Divine Love. In this powerful episode of The Super Human Life, Coach Frank Rich sits down with author and licensed professional counselor Michael John Cusick to explore the deep connection between addiction, intimacy, and the search for God. Michael unpacks how pornography creates an illusion of connection while masking a deeper longing for intimacy. He reveals how all addictions can be seen as a pursuit of false intimacy and discusses the critical role that community plays in healing. The conversation also delves into the impact of mother wounds on men's relationships and their susceptibility to addiction, as well as the common misconception that marriage can "fix" addiction. Michael shares his personal journey from addiction to healing, offering wisdom for men navigating shame, trauma, and emotional disconnection. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking true freedom from addiction and emotional struggles. Michael emphasizes the importance of connection, vulnerability, and identity in the healing process, while also addressing the unique challenges individuals face within faith communities. Key Takeaways: ✅ Addiction is often a symptom of a deeper longing—one rooted in the search for connection and meaning ✅ Sexual desire is tied to a longing for transcendence and union with God. ✅ Pornography offers an illusion of intimacy but lacks real connection. ✅ Many addictions stem from a need for false intimacy. ✅ Community is essential for true recovery and transformation. ✅ Platforms like OnlyFans create a deceptive sense of real relationships. ✅ Mother wounds can drive men toward unhealthy sources of tenderness and validation. ✅ Marriage does not automatically resolve addiction—healing is a journey of self-discovery and connection. ✅ Sobriety is different from freedom; true freedom is a change in desire, not just behavior. ✅ Shame is one of the biggest barriers to healing and must be addressed for real transformation. Today, I'm excited to bring you a conversation that gets to the core of what it means to be human - to grapple with pain, trauma, and the longing to be truly seen and loved. My guest is Michael John Cusick, author of the new book "Sacred Attachment," and he's here to share his deeply personal journey of moving from a place of fear and shame into an embodied experience of God's love and security. Michael reframes the concept of sin, not as moral failure, but as the mishandling of our pain. This shift opens up a whole new avenue for understanding the human condition and the path to healing. He unpacks the five "W's" of brokenness - wretchedness, weakness, woundedness, warfare, and wiring - illuminating the complex, multi-layered nature of the struggles we all face. But this isn't just an intellectual exercise. Michael grounds his insights in his own life story. His life became a journey, as he wrestled with the fear that God was displeased with him, only to be met with an unexpected embrace of love and acceptance. Michael's exploration of Jesus' own secure attachment to the Father, and how that provides a model for us to follow, even in the midst of our own pain and trauma was particularly insightful. He emphasizes the importance of relational encounter, of being seen, soothed and held, in order to move from intellectual belief to embodied experience of God's love. This is a rich, nuanced conversation that challenges us to confront the deepest parts of ourselves, to acknowledge our brokenness, and to open ourselves up to the transformative power of love. There is profound wisdom here for anyone seeking to live a more whole, integrated life. Get ready to receive the love of God. Michael John Cusick is the CEO and founder of Restoring the Soul, an intensive counseling ministry in Denver. He is a licensed professional counselor, spiritual director, and former assistant professor of counseling at Colorado Christian University.
