On this week's episode of Women Speak — a segment on Northeast Newscast — hosts Northeast News Editor-in-Chief, Julia Williams and former Missouri House Representative for District 19 Ingrid Burnett sat down with Kansas City Mayor Pro Tem, Ryana Parks-Shaw to continue our series on women who influence policy. Parks-Shaw is currently in her second year of a four-year term as mayor pro tem. She is a Kansas City native — having graduated from Ruskin High School (7000 E. 111th St.) before obtaining a Bachelor of Science from Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., and a Master of Science from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo. Throughout this episode, she discusses her journey as a policy influencer in Kansas City — including pivotal women in her life who have inspired her along the way. Burnett and Williams additionally discuss happenings within the Missouri State House in Jefferson city — some of which include current bill proposals. The hosts also delve into details regarding the upcoming Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) School Board Election on April 8, from election day resources to absentee voting information. Parks-Shaw shares information regarding ballot question one, “Capital Improvements Sales Tax — Public Safety,” and what it could mean for Kansas City if passed. The school bond presentation and informational session, which Williams mentioned, will be held from 5 to 6 p.m., on Wednesday, April 2 at the Kansas City Public Library's North-East branch in “Meeting Room A.” Music used within Women Speak episodes is a song called “Ready to Talk” by Kansas City local artist Honeybee and the group's lead female vocalist, Makayala Scott. Ready to Talk is off of Honeybee's first studio extended play (EP) record, “Saturn Return,” which was released in March 2024. Honeybee is currently preparing to release its latest single on March 28, “I Wish I knew You Then.” Honeybee tracks are available for streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, TIDAL and Youtube Music. *Disclaimer* Ready to Talk and any future Honeybee songs used by The Northeast News within the Women Speak podcasts are courtesy of and approved by Makalya Scott and Honeybee under proper copyright law. Concerns were raised about Moore's performance and relationships but were dismissed. His exit from the ERLC appeared coordinated, without board consent. Inside Out – Avoid “sketchy views” about God – 10/04/23

If our understanding of who God is and how He works in the world doesn't have a foundation in the Bible, it's possible that we hold “sketchy views.” A great many things work to pull us away from Jesus Christ. That's not news. “The Scripture teaches us that the world, the flesh, and the devil are all going to be agents of temptation for us,” says Dr. Daniel DeWitt. The pull away from Christ can feel stronger if we've based our view of who God is on something other than Scripture.  “I think that often Christian young people will make their experience in the world the chief authority by which they think about God,” he says. “And I'm reminded of a line from a Christian rap artist who said, ‘God made you in His image, and He didn't ask you to return the favor.'” He believes that the way we think about God is the most important thing about us. DeWitt says we develop poor theology, or what he calls “sketchy views,” if our faith is unexamined or unfounded. We also have “sketchy views” if our beliefs are true but neglect love, or if they contradict the Bible.  “We need to test everything by Scripture. And that means even the teachings of people we really might appreciate or enjoy. We always want to come back to Scripture as our ultimate authority.”  We all know people who are deconstructing their faith--pulling it apart and examining what they've believed. DeWitt says the process may help them jettison aspects of the faith that were not actually based on what God says about Himself in Scripture.  “If they're deconstructing an unfounded faith or an unbiblical faith, the deconstruction could be helpful to the degree that the goal is, in the end, to construct something new, and more reliable,” he says. “My prayer would be for young people that they're working through these issues because, Lord willing, this is God's way of refining what they truly do believe. And if on the back end there's no belief at all, may the Gospel be demonstrated as the power of God to save them.”    Dr. Daniel DeWitt is a senior fellow at Missouri's Southwest Baptist University and leads the Center for Worldview and Culture. His newest book is Sketchy Views: A Beginner's Guide to Making Sense of God.Learn more about Dr. Daniel DeWitt and his writings here and here.

In this episode, we're chatting with Serg Lupescu, the big heart and brilliant mind behind Legion Manor LLC, an assisted living home. Serg kicked off his journey in healthcare at Southwest Baptist University, diving headfirst into a nursing degree. Before he even dreamt of running his own place, he put in the hours as a certified nurse assistant, getting a ground-level view of the industry. But Serg wasn't content to stop there. He dreamt bigger, taking the bold step of opening his own residential assisted living home. Though he found out pretty quickly that this business wasn't a walk in the park, he stuck with it, learning everything he needed to make a solid go of it. Now, he's pooling all that knowledge and experience into the Legion Assisted Living Academy. It's a one-stop-shop for folks keen to follow in his footsteps and open their own place. Serg is the guy who's been there, done that, and is now ready to pass on the torch to the next batch of aspiring entrepreneurs. Join us as we sit down with Serg to get the lowdown on his journey, and pick up some golden nuggets of wisdom on making it in the healthcare industry. Learn more here: https://valleyalfventures.com/

At Carey, Huebner progressed from instructor to assistant professor to director of admissions and recruiting. Huebner's ascent into higher education administration really began at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee in the early 2000's as he moved consecutively from assistant professor and director of speech and debate to become dean of admissions, vice president of enrollment management, and vice president of student affairs. Moving to Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 2010, Huebner was responsible for all student services of the College and began the pursuit of a presidency. Story of failure: Losing my composure during competition (and cursing). My name is Jeni Hopkins and I was a coach for 24 years and have loved every minute of it.  Yes, of course, there are a lot of highs and lows in coaching, but the rewards and the privilege of working with such outstanding student-athletes, assistant coaches, managers, athletic directors, athletic trainers, officials, table workers, and many more are what I valued the most.  The intangibles and intricacies of sports deserve to be explored and a voice needs to be given to coaches, players, officials, and others that play such vital roles in the arena of sports. This is about giving that voice.  I am also currently the Media Coordinator of the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association and have a lot of pride in the promotional mission and advocacy of that organization for coaches. I have been on their executive board for over 20 years. Check out our website at www.mobca.org.I am also a proud member, and president, of the board of directors of the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame.  This is a non-profit organization that recognizes excellence in sports and in turn raises funds for youth sports. Our website is www.springfieldhof.com.Another adventure is that I am a color analyst for Mediacom and MSHSAA.tv and am thrilled to work with them during basketball season while getting a front row seat to the best basketball! I have also worked games, both play by play and color analyst, for Evangel University, Southwest Baptist University and Drury University.  I also broadcast the Norm Stewart Classic on ESPN3 from Mizzou Arena. I love broadcasting basketball and have also enjoyed bringing volleyball and track and field to the air waves, too.I also am the founder and director of a basketball luncheon every two weeks, Court Talk, during basketball season.  This luncheon promotes basketball in Springfield and includes all of the city high school and college coaches, plus Southwest Baptist and College of the Ozarks. Welcome to episode forty-nine of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I am delighted to be joined by a friend and former colleague from my Azusa Pacific days, Dr. Adam Winn. Adam is Associate Professor of Christian Studies at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Texas. He's an alum of Southwest Baptist University and has both MA and PhD degrees from Fuller Seminary. He is the author of four books on the New Testament and numerous academic articles and essays. His primary research interests include the Gospels of Mark and Luke, the Roman imperial world of the first century, and the Christology of the early Christian church. His passion is helping people read and interpret the Gospels in the light of the context and culture from which they emerged.I have been especially excited to talk with Adam about his very interesting book on the Gospel of Mark entitled, Reading Mark's Christology Under Caesar: Jesus the Messiah and Roman Imperial Ideology – published by IVP Academic. In recent decades, biblical scholars have found the Gospel of Mark deeply interesting and, as you will hear, I think reading Mark in the light of what was going on – especially in Rome – at the time, can open our understanding to the life and mission of Jesus in new ways. I'm really thankful for the deep exegetical work that scholars like Adam commit themselves to, for the sake of the church. This conversation digs deep into the text of Mark's Gospel, but not for the sake of the academic exercise itself, but out of the deep desire to know Christ more. I hope you will pick up that spirit from this conversation and be edified by it.

And at times you may find your beliefs challenged the way you think, your relationships, your attitude, your finances, and begin to question why you believe what you believe. But this isn't always a bad thing. Cleaning out the backpack of beliefs occasionally can prove to be a good thing when you can get rid of beliefs that are preventing you from making important decisions in your life. Have you heard the term, "We are a Christian Nation, founded on Christian Ideals?" Our guest this week, Brian Kaylor, would likely take issue with a comment like that, and guess what...He's also a Christian Pastor, Editor, and President of one of the oldest Christian publications in America called Word & Way, founded in 1896. Brian, unlike many evangelicals in America, is steadfast in his efforts to ensure that separation of church and state rings true for believers and non-believers. It's not uncommon to find Brian testifying alongside atheist and satanist when state legislatures are pushing for Bible literacy classes in public schools, or when there's a bill giving special rights to collegiate religious student associations. This is an amazing chat and discussion that I hope you will enjoy! Check out this short documentary that features Brian Kaylor "Is America a Christian nation? Before devoting his time to his assisted living home, Serg obtained a degree from Southwest Baptist University in nursing, working as a certified nurse assistant in his earlier years. Shortly after, Serg furthered his passion in the healthcare industry and pursued his goal in opening a residential assisted living home. Along his journey, Serg discovered that the industry is far more complex and that success is not easily achieved. Through his time working in the industry he learned the tools needed to guarantee a promising business, in which he passionately wants to share with others. It was formerly known as Kush Bottles.Nick became CEO 5 years ago and has grown the business dramatically – from under $2M to nearly $150M in sales and the team from less than 12 to more than 250 people, as well as diversified the business into five categories and operations in multiple states and countries.  For a non-tech company, that is still tech company growth rates!Prior to KushCo, he helped co-found another successful company here, BigRentz, a leader in online commercial equipment rental.  He remains on their board today.  He also has a number of other business holdings.I have to note that he was captain of his college basketball team at Southwest Baptist University, which was a dream I always had growing up in Indiana, playing basketball.  He was also a great student there, graduating with high distinction. Like prior guests at Accelerate OC, I think he was born an entrepreneur.  He had his first business shortly after college, joining a friend (and now longtime business partner) in one called Pack My Dorm, which they successfully sold in 2010.With KushCo, Nick has become an expert on the cannabis industry, and he speaks and writes about it often in mainstream media and at events. We had a good discussion about the value of developing industry expertise as an entrepreneur.Nick and his team have a front row seat in the evolving and fast-growing cannabis industry. No matter how you feel about it, it's an exciting and dynamic industry with a lot of change in it.

We’re talking about the 340B Program with Karen White, the CEO of Missouri Highlands Healthcare, Dennis Shelby, the CEO of Wilson Medical Center, and Austin Gillard, CEO of Clay County Medical Center.  Karen, Dennis and Austin were 2018-2019 Rural Health Fellows with the National Rural Health Association (NRHA), where they focused on rural preparedness, culminating in a Policy Paper presented to and adapted by the NRHA Rural Health Congress.   “In our study, it was determined that 55% of rural hospitals would close if it were not for the 340B Program.”   Dennis Shelby has worked in healthcare for 40 years.  He began his career as a medical social worker and for the last 26 years, has held various hospital CEO positions.  His journey involved stents in top leadership positions in psychiatric, rehabilitation and rural hospitals.  He believes healthcare is a calling and ministry.  He received the 2014 Custom Learning System “Inspiring Administrator” Award and was the 2016 Founders Award recipient for that same organization for over 30 years of committed leadership in the healthcare field.  He is the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Becker’s “50 Rural Hospital CEO’s To Know.”  In 2018 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award for his leadership in healthcare from Hope International University.  He and his wife of 44 years, Judy, have two amazing daughters and 4 grandchildren.  “We have to be strong proponents for each other. We cannot be silos.”  Karen R. White joined Missouri Highlands Health Care, a Federally Qualified Health Center, in March 2009 as the Chief Financial Officer.  Through her drive, integrity and work ethic, she provided financial leadership, growing the organization into a sustainable & viable health care provider while overcoming significant financial challenges. In October 2014, she furthered her passion for community health by stepping into the CEO position for Missouri Highlands.  Since that time, she has led the organization through transformation & growth, embracing the challenges of providing primary care in seven rural counties in the southern Missouri Ozarks region. Ms. White has continually sought unique care delivery options to better serve the rural population and while focusing on breaking down existing silos in providing care across the continuum of care community.    White, a certified public accountant (CPA), obtained her Bachelors of Applied Science in Administration with concentration in Marketing and Management from Southwest Baptist University in 1994 and her Masters in Accountancy from Missouri State University in 2007. During and after college she worked in healthcare, banking, retail, management and Social Services prior to obtaining her CPA license and working in public accounting.   Away from work she enjoys time with her 6-year-old daughter, Maive, floating the crystal clear waters of the Current River and roaming the hills of the Ozarks on her Harley-Davidson motorcycle. White’s parents are credited with instilling in her a strong work ethic, drive to succeed and commitment to serving others. “Growing up, my parents served as strong role models of integrity and faith. They never compromised their message of service, hard work and education as the path to success. This coupled with my desire to not have to feed 250 head of cattle for the rest of my life drove me to succeed.”  “340B is vital for our rural to stay viable…”   Austin Gillard was raised in Overland Park, Kansas. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and received a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Missouri.  Austin’s background in healthcare started in 2008 as a physician recruiter.
