I can remember being a young 7th or 8th grader. Our school was in Central Florida and in the 60’s, it did not have air conditioning. There were swing out crank windows from ceiling to almost the floor. They would open out and ventilate the room. I tried really hard to keep my attention on the math lesson, but I could hear the other students out on the playground or something as simple as a dragonfly flying around outside would distract me and before long, I was swinging on the swings or flying around with the dragonfly. It is easy to lose focus on what is important. Jesus was in Bethany, near Jerusalem, and was in the house of Martha, a friend of Jesus. Martha, Mary and Lazarus were sisters and brother and were friends of Jesus. While Jesus was there, Mary was sitting by his feet listening to him teach and Martha was busy with meal preparations. One task was urgent and another important. The urgent task can hijack the important one every time, if we let it. Jesus shares about the two and it is a lesson on what we can do to stay on the mission.

So why does God use weakness and helplessness in our lives? Because that is what keeps us touching first, what keep us operating out of devotion, dependence and discipleship. If we don’t touch first each day then our tendency is to get distracted and busy, and look what happens. Someone who loves the Lord, but feels distant from the Lord. Someone who loves the Lord, but easily angered with His people. Someone who trusts the Lord, but worried and bothered about much. Instead of helplessness forcing us there, let’s just choose it. Get up, pray, and read your Bible at the feet of Jesus.
In thinking about God's will for our lives, our minds tend to automatically go to our job, our family, where we are to live or how we are to be involved in ministry. However, there is an aspect of our lives that God also wants to focus on when it comes to His will. Our finances. God is the source of our blessings but where do those blessings go? How do we know who to give to? Truthfully, it can be overwhelming with so many pressing needs around us. But this week as we continue in our sermon series in learning about God's will, we meet some friends of Jesus who show us the importance of generosity. We see where our generosity comes from and how we should view the needs around us through the eyes of Jesus.
