The Backpack Effect – Travel Light, Live Free in Peace

Holiness for the Working Day

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 7, 2025 13:23

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time, 2025 In this episode, Fr. James reflects on The Backpack Effect—the paradoxical truth that the more you travel, the lighter you pack… not just in your luggage, but in life. Drawing from Jesus' instructions to the 72 disciples in Luke 10, we explore how the spiritual life calls us to travel light, to surrender control, and to cultivate deep interior peace through trust in God's providence.   This isn't just a homily—it's a call to mission. But before we can share peace, we must receive it. Before we can preach the Good News, we must experience it ourselves.   The Backpack Effect: Life isn't about how much you carry, but how free you are to move. Mission as Formation: Jesus sends us not to use us, but to form us in freedom and trust. Detachment as Freedom: Let go of stuff, stories, and control—so you can receive peace and purpose. 1. Detach from What Weighs You Down Physical Clutter: Ask, “What do I own that owns me?” Let go of one thing a day. Emotional Baggage: Identify a wound or story you keep reliving. Write it down. Burn it. Surrender it. Need for Control: Try a Trust Fast—for one day, don't seek answers. Just act in faith.   2. Cultivate Interior Peace (Inspired by Jacques Philippe) Peace is not the fruit of calm circumstances—but of radical trust. Begin each day: “Lord, not my will but Yours be done.” Daily 3-Minute Peace Check: What upset me today? What can I do, and what must I entrust? Jesus, I trust in You. Give me Your peace.

Leaving America E5: Spotlight on Honduras!

Send us a textChristina Korpi, fresh out of college with degrees in Spanish and psychology, arrived in Honduras with practical preparations but couldn't anticipate how profoundly this Central American nation would challenge her American perspective. The cultural adjustments began immediately. Despite Spanish fluency from previous stays in Spain and Mexico, Honduras presented its own linguistic nuances. More surprising were social expectations—Christina packed practical clothes for the tropical climate but discovered Hondurans prioritized style and formal dress despite the heat. Even medical norms differed dramatically, exemplified by her startling experience with a dentist who diagnosed eight non-existent cavities. What emerges most powerfully through Christina's story is the stark contrast between American individualism and Honduran community-orientation. Where Americans schedule playdates, Hondurans gather spontaneously in communal spaces. Where Americans isolate in climate-controlled homes, Hondurans live predominantly outdoors. Where Americans buy fully-constructed homes through mortgages, Hondurans traditionally purchased land first, then built room-by-room as finances allowed—though Christina notes with concern how American-style credit systems have increasingly penetrated Honduras in recent years. We also discuss the ethical dimensions of American expatriation. With average Hondurans earning $600-700 monthly while American retirees live on several thousand, economic disparities become starkly visible in places like Roatan, where luxury developments for foreigners neighbor impoverished communities. Christina emphasizes awareness and engagement with local economic realities when considering relocation. For those contemplating international moves, Christina's advice centers on openness rather than expectation. Success abroad requires genuine engagement with cultural differences—not attempting to recreate American standards. Three years in Honduras taught her that what appears as American convenience often masks disconnection, while what might seem like Honduran simplicity fosters deeper community bonds and authentic joy.-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Monday morning, the 23rd of June, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go straight to the Gospel of Luke 9:3: “And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece.” I think the Lord is telling you and me this morning that we need to travel lightly in this world. You know, sometimes I marvel when I travel in an aeroplane, especially going on a long trip overseas, and I sit quietly in my seat, and I watch the things that people bring onboard onto that aeroplane, how they push and shove and try and stuff their bags into that little overhead compartment. They are red-faced, some of them are perspiring, they are totally stressed out and they are just totally overdoing it. And you know, the thing is, half of that stuff they carry, they won't even use. We need to be very careful. I am not just talking about physical things. I am talking about spiritual things as well, stressing and worrying. Often when I go to a farm dispersal sale where maybe a farmer has decided to stop farming and retire and they have an auction, and you walk around the yard and they have all kinds of implements to sell, and you will see a heap of chain. Now a farmer can use chain, chain to pull a tractor out of a ditch, chain to tie up a gate, and they will make a bid on a heap of chain, ordinary chain. They will buy that chain and they will take that chain to their farm and it will lie there until that farmer is not farming anymore and then someone else will buy it! I have seen it! I have done it!We need to start being more careful that we don't overload ourselves with things which are of no consequence. We need to focus on Heaven - on Heaven, where no rust or moth will destroy our possessions, where no thief will steal. We need to start storing up riches in Heaven where we will be able to use them forever and ever. I am talking about prayer, I am talking about reading your Bible. I am talking about getting up in the morning and spending ample time with God. We need to really be very careful how we use our time and don't waste it on things of this earth that we will never use.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.

Season 2, Episode 4 | "We're so used to being consumers, we're consumed, and we think it's normal. Freedom is to release."In this episode of Strong & Awake, Dane and Mitch explore the concept of "Traveling Light". They discuss how overpacking—whether it's physical items for a trip or emotional and mental burdens—can weigh us down and distract us from what truly matters. They emphasize the importance of making conscious choices to carry only what you need and the profound freedom that comes from letting go of excess of all kinds. By front-loading the effort to decide what is essential, you can engage more fully with your reality and experience a more fulfilling life. Join the conversation to learn practical steps for decluttering your life and mind, and discover the power of voluntary discomfort in achieving true freedom.Chapters:00:00 Introduction04:02 Anchors to Reality09:43 Have What You Need12:36 The Burden of Mental and Emotional Weight21:32 Backwards Strategies24:56 Limiting Optionality for Greater Freedom31:23 Action Steps for Traveling Light35:49 The Importance of CommunityMentions:Second Law of Thermodynamics: Mentioned in the context of entropy and energy dissipation.Stoicism: Referenced in relation to controlling one's response to events.Parkinson's Law: The adage that "work expands to fill the time available for its completion."Marie Kondo: Referenced for her method of decluttering Annie Leonard: Creator of the documentary "The Story of Stuff," which discusses consumerism and its environmental impact.Amazon: Mentioned in the context of consumer habits and the ease of acquiring goods.Greg McKeown: Author of "Essentialism," a book about focusing on what is truly essential.Ryan O'Neal (Sleeping at Last): Musician known for using creative constraints in his work.Anchor Actions:1. Simplify Your Environment: Start with one area of your life, such as your workspace or a junk drawer. Remove everything from that space, and only put back what you absolutely need. Donate, recycle, or throw away the rest. This physical act of decluttering can lead to mental clarity and a sense of freedom.2. Identify and Release Mental Burdens: Take a "mental inventory" while on a walk or during a quiet moment. Identify unresolved issues or relationships weighing you down. Commit to one action to address each burden, such as making a phone call, writing a letter, or having a necessary conversation.3. Adopt an Essentialist Approach to Daily Decisions: For the next week, consciously limit your choices. Use a smaller bag, reduce your wardrobe to a capsule collection, or set strict limits on daily tasks. Notice how fewer options can lead to greater focus and satisfaction.Join Us:Our Membership Community (MWOD) is where we embrace discomfort as a path to personal development. We no longer face any pressure to be, at least, nominally Christian. Today, a buffet of options and trending social media ideas purport to present what it means to be Christian. In our time, like in the days of the Colossian church, Apostle Paul addresses the idea of: 1) influence of well-intentions people with a legalistic perspective, and 2) gnosticism (finding salvation and escape from the material world by acquiring secret knowledge). Christian life is a journey not a destination...continue to walk with Jesus. #OnTheJourney #messiahyl

Bread and hunger are two things everyone knows about. If you are hungry today for something more: unconditional love, forgiveness, or grace...Jesus is ready for you. Bread may be ordinary and hunger commonplace, but there is nothing more extraordinary about the radical love of Christ. It is truly food for the journey #BreadOfLife #messiahyl

EP 142: THE "VICTIM" CARD

What's the difference between real and self-imposed victimization? Our thoughts! In the movie Room, as little Jack reads the line “For you see, out-of-the-way things had happened lately, that Alice begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible.” From the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, this girl's thoughts changed in one instant, although she had been, and most importantly had believed she was a victim. Compare this to times in your life when you felt like a victim, and how you acted… it was something someone said or did, or something happened. What's the difference between a victim and a victor?  The way we think. We see this in movies all the time, but we know that art imitates life. How can we retell our story in a way that we are victors, not victims? Even when (and especially when) we are also the villain. Things to consider if you've felt like a victim, a prisoner, when in fact the door was wide open: 1.     Own your part in having co-created your current state (bad choices, over eating, wrong guy, over spending) … feeling powerless! 2.     Decide to own your future journey from here on out 3.     Own when you don't take action… don't blame external circumstances 4.     Adapt (start) an attitude of “I got myself into this, I'll get myself out it” 5.     Use your influence, your VISION (The Power of Vision Ep 97), your VOICE… take action and SPEAK your future into being. 6.     It's ok to experience pain, but don't allow it to become part of you, don't carry it!  Travel LIGHT!!
