In this sermon the pastor explores the costly nature of forgiveness through a moving story of a mother's sacrifice and a careful reading of Hebrews 9. He explains how the old covenant required death and how Jesus' death fulfilled the will—paying the price for sin once and for all. Listeners are invited to respond by turning from sin, trusting Christ's finished work, and receiving God's cleansing forgiveness, with a practical challenge to address one area of personal struggle this week. ---- A Better Price Hebrews 9:15–28 Big Idea: Eternal life is a gift, but it cost everything. Introduction: A Criminal's Mom The Gift We Need - Forgiveness (Hebrews 9:15) Forgiveness is costly love. God's forgiveness of us cost Him His own Son's life. (John 3:16) Our forgiveness before a holy God cannot be sentimental or casual. The Cost God Required - A Death (Hebrews 9:16–23; Exodus 24:8) A last will and testament only goes into effect when someone dies. Sin cannot be brushed aside. Blood is the evidence of death. The Price Christ Paid - Once for All (Hebrews 9:24–28) Christ's sacrifice works backward. Christ's sacrifice works forward. It bankrupted heaven to save your soul. What if the problem with our words is deeper than just saying the wrong thing?In James 3:1-12, we are invited to feel the weight of the tongue. Our words matter in our journey of faith, our work, and our community. They can bless God while wounding people made in his likeness. They can become a fire that divides, or they can participate in the healing work of the Word made flesh.This sermon traces James' warning against using words for our own elevation, his call to be quick to listen and slow to speak, and his deeper invitation: not the suppression of words, but the transformation of character. We cannot tame our tongues through technique. It is my privilege to invite you to today's sermon podcast where Hebrews 9:1–14 is explored to show how the Old Testament tabernacle was a beautiful but limited shadow that pointed to Christ. The sermon contrasts religious rituals and barriers with Jesus' once-for-all sacrifice, explaining how his blood cleanses the conscience and gives permanent access to God. The message urges listeners to stop relying on dead works and ceremonies, to receive Christ's finished work, and to be freed to serve the living God. Practical next steps include identifying personal barriers to intimacy with God and seeking support to remove them. Resources and the full sermon outline are available at www.mvcnaz.org, and listeners are encouraged to find a church home that honors the authority of Scripture. ---- A Better Way In Hebrews 9:1–14 Bottom Line: A beautiful barrier is no match for Christ's open door. Introduction: A Grand Cathedral “What's stopping you from stepping fully into God's presence?” The Beautiful Barrier (Hebrews 9:1–10) Beauty that was only a shadow. The message: You Can't Come In! Where do you feel locked out—near religion, but not near God? A Temporary Way (Hebrews 9:7; Leviticus 16–17) The annual reset – Day of Atonement. Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. You are not saved by better performance. III. The Better Way In - Jesus (Hebrews 9:11–14) The greater tabernacle: God with us! The better sacrifice: cleansing the conscience Rest in Jesus' finished work. Conclusion / Call to Action Set aside 15 minutes this week to write down the barriers you feel are keeping you from God. Pray for Christ's help to overcome them. Help will come from the Bible and Christian friends.
