God gives believers spiritual gifts to build His church, encourage believers, and reach non-believers. Speaking in tongues and prophecy are two gifts that have caused controversy since the beginning of Christianity. Paul continues His theme of using these gifts for the purpose of loving God and others. Are we using our gifts in love to build up others or ourselves? In this sermon pastor Keith explains how God has given every Christian the capacity and responsibility to build up their church family by the use of their spiritual gifts in love. This is what healthy Christians do and how healthy churches function.

Chapter 14 of the first letter to the Corinthians is the most detailed account that we have of a worship service in the first century. Yet, churches today ignore many of the instructions we find there. Paul gives guidelines for the use of spiritual gifts and emphasizes that all that is done must be for the building up of the body of Christ, the believers. This sermon covers the first half of the chapter.

1st Corinthians chapter 14 moves us to the other side of the discussion on spiritual gifts and ministry in the church. The creamy “oreo” center was chapter 13 — the Love Chapter — and Paul lets them, and us, know that love must be the grand pursuit of our lives! Now we know that LOVE is superior to GIFTS, but…of all the gifts of the Spirit, which is most important and why? Miracles? Healings? The Corinthians put an over-emphasis on one very outward and obvious experience: speaking in an unknown language. Don’t worry, I will explain more tomorrow. Paul shows them why their focus is misplaced and where it should be. There are two words that dominate the section: understanding and edification (building up). What we learn from the discussion between Paul and the Corinthian church is that our church participation is not intended to be merely an independent emotional rush. It is much more important that we understand the things being said and what is being communicated so we can act on them and participate in what is happening. It has never been my experience, but some of you come from church backgrounds where the service (mass) was in Latin or even Greek in the Anglican or Catholic or Orthodox church. Others may have some familiarity with the pentecostal churches and the emphasis on the gift of tongues. Does this chapter have anything to say about that? Listen in and see!
God gives gifts to His church to build it up, not tear it apart. To that end, spiritual gifts must be used in love and for the good of the whole body.
Peter talks about the different levels of prophetic authority in the Bible and what that has to do with the gift of prophecy in 1 Corinthians. It is a good gift that encourages and builds up the church.

What kind of speech is most fitting in church? Speech that builds others up. Speaking in tongues is good but prophecy is better because it benefits others. Peter takes a tour through the first part of 1 Corinthians 14 and looks at what speaking in tongues is and how it is helpful.

There are many misconceptions about what church is and what church must be. There are equally as many misconceptions about its roles and importance in the lives of people. These types of misconceptions often make church look bad, boring, or unimportant. This shouldn’t be the case. This is a sermon series about church – what God commands of it and how you should participate.
