Jamie Cashen recounts how, at 15, he became a volunteer firefighter in Joshua, Texas and on Feb. 24, 1984 was trapped in a 2,500-acre grass fire with 18-foot flames and 42-mph winds, burning for 38 seconds after trying to help rescue a stalled water-truck driver; he describes crying out to God, being guided to the last firefighter on scene, and being airlifted to Parkland with 36% third-degree burns. Doctors discussed amputating his fingers, but his paraplegic mother prayed and insisted otherwise. He was transferred to the Shriners Burn Institute, avoided amputation, endured brutal treatment, and later faced social stigma from masks and splints. Cashen became a deputy fire marshal and a lifelong martial artist approaching a 10th-degree black belt. He uses his scars and platform to teach, witness, and encourage burn victims and children worldwide, emphasizing hope, prayer, and God's timing.
