The gospel shapes Christian marriage by cultivating godly character, mutual honor, and Christlike love. As husbands and wives embrace God's design for their relationship, they reflect His grace through humility, respect, and selfless service. In a world marked by self-interest, a Christ-centered marriage stands apart as a powerful testimony to the transforming work of Christ and the beauty of the gospel.

Submission in Marriage

Last week, our text was one that the many Christians, living in a fallen world under fallen governments, struggle to understand and follow. This week is hardly easier. To the outside world, commanding the submission of wives in marriage is unpopular at best, bigoted and misogynistic at worst. Yet many fail to truly hear what Peter is calling for. Let us listen well to him this morning, as Peter talks to us about submission in marriage. 1. A wife’s place 2. A wife’s purpose 3. A wife’s presentation 4. A wife’s pattern 5. A husband’s prayers

Christians live differently than the world in relation to their governing authorities, in the workplace, and with their spouses. I think the biggest similarity between these things might be the condition for submission - there isn’t any. Followers of Christ don’t respond to anything the way they once did. The only way believers can really submit to authority is when they are first trusting God. Married ladies – if you desire your attitude to be precious in the sight of God and beautiful in the sight of your husband, Peter says a gentle and quiet spirit are what brings it about. Husbands are to “live with [their wives] in an understanding way, showing honor” to them. Paul says that husbands should love their wives as their own bodies – caring for her, nourishing her, and cherishing her (Ephesians 5:25 & 28). In Christ, husbands and wives are equally heirs of the promise.

In the last few passages, Peter constructs a funnel of relationships. Government at the top, then society & workplace. Today is the narrow end of the funnel, in the home, with husbands and wives. Success in every relationship in the funnel requires two things: Honor/Submission, & Cherish. Submission has such a negative connotation, doesn’t it? Especially when we believe people don’t deserve it. Have you ever held resentment towards someone, Resentment so strong it turned to disdain? It seems the closer the relationship, the more likely resentment can take root, it becomes a cancer to the priesthood. The further into this relationship funnel the more difficult consistent submission/honor & cherishing becomes. At the top of the funnel, you can fake it for a bit, but the closer to the bottom the more our weakness is revealed. Following the example of Jesus consistently with my wife is far more difficult, and we’re both believers!
