The video "Set Apart: A Reflection on the Readings for the 2nd Week in Ordinary Time" by Deacon Dave & Layperson Lisa Show reflects on the readings for the second Sunday in ordinary time, focusing on Jesus's baptism and the call to holiness.Key takeaways from the reflection include:Sanctifying Grace (0:24-0:36): The Holy Spirit descends upon us at baptism, granting us sanctifying grace, which calls us to a life of holiness and makes us more like God.Called to be Set Apart (0:50-1:08): Similar to how Jesus is the Son of God, we are called to be set apart from the world, living in it but not being "of this world," but rather "of the supernatural world of God."Vessels of Light and Hope (1:23-1:37): In difficult times, we are reminded to be vessels of light, hope, and God's love to others.Holiness as Disposition and Obedience (1:42-2:09): Drawing from St. Thérèse of Lisieux, holiness is described as a disposition where our hearts, souls, and wills align with God, and it involves obedience to His will.Humility and Dependence on God (2:33-3:28): Holiness also means acknowledging our smallness and weakness, allowing God to carry us, as our strength comes through Christ. This calls for a great dependency on God and openness to growth in virtues.Growth in Prudence (3:37-4:38): The speaker shares a personal experience of growing in prudence, a virtue that helps us discern and act on what is good, particularly in communication like texts and emails.Strengthening Sanctifying Grace (4:42-5:00): Sanctifying grace is strengthened through prayer, acts of sacrifice, and acts of charity or love.Embracing God's Will (5:38-5:57): Being holy involves making an act of will towards what God desires, even when it means sacrificing our own desires. This practice makes it easier over time and helps us grow in virtue, allowing us to joyfully and easily do what is good.Call to Love (6:26-6:35): Ultimately, we are called to a life of holiness and love to all we encounter, striving to be like Jesus.
Before the gospel explains what we do, it tells us who we are.In this message from Romans 1:1–7, we see how Paul begins one of the most theologically rich books in Scripture not with commands or correction, but with identity. Before doctrine is explained, belonging is established. Before behavior is addressed, grace is declared.Romans opens by grounding us in three essential truths: who God is, who Jesus is, and who we are because of Him. The gospel is not a new idea, not a philosophy, and not self-improvement. It is God's promised plan, centered on Jesus Christ, and powerful enough to reshape our identity, obedience, and purpose. This message sets the foundation for the entire journey through Romans, reminding us that salvation begins with surrender, faith produces obedience, and those who belong to Christ are truly set apart for the gospel.Connect with us!Missioncity.church

Set Apart, Called, and Christ Revealed
Today we continue our Set Apart to Serve series, now hearing from the layperson's perspective! Tom Jennings and Blake Pieper join Andy and Sarah to talk about where they live and how they serve in their congregations, their experiences in the SAS Pilot Program and what they learned about church worker formation, how engaging youth in district or synod events and service trips has borne fruit for formation, how they see the Church supporting and mentoring youth to consider church work, and conversations they've had with youth and adults who might be considering church work. Christ's church will continue until He returns, and that church will continue to need church workers. Set Apart to Serve (SAS) is an initiative of the LCMS to recruit church workers. Together, we pray for workers for the Kingdom of God and encourage children to consider church work vocations. Here are three easy ways you can participate in SAS: 1. Pray with your children for God to provide church workers. 2. Talk to your children about becoming church workers. 3. Thank God for the people who work in your congregation. Glenn Rollins, is a manager with the Set Apart to Service initiative at the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. In that role he's responsible for finding those who are set apart to serve in the church. A pastor at his Lutheran grade school encouraged him to consider a career in church work and from there he attended Concordia University, Seward, NE. He taught at various levels of Lutheran education throughout the years and during his time in education he realized the need for better recruitment efforts to identify new teachers.
Many people followed Jesus. Not all of them were truly His disciples. In this episode, Pastor Jeff Cranston and Tiffany Coker walk through John chapter 6 to examine one of the most challenging truths of the Christian life: discipleship is more than separation from sin. It requires active devotion to Christ. As many followers walked away from Jesus when His teaching became difficult, Scripture reveals three distinct types of disciples: nominal disciples, real disciples, and false disciples. This conversation explores how each group responds to Jesus, why separation without devotion can be spiritually dangerous, and how believers today can honestly examine their own hearts. What We Discussed02:26 Why Biblical Separation Is MisunderstoodBiblical separation is not about isolation or moral superiority. Scripture calls believers to holiness through repentance and obedience, not excuse or compromise, as seen in 1 Peter 1:15–16 and Romans 6.05:22 Separation from Personal SinChristians are called to deal honestly with their own sin through repentance, confession, and intentional turning away, rather than minimizing or justifying sinful patterns.08:20 Why Small Sins Are Spiritually DangerousHidden or “small” sins do not remain contained. Like poison in a well, personal sin affects prayer, spiritual sensitivity, relationships, and a believer's witness.09:54 Separation from Unrepentant BelieversScripture teaches that fellowship should be withheld from those who profess Christ yet persist in unrepentant sin, both to protect the church and to call the individual to repentance, as outlined in 1 Corinthians 5:11.12:41 Why the Church Must Take Sin SeriouslyUnaddressed sin spreads within the church like yeast through dough 1 Corinthians 5:6.13:42 Separation from False TeachersBelievers are commanded to test teaching against Scripture and separate from those who distort the gospel or deny its truth, following the warning of 1 John 4:1.18:31 Separation from the World SystemScripture calls believers to resist the values and priorities of the world that oppose God, choosing spiritual transformation over conformity, as taught in 1 John 2:15 and Romans 12:2.19:43 Set Apart, Not IsolatedBiblical separation doesn't mean withdrawing from people. It means living with distinct loves, loyalties, and standards while remaining engaged, compassionate, and Christlike.“Discipleship is not about perfection. It is about bringing every area of life under the Lordship of Christ.” – Pastor Jeff CranstonWe love your feedback! If you enjoyed this episode, leave us a review. In many of our Set Apart to Serve conversations, we've spoken with church workers about their experience becoming and serving as a church worker. Today we begin conversations from another perspective: you, the people in the pew, laity and lay leaders on the role of church workers in your lives and why encouraging your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ to consider church work is important to you. Mark Wolters and Debbie Larson join Andy and Sarah for our Set Apart to Serve series to talk about their lives and service to the church, their own experiences with lay leadership and encouraging young people to consider church work, how LWML women have a special role to play in encouraging future church workers, the analogy of farming and harvest in relation to church worker recruitment and formation, and the role of the layperson in encouraging those around them to consider church work vocations. Christ's church will continue until He returns, and that church will continue to need church workers. Set Apart to Serve (SAS) is an initiative of the LCMS to recruit church workers. As we reach Day 14 of our consecration, we stand at a sacred hinge point in the fast. The initial momentum has settled, and God is now doing a quieter, deeper work of alignment. This teaching centers on Leviticus 20:7 and the call to sanctify ourselves again; not through striving or withdrawal from life, but through intentional devotion within it.This session explores what it truly means to be set apart: not isolated, but ordered; not pressured, but positioned. It is an invitation to re-yield our habits, thoughts, and desires to God as we close the first half of More God and prepare for what lies ahead. Through teaching and prayer, we return to the altar to be marked again for His purposes and realigned with His will. This moment is about consecration, clarity, and commitment; choosing to live intentionally set apart in a sacred season.

What does it mean for Christians to be “set apart”? Biblical separation is often misunderstood as isolation or spiritual superiority, but Scripture presents it as a call to holiness, faithfulness, and love for Christ. In this episode, Pastor Jeff and Tiffany continue their Practical Theology series by walking through four specific ways Scripture calls believers to live distinct lives while remaining engaged in the world. What We Discussed02:26 Why Biblical Separation Is Often MisunderstoodScripture calls believers to pursue holiness by dealing honestly with personal sin through repentance and obedience, not excuse or compromise (1 Peter 1:15–16; Romans 6:1–2, 12).05:22 Separation from Personal SinChristians are called to deal honestly with their own sin through repentance, confession, and mortification, not excuses or compromise.08:20 Why Small Sins Are Spiritually DangerousPersonal sin spreads like poison in a well. Even hidden or private sin affects prayer, witness, relationships, and sensitivity to God's Word.09:54 Separation from Unrepentant BelieversScripture teaches that fellowship should be withheld from those who claim Christ yet persist in unrepentant sin, both to protect the church and to call the believer to repentance (1 Corinthians 5:11).12:41 Why the Church Must Take Sin SeriouslyUnaddressed sin spreads within the body like yeast through dough, affecting truth, holiness, and the church's witness (1 Corinthians 5:6).13:42 Separation from False TeachersBelievers are commanded to test teaching against Scripture and separate from those who distort the gospel (1 John 4:1).17:11 How Separation from False Teachers Works PracticallyChristians should not endorse, platform, or partner with ministries that deny Scripture, compromise the gospel, or reject Christ's exclusivity.18:31 Separation from the World SystemScripture calls believers to resist the values and priorities of the world that oppose God, choosing transformation over conformity (1 John 2:15; Romans 12:2).19:43 Set Apart, Not IsolatedBiblical separation does not mean withdrawal from people. It means distinct loves, loyalties, and standards that reflect Christ while remaining engaged and compassionate.Book: Practical Christian Theology: Examining the Great Doctrines of the Faith by Floyd H. Barackman“Biblical separation is not about pride or fear or withdrawing from the world. It's about holiness, faithfulness, and love for the Lord.” – Pastor Jeff CranstonWe love your feedback! Thank you for watching All Peoples Church live stream. Pastor Jeff shares a teaching called: 2026 - The Year of Consecration - Set Apart. Service from January 11, 2026. For more information, please visit our website, www.allpeopleschurch.us or find us on social media!
Consecration does not end with just purification and sanctification. God consecrates his people for purpose and mission so that we may be faithful vessels of his Spirit and power. Therefore, as God consecrates our lives and our church, we must be ready to live with boldness and urgency for His glory.
The author of 1 Peter calls Jesus followers a holy priesthood (1 Pet 2:5). He commands them to be holy as God is holy.If the people of God are already living in exile, it could seem like this is just another hard thing: how can I live as a holy priest in a context of exile, oppression, and suffering? This is daunting unless holiness is not a standard to live up to, but a set apart path laid out for us with a guide who has chosen us to walk with him. The fundamental difference of this path versus any other is an experience of receiving mercy.- - Series Description -In this series we will explore 1 and 2 Peter, the Apostle Peter's two letters to the scattered first-century church in Asia Minor, who, though distant in time and place from ourselves, nonetheless share many of the very challenges that we do. We will consider what it means to be “third-culture people” who are chosen by God and called for his sake to live both fruitfully and prophetically in a land not our own
As followers of Christ, we are to take on the posture of a servant - serving God firs and foremost, and serving others second,

This Sunday we kicked off our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting with a call to stir up a deeper hunger and thirst for God. This message reminds us that fasting is not about what we're giving up, but about who we are pursuing. As we set ourselves apart in this season, we are choosing to make space for God to move, speak, and work in our lives in fresh ways. Recorded at Hope Church in Springfield, MO.

As we start a new year, It's important to take a look at the letter from Paul as he is teaching the ways of a new creation. He is telling how to live a life as a new believer. We must remember the very things that can set us apart from others. These are the ways we can grow closer to the Lord as we also learn to disciple others and be the hands and feet of Jesus. Be encouraged and find freedom by walking in obedience with the Lord. Holiness didn’t disappear…..it was replaced. In this Christmas episode of The Uncommon Christian Podcast, Jon Ellis confronts the quiet erosion of holiness in modern Christianity. Not legalism. Not perfectionism. But what Scripture actually means when it calls believers to live set apart, not as an image to protect, but an identity to walk in. Christmas didn’t come to make us comfortable, it came to make us holy. And when holiness is redefined or avoided, devotion fades, obedience delays, and spiritual hunger slowly dies. In this episode, you’ll discover: ● Why holiness feels outdated in today’s culture ● How Christmas Christianity celebrates Jesus without surrendering to His lordship ● What holiness is, and what it is not ● How to return to a set-apart life without legalism, fear, or exhaustion This message is pastoral, prophetic, and deeply practical, calling believers back to identity, obedience, and a faith worth the cost. Holiness didn’t disappear, it was replaced. In this Christmas episode, Jon Ellis exposes how cultural Christianity celebrates Jesus without surrendering to Him, and why being set apart is still worth the cost. Holiness isn’t a burden, it’s a rescue.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12, God's will is not framed around finding the right job, city, or spouse, but around becoming holy - set apart in love. The passage reveals both definitive sanctification (already chosen and made holy in Christ) and progressive sanctification (growing more and more into that holiness), and then presses that identity into two intensely practical arenas: sex and work. In a Greco-Roman culture where adultery, prostitution, and cultic sex were normal, believers are called to a radically different sexual ethic that springs from their God-given value and the costly love of Christ displayed at the cross and pictured in Hosea's relentless love for Gomer. At the same time, in a community tempted to idleness and “busybody” living while waiting for Jesus' return, they are called back to quiet, faithful labor that refuses to burden others and instead reflects the God who never stops working for His glory and their good. Underneath both areas is the same heartbeat: those who are “loved by God and chosen” are to live out that love in their bodies and their jobs so that the watching world sees what kind of Lover and Master they belong to.
"Set Apart for His Glory" explores what it truly means to live a life set apart—not just in title, but in daily practice and purpose. Through Scripture and honest reflection, Elder Elliotte Pearson invites us to examine the gap between professing to know God and actually representing Him with our lives, and he challenges us to surrender old patterns, embrace transformation that comes from intimacy with God, and respond to His call with willing obedience. If you've ever wondered what holiness looks like beyond behavior, and what God really intends for His people, this message will speak deeply to your heart.

How does the Divine Service form Christians and church workers? Rev. Sean Daenzer, LCMS Director of Worship and LCMS International Center Chaplain, joins Andy and Sarah for our Set Apart to Serve Series to talk about how the Lord guided him to become a pastor, how his love for church music and worship developed, who has most shaped his understanding and love of worship, how the Divine Service formed him as a Christian and pastor, and the importance of the Divine Service in forming church workers. This program originally aired on May 24, 2024. To learn more about Set Apart to Serve, visit lcms.org/set-apart-to-serve. Have a topic you'd like to hear about on The Coffee Hour? FROM THE VAULT: Gospel Daily with Josh Weidmann Set Apart in Spiritual Warfare, Part 2Series: Younique: Live A Life Set Apart By Christ Scripture: Eph 6:10-23 Episode: 797 Scripture Summary: In Ephesians 6:10–23, Paul closes his letter with a powerful call to spiritual warfare, urging believers to be strong in the Lord and put on the full armor of God to stand against the devil's schemes. He explains that the real battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil. The armor includes the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Paul emphasizes the need to pray in the Spirit at all times, staying alert and interceding for all believers. He also asks for prayer that he may boldly proclaim the gospel. The letter ends with a commendation of Tychicus, who will update them and encourage their hearts, and a closing blessing of peace, love, faith, and grace.

Christians hear the phrase “separation from the world” and picture isolation, legalism, or withdrawing from culture. In this episode, Pastor Jeff and Tiffany explore the true biblical meaning. Separation is not retreat. It is holiness, devotion, and living distinctly for Christ while remaining present in the world He has sent us into. They walk through Scripture from the Old and New Testaments, and offer practical ways believers can stay spiritually grounded in a world saturated with temptation to sin. What We Discussed02:55 In the World but Not of ItTiffany highlights Romans 12:2 and Jesus' prayer in John 17, showing that the call is spiritual distinction, not physical withdrawal.04:12 Misunderstanding SeparationSome believers interpret separation as total isolation, which does not reflect Jesus' example of engaging tax collectors and sinners.05:45 Holiness in the Old TestamentPastor Jeff explains how Israel was called to be set apart in character, worship, and conduct as a reflection of God's holiness.07:44 Unequally Yoked and InfluencePastor Jeff clarifies that separation does not forbid friendships with unbelievers. It warns against partnerships that compromise faith or witness.09:02 Insulation, Not IsolationThey address two errors. Isolation from the world and superiority toward unbelievers, both of which distort true holiness.12:27 The Cost of Being Set ApartSeparation requires evaluating what we consume and participate in, using prayer and Scripture to guard the heart. Unfortunately, rejection and misunderstanding is a reality when choosing biblical truth. 19:37 Scripture and AccountabilityPastor Jeff highlights Psalm 119:11 and the role of Christian community in encouraging holiness and calling out compromise.20:45 Remembering Our True CitizenshipThey reflect on Philippians 3 and the call to live with eternity in view. We are pilgrims passing through this world.“The issue isn't being in the world. It's the world being in us. The boat is meant to be in the water, but the water is not meant to be in the boat.” – Pastor Jeff CranstonWe love your feedback! If you enjoyed this episode, leave us a review.
