Our lives are filled with demands on our time, our attention, and our affections. And because those demands oftentimes compete, we live with constant tension. This Sunday, we’re looking into a part of the Christmas story that helps us find a way out. Join us as we learn together what it has to tell about how to make room for peace.
Luke 2:1-14 "And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
This week, in the second week of Advent, we are focusing on the fact that Jesus came to be peace for all people.

Rev. Patrick Hunnicutt preaches at the 11:00 AM service on Christmas Eve. The Scripture passage is Luke 2:1-14.
What do you want to see under the tree this Christmas? On the night that changed the world, Jesus offered us just one thing. No sermons, no healings, no feeding of the five thousand, no walking on water, no forgiveness, no justice – none of that! That comes later. But on the night Jesus was born we were presented with just one thing. That one thing was the foundation of life for Jesus, and it’s the foundation of life for you and me.

What does the Heavenly Host mean by ‘peace’? It is part of their Adoration and Praise. They certainly do not speak of an outward peace negotiated by men. They declare peace when men have been reconciled to God and enjoy an inward peace in their minds toward God. We obtain peace with God when he begins to be gracious toward us. We obtain peace with God when HE takes the guilt of our sinful state away. We obtain peace when we rely on God’s Fatherly love, and we call upon him with full confidence and faith, and we boldly praise him for the salvation which he promised to us. What is YOUR Adoration and PRAISE today? What is YOUR ADORATION AND PRAISE in this Christmas Season? Are you fully confident and do you truly believe that the salvation offered to ALL humanity is also offered to you? To be a ‘man of good will’ is to be ‘whom he is pleased’. God is pleased with the heart of repentance and of bold declaration that JESUS CHRIST is LORD of ALL and Savior of sinful men. This passage is not about whether or not we ‘accept’ God’s peace. It is instead about the source of God’s peace. God’s Grace is the source of all peace. The message of Adoration and Praise from the Heavenly Host teaches us that ‘good will’ or ‘God’s pleasure’ is the source of peace. This peace is a free gift and flows from the pure mercy of God, the MOST HIGH. And we rightly proclaim to God our Father, to Christ our Savior, that we ADORE YOU LORD!!! Let us learn from this Heavenly Host how to properly ADORE HIM. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men of good will’ … with whom HE is pleased”
