Dr. Smith concludes his series on the seven churches of Revelation, focusing on the church in Laodicea, which Jesus describes as lukewarm and repulsive. He emphasizes that this passage is often misinterpreted to mean that it is better to be lost than to be a lukewarm Christian. The real issue is that the Laodicean church lacks a genuine spiritual life and relies on external blessings as evidence of God's approval. They are self-deceived, thinking they are rich and need nothing, while in reality, they are wretched, poor, blind, and naked. Jesus urges them to seek true spiritual wealth, righteousness, and sight from Him. He encourages them to be zealous, repent, and open the door for Him to enter, promising that those who conquer will share His throne.

Studying the final letter to the church in Laodicea, we learn that we cannot be self sufficient in the Kingdom of God. We must remain dependent on God.

Apathy (sloth) moves too slow and too fast. It welcomes distraction. But the real devastation is that it permits the devil to plunder our riches in Christ.

Pastor Jeff McVay, Seven Words to the Church Today, Returning to The Source, Revelation 3:14-22
The cure for spiritual complacency is a renewed relationship with Jesus.
The church of Laodecia lived in a city that learned to be self-reliant. Their culture was one of compromise and half-hearted commitment to God. The church did more to benefit themselves that to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. An inward focused church is not a church at all but merely an association of individuals that are seeking to meet their own needs. Jesus loved the church of Laodecia and He loves the church of today enough to call us out on our fake deeds of worship. He loves you enough to call you to return to Him. He loves you enough to not let you keep living a lukewarm life! Jesus identifies the dangers of Lukewarm living in this passage. May we all heed His words and see His heart through this letter.
