Pain is not something we seek, but it's often the very thing that shapes us. Life's hardships have a way of stripping away our illusions of control, forcing us to rely on something greater—someone greater. The Bible doesn't tell us to avoid trials but to embrace them with joy, knowing they serve a divine purpose. Our springboard for today's discussion is: James 1:2-3 – "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness."Just like gold is purified by fire, our faith is strengthened through adversity. Every difficulty we endure refines us, burning away impurities of doubt, pride, and self-reliance. Think about the great men and women of faith—Joseph was betrayed and imprisoned, David was hunted, Paul was beaten and imprisoned. Yet, their trials didn't destroy them; they prepared them for greater things.Pain isn't pointless. It builds resilience, deepens our dependence on God, and transforms us into the image of Christ. When we stop asking, Why is this happening to me? and start asking, What is God doing in me through this?—that's when growth happens.Question of the Day: How has a past trial shaped your faith and character?Let's Pray: Lord, help us to see our trials through Your eyes. Refine us, strengthen us, and mold us into the people You've called us to be. Give us steadfast faith to endure and trust in Your perfect plan. Send us a textIn the second half of our Latter-Day Ladies interview, Emily Johns shares her journey through darkness and the power of praying for help in the name of Christ. She teaches the sacredness of grief, the righteousness of leaning into mourning, and the healing that comes from fully processing our pain. We explore 1 Peter 1:7—how faith, more precious than gold, is refined through trials and transforms into true knowledge. This is a conversation about trust, surrender, and finding Christ in our hardest moments.Quotes Referenced:President Russell M. Nelson: "The only way to take sorrow out of death is to take love out of life." ("Doors of Death" April 1992)President Russell M. I promise that as you ponder what you study, the windows of heaven will open, and you will receive answers to your own questions and direction for your own life. I promise that as you daily immerse yourself in the Book of Mormon, you can be immunized against the evils of the day, even the gripping plague of pornography and other mind-numbing addictions” (“The Book of Mormon: What Would Your Life Be Like without It?” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2017,Elder Neal A. February 09, 2025Daily Devotion:"Refined by Fire: The Purpose of Trials" 1 Peter 1:6-7New Living Translation 6 So be truly glad.[a] There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being testedas fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed tothe whole world. In 1 Peter 1:6-7 (NIV), we read: "In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."Peter writes to Christians facing persecution, emphasizing the importance of rejoicing despite trials. Trials serve a divine purpose. They test our faith, proving its genuineness, much like gold is refined by fire. This process strengthens us spiritually and prepares us for eternal glory.Consider James 1:2-4, which encourages us to "consider it pure joy" when facing trials, as they produce perseverance. Trials are not just obstacles; they are opportunities for growth. We must remember that our sufferings are temporary, and our faith is of immense value. Just as gold is refined through fire, our faith is refined through challenges, ultimately bringing us closer to Christ.
From 1 Peter 1:1-12 we learn 3 things.1. The Testing of Our Faith: Our faith is refined and strengthened through trials and suffering, similar to how gold is purified in fire. This testing is temporary but produces permanent results, leading to praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.2. The Outcome of Our Faith: The end result of our faith is the salvation of our souls. This salvation is not just from sin but also from eternal judgment. It involves the redemption of our entire being, body and soul, and will be fully realized at the coming of Christ.3. The Preaching of God's Salvation: Both the Old and New Testaments reveal Christ and His work. The prophets of the Old Testament searched and inquired about the Messiah, and their prophecies pointed to Jesus. Through the preaching of the gospel, we come to faith in Christ and receive the Holy Spirit, who refines our faith through trials.

What can any business or financial leader learn from a twenty-year vet in the fire service?I'm now calling John Cuomo the John Maxwell for firefighters and other public safety officials based on his book, Leadership Refined by Fire.John has always been interested in leadership and lifelong learning, and his book is full of stories, inspiration, and big ideas that can be applied to any playing field. The Meaning Movement: Helping You Find Your Calling, Create Your Life's Work, and Make Career Change
John Cuomo is a former firefighter and now author of the book Leadership Refined by Fire. It's a great book that illustrates leadership principles through the lens of a long tenure as a firefighter. I had a great time digging into some of these ideas, looking at how they apply to the lives of entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, self-funded entrepreneurs, and driven entrepreneurs — people like you and me. I think you're going to enjoy this one. Let's get to it. In this episode, David speaks to John Cuomo who was an active firefighter and paramedic for 24 years. He is also a community advocate and author, who has a real passion for serving people and making them feel as safe as possible. John discovered his true purpose only when things started going wrong in his life. He explains how being a firefighter taught him to be a continuous learner, and that being a leader means serving others. John shares some of the leadership tips he picked up during his time in the firefighting service. He explains how finding a purpose will drive you forward and enable you to have a positive impact. Leading a meaningful life feels incredible. KEY TAKEAWAYS Going through difficult calls is incredibly bonding. Business owners must be constantly alert to new things and learning. It is the only way they can adapt fast enough. If you are leading, you must ensure each team member is trained and as ready as you are. Providing targeted training that helps individuals to progress benefits the team overall. Looking after your team includes paying attention to how everyone is feeling and coping with life or challenges. As a leader, you need support and understanding from your family. Setting small goals to start with and having the discipline to complete them empowers you to do the next thing and gain momentum. Look back on your successes to push you through when you don't feel like doing things. Everyone gets derailed. Constant reflection helps you to spot when you are going off track, so you can make corrections. BEST MOMENTS ‘I feel really blessed” ‘Always be prepared, always learning and making sure you're ready.' ‘If you're a leader in your job, it doesn't matter, you're going to show those leadership skills at home and around your family.' ‘Leadership is a constant goal to try to be better EPISODE RESOURCES Website - https://www.fdleadership.com/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-cuomo-59ab63a0 Leadership Refined by Fire by John M Cuomo - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Leadership-Refined-Fire-Firefighters-Exceptional/dp/1957652004/ ABOUT THE SHOW People with purpose make a difference. Whole, Healthy and Free: Defying the Limitations for Personal Breakthrough
Welcome to Whole, Healthy and Free! In this episode I get personal and share some of the obstacles I've encountered and how they have become, what I consider to be, the greatest gifts of my life. I rarely lead out with these stories and in fact, there are a lot of people I know well who do not know most of what I have been through. The ones that do know, are usually pretty shocked when they find out but it also helps clarify why I do what I do and how I ended up where I am. My entire career has been formed through fire. As a precision wellness specialist, every bit of what I do, how I teach, what I create, what I research, manufacture and formulate comes from personal hardship or direct experience with someone who has experienced hardship in that area. I didn't just research nutrition for health, fitness for strength and recovery, severe health conditions and issues with insufficient health care, I lived it. I didn't just study herbalism, childhood development, education, addictions, emotional and mental health, abuse and trauma, they were also part of my life. The obstacles that were in my way, became the most powerful instructors and I was a VERY determined student. I learned, researched and applied my way around what most people said was impossible. Then I learned and researched my way into figuring out how to fix the broken systems that were contributing to health disparities, declining health, mental and emotional struggles and diet and food. Now, I work to execute the solutions, with much push back from industries that benefit more from it remaining broken. Initially, I was mostly curious. Eventually, and as I learned more, I became furious but it has always been rooted in love. Everything I do is because I believe people deserve the truth. I believe they should have access to all their options and be taught they can do impossible things too. I believe people need to know that someone sees them and will speak up for them and their families when it comes to health and wellness. So this episode is just a few of the things I have experienced, not the whole story to say the least, but enough to make this project make sense. It is vulnerable and scary to share but it is honest. In the coming episodes I will be introducing you to some of my friends and colleagues, who are true geniuses and wonderful people. The hope is to equip you with tools to be more than well but be AMAZING!
