He emphasizes the importance of authenticity, the power of mentorship, the impact of sustainable culture, and how true leadership can counteract corporate apathy and foster engagement. Kyle's philosophy is underscored by real-life examples, including his experience with a once-challenging colleague who became one of his closest allies. Martha and I wanted to revisit the previous episode, on this topic, to further expound on our thoughts that our societies are divided between apathy and empathy. There is something going on, other than the juxtaposition that God blessed or cursed a group of people to be at the top and another to be at the bottom. There is a mental belief, by those groups, that they should occupy and own their status of privilege based on either apathy and empathy.

For the past five years I've been teaching a class at various rationality camps, workshops, conferences, etc. I've done it maybe 50 times in total, and I think I've only encountered a handful out of a few hundred teenagers and adults who really had a deep sense of what it means for emotions to “make sense.” Even people who have seen Inside Out, and internalized its message about the value of Sadness as an emotion, still think things like “I wish I never felt Jealousy,” or would have trouble answering “What's the point of Boredom?” The point of the class was to give them not a simple answer for each emotion, but to internalize the model by which emotions, as a whole, are understood to be evolutionarily beneficial adaptations; adaptations that may not in fact all be well suited to the modern, developed world, but which can still help [...] ---Outline:(01:00) Inside Out(05:46) Pick an Emotion, Any Emotion(07:05) Anxiety(08:27) Jealousy/Envy(11:13) Boredom/Frustration/Laziness(15:31) Confusion(17:35) Apathy and Ennui (aan-wee)(21:23) Hatred/Panic/Depression(28:33) What this Means for You(29:20) Emotions as Chemicals(30:51) Emotions as Motivators(34:13) Final Thoughts--- First published: August 3rd, 2025 Source: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/PkRXkhsEHwcGqRJ9Z/emotions-make-sense --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO. ---Images from the article:Apple Podcasts and Spotify do not show images in the episode description. In this series, Jan selects a word to focus on for each month, encouraging growth in a specific area, challenging herself and her audience. This year Jan will be focusing on the difficult words we tend to tie to ourselves, offering insight and tools to manage or overcome these obstacles. This month, the focus is on Apathy. Jan shares her deeply personal experience caring for her mother with Alzheimer's, highlighting the emotional extremes of rage and apathy she faces. She discusses how apathy, a lack of interest or emotion, can stem from overwhelming stress and neurological conditions, and emphasizes the danger of living in this numb state. Jan offers practical advice, such as seeking help, changing routines, and finding moments of respite in nature, to combat apathy and burnout. Her message is one of compassion and resilience, urging listeners to adopt a problem-solving mindset even in the darkest moments. If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or suicidal ideation, please access the resources below:National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Call/Text 988National Sexual Assault Hotline (RAINN) : 1-800-656-HOPE (4673)National Alliance for Mental Illness: 1-800-950-6264Subscribe / Support / Contact:

This episode/discussion came about from a discussion Martha and I were having about a race of people have consistently conquered and destroyed everything and every place they have encountered. We eventually labeled that group as apathetic. We then applied the same thought to people with other DNA and traits that seem to make them habitually empathetic. As we continued to consider the thought, we began to hypothesize that those individuals who lean towards the DNA and traits of apathy, they are happy to hurt others and to even wish for the privilege of exercising hatred. The other group, with certain DNA traits, seem to expect the most hateful people to become a Saul to Paul experience. Let's listen to Martha and how she explains this thought.
David's story reveals how even those 'after God's own heart' can fall into devastating failure through apathy and arrogance. Apathy leads us to misread circumstances, abdicate responsibilities, and ignore evidence of our weaknesses. Arrogance convinces us our desires matter more than others' pain or God's will. When we fail, we typically cover up, escalate, and justify our actions—just as David did with Bathsheba and Uriah. True repentance, as modeled in Psalm 51, involves honest confession, asking for forgiveness, and seeking God's strength to change. By examining our lives for these dangerous attitudes, we can prevent similar failures or find healing when we fall.
“What's funny is, people are talking about these movies being woke, but it's literally just what superheroes are supposed to be about — kindness, empathy, and protecting people that can't be protected. ” “These are times where we are told that you can't afford to look out for more than yourself — And to stand amidst that — to care about somebody even if it doesn't have some immediate benefit to me? Yeah, that's punk rock.” In a world spinning faster than a speeding bullet — where doomscrolls rain like cosmic rays, truth is stretched, accountability is turning invisible, everything is on fire, and our foundation is becoming rocky — maybe what we need isn't just another (super)hero — but a reminder of what everyday, real heroism looks like. This week we're talking about SUPERMAN + THE FANTASTIC FOUR - not one, but two summer movies appropriate for the time we're living in. At first glance, it might feel like another studio cash grab — but these movies arrived right on time, reminding us of the power of hope, kindness, and the audacity to care in a world that tells us not to. “It's clobberin' time!” is more than just a tagline; it's a call to stand together and fight the good fight, together. So we gathered a couple of our favorite superhero sons of Cincinnati — Stefan K. James and Karl Preissner — longtime friends, early podcast guests (#11 + #12). Karl Preissner a longtime friend, allyship expert, and person who dances like no one is watching. And Stefan James is arguably my favorite Jamaican- Chinese- midwestern- Floridian father and business dude to nerd out on all things fiction and non-fiction. Both are gents who i don't spend enough time talking to. They both joined to talk through their thoughts, feelings, and anxieties of the moment we're in, and reflect on how these films can show us a better way forward. After all punk rock, and rebellions, are built on hope. Over the last few years, I've watched one of my granddaughters develop into a competitive distance runner – her races are often very exciting! Just as interesting to me, though, is how she ‘follows' one of her coaches. This young woman, a gifted runner herself, is careful to guide my granddaughter in developing effective strategies for running long distances, as well as teaching her specific approaches to exercise, managing injuries, and breathing during extreme exertion. It is incredible to consider the significant impact this coach has on both the running experience and the personal lives of my granddaughter, as well as the other kids on the team. In a very real way, my granddaughter is becoming a ‘disciple' of this young coach. Fortunately for my family, this coach is a fine, Christian woman who leads in her church and lives a committed Christian life. Interestingly, this is much how one's Christian faith is worked out as we decide to become' disciples' of Jesus. As we place our faith in Him and submit to His leadership and teachings, He influences almost every aspect of our lives. In one passage, a crowd had gathered around Jesus to hear him teach; some were interested in becoming ‘disciples' of Jesus. A question was asked of him, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus' answer was insightful and clear: “You shall love the Lord Your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.‘ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:36-40 Jesus had taught them what it was to live as his ‘disciple!' Jesus' words were based on quotations of two Old Testament passages, which were the ‘bedrock' teachings of the Jewish faith. These teachings were life teachings that would lead one in the ways of God and could guide us in this life, preparing us for the life to come. “Love God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest commandment, as it is foundational for all the Jewish and Christian faith teachings. Loving God was more than emotional; it involved one's feelings and passions, to be sure, but it also would lead one to commit oneself to learning the ways of God, and living in a way that would please God, and invite him into one's life. When mature, this love for God would be absolute and steadfast, adding a profound sense of strength and stability to one's life. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Here, Jesus made it clear that living as his disciple involved more than just religious belief; he also expected our faith to impact how we interact with others profoundly. To love another as oneself meant to be sincerely concerned for the well-being of others; too, it means that you would treat others as you would like to be treated – an idea that came to be called “the golden rule.” Apathy towards the sufferings of others, and hatred and rejection of those of different social or ethnic groups, simply had no place in the life of a disciple of Jesus! When applied to our lives and relationships, these teachings will lead us to a life that is quite different from what is commonly seen on this earth. This is exactly as Jesus intended, as it will lead others to know the value of living as a disciple of Jesus and may even draw them into the faith. May we all follow Jesus and live as his disciples! In physics, inertia is the tendency of objects to resist change. A body at rest stays at rest unless acted upon by force. Culture works the same way. Societies prefer to stay as they are. They resist change unless energy is applied over time. This resistance is not dramatic. It is quiet, persistent, and hard to overcome. It is cultural inertia.Modern anti-racist America often frames its struggle as a battle against visible hate. Extremists exist, but they are few. The larger obstacle is the mass of people who do not move. They are not driven by hate. They are driven by comfort with the familiar. They avoid conflict. They do not fight progress, but they do not push for it either. This stillness is the real challenge.Inertia in physics means an object does not change motion without a push. In culture, it means habits and systems stay the same without a steady force. Laws may change, but behavior lags. Old patterns return when effort fades. This is why cultural progress feels slow. Victories erode because the weight of culture resists movement. Most Americans live in this state. They are not activists or extremists. They work, care for families, and avoid friction. They accept small changes they cannot fight but resist when they feel forced. They dislike being shamed. They dislike disruption. They stay still unless change is presented as something they can live with. This is not malice. It is human nature. If most of society resists this way, movements face a problem. They can defeat loud opponents, but they still must move the quiet majority. This requires more than outrage. It requires energy that does not burn out. It requires stories and policies that make change feel less like a threat and more like a natural step.History shows how inertia stalls progress. The Civil Rights Movement won legal victories, but social attitudes shifted slowly. Schools resegregated, not because of hate, but because of neglect and resistance. Occupy Wall Street rose, then faded. Black Lives Matter surged during crisis, then lost momentum. Without constant force, society slips back to stillness.Inertia explains backlash. People do not like to be forced to move. They push back when they feel cornered. This is not always ideology. It is fear of disruption. Activists sometimes mistake this for hostility, but it is not. It is inertia. People cling to what feels normal.Apathy is another form. Many agree with ideals but do nothing to live them. They nod at slogans, then return to old habits. They wait for storms to pass. This non-action holds things in place.Modern activism often targets symbols—statues, names, language. These changes matter but do not always move culture. They can harden inertia by making people defensive. Real change needs more than symbols. It needs habits that remain when slogans fade. It needs steady energy, not just bursts of outrage. The rollback of affirmative action, the weakening of voting rights, and the slow return of segregation are not the work of loud hate. They happened because energy faded. Systems drifted. Old patterns returned because it was easier to let them than to fight them. The new anti-racist America must accept that its biggest opponent is not loud hate but stillness. This force is natural. It is human. To overcome it, movements must apply steady, patient energy. They must make change feel like evolution, not attack. They must turn ideals into habits that last when attention fades.Cultural inertia does not shout, but it holds everything in place. Progress depends on learning to move it. Real change requires more than defeating those who oppose it. It requires moving those who stand still. This is harder than fighting hate. It is the long, quiet work of applying enough energy, for long enough, to shift the weight of a culture that prefers to stay as it is.
In this episode, I explore my personal moral journey, highlighting the stark contrasts between societal values and actual behaviors, particularly regarding the treatment of children. I share my experiences of neglect and abuse during my childhood, reflecting on how the silence from those aware of my suffering illustrates a troubling apathy towards vulnerable individuals. I analyze the contradictions faced in academic and professional settings, where the pursuit of truth often falters in the face of uncomfortable realities. Furthermore, I critique the atheist community's abandonment of moral integrity when it came to my own struggles, questioning the authenticity of their values. This discussion invites listeners to reflect on the alignment between their proclaimed values and their actions, urging a courageous confrontation with uncomfortable truths in pursuit of justice and integrity.FOLLOW ME ON X! https://x.com/StefanMolyneuxGET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025

College enrollment numbers are down, motivation is plummeting, and a growing number of boys seem to be disengaging from real life. What's going on?A Look at the NumbersCollege statistics reflect the shift. In 2023, men made up only 42% of students aged 18–24 in four-year colleges, down from 47% in 2011. Women were 9 percentage points more likely to be enrolled in college than men in 2022. And when boys do go to college, they are less likely than girls to graduate.Brain Development and Early EducationBrain development plays a role, too. Girls' brains mature faster than boys', especially in areas related to sensory integration and self-regulation. This biological reality clashes with today's academic environment, where even kindergarten demands early reading and writing skills—before many boys are ready.5 Key Factors Behind the CrisisAccording to Dr. Sax, several powerful cultural shifts over the last 40 years are affecting boys in ways that parents and educators can no longer ignore. Dr. Sax identifies five key factors that are contributing to this downward spiral:1. Early Education Isn't Built for BoysKindergarten used to be a place for creativity and play. Now, it focuses on reading, writing, and sitting still for long periods—an environment where many boys struggle. Instead of adapting the system, society too often labels boys with ADHD. The CDC reports that over 11% of children aged 5–17 have been diagnosed with ADHD, often as a result of mismatched expectations rather than true disorder.2. Video Games Offer an Addictive EscapeMany boys say school is boring and can't wait to get home to their video games. These games offer fast-paced stimulation and constant action—but research shows they also increase risky behavior, diminish empathy, and disconnect boys from real-life goals.3. Overuse of ADHD MedicationsStimulant medications like Adderall and Ritalin can alter motivation and personality by impacting brain receptors. Dr. Sax recommends non-stimulant alternatives like Strattera or Wellbutrin, warning that reliance on the wrong medications may do more harm than good.4. Chemical Hormone DisruptionModern plastics and water contaminants act as endocrine disruptors, mimicking estrogen in the body. This not only affects puberty and hormone development in boys but may also contribute to rising ADHD rates and declining motivation.5. Lack of Strong Role ModelsFrom sitcoms to social media, positive portrayals of fatherhood and masculinity have disappeared. Instead...

In this fiery and heartfelt episode of the FWACATA podcast, Juan dives into something that's been gnawing at his soul: the soul-crushing apathy many folks are clinging to in the face of horror. From Gaza to ICE raids, from flood zone tragedies to TikTok indifference, we're living in a world where not choosing is becoming its own kind of evil.Juan shares a raw convo with an old friend—actor, comedian, fellow chaos juggler—about the plague of “I'm not political” energy infecting people who should know better. Whether it's fear of being wrong or just the comfort of not being inconvenienced, that middle-of-the-road numbness is exactly what the worst people in power are counting on.This isn't about left or right. This is about right and wrong. About being human. About choosing to care, even when it hurts. And about not waiting until the heat's too high to realize you're the frog in the pot.Yeah, there's some yelling. Yeah, there's swearing. Yeah, there's a solid reminder that artists and actors can be full of it, too. But underneath it all, this episode is a love letter to everyone who does give a damn—and a challenge to those who don't.

When facing the realities of our world, the urge to drown in grief or shut down into apathy is becoming more and more common. As we are flooded with information and global predicaments outside of our control, overwhelm can set in, affecting our energy, efficacy, and even our ability to care. But what if facing our grief is actually the pathway to increasing our capacity to stay connected to and work on the things that matter most to us? What tools, practices, or rituals could we use to help us begin to metabolize our grief? In this episode, Nate is joined by John Seed and Skye Cielita Flor to explore the power of rituals and community for processing grief and transforming it into a deeper connection with ourselves, each other, and the natural world. They discuss the primary influences of their work, including ‘The Work That Reconnects,' a framework developed by Joanna Macy and others, as well as the philosophy of Deep Ecology, founded by Arne Naess. Most importantly, John and Skye share their experience with deepening their own emotional capacity and embodiment of ecological values, and how they've helped others do the same. How has an absence of ritual and the avoidance of grief in our culture distorted our relationship to loss – and therefore our ability to protect what we love? What practices do other cultures use to nurture ecological identity and kinship with the more-than-human world? And finally, why might grief, when honored and integrated, be a vital part of building more resilient and ecologically-grounded systems for the future? (Conversation recorded on May 21st, 2025) About John Seed: John Seed is an activist, facilitator, musician, and co-author of the seminal book “Thinking Like a Mountain” with Arne Naess, Joanna Macy and Pat Fleming. John Seed is the founder of the Rainforest Information Centre and has dedicated his life to the protection of rainforests and their biodiversity since 1979. Over the past few decades, John has also become a pivotal figure in the Deep Ecology movement. About Skye Cielita Flor: Skye's early years were spent working in wildlife rehabilitation and as a Wilderness Guide in the South African bush. She then underwent a traditional 3 year apprenticeship in Taoist Healing practices before moving to the Peruvian Amazon where she entered into a full-time 5 year traditional curanderismo apprenticeship with her Shipibo teachers of the Mahua - Lopez lineage. On return from the jungle, she has been passionate about finding meaningful ways to deepen into and integrate the life altering paradigmatic shifts she experienced with the plants. You might be breathing... but are you actually living? Some days, it's easier to scroll past, stay numb, and check out. That quiet voice saying, “Why bother?” That's apathy. And it's one of the enemy's most effective weapons. Left unchecked, it will dull your heart, steal your purpose, and leave you to rot. But Jesus offers something radically different. He promises a life that's fully alive—a life filled with purpose, passion, and presence. Hannah Driskill walks us through how we can wake up, escape the walking dead, and live a life that is worth living. Recorded live at Crossroads Church in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Happy Pride Month Fiends! This week we are going to rebroadcast some of our previous pride month episodes before releasing a brand new episode. If you are all caught up with WWBD, please take the time to relisten to this tragic episode on kitty Genovese and historical significance of her case. ----------------- On March 27th 1964, the headline: "37 Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police; Apathy at Stabbing of Queens Woman Shocks Inspector" was splashed across the cover of the New York times. The story behind it was the horrific rape and murder of a young woman named Kitty Genovese. But the story doesn't focus on Kitty, or even her murderer, it focuses on her neighbors, who allegedly saw the murder in real time and did nothing. This story stirred an enormous reaction to a phenomenon that was dubbed Urban Apathy. This case also inspired all the research that lead to a psychosocial theory called "the Bystander Effect". There's just one problem, the New York Times lied. Most of you will know this case, but there is so much about it that has been hidden from the public for so long that we felt it deserves re-examining. Kitty, her devoted family and long time girlfriend Mary Ann lived their lives for a great many years believing that Kitty was the girl no one cared about, but she wasn't. She isn't. We decided to take a fresh look at this classic morality tale and find the truth behind the lessons. Tom welcomes back John Lee for a discussion on the concerning trends of global control and manipulation by powerful entities across finance, media, and technology. Lee highlights tactics like facial recognition and digital wallets that threaten privacy and autonomy. He warns of a potential biometric system that could blacklist individuals, emphasizing the need for proactive measures. To protect oneself, Lee suggests diversifying assets, particularly investing in gold and silver as reliable stores of value, and establishing alternative living arrangements globally to avoid dependency on any single system. He also stresses the importance of gaining new experiences over mere wealth accumulation, advocating for personal growth and memorable experiences as true sources of wealth. Lee remains optimistic that collective consciousness will drive a breakthrough, leading to positive change after sufficient negative experiences.
