Moving from Apathy to Action: How Facing Grief Can Help Us Navigate a World in Crisis | Reality Roundtable #17

The Great Simplification with Nate Hagens

When facing the realities of our world, the urge to drown in grief or shut down into apathy is becoming more and more common. As we are flooded with information and global predicaments outside of our control, overwhelm can set in, affecting our energy, efficacy, and even our ability to care. But what if facing our grief is actually the pathway to increasing our capacity to stay connected to and work on the things that matter most to us? What tools, practices, or rituals could we use to help us begin to metabolize our grief? In this episode, Nate is joined by John Seed and Skye Cielita Flor to explore the power of rituals and community for processing grief and transforming it into a deeper connection with ourselves, each other, and the natural world. They discuss the primary influences of their work, including ‘The Work That Reconnects,' a framework developed by Joanna Macy and others, as well as the philosophy of Deep Ecology, founded by Arne Naess. Most importantly, John and Skye share their experience with deepening their own emotional capacity and embodiment of ecological values, and how they've helped others do the same.  How has an absence of ritual and the avoidance of grief in our culture distorted our relationship to loss – and therefore our ability to protect what we love? What practices do other cultures use to nurture ecological identity and kinship with the more-than-human world? And finally, why might grief, when honored and integrated, be a vital part of building more resilient and ecologically-grounded systems for the future? (Conversation recorded on May 21st, 2025)   About John Seed: John Seed is an activist, facilitator, musician, and co-author of the seminal book “Thinking Like a Mountain” with Arne Naess, Joanna Macy and Pat Fleming. John Seed is the founder of the Rainforest Information Centre and has dedicated his life to the protection of rainforests and their biodiversity since 1979. Over the past few decades, John has also become a pivotal figure in the Deep Ecology movement.   About Skye Cielita Flor: Skye's early years were spent working in wildlife rehabilitation and as a Wilderness Guide in the South African bush. She then underwent a traditional 3 year apprenticeship in Taoist Healing practices before moving to the Peruvian Amazon where she entered into a full-time 5 year traditional curanderismo apprenticeship with her Shipibo teachers of the Mahua - Lopez lineage.  On return from the jungle, she has been passionate about finding meaningful ways to deepen into and integrate the life altering paradigmatic shifts she experienced with the plants. This is primarily done through her work as a facilitator of Experiential Deep Ecology, as a Grief Ritualist, as a co-facilitator of The Mythic Body year-long course by Josh Schrei, and as a facilitator of immersive group experiences into practices focusing on reclamation of living earth perception, mythic imagination, and ritual rhythms.   Show Notes and More Watch this video episode on YouTube   Want to learn the broad overview of The Great Simplification in 30 minutes? In Difficult Times, Choose Letting Go Over Giving Up

Together, we will explore the critical distinction between "letting go" and "giving up" through a Buddhist philosophical lens. Margaret discusses how letting go is a conscious, compassionate practice of releasing attachment without losing hope or effort, while giving up represents a collapse into despair, apathy, and complete surrender. Using personal anecdotes and insights from Buddhist teachings, she encourages listeners to navigate challenging times with wisdom, equanimity, and continued engagement. Key Points

Bible School 2025: The Pursuit of God Introduction The goal for the week is to dive deep into spiritual topics as adults while the children receive special instruction. The church has been praying for the Holy Spirit to saturate and fill every room, heart, and teacher throughout the week. "It takes the Holy Spirit to do anything that is spiritually important." The focus will be on the pursuit of God, revisiting a topic from the previous year with expanded lessons. Notes will be available for those who want them. Pastor Tommy emphasizes the importance of God's people "getting into that normal, expectant, pushing toward apprehending God every day." The devil uses many "thieves" to steal the relationship with God. Pastor Tommy credits A.W. Tozer's book, The Pursuit of God, as a significant influence. Tozer was a pastor who gave away all royalties from his books and lived a simple life dedicated to serving God. "Here was a man that gave everything he had to serve God...he gave it away and he wrote never owned a car him and his wife would road a bus everywhere they went." Revelation 2 and 3: Churches of Ephesus and Laodicea The Revelator, through the Holy Spirit, provides a chronological picture of the church age, from the New Testament church to the church of Laodicea. Ephesus (Revelation 2:1-7): A powerful, growing church filled with the transforming power of God. Known for its works, labor, patience, and intolerance of evil. Criticized for having "left thy first love." The church is urged to repent and return to their initial devotion. Laodicea (Revelation 3:14-22): Represents the modern church, characterized by talk of religion but lacking substance. Materially rich but spiritually "wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked." Lukewarm, neither cold nor hot, leading to the threat of being "spewed...out of my mouth." The church is warned to repent and return to God. Pastor Tommy suggests that elements of both churches may be present in contemporary congregations. Some may have lost their first love, worn down by the world. Others may be living in sin and indifferent toward God. Both conditions require change and repentance. The Pursuit of God: An Urge Within Us The pursuit of God is spurred by an urge that God places within us. The Holy Spirit wants to help individuals move from where they are to where they need to be. John 6:44 states, "No man can come unto Me except the Father draw him." It was the Holy Spirit that led individuals to conviction and opened their hearts to faith. Pastor Tommy emphasizes that salvation is not the end but the beginning of a journey. "When a person is born again, that is but the inception." The Holy Spirit's work is essential to prevent individuals from taking credit for their spiritual achievements. "If it wasn't for the Holy Spirit of God I wouldn't be saved." The impulse to pursue God originates with God, and the outworking is our following hard after Him. Even in pursuit, individuals are already in God's hand. Apathy and indifference toward God are prevalent among Christians. People come to church and leave unchanged, without engaging in personal prayer or Bible study. Examples of Pursuing God David (Psalm 63:1, 8; 42:1-2): Sought God early and thirsted for Him. His soul followed hard after God. "O God, Thou art my God; early will I seek Thee; my soul thirsteth for Thee." A man after God's own heart, always wanting more of Him. Moses: Spoke with God face to face but desired to see His glory. God honored his request by allowing him to see a glimpse of His glory from the cleft of the rock. Moses' face shone brightly after the encounter. "Moses got to see it because he asked him for more." Apostle Paul (Philippians 3:12-14, 8-10): Acknowledged that he had not yet attained perfection but ...

Happy Pride Month Fiends! This week we are going to rebroadcast some of our previous pride month episodes before releasing a brand new episode. If you are all caught up with WWBD, please take the time to relisten to this tragic episode on kitty Genovese and historical significance of her case.  ----------------- On March 27th 1964, the headline: "37 Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police; Apathy at Stabbing of Queens Woman Shocks Inspector" was splashed across the cover of the New York times. The story behind it was the horrific rape and murder of a young woman named Kitty Genovese. But the story doesn't focus on Kitty, or even her murderer, it focuses on her neighbors, who allegedly saw the murder in real time and did nothing. This story stirred an enormous reaction to a phenomenon that was dubbed Urban Apathy. This case also inspired all the research that lead to a psychosocial theory called "the Bystander Effect". There's just one problem, the New York Times lied.  Most of you will know this case, but there is so much about it that has been hidden from the public for so long that we felt it deserves re-examining. Kitty, her devoted family and long time girlfriend Mary Ann lived their lives for a great many years believing that Kitty was the girl no one cared about, but she wasn't. She isn't. We decided to take a fresh look at this classic morality tale and find the truth behind the lessons.   Click to learn more Original New York Times Article LA Times article on Sophia Ferrar Winston Moseley's NYT Editorial *The Witness - Documentary on Amazon Prime *Affiliate Link WWBD Merch Buy your WWBD swag here!  Join the Conversation

Make me prudent in planning,Courageous in taking risks.Make me patient in suffering, unassuming in prosperity. Keep me, Lord, attentive at prayer,Temperate in food and drink,Diligent in my work,Firm in my good intentions. Let my conscience be clear,My conduct without fault,My speech blameless,My life well-ordered.Put me on guard against my human weaknesses.Let me cherish your love for me,Keep your law,And come at last to your salvation. Teach me to realize that this world is passing,That my true future is the happiness of heaven,That life on earth is short,And the life to come eternal. Help me to prepare for deathWith a proper fear of judgment,But a greater trust in your goodness.Lead me safely through deathTo the endless joy of heaven. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Part 1 Power vs. Force by David R. Hawkins SummarySummary of "Power vs. Force" by David R. Hawkins "Power vs. Force" is a philosophical and spiritual book written by Dr. David R. Hawkins, which explores the distinctions between power, which he associates with higher moral and ethical values, and force, which corresponds to lower, more destructive tendencies. The central theme of the book is the concept of human consciousness and how it can be calibrated on a scale of levels of truth. Key Concepts:Levels of Consciousness: Hawkins introduces a scale from 1 to 1000, where different emotional states correspond to different levels of consciousness. Shame (20), Guilt (30), Apathy (50), Fear (100), Desire (125), Anger (150), Pride (175) are lower levels. Higher levels include Courage (200), Neutrality (250), Willingness (310), Acceptance (350), Reason (400), Love (500), Joy (540), Peace (600), and Enlightenment (700+).Force vs. Power: Force is associated with manipulation, coercion, and effort. It often comes from lower levels of consciousness and is dependent on external conditions. Power, in contrast, is innate, comes from higher consciousness, and is aligned with love, truth, and integrity. It tends to be self-sustaining and uplifting.Kinesiology and Muscle Testing: Hawkins proposes that muscle testing can be a means of determining the truth-value of statements based on their alignment with higher or lower consciousness. By applying this technique, one can discern forces or influences in life that enhance or diminish wellbeing.Truth and Reality: Hawkins posits that there is an absolute truth that can be aligned with higher consciousness and that individuals can attune themselves to this truth through self-awareness and spiritual practice. This truth elevates personal and collective consciousness which contributes to societal progress.Spiritual Development: The journey towards higher consciousness is framed as a greater alignment with power rather than force. The book encourages readers to strive for higher emotional states, which cultivate well-being, compassion, and unity. Applications:Personal Growth: By understanding where one resides on the consciousness scale, individuals can actively work to raise their level and embrace more empowering outlooks.Social and Organizational Dynamics: Hawkins' insights can be applied to improve relationships, leadership qualities, and communal interactions by promoting power-oriented values over force-driven actions. Conclusion:"Power vs. Force" invites readers to reflect on their own level of consciousness, the nature of their actions, and the impact they have on themselves and others. Through the lenses of philosophy, psychology, and spirituality, Hawkins presents a compelling argument for choosing "power" as a path toward personal and collective transformation.Part 2 Power vs. Force AuthorDavid R. Hawkins David R. Hawkins (1913-2012) was an American psychiatrist, spiritual teacher, and author. He gained recognition for his work in the fields of consciousness research and spirituality, particularly through his concepts of consciousness levels and the interplay between power and force.Power vs. Force Published: The book "Power vs. Force" was first released in 1995. Content: In this book, Hawkins introduces the concept of a scale of human consciousness and differentiates between power (which is based on true strength, integrity, and benevolence) and force (which is associated with manipulation, coercion, and ego-driven actions). He also discusses the calibration of different levels of consciousness using a numerical scale, which has become one of his hallmarks.Other Notable Books by David R. He warns of a potential biometric system that could blacklist individuals, emphasizing the need for proactive measures. To protect oneself, Lee suggests diversifying assets, particularly investing in gold and silver as reliable stores of value, and establishing alternative living arrangements globally to avoid dependency on any single system. He also stresses the importance of gaining new experiences over mere wealth accumulation, advocating for personal growth and memorable experiences as true sources of wealth. In an era marked by organizational strain and evolving workplace expectations, leadership must move beyond traditional fixes and embrace systemic transformation.  Patrick Farran, PhD, MBA, co-founder of Ad Lucem Group, joins host Julia Patrick to dissect the true nature of burnout, succession, and sustainable engagement in nonprofit leadership.Patrick challenges the prevailing assumption that burnout stems solely from overwork. “The number one cause of burnout is not overwork—it's the loss of agency,” he explains, arguing that without autonomy, even meaningful work becomes draining. Rather than defaulting to micromanagement during times of stress, Patrick advocates for building cultures rooted in trust, purpose alignment, and shared responsibility.Drawing from decades of executive coaching and organizational consulting, Patrick offers a framework built on three pillars: personal legacy, building others, and systems thinking. His advice is clear—leaders must be deliberate about cultivating capability in others and embedding processes that outlast any individual. This approach not only fortifies the organization but reduces the high failure rate of executive transitions. He also introduces the concept of “job crafting,” citing research on hospital janitors who redefined their roles around meaning rather than task lists. This practice, when applied in nonprofit settings, can create clear pipelines for succession and foster resilience.Another key theme is the embrace of constructive conflict. Patrick quotes Adam Grant: “The absence of conflict is not harmony—it's apathy.” Healthy disagreement, he argues, is not a threat but a catalyst for innovation. Nonprofits should harness this energy to align purpose, improve communication, and prepare for inevitable turbulence. Finally, Patrick outlines how appreciative inquiry—a strength-based framework—can transform leadership conversations and shift organizations away from crisis reactivity. By examining moments of excellence, teams can uncover hidden systems of success and replicate them in difficult times. From strategic succession planning to reframing burnout and conflict, this episode is packed with research-backed guidance, timely analogies, and field-tested leadership philosophy. It's a must-watch for nonprofit leaders dealing with today's pressures.00:00:00 Welcome and Introduction to Patrick Farran 00:02:40 What Does Ad Lucem Group Do 00:05:20 Misconceptions About Burnout in Nonprofits 00:10:15 The Role of Agency and Trust in Staff Retention 00:15:40 How Leaders Unintentionally Cause Disengagement 00:21:10 Tools for Succession and Internal Growth 00:26:05 Job Crafting as a Path to Leadership 00:31:40 Constructive Conflict vs Apathy 00:36:50 Appreciative Inquiry and Strength-Based Leadership 00:41:10 Preparing for Turbulent Times Without Panic 00:45:20 About the New Book: The Intentional Executive #NonprofitLeadership #BurnoutRecovery #ExecutiveSuccessionFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

Study 16 - Luke 11:14 – 12:12 Controversies As they moved towards Jerusalem antagonism to all that Jesus represented grew. There is no clear pattern in this passage. Problem piled on problem; attack followed attack. Question 1: According to the experts those of us who live in the Western world live in a Christianised, but now post-Christian society and therefore in a situation much less clearly defined than it was in New Testament days. Then they knew who the enemy was. We can be much less sure. Apathy, rather than antagonism is our main enemy. Do you agree? If so, give examples of where this can be seen. Our world is clearly Christianized by its historical background. But there is a steady movement to a more secularized society in most of the Western world, showing in slightly different ways in different countries. In the UK this shows in strong arguments in the media that ‘religion’ is to have no role at all in politics or civic life. The adviser to one former Prime Minister announced that ‘we do not do God’. What is called ‘multiculturalism’ is appealed to to prevent any idea that Christianity has a special role in society in spite of it having been dominant for more than 1000 years. It is important for you, as it is for us, to think through how the culture of the society in which we live interacts with our Christian faith. Read Luke 11: 14 – 28. Jesus clearly divides the world he lived in into two warring parts: the Kingdom of Satan and the Kingdom of God (11: 18, 20). (By using a word about war I do not mean that there is any place for physically aggressive fighting in our faith. Defence may be another matter.) Question 2: Can we divide our world the same way? What are the implications of doing so? We need to be very careful here. It is all too easy to think where we are is the Kingdom of God and what opposes us is the kingdom of Satan. It may be but it may be just our arrogantly self-centred view of the world. Yet Satan is an all too real force in the world; indeed it is easy to argue that he has been more active than usual in the last 100 years in all the wars, massacres and famines that have plagued the human race.. We ignore him at our peril. Question 3: When Jesus talks in terms of warfare (Luke 11: 21 – 23) he distinguishes between those who are with him and those who are against him. Where is the front line today between those he describes as ‘with me’ and those ‘against me’? The answer to this one will vary according to where you live. As a general statement perhaps it is best to say that those, and only those, who are prepared to say “Jesus is Lord” are those who are with us. Question 4: Luke 11:24–26 suggests that turning over a new leaf is counter- productive. Can you illustrate this from your own experience by citing the case of someone who tried to turn over a new leaf without a spiritual dimension to it and slipped back into their old ways, or worse? Question 5: In what way does 11: 28 take 10: 39 forward another stage? Mary was commended for listening. This verse says we must not only hear the word of God – we must do it. And, remember, Jesus means by ‘doing’ action in the world, in loving other people and acting in their support, not just sitting in church and attending worship or praying regularly. There are plenty of other religions in the world which are all about doing the right religious things; none others which are so focussed on our behaviour towards other people. We read Luke 11:29–36. The emphasis in Luke 11:16 and Luke 11:29–32 is on the absence of any sign except the presence of Jesus. But at least they looked for a sign. If our generation does not do so, the likely judgement on them (or should that be ‘us’) sounds as though it will be grim. We read Luke 11:37–54. If you belong to an ordinary small Protestant church, as we do, our religiosity may appear to an outsider very vague and unfocussed compared with that of most overtly religious people (high Church of England, RC, Muslim, Mormons, Hindu etc.). We have no liturgy, no splendid ceremonies and ceremonial wear, no prescribed level of contribution, no required standards of behaviour. So we escape the accusations of Jesus in 11: 39 – 52. Yet we are not blameless! Question 6: For each of the 7 Woes (counting 39 – 41 as the first) think of how they might be reworded to attack our weaknesses (mostly the exact opposite of theirs). Would the Lord say ‘woe’ to us? I don’t need to tell you what I think the answer to that question would be! Finally we read Luke 12: 1 – 12. These verses are about is about a demand for a total commitment that is quite frightening. We can (do?) often slide sideways from these statements in a smoke screen of words. Question 7: Which statement in these verses, Luke 12: 1 – 12, do you find most difficult? do you most encouraging? Of course the answer to that one is up to you. For me the most difficult is the idea that those who do not follow Jesus will be thrown into hell; and the most encouraging is the fact that God knows all about all the sparrows that squabble in our back garden thinking they are singing when they are making the most awful noise. There is great hope for you and me in that statement. Tap or click here to save/download this as a MP3 audio file

Adam Hamilton, a seasoned expert in gold stocks with over two decades of experience, emphasizes the importance of strategically selecting investments within the gold mining sector. He advocates for focusing on mid-tier miners, which he believes offer superior growth potential compared to major miners. These mid-tier companies, operating at 300,000 to 1,000,000 ounces annually, are more agile and capable of expanding their operations effectively. Hamilton highlights their lower costs and better ability to generate cash flows, making them a more attractive investment option. In contrast, major miners often struggle with high costs and face challenges such as overpaying for mergers and acquisitions (M&A), leading to diluted earnings. Their large market capitalizations make it difficult for them to grow production sustainably, unlike mid-tier miners which can achieve significant growth through new projects. Hamilton also discusses the cyclical nature of exploration spending within the industry. Recent years have seen reduced exploration activity due to unfavorable market conditions, potentially leading to a future supply deficit. He underscores the importance of diversification in investment strategies, advising against overcommitting to any single asset. Instead, he recommends spreading investments across various sectors to mitigate risk. During periods like the summer doldrums, Hamilton suggests that investors use this time for thorough research and homework to identify undervalued opportunities. He encourages a patient approach, noting that buying windows may be brief once favorable conditions arise. After growing up in a small-town banking family in rural North Dakota, Adam left for school at the University of Colorado at Boulder. While watching the markets and trading, he studied finance, accounting, and entrepreneurship. Adam went on to be a Big Six CPA and consultant after graduation, never stopping learning. By early 2000, Adam finally had enough experience and capital to found Zeal at 25 years old. Rather than hide his research and trading work in a hedge fund, Adam wanted to help others thrive in the markets. So he started sharing his now-world-famous market research work through very-affordable newsletters. Customers raved, and many millions of dollars of newsletter sales later Adam was blessed to become a self-made millionaire. He is very thankful to be living his dream, and plans to research, trade, and share wisdom through newsletters for the rest of his life. Adam is a Christian saved by Jesus Christ. He and his wife are greatly blessed with 2 children, and they live in Colorado.

There's a famous quote attributed to Heifetz (or any number of different folks) - that if I don't practice one day, I know it; two days, the critics know it; three days, the public knows it.So does that mean that we can't afford to take any days off, if we're truly serious about our craft? And what does it mean if we start to feel burned out and stale?Well...it could be my imagination, but I swear I once saw a video in which Heifetz said that he always took one day off from practicing a week. And I've heard a number of well-known musicians encourage students to take a day, or at least 24 hours off every week. So maybe it doesn't have to be "all gas, no brakes?"Get all the nerdy details here:Pre-Performance Apathy (and the Importance of Mentally Disengaging From Practice)* * *Have you ever wondered why it is exactly that things often sound better at home than they do on stage? If you've been confused (and frustrated) by the inconsistency of your performances, I put together a FREE 4-minute quiz called the Mental Skills Audit, which will help you pinpoint your mental strengths and weaknesses, and figure out what exactly to adjust and tweak in your preparation for more consistently optimal performances. It's 100% free, takes only 4 minutes, and you'll get a downloadable PDF with a personalized breakdown of where you stand in six key mental skill areas. You'll also get the Pressure Proof Practice Challenge, a free 7-day email course where you'll learn specific practice strategies that will help you perform your best, even under pressure.
