The Impossible Life
315. Three Ways to Fight Apathy

The Impossible Life

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2026 31:43 Transcription Available

Apathy is everywhere, and it often gets dressed up as wisdom, balance, or being “nonchalant.” But in this episode of The Impossible Life Podcast, Nick Surface and Garrett Unclebach expose apathy for what it really is: a dangerous mindset that keeps Christian men from living with faith, urgency, and purpose. Garrett defines apathy as sitting by and hoping things get better. It is the opposite of being all in, and it shows up in phrases like “it doesn't matter,” “someone else will do it,” “it's not a big deal,” or “I'll do it tomorrow.”This conversation challenges men to stop confusing rest with apathy. God designed rest, but apathy is something different. It is a spiritual and mental disease that slowly chokes out purpose, responsibility, and faithfulness. Nick and Garrett root the episode in Galatians 6:9, reminding men not to grow weary in doing good because there is a harvest if we do not give up. The point is not that men are responsible for everything. God is sovereign. But men are responsible for what God has placed in their hands.Garrett gives three tools to fight apathy: vision casting, purpose compression, and truth. Vision casting helps men see what could be instead of accepting a small life. Purpose compression brings the meaning of your entire life into the moment where you are tempted to quit. Truth, especially the truth of Scripture, cuts through the lies that say your life, effort, calling, or today do not matter. This episode is a call for Christian men to reject passivity, abide in God's Word, and live with the conviction that today matters.Get With NuWave Home Lenders By Clicking HereGet a Free 7 Day Trial On The Tailored Training App By Clicking HereJoin a group of likeminded Impossible Life listeners in our FREE Skool community by clicking here.Get the Purpose Playbook by clicking hereGet the FREE Basic Discipline Training 30 Day Program by clicking hereJoin us in Mindset Mastery by clicking hereLevel up your nutrition with IDLife by clicking hereGET IN TOUCHSocial Media - @theimpossiblelifeEmail - info@theimpossible.life

Ever feel like your soul needs a vacation? You're in the right place. The Jesus Over Everything Summer Reset is a collection of our favorite hot-topic discussions and unfiltered episodes with Lisa Whittle and friends. Over the next few weeks, we'll be diving into what it looks like to truly reset your mind, your body, and your soul – all with Jesus at the center.  Kicking off the first four episodes on resetting your soul, this show starts with a hard and honest question: Is comfortable Christianity even real? Lisa Whittle doesn't think so, and she's not afraid to say it. Comfort is everywhere we look; in what we wear, who we spend time with, and increasingly, how we follow Jesus. But comfort and true discipleship are rarely the same thing, and the cost of confusing the two is higher than most of us realize. If you've been feeling a tug on your heart to go deeper in your relationship with God – this topic is for you. Listen in to learn more: Why “comfort” is the enemy you don't see coming Comfortable Christianity defined: what it looks like in your everyday life The top 3 things comfort is costs you What does it actually require to have an “all-in life” for Jesus? Ready to let go of safe and predictable? A challenge for you. SONS of LIBERTY Radio with Bradlee Dean Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Hear Ye, Hear Ye: Public Judgment, Moral Crisis, and the Cost of Silence Public Abuse Allegations and Institutional Cover-Ups The episode opens with a prerecorded segment connecting the Penn State scandal and the Franklin cover-up through allegations of abuse, institutional silence, missing evidence, and the vulnerability of children served by charitable organizations. The segment presents these cases as examples of public trust being violated and argues that powerful individuals and institutions were protected while victims were left without justice. Historical Warnings and Biblical Government The program then moves into historical and religious quotations, including remarks attributed to Noah Webster, Thomas Jefferson, John Dickinson, Theodore Roosevelt, and other public figures. These segments frame the episode around the host's view that American civil government should be measured by biblical morality, constitutional limits, and public accountability rather than by the power of officials or institutions. Apathy, Entertainment, and Public Responsibility The host argues that Americans have become distracted by spectacle, entertainment, politics, and corporate influence while losing sight of liberty, justice, and civic vigilance. He compares modern public entertainment to historical forms of public spectacle and repeatedly warns that people who remain passive in a time of corruption help create the conditions for greater judgment, tyranny, and social disorder. Crime, Recidivism, and Judicial Failure A major theme of the episode is the host's claim that repeat offenders, weak courts, and delayed consequences are endangering the public. He presents recidivism statistics and multiple crime examples to argue that the justice system is failing victims, rewarding criminals, and generating money for institutional interests while neglecting what he describes as biblical justice and lawful consequence. Constitutional Rights and Corrupt Officials The episode also returns to constitutional government, especially the Second and Fourth Amendments, gun bans, confiscation concerns, and the responsibility of representatives to obey the Constitution. The host argues that citizens must not obey unconstitutional decrees and that public officials who violate constitutional limits should be lawfully removed rather than treated as rulers over the people. Religious Judgment, Political Influence, and Closing Appeal Near the end, the host discusses religious leaders, political figures, institutional deception, Freemasonry, intelligence influence, and the Epstein files as part of a broader argument that corruption survives because citizens and churches fail to bring lawful judgment. The closing appeal centers on the idea that people should not blame God for evil while refusing, in the host's view, to obey God's commandments and enforce justice. Franklin Coverup and Penn State Parallels The host opens the program by comparing the Franklin Coverup involving Larry King's alleged procurement of children from Boys Town for powerful figures and blackmail to the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State where the Second Mile charity was used to abuse boys with university officials covering it up. Suspicious Deaths and Investigations Details are given of investigator Gary Carradori's plane explosion that scattered child pornography evidence seized by the FBI and the mysterious disappearance of district attorney Ray Grecar whose computer showed searches on destroying hard drives both tied to attempts to expose the abuse rings. Biblical and Historical Foundations Quotations from Noah Webster Thomas Jefferson John Dickinson and other founders are presented to argue that Christian biblical principles form the basis of American liberty morality and civil government while neglecting Scripture leads to vice crime and oppression. Modern Moral Decay and Pride Culture The host condemns tolerance of pride parades transgender issues and normalization of child sexual abuse citing Romans 1 and Amos 6:1 as warnings that such tolerance hastens God's judgment on the nation while Christians remain apathetic at ease in Zion. Media Bias Crime Recidivism and Immigration Examples of unreported black-on-white crimes by repeat offenders with dozens of prior arrests are contrasted with media focus on white perpetrators while Somali gang involvement in a Minnesota shooting is said to be covered up and blamed on a white suspect illustrating selective reporting and failed justice. Conspiracy Controlled Opposition and Call to Justice Discussions range from Steven Spielberg's films attacking Christianity and CIA influence in Hollywood to Epstein files Netanyahu visits Zionist use of Muslims and Turning Point USA figures including Erica Kirk Candace Owens and Frank Turek portrayed as controlled opposition or heretics while urging listeners to stand for biblical justice against workers of iniquity.

Introduction to Malachi - Apathy

In this overview of Malachi Pastor Caffese traces the spiritual decline of Israel during the post-exilic period, culminating in the prophetic ministry of Malachi, the final voice of God before a 450-year silence. Though the temple was rebuilt and worship restored, the people's hearts had grown cold—marked by apathy, entitlement, and a focus on external rituals rather than genuine devotion. Malachi exposes this spiritual decay through a series of eight confrontational exchanges, revealing a people who questioned God's love and justice while neglecting the internal righteousness He demands. Yet amid the judgment, a remnant is preserved—those who feared the Lord and meditated on His name—and the promise of a coming Messiah and Elijah the prophet points forward to the ultimate restoration. The sermon underscores that true worship is not measured by outward observance but by inward transformation, and that God's silence was not abandonment, but preparation for the coming of Christ.

This week on the show, we are traveling back to the late 1930s to unlock the archives.  First, we're tackling a blunt operational reality from August of 1937 that hits just as close to home today: a Master speaking plainly about lodge apathy, and why the membership is just as much to blame as the leadership when a lodge loses its spark. Then, we're shifting gears to look at a massive historical transformation from March 1938. We'll trace the rapid progress of education in England, the impact of the printing press, and how a loosely organized group of illiterate operative stone-carvers evolved into a Speculative system designed to build the inner temples of our minds. It's a journey from practical stone-quarrying to moral philosophy—all about money, myth, and the power of discernment. Stay tuned! Topical Sermons / Speaker:Berry Kercheville The First Step in Reaching the Lost: the Need for Compassion Introduction: When we hear the term “evangelism,” it often either stimulates fear or apathy. Fear comes from the thought that I must be able to teach someone or I need to talk to a stranger or in some places, I need to knock on doors. Apathy comes from the belief that participating in evangelism is limited to those who have the “gift” of talking to people about the Lord. I don't have the gift, so I am exempted. First, it is a mistake to limit reaching the lost to the above descriptions. Being a church that highlights saving souls includes a vast array of talents and work that includes every Christian. We will talk about how we can all play a part in another lesson. Second, participating in evangelistic efforts is not optional. It is a critical part of our identity and an expectation of Jesus. Genesis 12; Exodus 19:5-6 (more later). 2 Timothy 1:6-7 God did not give us a “spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control.”  What is the first step in reaching the lost? The Heart of Jesus Defines Compassion, Matthew 9:35-38 When we “see the crowds,” what are our typical responses?  Judgmental Apathy  Is our first thought, this person needs the Lord?  How is seeing the crowds “harassed and helpless” different than how we see them? [We tend to see them “according to the flesh” (2 Corinthians 5:16), thus better off than us—wealthy and without a care. Or, they got themselves into the mess they have created of their life.] Therefore, what is Jesus seeing in the crowds to make him come to this conclusion? How We See Ourselves Determines Compassion, Luke 7:36-50 Why didn't Simon have compassion on the sinful woman? He did not see the seriousness of his own sin and therefore the greatness of his forgiveness. When we do not feel our own sinfulness and the magnitude of Jesus offering his life for us, we cannot have compassion on others. Example: the Pharisees tended to seek the outwardly moral person to convert (Cf. Matthew 23:15).  There is a tendency to look down on those who seem to be “worse sinners” than what we have been. It is a great danger of those who have “grown up in the church” or have lived fairly moral lives. Example: What made Paul the greatest of all “evangelists”? [1 Timothy 1:12-16] The Extent of Compassion, Luke 10:25-37 Why would this Samaritan have compassion on a Jew (those that the Samaritans hated) who was beaten when a priest and Levite would not? What did it take for the Samaritan to save the man who was beaten? Time, money, and sacrifice.  To love our neighbor is defined when we ask ourselves Jesus' question: “Who was neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” Asked another way, “Who will be neighbor to those who have been enslaved by the devil?”  Berry Kercheville The post Evangelism : The First Step in Reaching the Lost appeared first on Woodland Hills Church of Christ.

"In this book, I want to draw attention to a crisis in congregations that may not be on many people's radars: too many churches are less friendly than they realize," Kim writes. "Unfriendliness might be furtively devouring their church's ministry effectiveness, influence, and longevity." Every church thinks it's friendly. But Kim writes, "Just as in the first round of American Idol, where some contestants overstate their singing abilities as they audition, many Christians believe they are good, friendly welcomers even if they're not." Matthew D. Kim, Ph.D., is professor of preaching and pastoral leadership, holder of the George W. Apathy rarely shows itself openly, but it silently dulls conviction, softens courage, and weakens testimony over time. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar challenge believers to consider whether their once burning zeal for God has gradually faded into comfort and indifference. They explain that apathy is a slow drift—a growing complacency about sin, the lost, and God's glory. They warn that spiritual indifference is dangerous because it often cloaks itself in routine, distraction, and even outward activity. Believers must continually ask the Lord to search their hearts, put on the full armor of God, and stay alert against subtle compromise. The gospel can be offensive, so courage is needed to speak and act despite possible consequences. The guys explore how apathy often grows out of comfort and self-sufficiency. Looking to Revelation, they note that spiritual lukewarmness is described as ineffective for God's purposes, a condition rooted in ease rather than persecution. Comfort dulls urgency, while discomfort exposes dependency on God. Apathy toward the lost often stems from forgetfulness, forgetting the reality of judgment and the call to encourage fellow believers. The disciples themselves were prone to forget, proving this struggle is not new. The guys emphasize that self-defense in conflict can reveal hidden idols, and accusations can become opportunities for growth. The guys warn against a sentimental view of Jesus that neglects His authority and rule. Christ demands submission and rewards those who earnestly seek Him with more of Himself. Zeal comes from knowledge, recognizing the need for God and actively pursuing Him through prayer and Scripture. They caution against constant noise and spiritual distractions that mimic godliness without creating depth. Silence before God, intentional prayer, and a willingness to face fear are crucial for reigniting passion. Carrying gospel tracts, using free moments to share faith, and refusing to listen to fear foster a lifestyle focused on others rather than self-centered comfort. Finally, the guys remind listeners that the gospel not only saves but also sustains. Christians never graduate from relying on grace, and spiritual maturity deepens that awareness. Self-assessment, intentional remembrance, and consistent time in God's Word protect against drifting away. Today is the day to respond to His call because tomorrow is not guaranteed. By turning down the noise, running to Christ instead of chaos, and choosing diligence over distraction, believers can shift from apathy to fervor and live lives filled with holy desire and bold testimony.Send us Fan MailThanks for listening!
