Today, we're heading deep into the California desert for a cautionary tale about isolation, miscalculation, and just how unforgiving nature can be. Let's step into Death Valley and unravel the tragic mystery of the Death Valley Germans.
„Wer nicht hören will, muss fühlen." „Wer hoch hinaus will, der fällt tief."
What if the most overlooked health intervention isn't a supplement… a biohack… or a protocol? What if it's the structure you live inside? In this deeply personal solo episode, Darin shares the seven-year journey of rebuilding after losing everything, and why this new home isn't just a house, it's a biological experiment in sovereignty. From fire resilience and toxic-free materials to grounding floors, EMF elimination, circadian lighting, and water independence, this episode breaks down the science and intention behind designing a "Fatal Convenience–Free" home. This is about more than architecture. It's about reclaiming your environment as a health intervention. When California legalized recreational cannabis, Silicon Valley envisioned a new Gold Rush. Tushar Atre — a tech entrepreneur, surfer, and disruptor — thought he could bridge two worlds: venture capital and the black market. On Oct. 1, 2019, he was shot execution-style on his own property, hands bound. Investigative journalist Scott Eden, author of the new book "A Killing in Cannabis," spent four years unraveling what happens when ambition meets an industry that never forgot its outlaw roots.

A Near-Fatal Misunderstanding | John Sloan | 02.08.26 by Capshaw Baptist
This episode tells the real-life story of how the Society for Patient Safety and a network of children's hospitals used learning teams, proactive safety huddles, and simulations to reduce unplanned extubations in neonatal ICUs — cutting rates by 60% and preventing thousands of deaths. It covers the data, the frontline-led solutions, the narrowing of racial disparities, and an invitation to a small conference in Santa Fe to learn and share improvement practices.
If you listened to my novel The Cul de Sac you know that twenty minutes west of Boston (give or take) sits a quiet, secluded little place called Woodland Hills. The town exudes quintessential New England charm, pretty neighborhoods, classic New England architecture, and a handful of local businesses on a charming main street. Yes, it does contain a demonically infested cul de sac - but really, the rest of the town is quite normal. Its residents are typical New Englanders, hardy, preppy, and true to their regional reputation, they are kind, but they are not nice. It is a quiet town. A cozy town. A town where families live and work and go to school. So, next week, on Friday, February 13th - join me and the Woodland Hills West PTA for a cozy mystery right here on the Ghosts in the Burbs podcast feed. As always, Instagram is the best place to get updates on the podcast - go take a peek - you'll find that the WHW PTA has already taken over my account. See you back here next Friday - go Rams!

Minneapolis journalist reflects on continued ICE operation following deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti All eyes have been on Minneapolis in recent weeks, following the deployment of large numbers of ICE and Customs and Border Protection agents to the area in December. The heightened federal presence has coincided with deadly use-of-force incidents that have ignited national concern, including the fatal shootings of ICU nurse Alex Pretti on Jan. 24 and poet and mother of three Renée Nicole Good on Jan. 7. Those and other deaths, as well as the federal government's handling of the investigations, have become focal points of protests, calls for accountability, and broader debates about public safety and civil liberties. Earlier this week, the "Sound of Ideas" Host Stephanie Haney spoke with Minnesota Star Tribune Opinion Editor Phillip Morris. Morris is also a former longtime columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He shared what he's been seeing on the ground and his thoughts on the broader political and legal ramifications to come. Wednesday's show will start with that conversation, then we'll turn to Springfield, Ohio, where Gov. Mike DeWine recently warned of a potential ICE operation coming to central Ohio. More than 12,000 Haitian immigrants with temporary legal status were about to see their protections end this week, before a judge delayed that order Monday. Guest: - Phillip Morris, Opinion Editor & Vice President, Minnesota Star Tribune Judge ruling keeps legal protections for Springfield's Haitian immigrants intact Springfield, Ohio is home to a large Haitian immigrant community living with Temporary Protected Status. TPS is a federal designation that allows people from countries facing extraordinary conditions such as natural disasters or ongoing instability, to live and work legally in the U.S. For Haitians, that protection was first granted after a massive earthquake in 2010 and has been renewed several times amid continued political and humanitarian crises, such as the assassination of Haiti's president in 2021. The most recent extension was set to expire on Feb. 3. But on Monday, a federal district judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration from ending TPS. Fatal overdoses are rising among adults 45 and older and stigma often keeps this age group out of the conversation. In this episode, Dr. Philip Chan, Consultant Medical Director at the Rhode Island Department of Health and a practicing primary care physician, discusses Rhode Island's No Matter Why You Use campaign. Dr. Chan explains why middle-aged and older adults face elevated overdose risk, how isolation, medical prescribing, and a contaminated drug supply intersect, and why personal storytelling is key to reducing stigma about accessing care.
