In Oklahoma, the Edmondson family was royalty. For decades, the Edmondson name had been synonymous with public service, integrity, and leadership. Some people even called them "the Kennedys of Oklahoma." It was because, generation after generation, they answered the call to serve. Sarah's grandfather served in the United States Congress. Her great-uncle was both the governor of Oklahoma and, later, a U.S. senator. Her uncle served as the state's attorney general. And her father, Jim Edmondson, would become a justice on the Oklahoma Supreme Court. Their reputation had been built on a deep commitment to the people of Oklahoma. The Edmondsons weren't known for scandal. And then came Sarah. Join Jen and Cam as we discuss ‘From Fiction to Fatal: William Savage & Patsy Byers.' Shout out to Jason P, who suggested the episode! An eighteen-year-old went to Horn Island with friends. He never came back. And before the investigation was complete, one of those friends appeared on national television and then sat down with a national magazine to tell his version of what happened. Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis weighs in on whether that decision helps the truth or buries it — and what it costs when a witness starts building a public record of statements while the evidence is still being processed. All three friends lawyered up. The family has Ben Crump and a full parallel investigation running — their own autopsy, their own phone forensics, private investigators pulling dozens of witness calls a day. Crump has pointed to one detail that cuts through everything else: the friends had Nolan's phone and keys and didn't tell investigators. The family had to track the phone using Life360 and go get it themselves.Faddis breaks down the behavior of every party in the case through a former prosecutor's lens. What the friends should be doing if they're innocent. What the family's shadow investigation means for the official one. And what the Lauren Agee case — where friends invoked the Fifth Amendment in civil depositions after no criminal charges — tells us about what everyone connected to this case should be preparing for. Tony Brueski, Robin, and Eric Faddis break it all down live.—Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? She played Robin Russo on The Secret Life of Alex Mack. Millions of 90s kids knew her face. Nobody knew what was happening behind the scenes.Natanya Ross started using in her teens like a lot of kids in the industry did. Party drugs turned into heroin by her twenties. She had one shot left, an audition for Eight Mile, and she blew it. Showed up high off cocaine and lost her team, her career, everything that took her childhood to build. She ended up living in her car on Skid Row. In and out of treatment more times than she can count. She was there the night someone she loved, a well known name in Hollywood, died of an overdose right in front of her.Now 44 and sober, Natanya works in treatment helping people who are exactly where she used to be. She just launched her own podcast to tell the stories nobody wants to talk about out loud.Today's episode is brought to you by Seasons in Malibu. For over 18 years, Seasons has been a sanctuary for individuals seeking to reclaim their lives from addiction and mental health challenges. Our story began with a simple but profound vision: To create a luxurious sanctuary for individuals struggling with addiction or mental health issues, where they can receive the finest, evidence-based treatment in the world.Built on Compassion, Driven by ExcellenceWhat started as a small number of compassionate professionals has grown into one of the nation's most respected luxury treatment centers. But growth has never meant losing sight of what matters most—the individual engaging with our therapists, one-on-one, taking the courageous first step toward healing. From the beginning, we understood that truly transformative treatment requires more than clinical protocols. It demands a personalized approach, led by the most qualified professionals, in an environment that nurtures the whole person. This week, we're focusing on crimes that target children and adolescents, crimes that are often overlooked. These aren't grizzly murder cases. They're incidents that happen in a pattern, seemingly right before our eyes. Young athletes pushed beyond their limits until they die, curious teens extorted to the point where they take their own lives, and Jeffrey Epstein's systemic abuse of girls. Including interviews with Epstein survivor Sharlene Rochard, journalist Sam Zeff and crime expert Brad Garrett. Featuring audio from the Dana & Parks Show out of KMBZ in Kansas City, A New Morning out of WBEN News and Talk in Buffalo and the Scoot show out of WWL in New Orleans.

This week saw the first fatal ICE shooting since Minnesota. In Houston, an ICE officer shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. It's been six months since the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and the federal government hasn't properly investigated either one. And it has stood in the way of state agents trying to find out what happened—failing, for example, to give state investigators access to Good's car. The face of this federal response is Todd Blanche, the acting attorney general who is facing a Senate confirmation hearing next week. For a system that assumes the federal government keeps state and local law enforcement from committing civil-rights abuses, what happens when the roles are reversed? How far can states such as Minnesota go? The Atlantic's staff writer Quinta Jurecic discusses the Good and Pretti investigations, how Blanche has warped the Justice Department, and how state prosecutors and federal judges are pushing back. - - - Get more from your favorite Atlantic voices when you subscribe.
