Elmer J. McCurdy (January 1, 1880 – October 7, 1911) was an American outlaw who was killed in a shoot-out with police after robbing a train in Oklahoma in October 1911. Dubbed "The Bandit Who Wouldn't Give Up", his mummified body was first put on display at an Oklahoma funeral home and then became a fixture on the traveling carnival and sideshow circuit during the 1920s through the 1960s. After changing ownership several times, McCurdy's remains eventually wound up at The Pike amusement zone in Long Beach, California, where they were discovered by crew members for the television series The Six Million Dollar Man and positively identified in December 1976.

Today's True Weird Stuff - A Real Stiff Elmer McCurdy was an American outlaw who couldn't pull off a smooth heist to save his life. He tried to use his Army training with nitroglycerin to rob banks and trains, often to no avail. After accidentally robbing the wrong train in 1911, a drunken McCurdy met his demise after firing at the deputy sheriffs searching for him. And for the next 65 years, McCurdy's mummified corpse wound up being used as a traveling sideshow attraction known as "The Bandit Who Wouldn't Give Up."

Comic lovers, this episode is for you! It was our pleasure to have Jordan Morris, comic author, comedian, and podcaster, on the show to discuss his recently published graphic novel, Youth Group. We discuss the comics that introduced us to thought bubbles and visual storytelling, Bowen "Bones" McCurdy's incredible artwork, writing comedy for print, the way youth groups were always relegated to hip, underground spaces in the 90s, some truly gnarly demonic entities, and working together to take down the big bad. Also, Nikki had a ton of fun creating sound effects and stings for this episode! Purchase Youth Group wherever you get your comics! Buy links below, or hit up your local comics store for a copy. This week's episode tells the story of Elmer McCurdy, a not too successful bandit of the old west who was eventually killed in Oklahoma in 1911. However, McCurdy's story didn't end then. After being embalmed, no one wanted to pay for his burial, and he went on display at the funeral home. Elmer's desiccated eventually toured the United States in various ways until it was forgotten that he was actually a real person and not a wax figure. The truth of his identity wasn't discovered until the 1970's when he was discovered while filming a TV episode in an amusement park dark ride. Take a listen and find out all about Elmer, who's like only got more interesting after he was dead.

With the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's annual Brake Safety Week inspection initiative kicking off August 26 with stepped-up brake checks and inspections, generally, in jurisdictions across North America, we're looking back at a podcast from earlier in the year – February 2024 to be exact. The episode featured Wisconsin-headquartered owner-operator Warren McCurdy and a central point of view about what he feels the roadside inspection system was designed for. Something that's, well, gotten a little off track with how states, the FMCSA, and some fleets treat so-called “safey scores” derived from inspections and associated violations. As you're hauling this week, if you get a quote unquote “assist” from an inspector out there, take note of the approach he or she takes. Is it “prevention” of accidents that is the ultimate goal? McCurdy, at the top of the podcast, made clear his bone to pick with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's CSA scoring program and all its ripple effects throughout trucking and roadside inspection systems. After a trailer tire lost air in transit sufficient to take the tire off the rim -- the trailer empty, the tire problem unnoticed by McCurdy before inspection -- the owner-operator's leasing carrier assessed points for the violation modeled on the FMCSA's internal Driver Safety Measurement System nearly enough to void McCurdy's lease. This sort of "accountability" isn't, the owner-operator felt, what roadside inspections were designed for. The inspector in this case in Washington State did his job to the letter, and caught the in-transit flattened tire in plenty time to save any real damaging outcome. For all that, McCurdy is thankful. "I think that these inspections are good. They should be preventative things," he said. "Nobody wants to go down the road with flat tires." Yet, he added, "I don't think we should be penalized for something that is not something that you did intentionally." That goes for the motor carrier as well. There's a reason carriers like his own assess those points -- because they are incurring the same level of severity weighting in the Carrier SMS. Potential changes to the Carrier SMS notwithstanding (FMCSA isn't looking at those same changes for the Driver SMS), the podcast this week dives back into what's at issue in cases like these, in which carriers subject to the severity weighting system for violations pass that on, with their own systems to hold drivers and owner-operators to a degree of accountability themselves, relying on the federal points system to assess and prevent damage to their own scores. Susan McCurdy tried her hand at the DataQs system in a vain attempt to contain the damage in this case by challenging the violation. But given the inspector was doing what he should have done here -- alerting McCurdy to the problem tire on his trailer, conducting an inspection, then reporting the results into the federal system as required -- there was nothing DataQs was going to be able to help correct about the fundamental nature of the situation. More fundamentally, though, it's the very nature of the CSA scoring system that makes accountability problematic for owner-operator McCurdy here. Nobody indeed intends to run around with flat tires. With respect to any violation, McCurdy urges regulators take a long hard look at what they're holding carriers and drivers accountable for by scoring them as they do. Welcome to Tom Rhodes Smart Camp! Hooray, it's the first day of summer, my favorite season! I'm in my apartment with a massive, seeded watermelon from Sprouts. What's with the obsession with seedless watermelons? I've been home for a few days between gigs in Minneapolis and San Jose. My suitcase is open, laundry is done, and I'm half a watermelon down. Remember when we thought swallowing watermelon seeds would make one grow in your stomach? Bring it on! After two rough summers, I'm feeling great and ready for joy. Did you know frisbees started as pie plates in the 1870s, and popsicles were invented by an 11-year-old in 1905? I just spent quality time with my mom in Florida. She's 85, sharp, and has an amazing front porch. She beat me at Scrabble twice and uses hilarious expressions like “up the ding wat?” and “out the wazoo.” One of my oldest friends, Kodak, now called Dak after Kodak sued him, took us out on his boat. We explored swamp canals straight out of The Princess and the Frog. I hit Atlanta's Punchline and Sarasota's McCurdy's, taking my mom along. She got to see the full scope of being a comedian. Then, I had a blast in Minneapolis with friends, including a Prince-themed Twins game. I'm excited about my upcoming trip to Oregon, hitting Eugene, Portland, and Pendleton for a rodeo and a Charlie Crockett concert. Remember to love yourself, practice positive self-talk, and be grateful. Here's to peak summer joy and hooray for humanity! Hooray for humanity! We're dropping new episodes every Thursday-ish. Public Health Careers podcast episode with Matthew McCurdy, MPH
In this episode, I am joined by my friend Bart McCurdy to talk about the deceptions and dangerous false teachings from Bethel Church out of Redding, California. Bethel is a very popular mega church pastored by Bill Johnson, and over the years has come under fire in the public eye for their many different antics and outlandish behavior. Bart McCurdy shares a little bit about Bethel's history, stories and examples of their teachings, and how Bethel uses their music (Bethel Music) to further promote their false teachings. Is Bethel Church and Bethel Music sources we should be allowing into our church worship services? I'm a music artist, worship leader, wife, mom (I wear a lot of hats), and host of the Godly Whistleblower podcast. I seek to shine a light on popular teachings and music in the church today and share what Scripture teaches on how we are to worship in spirit and in truth within the church gathering. My desire is to learn together with my listeners how Christians are to live lives ultimately as a pleasing worship to God. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd appreciate so much if you left me a review!
