Chinatown (1974) is a neo-noir crime thriller, directed by Roman Polanski from a screenplay by Robert Towne. Based loosely on the Owens Valley water wars in Los Angeles from the early twentieth century, the film follows private investigator J.J. (“Jake”) Gittes (Jack Nicholson) as he pursues a series of leads that take him into the dark underbelly of power and corruption in 1930s Los Angeles. A woman claiming to be "Evelyn Mulwray” initially hires Gittes to follow her husband Hollis, whom she suspects of infidelity. Gittes discovers that Noah Cross (John Huston), the father of the real Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway), had Hollis, his former business partner and head of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, killed. Hollis had learned of Cross's plan to force famers in the Northwest valley to sell their land by cutting off their irrigating water and purchasing it through dummy syndicates on the cheap with the aim of developing the land into valuable Los Angeles real estate. Gittes also learns that the young woman he falsely suspected Hollis of having an affair with is Evelyn's sister and daughter—the product of Evelyn's rape by Cross when she was fifteen. While Gittes ultimately unravels the mystery, he is unable to stop the powerful Cross from achieving his goals or prevent the tragic fate that awaits Evelyn. My guest to talk about this venerated New Hollywood era classic is Emeritus Professor John Walton of the University of California, Davis.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction3:37 Chinatown's historical and literary elements6:28 How the film adapts historical events and figures 12:13 The private investigator in film and popular culture18:09 Jake Gittes and the power structure24:27 “Either you bring the water to LA, or you bring LA to the water”28:17 The private eye and the police32: 56 The mystery and impenetrability of power35:00 How Chinatown affects perceptions of the water wars38:43 Public law affecting water allocation and management40:05 The formalities of law and the power structure beneath it44:15 “The Defects of Total Power” Further reading:Brownstein, Ronald, “The 1970s Movie that Explains 2020s America,” The Atlantic (June 20, 2024)Hoffman, Abraham, Vision or Villainy: Origins of the Owens Valley-Los Angeles Water Controversy (1981)Kahrl, William L., “The Politics of the California Water: Owens Valley and the Los Angeles Aqueduct, 1900 – 1927,” Hastings West-Northwest J. The Northern Mental Health Nursing Qualitative Research Forum meets three times a year to connect Mental Health Nurse researchers interested in, and conducting, qualitative research, methodologies and innovations. If you wish to be added to the mailing list, please contact james.turner@shu.ac.uk. The following session was recorded at their fourth event on Friday 17 November 2023. With thanks to Prof Karen Wright and Dr James Turner for organising the event and the invitation to support with recording the sessions. Title: Back to the Future: How can Enrolled Nurses (Mental Health) experience of education and training inform nurse associate and other apprenticeship programmes Abstract: The return to the two-year programme of Nursing education draws comparisons to the Enrolled Nursing route which was phased out in the 1990s. The reasons for the Enrolled Nurses introduction were very similar to the Nursing Associate - a chronic lack of registered nurses and subsequent care gap in meeting patient need. Thus, looking back to the education and training experiences of Enrolled Nurses who also experienced a two-year apprenticeship programme and work-based learning appears to be timely. Using a historical qualitative methodology has potential to provide insights toward informing the future development of the two-year programme Trainee Nursing Associate route and beyond. The aim of the proposed research study is to explore Enrolled Nurses' experiences of education and training to inform the Nursing Associate and other relevant apprenticeship programmes.

Kim Stanley Robinson, SF novelist of renown, has three marvelous trilogies: The Three Californias, Science in the Capital and Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars. But lately it is The Ministry for the Future, his "science fiction nonfiction novel" (Jonathan Lethem) that has politicians, Eurocrats and the rest of us pondering how policy might fight climate change. In this Books in Dark Times conversation from the RTB vaults (you can also read a longer version that appeared as an article in our partner Public Books) Stan and John start out with Stan's emerging from the Grand Canyon into the pandemic moment of late March, 2020. Then they discuss Stan's sense that SF is the realism of the day and his take on “cognitive estrangement.” Finally, they happen upon a shared admiration for the great epic SF poet, Frederick Turner. Small fact connecting him to RTB-land: he completed a literature PhD directed by Frederic Jameson with a dissertation-turned-book on the novels of Phillip K. Dick. If you can't watch live a recording will be sent to all virtual attendees in a week or so. In place of a weekly roundup, here is Episode 3 of Monster in the Mirror! Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts! Monster in the Mirror Episode 3: The trope of the “Asiatic criminal mastermind” has haunted Asians for over a century, from the notorious Fu Manchu right up to the myths of dastardly Wuhan virologists circulating in the COVID era. But these myths, which have helped fuel a historic spike in anti-Asian racism, didn't start with Sax Rohmer's “Devil Doctor.” Before Fu Manchu, there was Dr. Yen How, the villain of M.P. Shiel's smash hit The Yellow Danger (1898). In this episode, we examine how Asians today live not only in the shadow of the ruthless Yen How, but also in the shadow of the mindless monster that Yen How commands: the “Heathen Chinee.” Pre-Order Brad's new book: https://www.amazon.com/Preparing-War-Extremist-Christian-Nationalism/dp/1506482163 For access to the full Orange Wave series, click here: https://irreverent.supportingcast.fm/products/the-orange-wave-a-history-of-the-religious-right-since-1960 To Donate: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/BradleyOnishi Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/straightwhiteamericanjesus SWAJ Apparel is here! https://straight-white-american-jesus.creator-spring.com/listing/not-today-uncle-ron Narrated and Scripted By Lucas Kwong Voice acting: Christian Young Valdovinos, Lucas Kwong Sound Effects courtesy of royalty free sources Played N Faved, The Sound Source, Free Sound Effects Theme Song “Lair” by The Brother K Melee (brotherkmusic.com) End song “Pledge Of Allegiance” by The Brother K Melee (brotherkmusic.com) Various film and news audio clips used under fair/educational use laws. JEDucation - Conversations in Parenting and Jewish Education
"One of the most important things in education is the home you come from becasue you get more from the home than you get from the school." This weeks episode is very special and dear to me, as I had the opportunity to sit down with my wife's grandfather, Zaida, the patriarch of our family. Zaida was a principal in Winnipeg for many years, as well as very involved in Moshava as the Rosh Mosh. It was so special to sit down with Zaida and hear his story of how his parents and him made it out of Europe before the war, and what it was like growing up in the house of immigrants, and the special upbringing he had. We discuss how Zaida got involved in education, and hear many sagely pieces of advice and wisdom from a true educator and father par excellence. You are in for a real treat. Enjoy! "I should say my father had a lot to with the Jewish education even though he himself was not an educator, but he insisted we went to Jewish school and learn. He didn't make a lot, but the first thing he would do would put money towards the education." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jeducation/support
Britain's largest rewilding initiative has been earmarked by the UK and Scottish Governments as a globally-prestigious showcase project to help nature, people and climate, as the United Nations (UN) Decade of Ecosystem Restoration steps up action to halt climate breakdown before 2030. Led by Trees for Life, Affric Highlands is a community-focused 30-year plan to create a vast nature recovery area of over half a million acres stretching from Loch Ness to Scotland's west coast. Affric Highlands recommended for re-wilding UN flagship status It will restore woodland, peatland and riverside habitats to help save native species from extinction, boost biodiversity, sustain new nature-based jobs and support re-peopling. The UK Government and Scottish Governments have recommended Affric Highlands for UN World Restoration Flagship status – joining a prestigious roster of global projects, whose final shortlist of 10 will be announced later this month. Steve Micklewright, Chief Executive of Trees for Life, said: “The huge environmental challenges of the coming decade need to be met with huge ambition. Affric Highlands is about scaling up ecological restoration, working collaboratively, and seeing nature as a key ally in tackling climate breakdown. We want to show how nature, local communities and livelihoods can help each other thrive. “We're delighted that both the Scottish and UK Governments have given Affric Highlands their endorsement for flagship status. It's increasingly clear that rewilding offers hope for nature, climate and people.” Affric Highlands brings together a huge range of local partners to create a bold new vision for the area. Its ambition is to demonstrate how the return of nature and recovery of landscapes can strengthen existing livelihoods and create new opportunities. Stephanie Kiel, Affric Highlands Team Leader, said: “We are working closely with a range of different landowners and land managers to develop and link-up nature restoration projects across the Affric Highlands area, which encompasses Glens Affric, Cannich, Moriston and Shiel. People are a central part of this vision, and more resilient ecosystems will support a greater diversity of job opportunities that can help sustain rural communities. “We are providing the expertise to help restore native woodlands, including through natural regeneration while returning much-needed trees to the banks of upland streams and rivers to provide vital shade, nutrients and shelter for Scotland's struggling Atlantic salmon.” Golden eagles, red squirrels, red grouse, short-eared owls, mountain hares, trout, ospreys and otters will benefit from the improved and better-connected wild habitats. The Affric Highlands emblem is the Scottish wildcat, and there will be efforts to help save this species from extinction. Trees for Life is working with local schools, community groups, and health and youth services so that young people can develop their voices to help shape the direction of Affric Highlands. The introduction of a Green Leadership Award for young people and a wellbeing-focused nature photography project are currently underway. Such broad community engagement is one of the UN's key principles for natural recovery. Competition for UN World Restoration Flagship status is extremely strong, with over 400 nominations expected from around the world. The successful 10 projects will make ecosystem restoration tangible for a broad audience and inspire a global movement to scale-up efforts to prevent, halt and reverse the collapse of biodiversity worldwide. Affric Highlands is a Trees for Life initiative being delivered in partnership with Rewilding Europe. It is part of Rewilding Europe's acclaimed European network of nine awe-inspiring rewilding landscapes, which also include Romania's Southern Carpathians, Croatia's Velebit Mountains, and the Oder Delta in Germany and Poland. Trees for Life has been rewilding parts of the Affric Highlands landscape for the past three decad...
