Irish specialty coffee group, Coffeeangel, has agreed a landmark deal with the Dunsany Estate in Co. Meath and Irish clean-tech company Bionua which will see it commit 5% of its profits over the next 5 years to buy biodiversity credits. This is the first time such a deal has been completed in Ireland and only the second time across Europe after Swedbank's purchase of biodiversity credits in 2023. Bionua deploys its cutting-edge technology to monitor nature in real time, producing scientifically backed data. Driven by AI, it utilises a combination of satellite multispectral imaging and ground-based sensors to accurately quantify carbon sequestration and biodiversity, both above and below ground. Bionua connects corporate organisations and SMEs withlandowners and deploys its tech to produce biodiversity credits. The lands, under long-term stewardship agreements, are dedicated solely to enhancing biodiversity and capturing carbon, using entirely natural processes, and adhering strictly to a policy of causing no harm. The first year of this deal with Coffeeangel will represent the removal and storage of a minimum of 80,000 kgs of harmful carbon from the atmosphere at Dunsany Nature Reserve, and the direct involvement in the protection and enhancement of its unique biodiversity habitat above and below ground which include some of Ireland's most important flora and fauna. William Butterly, founder of Bionua said: "Through our biodiversity credits, we are giving companies the chance to make a real-world difference locally by supporting the rewilding of nature and in so doing combating biodiversity loss. Thanks to scientifically backed data and state of the art technology, Bionua's biodiversity credits offer companies not just a way of meeting their sustainability goals but a way to visibly showcase their commitment locally to their customers, stakeholders and the general public. This is the first sale of credits of many that we envisage from our partnership with Dunsany Nature Reserve which has the capacity to produce hundreds of credits per month for organisations whether they are large corporates or SMEs". Biodiversity credits are verifiable and quantifiable financial instruments designed to incentivise investment in the restoration, conservation, and development of biodiversity. Biodiversity credits offer an incentive to large landowners to generate income by preserving and enhancing the biodiversity of their lands. By purchasing biodiversity credits, organisations can also take nature-positive action to contribute to the conservation of ecosystems, protection of endangered species, and promotion of overall biodiversity, while also meeting their environmental and sustainability objectives. The Biodiversity Credits produced by Bionua are to the ISO 14064-2 Standard and independently verified by a third party. Sustainability reporting obligations have increased for organisations with the introduction of the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, which requires organisations to identify and assess material impacts, risks and opportunities that relate to biodiversity. Karl Purdy, CEO of Coffeeangel, said: "As pioneers of the Irish specialty coffee scene, we understand the environmental challenges that our industry faces and that we have a responsibility to tackle these. Coffeeangel has always had a long standing commitment to sustainability - whether that is using renewable-sourced energy to run our shops, using locally-produced, fully recyclable packaging or launching social initiatives like our #YourCupOurFuture programme. "But we also fully accept that these steps are simply not enough. We are very proud and delighted to invest 5% of Coffeeangel's profits with Bionua to support the biodiversity benefits via the continued rewilding of Dunsany Nature Reserve over the next 5 years. Doing so will allow us to practically, tangibly and verifiably offset our carbon impact". The historic Dunsany Estate in Meath spans back to...

A bit of a dark story from famed fantasist and progenitor of modern fantasy Lord Dunsany. Dunsany's speciality was writing stories that felt like ‘real' myths from a forgotten time in our world and this is no exception. The story of a great city, whose greatness and the warriors that led to it was in the past. And the challenges that arise from that. This one does get a bit exciting, but the cadence is mysterious so I'm sure you will fall asleep before the exciting bit arrive. And those are only relative anyway. Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron Dunsany Edward John Moreton Draw Plunkett, or Lord Dunsany was known to his friends as Eddie. Lord Dunsany was born in 1878 in London England and died in 1957 in Dublin Ireland.   Though born in England, he was heir to the oldest inhabited house in Ireland: Dunsany Castle near Tara. In County Meath. He worked to support the Abbey Theatre in Dublin with W B Yeats and Lady Gregory. In addition he was chess and pistol champion of Ireland. He was also a great traveller and, as you can tell from this story: he was a habitual hunter with horse and hounds. He was a prolific writer produced over ninety volumes of fiction, essays, poems and plays. His most famous book is possibly The King of Elfland's Daughter and he is thought to be the first fantasy writer who set out the later genre that produced the Narnia books and The Lord of the Rings and ultimately Game of Thrones.  Thirteen At Table This story was suggested by Mike Jenkins. We have a beautiful description of the Kent countryside on a spring evening as they follow the fox. This is indeed a fox hunt and may not be to everyone's taste but is part of the story. I like the idea that a gentleman at hounds may request a bed from any other gentleman who has a gentleman's house. It's s simple tale thereafter. We have host, Sir Richard Arlen, who says he has lived a wicked life. What he has done to this succession of women that means he has to dine with them every night for the past fifty years is not explained. But we understand he has wronged them and we guess perhaps he was somewhat of a rake. As the dinner goes on. It is explained that Mr Linton drinks a lot as he is dehydrated. He is also tired. He starts off by humouring the guest and then takes to his story of his wonderful twenty point hunt. The best hunt that ever was and a tale that grows in the telling. I am thinking this is a good humoured dig at huntsmen and their stories.  And as he feels the need for an audience to tell his tale, slowly the ghosts become visible to Mr Linton and he begins to treat them as real people rather than as figments of his imagination. It is so slowly and delicately done that it is very effective and smooth.  In the end he offends the ghosts by something he said. They are clearly very sensitive and collect slights. He is mortified, but the host is supremely grateful.  There is a happy ending in that Sir Richard Arlen It's a humorous and pretty story. I haven't read much Dunsany, but I'm keen to read more now. Another example of the kind of weird dark poetic prose of Lovecraft's post-Dunsany phase, this was recorded (according to the date pencilled on the tape reel) on Halloween, 1949. Desmond Lawrence's ashy, desolate voice is in fine form on this brief recording, and it is to be lamented that Studio Black Catacomb had so much going against it; else his might be another name well-known to listeners of today.

On this edition of Parallax Views, a new movie called The Green Sea tells a story that combines straightforward drama with the magical realism reminiscent of authors like Haruki Murakami (Kafka on the Shore, Norwegian Wood) and elements of the kind of ghost stories bringing to mind M.R. James. Its writer and director has an interesting lineage, to say the least. Oliver Plunkett is the 21st Baron of Dunsany, one of the oldest continuously lived in estates in all of Ireland. He's the ancestor of the fantasy writer Lord Dunsany (aka Edward Plunkett, the 18th Baron of Dunsany), who influenced such authors as Cthulhu mythos creator H.P. Lovecraft and The Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien. He's a noted fan of black metal and death metal, has directed numerous zombie and horror films, and environmentalist. In terms of the latter he has gained both praise and scorn for his notorious decision to rewild the Dunsany estate, turning it into the Dunsany Nature Preserve. With the recently released The Green Sea, Plunkett made his feature film debut as a director. And, as it turns out, the film has many deeply personal and even autobiographic elements in it that shed light on Plunkett's views on creativity, isolation, alienation, the mysteries of life, the importance of social relationships, finding solace in nature, regret and redemption, self-expression, and the power of the imagination. From the IMDB Plot summary for The Green Sea: Simone (Katharine Isabelle), an American writer living a solitary life in Irish countryside, is haunted by visions of her past which begin to intertwine with the fantasy world of the novel she is writing, blurring the lines between reality and the fantasy. Her life changes, when the protagonist of her book, known only as "Kid", played by up and coming Irish actress Hazel Doupe (Float Like A Butterfly), appears to her as a victim of a drunk driving incident that forces the pair together. This sets up the beginning of an unlikely relationship, ultimately setting off a chain of events that will force Simone to face her sinister past. Randal Plunkett joins us on this edition of Parallax Views to discuss this exciting new film that can only be described as a mysterious hybrid of genres. In addition, our conversation allows us to delve into the history of the Dunsany family estate, the musical genius of musicians Scott Conner of the infamous black metal and "doomgrass" one-man-bands Xasthur and Nocturnal Poisoning as well as Justin K. Broadrick of the industrial metal act Godflesh and the post-metal pioneers Jesu, the brilliance of The Green Sea's lead actress Katharine Isabelle (know for her title role in the innovative werewolf movie franchise Ginger Snaps as well as appearances in Freddy vs. Jason, American Mary, and hit TV shows like Hannibal and The Order among others), the rewilding of the Dunsany estate and the backlash it has caused against Randal, the difficulties of making an independent film that blends different genres, and The Green Sea's themes of alienation, the powers of the imagination, alienation, the mysteries inherent to life and consciousness, and how it all relates to Randal's own philosophy and experiences. All that and much more on this jam-packed nearly two hour long edition of Parallax Views.

Allow me to introduce myself as the curator of this grisly collection.Besides my little introduction, I've included a short story here for you from Lord Dunsany: "The Ghosts."Edward Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany, is one of the earliest and most influential examples of fantasy and dark fiction writers. His works are notable and many, but some of the most popular include “The King of Elfland's Daughter” (1924), “The Gods of Pegana” (1905), and “The Sword of Welleran” (1908). In this story, Lord Dunsany uses the typical human tendency to question the hereafter and what it entails – specifically its inhabitants. With a simple short story, he probes the human condition, our frailties, and our fears.Narrator: Russell Archey https://www.ravonmedia.com/Music By: Lucas King https://www.youtube.com/c/LucasKingPianoMusic/featured

Welcome to Bringing Design Closer, the podcast focussed on discussing Designs role in tackling  complex societal issues. Our goal is to have conversations that inspire and to help move the dial forward for organisations to become more human-centred in their approach to solving complex business and societal problems. In this episode we welcome Randal Plunkett who is also Lord Dunsany of Dunsany land in Meath, an area 50 miles north west of Dublin City in Ireland. Randal's family are deeply entrenched in my upbringing - as a great great great great great great uncle of Randals was Oliver Plunkett, who was brutally murdered by Oliver Cromwell in 1681 and who's head is still on display in the town where I grew up, Drogheda. Randal is one of the last blood lines of Oliver Plunkett - so it's been fantastic to connect and hear stories about his up bringing. I recently spotted an interview with Randal in The Guardian newspaper in the UK where he was interviewed about one of the largest Rewilding projects that I had heard of - which is part of his 1700 acre estate.  In the conversation we speak about what led Randal to take the leap into Rewilding, how it was perceived amongst his family and community and mostly importantly, what happened to the land as the years went by.  We speak about the darker side of life as a Lord, who is responsible for not only maintaining an estate - but protecting it for future generations both from environmental damage and decay but also from human damage of the land and hunters who come to prey on the animals who have returned to the Dunsany Estate and Reserve. It's a good one - let's jump in... The 1600 acre site dates back to the 10th century and includes the castle, a church and a lot of land. While traditionally, farms have filled the land, Randal has spent the last seven years doing something completely different. He has established Dunsany Nature Reserve which has seen him 'rewild' around 750 acres of the estate to nature. This means no livestock, no planting, sowing or weeding.     View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Dunsany Nature Reserve (@dunsanynaturereserve) Speaking to Dermot and Dave, Randal explained what inspired them to begin rewilding and shared some of the incredible animals he has encountered on the grounds. Relax by the Fireplace with Joey and let him read you a story set to sleep-inducing music and ambient sound. Nox is your Safe space at bedtime to relax, feel safe, and get a good night's sleep.  On tonight's episode, I read a good news story about an adorable horse that has been walking the streets by herself for 10 years. Then go into tonight's story. Tonight's story is called The Sword Of Welleran and this is one of the stories and writers that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien who you probably know from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The Sword of Welleran", is perhaps one of my favorite fantasy short stories. It concerns the invasion of the people of idyllic Merimna, who have no desire or knowledge of battle, though the city was once home to the greatest heroes in the land, and how the people of this city are saved from invasion. Instantly this story drew me into another world through Dunsany's simply elegant storytelling. I could envision the city of Merimna and all of its monuments (being described somewhat like a fantastic Greek or Roman city) perfectly as Dunsany must have dreamed them and not a word is wasted.   “Will you come with me, sweet Reader?

Of Lost Things Written for Television by: Toni Graphia Directed by: Brendan Maher This week's Outlander episode is brought to you by boxes of tissues and excellent tunes. Shout out to Bear McCreary the musical mastermind.  You must listen to the podcast to get my full thoughts and rantings.  Long story short, Jamie is protective of those he loves. He's willing to do what he must for their gain or to prevent their harm. He's a man of deep compassion and honor. When faced with blackmail and coercion, he rises the occasion. He wins the Dunsany's over when he saves their grandson. Jamie's a hero. His sense of normalcy and place, is shattered as the boy begins to resemble him. The man is given his leave and heads back to Lallybroch after 8 years serving his parole at Helwater. He adds the young Ellesmere, the son he cannot claim, to his list of lost things as the episode closes. He never expects to see the boy again. Lord John Grey and Lady Isobel are to be married. They will raise young William together. It's a beautiful friendship they have developed. Hopefully we will see John soon. Claire is at her end. Roadblocks since Ardsmuir, Jamie seems nowhere to be found. Brianna and Roger try to be uplifting and supportive, but she calls it quits, saying it's time to go home. Brianna and Roger share a kiss. The relationship is budding, but Brianna leaves with her mother. With they become more in time? There were a few misses with social status all but forgotten and that damned snake was just weird. Anyone remember the dragonlfy in amber paperweight Claire gave to Jamie at the stones in season 2?  This episode is full of bittersweet joy and sadness. It's life affirming, yet loss is great.  Will home be what it once was for Jamie or Claire? Can they go back?
