Victims groomed and raped by gangs have told the BBC's Senior UK Correspondent Sima Kotecha that they are adamant the crime is still happening to girls across the country. This week, a Tory amendment to the government's Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which wanted a national inquiry into grooming gangs, was voted down. Krupa Padhy talked to Sima and Simon Morton, a former senior investigating officer for Thames Valley Police, about what is known about how these gangs operate.Lucy Lawless, best known for playing Xena: Warrior Princess, joined Nuala McGovern to discuss another fearless woman. In her directorial debut, Never Look Away, she explores Margaret Moth, a warzone camerawoman for CNN who covered conflicts from the liberation of Kuwait in the early 90s to the Lebanon War in the mid-2000s armed only with a camera and an attitude.A new law change has made the creation of explicit deepfakes illegal, with those found guilty facing up to two years in prison. Nuala was joined by Durham Law Professor Clare McGlynn to hear more about what this means, and Channel 4's Cathy Newman, who was a victim of deepfakes herself, gives her thoughts.Victoria Melluish is a listener who wrote to us to highlight women working in environmentally hostile environments and to encourage more women to get out in the field. Victoria is currently employed as a marine mammal specialist and expedition guide on a cruise expedition ship. She says, 'I'm 30 and I work in the Arctic and Antarctic, and I often get asked how I manage having endometriosis while driving Zodiac boats around glaciers and marine megafauna.' Nuala spoke to her about her work.2025 is a big year for former Strictly professional Oti Mabuse who is judging Dancing on Ice, then going on tour and publishing her first adult novel. She joined Krupa to talk about these projects, becoming a mother and how being on I'm A Celebrity taught her the importance of sharing feelings.Presenter: Krupa Padhy Producer: Annette Wells Editor: Rebecca Myatt
2025 is a big year for former Strictly professional Oti Mabuse who is judging Dancing on Ice starting this weekend, then going on tour and publishing her first adult novel. She joins Krupa Padhy to tell us all about these projects, becoming a mother and how being on I'm A Celebrity taught her the importance of talking about feelings. The term Eldest Daughter Syndrome is not an official mental health diagnosis, but on social media it has spurred women to talk about the way that being the eldest daughter in the family has affected them. Krupa speaks to therapist Louise Tyler and Sahra Abdulrehman, who is co-director of Home Girls Unite, a support group for eldest daughters. Playliste: Intro (Til julebal i Nisseland) Band Aid – Do they know it's Christmas (12” Mix) Duran Duran – I don't want your love (Big Mix) Wham! – Wham Rap! „A kamera fegyver a dolgok tragédiája, eltűnése ellen” – fogalmazott Wim Wenders nyugatnémet filmrendező 1987-ben. Amikor fél évszázaddal korábban a holland dokumentumfilmes Joris Ivens a szemüvegét folyton viselni kényszerülő Ernest Hemingwayjel a polgárháborús Madridban forgatott, szintén fegyverként használta a kamerát. A No pasarán! podcastban az antifasizmus első száz évének történeteiből válogatunk.Említett könyvek, tanulmányok:Benjamin, Walter 1969: A műalkotás a technikai sokszorosíthatóság korszakában. Writer and Director Ansel Faraj discovered filmmaker stardom at the age of 20 with his professional debut film Doctor Mabuse. Since then he has kept busy with genre hits such as Loon Lake which is based on the Minnesota legend of Mary Jane the Witch. Legend has it if you cross her grave three times unfortunate events will likely occur. While Ansel has found success, he warns fledgling filmmakers the industry is not all pomp and glamour.
In 1985 the German group Propaganda managed their one perfect album, A Secret Wish. Released on Trevor Horn's ZTT label (he was also the Executive Producer), this synth pop classic featured hits like "Duel" and "Dr. Mabuse" which haven't aged a day. Though it was an achievement, it created friction within the group (as well as financial and interpersonal issues), causing the frontwomen, Susanne and Claudia, to leave the band before the follow up was recorded. Other bands were created and solo careers were attempted until 2022 when the two paired up with producer Stephen Lipson as xPropaganda and released the incredible comeback album, The Heart is Strange. This week Susanne and Claudia join us to discuss the entire ride and what they're up to now. It's rare we get to hear from one of them, let alone both! www.xpropaganda.co.uk www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

I welcome writer Holger Haase to the show to discuss the 1960's Dr. Mabuse films! Holger has written an essay published for Kindle called ‘The Many Masks of Dr. Mabuse: Mabuse in the 1960s'. Reading this prompted me to finally talk directly to Holger. The two of us have known each other for decades but it took our mutual love of these German crime films to use the internet to speak in a non-text based way. It was a little weird. We go (mostly) chronologically through the six films discussing each in turn. If you want to follow along at home here's a list of the movies we talk about in this episode: 1. THE 1000 EYES OF DR. MABUSE (1960) 2. THE RETURN OF DR. MABUSE (1961) 3. THE INVISIBLE DR. MABUSE (1962) 4. THE TESTEMENT OF DR. MABUSE (1962) 5. DR. MABUSE VS SCOTLAND YARD (1963) 6. THE DEATH RAY OF DR. MABUSE (1964) We touch on the cast members with extra attention to the ones that show up in multiple films even when their character's names mysteriously change. Scriptwriter Ladislas Fodor's impressive career is discussed as well as directors Fritz Lang and Harald Reinl who brought their many talents to the series. This series of films seems to have been forgotten over the past couple of decades, overshadowed by the original Lang films from 1922 and 1933. We hope to spur some interest in cinema fans curious to discover the hidden joys of these clever crime movies. They really are addictive! If you have thoughts on the Mabuse films or the krimi cycle that they parallel thebloodypit@gmail.com is where you can send them. We'll be happy to hear from you. Thanks for listening.
I can't believe I am saying this but we are back babes with season 8 of the podcast, and to celebrate, the dress code for today's episode is *SEQUINS ONLY*, because we are joined by Strictly Come Dancing judge, Motsi Mabuse! Before Motsi became a judge on our favourite TV show, she had a 30 year professional dancing career, which saw her being crowned Latin dance champion, and if you haven't seen her dancing yet, sashay to YouTube ASAP, Motsi is mesmerising. Plus, she is also a judge on the German version of the show, where she still lives with her husband and daughter. Aside from spilling the sequins on this season of Strictly, Motsi shares her inspirational journey to the glitterball world, which wasn't a waltz, growing up in apartheid-era South Africa and leaving for Germany to follow her dreams with only 50 euros to her name. Motsi also tells me about the discrimination she has faced and continues to face and how she deals with it. I LOVE what Motsi says about never giving up on yourself, looking after the relationship with yourself and that one of her greatest learnings in life is: when things are bad they don't stay bad forever. Plus she loves the gays almost as much as I do! If you find Motsi as joyful as I do, get in touch! You can find me @joshsmithhosts across socials. It's always so great chatting to you! Love, Josh xx P.S. I am so proud to bring you these special episodes of the podcast which are focusing on our self care and wellbeing with my favourite skincare brand, Elemis. During the change of seasons so many different feelings can come to the surface so it's important you make positive self care decisions everyday to help your wellbeing. What's up my fellow observers. I am proud to release the first part of an investigation into Erik Jan Hanussen with ParaPower Mapping. You Should check out ParaPower Mapping on Spotify or Apple or wherever you get his podcast. Also make sure you check him out on twitter @KlonnyPin_Gosch !Also subscribe to his patreon: ParaPower Mapping | PatreonBelow is a description of some of what we discuss from the man himself Klonny:Synchronicities b/w Hanussen & Hitler's lives; Levenda & Lewis's contention that EJH taught Hitler mass hypnosis; his possibly embellished birth in a holding cell in Vienna; his vaudevillian upbringing; Hanussen's possible Sabbatean or Frankist lineage (via a Spence essay); the presence of said sects in the Steinschneider hometown of Prossnitz; his "Orientalist" & esotericist uncle Moritz; EJH's childhood obsession w/ Emperor Nero; his purported capture of a highwayman at 9 years old; EJH running away to join the circus as a preteen; EJH's intro to sexual blackmail as telepathic paparazzo for the Viennese tabloid Der Blitz; his manipulation of a printer's strike; his conscription into the Austro-Hungarian army; his WWI service; his time in a burial squad & his cemetery séance; mentalist routines in the trenches; Hanussen bribing a military censor to feed him letters so he could use them as proof of his clairvoyance; his abortive attempt to fake war neuroses; EJH going AWOL for 2 weeks to perform in Vienna, which led to him winning the hearts of the Austro-Hungarian royal family... leading to his transfer from the front lines to a performing unit at the family's behest; EJH's growing fame as a mentalist & psychic detective post-WWI; his manipulation of the experimental psychologist Joe Labero, who he tricked into teaching him "muscle reading" to expose a fellow magician—a technique that would become central to EJH's routine; history of muscle reading, which brings us to US neurologists & psychologists like Dr. Beard & William James; Hanussen & Freud discussing hypnosis in Vienna; the undeniable connections b/w the two men via Freud's acolyte Schilder, who observed Erik; EJH's work as a hypnotist at the Institute for Breath Therapy; Hanussen's psychic "detection" of the culprit behind the theft of 100ks of kronen bills from an Austrian mint; the possibility EJH conspired crimes only to solve them & boost his legend; his opportunistic attempts to manipulate the "Vampire of Düsseldorf" killings for media coverage; the Vampire's (aka Peter Kurten) disgusting bestiality paraphilia = the sex magickal ritual killings of animals at Crowley's Abbey of Thelema; the Vampire -> to Fritz Lang's noir oeuvre, particularly M & the Dr. Mabuse trilogy; the likelihood Dr. Mabuse was directly inspired by EJH, connecting to the TV series Babylon Berlin, which has a hypno criminal mastermind character who was definitely inspired by Dr. Mabuse & EJH; the show's allusions to EJH's sexual blackmail & the private séance that he performed for the Krupp family; and we set the stage for Hanussen's arms trading, espionage, & Nazi-filled pleasure cruises in the subsequent installment... Plus much more.Giant thanks to PPM for all the hard work who has put in to research Hanussen. Welcome back to PPM. Subscribe to the Patreon to access ASFA (Pt. V): patreon.com/ParaPowerMapping Hop on the Hindenburg & pop over to Babylon Berlin, where we will use BB character Dr. Anno Schmidt as a prism thru which we can examine a handful of historical hypno valences, the subliminal undercurrent gurgling through the National Socialistic discharge of Weimar Germany. In today's EP, we discuss: Necessary Babylon Berlin exposition; protagonists - Vice & later Homicide Detective Gereon Rath (which I accidentally keep mispronouncing in this EP) & the assistant gumshoe Charlotte; we break down Dr. Schmidt's inhumane experiments w/ the methamphetamine Pervitin on weasels, wolves, & even humans; foreshadows of the Nazi weaponization of psychoactive drugs to program their shock troops into fearless Übermensch-berserkers; Dr. Schmidt's Institute for Suggestive Therapy (hypno-suggestive title there), where he uses hypnosis to treat WWI vets, morphine addicts, & the homeless; points of reference for Dr. Schmidt's character: Erik Jan Hanussen, Dr. Max Nonne, & Dr. Mabuse from Fritz Lang films; some antecedents of the rise of Nazism—economic imperialism, residual wartime mass trauma, cultural hegemony, mass manipulation; night club Moka Efti, which actually existed; themes of automatism, transhumanism, & Social Darwinism; Gereon's fraught relationship w/ his brother Dr. Schmidt; wartime service together; S1 & S2 bookended w/ scenes of Gereon being hypnotized by Schmidt; Dr. Schmidt's name = real life Dr. Heinrich Schmidt, a wretched SS member & "First Camp Physician" at Buchenwald, Dachau, etc.; the real life Schmidt's prosecution post-WWII; accusations against him, including that he murdered 8 ppl by withholding care & the selection of gas chambers; the fact that real Dr. Schmidt may have been acquitted, in part, because of his repeated collaboration w/ the Allies immediately following the war—including acting as a witness in the Bergen-Belsen Trials & the fact that he worked as "Senior Doctor" at the Allied-run Bergen-Belsen Displaced Persons Camp immediately following Nazi surrender Alt., we consider Dr. Schmidt as allusion to Ernst Schmidt, a fellow messenger that was present on a dangerous courier mission when a Brit grenade exploded & shot shrapnel into Lance Corporal Hitler's leg; we compare this incident to the crucial moment of Gereon's abandonment of his brother Dr. Schmidt in no man's land; Schmidt brings us to Hitler's near-death in the Maximillian II barracks after the war, when he Freikorps executed 1 out of 10 soldiers stationed there for suspicions of being Red Army; Hitler spying; a Palm Sunday Putsch reference; further similarities between Dr. Anno Schmidt & Hitler, including their respective gas attacks & interest in the occult; speaking of which, Dr. Schmidt is a member of the Fraternitas Saturni; the nightmarish mustard gas lung "sloughing" effect; we explore the Black Reichswehr; we juxtapose the Black Reichswehr & Freikorps w/ the American Legion; we compare the dinner that Gereon attends at his fascist Polizei partner Bruno's house & the "stab-in-the-back" myths promulgated during it to W.D. Pelley's antisemitism; direct connections b/w Black Reichswehr & Nazis; the Küstrin Putsch & attempt to overthrow Gustav Stresemann's administration; Gereon's partner Bruno's name probably being a reference to Black Reichswehr commando Bruno Buchrucker; a possible connection b/w paramilitaries & hypnotherapy in the show... via the Black Reichswehr's primary funder, the German industrialist fail-son Alfred Nyssen (who is definitely a composite of Thyssen & Krupp); Nyssen is a manic depressive & his doktor is—you guessed it—Anno Schmidt. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Austrian-born film director Fritz Lang (1890-1976), who was one of the most celebrated film-makers of the 20th century. He worked first in Weimar Germany, creating a range of films including the startling and subversive Mabuse the Gambler and the iconic but ruinously expensive Metropolis before arguably his masterpiece, M, with both the police and the underworld hunting for a child killer in Berlin, his first film with sound. The rise of the Nazis prompted Lang's move to Hollywood where he developed some of his Weimar themes in memorable and disturbing films such as Fury and The Big Heat. With Stella Bruzzi Professor of Film and Dean of Arts and Humanities at University College London Joe McElhaney Professor of Film Studies at Hunter College, City University of New York And Iris Luppa Senior Lecturer in Film Studies in the Division of Film and Media at London South Bank University Producer: Simon Tillotson
