The Tech Blog Writer Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 15, 2024 23:30

In an age dominated by surveillance and data collection, is it truly possible to achieve digital anonymity? On today's episode, recorded live from Web Summit in Lisbon, I'm joined by two trailblazers who are challenging conventional wisdom around online privacy: Chelsea Manning, well-known whistleblower and privacy advocate, and Harry Halpin, CEO of Nym Technologies. Together, they reveal why traditional tools like VPNs and encrypted messaging apps might not be enough to protect us in a world where advanced AI can mine metadata to uncover our most private activities. We explore the current state of digital privacy, dissecting the limitations of existing tools and introducing NymVPN, the world's first decentralized VPN powered by a noise-generating mixnet.  With AI's ability to sift through patterns in data, simple encryption isn't sufficient anymore. Manning and Halpin delve into the concept of metadata—the often-overlooked data about data—highlighting its importance in AI-driven surveillance and why it poses a significant threat to our privacy. In this engaging conversation, we break down how NymVPN's mixnet technology offers a unique approach by obscuring online behavior with noise and mixing up data streams. We also address practical questions: Can this technology be easily adopted by everyday users? How does it stack up against popular tools like Tor? And what role does it play in regions plagued by censorship and heavy surveillance? Whether you're a journalist, an activist, or simply concerned about your digital privacy, this episode offers a thought-provoking look at the future of online anonymity. Are we truly entering a new frontier in digital freedom, or is privacy becoming an illusion? Tune in to find out—and decide for yourself if it's time to rethink the tools you use to stay safe online. After listening, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Have your views on digital privacy changed after this discussion? Let me know. Until next time, stay informed and vigilant—because privacy is more than a right; it's a necessity in today's interconnected world.

“Jimmy is a great coach, loved him when he travelled to international training camps with Ireland, great pad man.” When you're getting praise like this from the notoriously hard-to-please Paddy Barnes, then you must be doing something right. And today's guest Jimmy Halpin has been doing something right for 40 years now. Before that, the young Dubliner had talent as a boxer but didn't quite manage to match that with a bulging collection of medals, with his last fight coming in 1981 when, three years out of the ring by then, he ‘got a hiding' when he returned for one night only on a benefit for the Stardust victims. However the lessons he learned still stand to him to this day. Jimmy is loved by his boxers and adored by other coaches, but he takes no bull either and his forthright honesty (or constructive criticism) sometimes leads to disagreements along the way. He trained Ireland's first female fighter (and first female world champion) Deirdre Gogarty when she first walked through the doors at St Saviours in Dublin, and taught double Olympic champion Kellie Harrington many of the moves that led to her topping podiums in Tokyo and Paris. Jimmy worked his magic with Cathal O'Grady, Darren Sutherland and Emmet Brennan - Olympians all - at club level and worked alongside Billy Walsh with the Irish high performance team for over a decade. Now, at 72, he's still giving back as a volunteer, touring clubs all over Dublin, mainly, and giving pointers to coaches and boxers alike. As he says, his mission was to create universal boxers before there was even a term for it. His passion for boxing is infectious and as Jimmy says, once you're in the club - whether you're a novice or a potential world champion - you're deserving of his time, and he'll strive to help you improve. As for the best fighter he worked with during his time in Ireland? I'll give you a clue - it's someone who's got the full set of medals, anyway. Hosted on Acast. Hailing from Carlow, Ireland, David Halpin is a writer with a deep knowledge of Ireland's fairy lore and  pagan heritage. On his facebook blog, Circle Stories, he explores these themes in great depth.  David is also the creative force behind Occult Book Review on Twitter and YouTube. What I really love about David's work is he is an active participant in preserving the lore and mythology of Ireland. He goes out and sees the stones and raths and teases their stories from them. Which provides us with a vital link to our past.In the show David talks how fairy spirits of alleged different forms can manifest in the same ways. He gives his thoughts on the parallels with UFOs and we get into the differences and similarities between cities and rural places with fairies and go down a bit of a rabbit hole after the Pooka.  In the plus show we get into the dangers of summoning the Good People and David regals us with a story of brushing up against the strange while on a trip to a remote stone circle. We also discuss fairy ointments and from there discuss the use of psychedelics in Irish mythology and folk practice and go off on interesting tangents on the Djinn, Our Lady of Fátima and consciousness. In this episode of the Skeptical Shaman Podcast, host Rachel White (of TOTEM Readings) chats with Elisha Halpin, a nervous system-training coach that works with individuals wanting to get out of adrenal fatigue, effectively retraining their brains to not freak the f*ck out all the damn time.Elisha calls herself an ‘awakened academic', having extracted herself from the grind of higher education to work with clients to heal trauma through meditation, somatic therapy, and much, much more. She works with clients to achieve better nervous system regulation—no small feat in our nervous system-destroying world. In this discussion, we explore the hyperstimulation of the simulacra in which we live: a world obsessed with the “viral”, the hyper-novel, and the increasingly depraved and intense as we hunt for the illusive brain chemicals that generate the happy feels. Long story short: there are no cheat codes are hacks to mental health or spiritual development, so stop treating this stuff like a vending machine. There is no short cut. The bottom line? Chasing the dragon of dopamine while fighting off the monster of cortisol is no way to go through life. Sometimes, we all just need to get back to the somatic and cerebral version of the missionary position. With socks on. And lights off.I realize this is a daring and risqué metaphor, but it's also apt.  I mean, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!Join Elisha and I in our crusade to empower others to chop wood and carry water: i.e. embrace the meditation of the mundane and the recalibration to normal that our nervous systems are dying to experience again.
