Being tall is absolutely amazing, but it can also be annoying at times…No one can deny that fact lol. One of the most annoying things is the clothing situation and not being able to find pants that reach our ankles, long sleeves that reach our wrists, shoes that are big enough, etc. Honestly, that's probably the #1 problem tall people experience, especially women. People and their stares, comments, jokes, and backhanded compliments: those things can also get annoying or even make us insecure. Spaces like bathrooms, cars, airplanes, and kitchens aren't the most tall-friendly, making some of the most basic life tasks very uncomfortable or hard to do. These are just a few of the struggles. Recently, more and more tall women have been speaking up on social media about the things they love about being tall, especially with trends like the Big Mama trend. However, there's been a bit of a shift. There's a new trend where the tall girlies are now expressing their insecurities and frustrations surrounding their height. This kinda makes you wonder: is the tall girl confidence real, or is it just a trend that's dying out? Well, we're answering this question in today's episode, so be sure to tune in! Pearls The current iteration of heart allocation listing is based on priority, with status 1 being the highest priority. The are multiple donor and recipient characteristics to consider when listing a patient for heart transplantation and accepting a heart offer. Desensitization is an option for patients who need heart transplantation but are highly sensitized. Protocols vary by center. Acceptance of DCD hearts is one of many efforts to expand the donor pool Notes Notes: Notes drafted by Dr. Rachel Goodman Once a patient is determined to be a candidate for heart transplantation, how is priority determined? The current iteration of heart listing statuses was implemented in 2018. Priority is determined by acuity, with higher statuses indicating higher acuity and given higher priority. Status 1 is the highest priority status, and Status 7 is inactive patients. (1,2) What criteria should be considered in organ selection when listing a patient for heart transplant? Once it is determined that a patient will be listed for heart transplantation, there are certain criteria that should be assessed. These factors may impact pre-transplant care and/or donor matching (3). (1) PVR (2) Height/weight (3) Milage listing criteria (4) Blood typing/cPRA/HLA typing What is desensitization and why would it be considered? Desensitization is an attempt to reduce or remove anti-HLA antibodies in the recipient. It is done to increase the donor pool. In general, desensitization is reserved for patients who are highly sensitized. Desensitization protocols vary by transplant center, and some may opt against it. When considering desensitization, it is important to note two key things: first, there is no promise that it will work, and second desensitization involves the use of immunosuppressive agents, thereby putting patients at increased risk of infection and cytopenia. (4) Can you explain DCD and DBD transplant? DBD: donor that have met the requirements for legal definition of brain death. DCD: donors that have not met the legal definition of brain death but have been determined to have circulatory death. Because the brain death criteria have not been met, organ recovery can only take place once death is confirmed based on cessation of circulatory and respiratory function. Life support is only withdrawn following declaration of circulatory death—once the heart has stopped beating and spontaneous respirations have stopped. Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 8:27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! 8:28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. 8:29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? 8:30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. 8:31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. 8:32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters. 8:33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils. 8:34 And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.

A viral clip of an EV igniting was what started my worries about safety in car parks I have been designing. Are we ready for fast growing fires? Since 2019 I've learned and studied a lot, I've relaxed on some aspects of it and was able to identify they areas where a lot more engineering considerations should be placed. In this episode I would like to take you inside the engineering choices that shape outcomes: ceiling height, smoke control, structural details, and how fast systems wake up when seconds matter. Instead of arguing EV versus ICE, we look at what the data shows across 148 vehicle fire tests and why there's no single “true” car fire curve.Think of a car as a set of compartments—the cabin, engine bay, trunk, wheels, and for EVs the battery pack—each with its own vents and barriers. That lens explains the wildly different heat release profiles you see in experiments and helps you separate worst-case lab setups from realistic design scenarios. We unpack why rapid battery-led growth is so challenging for low garages, how beams can trap and extend flames under the ceiling, and how wind can either help by stripping hot gases or hurt by pushing fire across bays. From there, we focus on consequences and controls. For evacuation, the goal is to avoid early smoke cut-offs and protect crowded egress moments after events. For firefighting, the single most important factor is a clear entry path—no smoke between the crew and the fire—so water can be applied fast to stop spread, even if battery cooling remains lengthy. For structure, isolated car fires shouldn't be catastrophic in robust frames, but long, multi-vehicle burns can threaten integrity without early control. What works? Height buys time and reduces ceiling flame attachment. Smart smoke control drains energy from the layer and lowers radiation to neighboring cars. Thoughtful layouts keep chargers away from exits and closer to exhaust paths. And suppression systems may not “kill” a battery, but they cut plume temperatures, slash spread potential, and make the entire operation safer. We also surface key gaps: natural battery-initiated growth rates, context-specific risk acceptance, and handling potential explosive gas releases with low-level detection and dilution modes. If you like to learn more, see more here:Miechówka & Węgrzyński: Systematic Literature Review on Passenger Car Fire Experiments for Car Park Safety DesignZahir & César Martín-Gómez: Evaluating Fire Severity in Electric Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles: A Statistical Approach to Heat Release RatesCollection of Fire Science Show episodes on cars and batteriesEpisode 6 - my early research on fast fire growthEpisode 190 - Review of research on vehicle firesPodcast episode 135 - Contemplating a car park design fire----The Fire Science Show is produced by the Fire Science Media in collaboration with OFR Consultants. This Episodes Questions: Brians Questions: Love the podcast fellas! I have a simple question: When I use my table saw, I usually just check if the blade is "high enough" i.e. any height higher than the wood piece. Is there an ideal blade height for a given wood thickness? Thanks! Matt What is the most difficult project you've ever done? Brian Guys Questions: I'm wondering how thick is too thick to veneer onto a plywood box. I'll be making a treasure chest for my daughter's wedding (for cards and such) and lining it in leather. I have some wood I'd like to use for the outside as “veneer”, but it is a 3/8” thick. The species is morado, and they were a “special buy” thing at a Woodcraft I got a while ago. Basically, I have them and I'd like to use them if possible rather than buying something else. My bandsaw isn't always the most reliable, so while I would feel comfortable splitting them and then planing them flat again, that might be as thin as I'm able to do. I'm guessing 1/8” thick once all the processing is done. Is that too thick to use as veneer? Is there a glue that's better for a thicker veneer than a thin one? Thanks, Peter I recently bought a small bandsaw mill (Woodmizer LX30) and am becoming an amateur sawyer, exclusively to supply lumber for my own projects. 2 questions, here's the first: 1. In what use cases, if any, would you use air-dried lumber for your projects, assuming it is stickered properly, outside, with a rain cover on the top, for a year per inch of thickness? I was told by a friend who operates a kiln that air-drying in southern Indiana will never get the moisture content much below 13-15%, it will dry unevenly throughout the board, and it won't kill powder post beetles and other insects. His conclusion is that for any indoor woodwork projects, I should only use kiln-dried lumber. Do you agree? Why or why not? Fortunately, he's well-respected, trustworthy, and at $.35/bd-ft dried, affordable. But I can air-dry for free, so I'd be curious to know when, if ever, that may be workable. Kyle Huy's Questions: I have another good fundamentals of woodworking type question for you. Could you explain the differences between grain density and porosity? For a while I thought I knew what at least one of these meant. That was until I heard Guy describe oak as a tight-grained, open pore species. That whole description goes more or less right over my head. I'd really appreciate it if you guys could explain what grain density and wood porosity look like visually, as well as what effects these attributes have on working with a particular species, finishing it, etc. Thanks for all of your time and for sharing your expertise with all of us. The Fridays when you guys have new episodes are my favorite days of the week. Zach Hello Friends, I have a woodshop at my house in the PNW. I'm somewhere between a beginner and not a beginner. If you want to answer this question on your fantastic podcast, you can of course skip the preamble. I offer it here so you can understand the context and environment in which my question lives. Because we are friends, I care what you think, so I hope you don't arrive at the conclusion that I'm impractical. I've tried to create a shop environment that incorporates a whimsical and creative aesthetic because that is how I aspire to be in this space. I built an entry door and carriage doors for my 500sq foot detached woodshop. Doors guts are constructed from poplar frames, 1.5” ridged insulation in the voids, MDO skin on the exterior side trimmed in the craftsman style with ¾ cedar. The interior side of the doors are skinned in plywood and laminated with orange counter top material. The orange is the same color as those orange shirts people who work hard wear. I like to wear these shirts to give my wife the impression that I too am working and not just fudging around. I wanted my workshop to feel likewise. Door window sills and trim are walnut. On the entry door, I've installed a commercial style stainless steel handset modified for a 3” thick door. Carriage doors are hung with 4 heavy duty sealed ball bearing hinges per side. For the carriage doors, I had custom astragals and a threshold plate fabricated at a local metalworking shop, and used stainless steel cane bolts that plunge through the threshold plate to hold the doors tight against the weather seals and another set of cane bolts at the top to complete the seal. The carriage door handles are two of my favorite axes. I designed mounting hardware, built by the fabricator, with a quick release pin system so I can pull them off when I need them for axe related business. Inside the shop, I've installed antique reclaimed maple flooring on the walls. The flooring was recovered from a factory that used to make steam powered tractors for hauling giant old growth redwood trees out of the forests on the west coast in the late 1800's. It seemed like a fitting retirement for these floors. I didn't resurface the flooring (which is now walling) so it retains all of its history, factory floor markings, old holes for mounting machinery etc. Now that the doors are in, I need to install interior trim around the frames that is worthy of the walls and doors. I went to Goby (https://gobywalnut.com) to procure materials. They specialize in Oregon hardwoods such as Oregon Black Walnut, Big Leaf Maple, Oregon White Oak, Madrone, and Myrtle. I came home with some burled live edge Big Leaf stock. My idea is to trim the door frames in maple, with the inside edge (nearest the door) all squared and straight, and the outside edges of the left, right and top trim pieces being irregular and strange. Preparing and finishing these trim pieces is the nature of my questions: I have a ten-foot long 12/4 burled and figured maple board with a live edge on one side. The board ranges from 9” to 18” wide. My plan is to resaw it into a two 1.5” ish boards and dimension them down to about 1 ¼ to make the parts for my project. Before I do that, I need to clean up the burled protrusions on the live edge side because I think it will be easier to do that before I resaw it. My first question is how do I clean up the live edge burls? Some of the live edge is typical, but other sections have a lot of terrifying spiked peaks and valleys where a burl has boiled out of the tree. It looks like the surface of the sun right before it's getting ready to disrupt our global communications system for a few hours. If it helps to understand what I'm dealing with, my wife saw the board when I brought it home said things like “your wood is being a drama queen” and “it's trying to do too much” and “how much was that”. To experiment, I took a wire brush to a small section just to see what would happen. It worked well from the standpoint of clearing out debris, removing bark and burrs. But I suspect this isn't the best method for ultimately prepping this for finishing and is probably a crime. Once I get the edge cleaned up, I'll resaw and dimension my parts. Getting this 10 foot 12/4 stock up onto my bandsaw and perfectly slicing it into two equal pieces will probably go great. Then I'll sand the faces to 220. That's where my extensive experience runs out. Rather than give up at this point, what can I do to bring out the wild figuring on these boards? Fesstool made me buy higher grits of sandpaper like 400, 800, 1000 etc that I haven't used. Is this why I have these grits? Unlike everything else in my life, I don't want to overthink this, but I'm starting to wonder how much that twisted, gnarled bubbling burled edge is going to drip finish on the rest of the board after I spray it. Should I consider frog taping the faces, spraying the live edge first and then shoot the face as a second operation after the edges are done? Can one of you come over? I've never used shellac before, but I've listened to every one of your episodes so I feel like I'm probably an expert in shellac and pound cut related activities. I have a 5 stage Fujispray system that I've used in the past to drip finishes on the floor and all over myself and my work pieces. I also have some rags. Robert
If you're a tall girly reading this right now, I want you to tell me if this has ever happened to you. You're at a bar, or if you're under 21 in the U.S., you're somewhere other than the bar, and a random stranger comes up to you and asks you how tall you are. Nothing new, of course; it happens from time to time. You're feeling good vibes today, so you answer the question. Just as an example, you say that you're 6'2” because you are. And then the stranger says, “You can't be 6'2” because I'm 6'2” and I'm looking up at you.” And no, you're not wearing heels, by the way. Or you are and proceed to take them off to show your actual height (spoiler: you're still taller).Either way, you're like no, I AM 6'2”, but whatever. Then, the stranger quite literally starts arguing with you about how you're wrong and you're the one lying and bla bla bla. And you're just like chill, we literally don't even know each other; it's not that deep babes. There are many tall women who have experienced something like this, and I'm sure they all question why it's THAT serious. Well, we're hopefully gonna get to the bottom of this in today's episode, so make sure you tune in! With Xbox's famous ringworld officially arriving on PlayStation 5 in 2026, we can rest assured that Sony's longtime rival has finally conceded the console space for good. Halo: Campaign Evolved -- clever! -- is a ground-up remake of the smash-hit 2001 Xbox launch title, and it comes with some new bells and whistles, including fresh content and a four-player online-enabled campaign. Microsoft even trotted Halo's community manager out in a PlayStation shirt, promised all upcoming Halo content is Sony-bound, and yielded perhaps their last meaningful franchise to the competition. This gives us much to discuss! Plus: Helldivers 2 dev Arrowhead begins work on its next project, Horizon's live-action movie is slated to film next year and launch in '27, Resident Evil 0 Remake rumors are percolating, we may be waiting a while longer for Starfield's PS5 debut, Electronic Arts scores a renewed deal with the NFL to continue the Madden franchise, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Why does anyone care about Photo Mode? What's our dream PowerWash Simulator 2 DLC? Is it okay to play a game without delving into its greater meaning and themes? Get started with 1 month free of Superhuman today, using my link: https://try.sprh.mn/briankeating Today's guest made bacteria immune to every virus that exists. This breakthrough could revolutionize medicine by creating virus proof cell therapies and potentially extending this protection to human cells. Also demonstrating that we can fundamentally rewrite the language of life itself, something that was previously thought impossible. George Church is a Harvard Medical School genetics professor and pioneer of synthetic biology. He's an entrepreneur who's found in multiple biotech companies and is known for pushing the boundaries between science fiction and reality. His team just did something that sounds like pure science fiction. They made living cells completely immune to every virus on Earth. That resistant immune, every single virus that tries to infect your cells just fails. The viruses can't evolve around it. Here's the wild part. They didn't add anything new. They just removed a few letter from the genetic alphabet. But George isn't stopping there. He wants to do this to human cells. He's talking about engineering astronauts for Mars missions, bringing back wooly mammoths, and maybe even, just maybe, making humans virus proof to the implications are staggering. The ethics are murky. And the timeline. Well, if church's track record tells us anything is happening far faster than we think. KEY TAKEAWAYS 00:00:00 – Church's team made cells virus-proof, a major medical breakthrough 00:02:34 – Radiation resistance may come from DNA repair linked to desiccation 00:04:43 – A few genes can boost bacteria's radiation resistance 00:07:16 – Panspermia is unlikely due to harsh space conditions 00:10:50 – Space travel may need biological, not just physical, changes 00:14:19 – Regenesis explores synthetic biology's potential 00:18:19 – Height involves many genes, but single ones can have big effects 00:20:57 – Once sci-fi, genome sequencing and pig organs are now real 00:23:20 – Church and Venter are more collaborators than rivals 00:27:17 – Rewriting genes can create virus-proof organisms 00:35:36 – DNA can store data, but reading/writing is slow 00:41:06 – Gattaca and Jurassic Park portray genetics well with small flaws 00:44:03 – Gene therapies can be affordable for all 00:46:44 – Stem cells can create any body cell for therapy 00:49:15 – “Mirror humans” are possible but avoided ethically 00:53:59 – Genomic privacy isn't an issue since we shed DNA constantly 00:56:09 – Gene editing helps endangered species adapt, not revive extinct ones 01:00:30 – Virus-proof humans are possible, but tough to deliver to all cells 01:02:59 – Gene therapies could reverse aging at the cellular level 01:04:18 – Church avoids saying “impossible,” but admits to timeline optimism - Get My NEW Book: Focus Like a Nobel Prize Winner: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FN8DH6SX?ref_=pe_93986420_775043100 Please join my mailing list here

Dr. Pontzer investigates the physiology of humans and other primates to understand how ecology, lifestyle, diet, and evolutionary history affect metabolism and health. His latest book is Adaptable: How Your Unique Body Really Works and Why Our Biology Unites Us. In this episode, we focus on Adaptable. We start by talking about how we should understand biological variation in humans, and whether “race” is a scientific concept. We discuss when life starts in intrauterine development, and what a “person” is. We talk about variation in height and in nose shape, how to understand population differences and local adaptations, and the role of the environment. We discuss heritability, IQ and intelligence. We talk about what we have evolved to eat and digest. We discuss variation in sexual development, gender, and trans people. We talk about how vaccines work and why they are important. Not many survival stories can rival the miracle that happened to Marine Lt. Col. William Henry Rankin in 1959. See for yourself: one bad day, this man nearly drowned -- falling from the sky! Um, are you saying that it sounds too paradoxical to be true? So, it was a high-altitude flight, and Rankin, together with his wingman were flying at the height of more than 47,000 ft. The only thing that could cause some trouble was a storm that was raging far beneath the planes, but now, it didn't present any threat. However, the pilots were supposed to pass through this storm on their way to the Marine air base in Beaufort, South Carolina... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Adam's Paternity Leave is near its end, but while we still have a few weeks left of it, let's look at the first of a pair of episodes (we'll pick up the second installment next week) featuring a key Emmy presenter from last night. A few resourceful new Munchies have figured out a work-around where you can join as a free member and upgrade from there to a paid account which charges you for one month and unlocks the back catalog behind the respective tier of the paywall. After that first payment, you won't be charged again until we're dropping new content (which we'll warn everyone is coming), so if you want more of this it can be had, along with access to the fully uncut episodes from 100 to present and Movie Club episodes.Hot on the heels of an episode that nearly broke our rating scale, the Munchie Boys watched Part 1 of a two-parter featuring Ray Romano's kooky brother Robert from the hit turn-of-the-century sitcom for olds, Everybody Loves Raymond. Fans of that show will remember that the actor in question, Brad Garrett, is really, REALLY tall. This causes the kind of continuity problems that only SVU can create. We're obviously talking about complex genital geometry problems. We would, of course, be remiss if our discussion stayed on topic, so expect to hear about Chinese New Year, more car talk from Josh, Rikers Island, and Predator.Sources:A Look Inside Rikers - NY TimesMusic:Divorcio Suave - “Munchy Business”Thanks to our gracious Munchies on Patreon: Jeremy S, Jaclyn O, Amy Z, Diana R, Tony B, Barry W, Drew D, Nicky R, Stuart, Jacqi B, Natalie T, Robyn S, Amy A, Sean M, Jay S, Briley O, Asteria K, Suzanne B, Tim Y, John P, John W, Elia S, Rebecca B, Lily, Sarah L, Melsa A, Alyssa C, Johnathon M, Tiffany C, Brian B, Kate K, Whitney C, Alex, Jannicke HS, Roni C, Erin M, Florina C, Melissa H, and Olivia - y'all are the best!Be a Munchie, too! Tommy Fleetwood has finally won a PGA Tour event. Naturally, this episode starts elsewhere, as Andy and Brendan immediately jump into some quotes from Robert Garrigus and James Hahn. As told to Adam Schupak, these men are very unhappy about the PGA Tour's continued shift toward Signature Events. Garrigus challenged Jordan Spieth to a match for his "five sponsor exemptions" into Signature Events next year and Hahn wants Brian Rolapp to get his phone number from Jay Monahan. This sets Andy off, wondering which players should feature in the "Mule Derby." Things eventually get back to the Super Bowl of Golf, won by Tommy Fleetwood after four rounds of preferred lies. Tommy held off "Playoff P," Keegan Bradley, Russell Henley, and a half-hearted charge from FedEx Cup fourth-place-finisher Scottie Scheffler on Sunday. PJ questions whether this Tour Championship should even count as Tommy's first win, but Fleetwood is now Mr. 1,001 regardless. Andy and Brendan discuss the week at East Lake and give Tommy his flowers for landing the plane on Sunday afternoon. With the U.S. Ryder Cup team set to be announced on Wednesday, it seems like Keegan Bradley will select himself, leaving one of Ben Griffin, Cameron Young, or Sam Burns at home. There's a lengthy discussion about what Keegan should do, but everyone agrees things are trending toward him being a playing captain. The European Ryder Cup team also got a boost on Sunday, with Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton teaming up to win the LIV Team Championship in a playoff. Elsewhere for Europe, Rasmus Hojgaard qualified on points, all but locking up their 12 players. Brendan is unsure of how Rasmus accumulated enough points to make the top six and questions whether all points lists should go away for the 2027 Ryder Cup. Stew Cink went back-to-back at the Ally Challenge, beating Ernie Els in a playoff in Michigan and Brooke Henderson won her national Open on the LPGA. Finally, President Trump declared that he's in favor of Keegan Bradley's playing captaincy and said he will be attending the Ryder Cup on Friday. Will he chop it up with Don Rea? That remains to be seen.
